Welcome back metal heads to another album review here on The Great Metal Debate podcast. Today we will be talking about a German black metal band called Eisregen with their ... Holy dog shit! This is the band's 16th full-length studio album? What the fuck? How come I'm just now finding out about these guys. Ohhhh, that's why. Its because its their first album to be released through Napalm Records. Gotcha. But damn, these guys have been busier than a one armed machinist. According to Metal-Archives, they have consistently released new music roughly once or per year or once every two years since 1995. In 1998 they released both their debut AND their second album. I have heard from Gomthog that these guys are controversial in their home country. I'm not sure what for but their band bio says that they have been banned in their own country and aren't allowed to play certain songs live. People under the age of 16 aren't allowed to buy their physical media from entertainment stores. For now, lets focus on their newest full-length titled Abart. Not to do a completely half-assed job on this review but I've decided that I'm not going to try to pronounce any of the song titles or names of the band members. Sure, it might be lazy but I received the press release for this album a full week in advance and here we are a few days past the release date of August 16th, so I kinda need to hurry the fuck up. My cause for the delay? I was busy with another review. A review that will never see the light of day. I was gonna do one for the new Mushroomhead album before I realized that it was just me rambling on about my personal nostalgia for the old material only to give Call The Devil a 5/10. There, you got two reviews in one! Looks like y'all got more than you bargained for. Back to Eisregen, the only reason I got the promo from something on Napalm Records is because the distribution for the American copies were being released through Massacre Records. Lucky me. I have another extremely hot take so you might want to get your oven mitts on. Many people would call me a poser for being a Rammstein fanboy but ... I love the industrial metal phase that the black metal band Samael went through during the mid-2000s. I think it's Samael's best work. I know, I know, gather your torches and pitchforks to run me out of the metal community. I don't give a shit. What does that have to do with Eisregen? Eisregen sounds like Samael's 2004 masterpiece Reign of Light album raw dogged it with Rammstein's 2003 masterpiece Sehnsucht. Eisregen has that harsh flavor of German dialect. The band's native language spoils the listener with the continuous rolling tongue accent. Okay, I lied. I'll pronounce this one for you. The opening track "Am Abgrund" had a music video that was dropped a few weeks ago and its how I discovered this band in the first place. I thoroughly enjoyed the combination of the sandpaper voice over the calming piano keys. The entire album mixes the traditional black metal style with softer moments. The fusion of polar opposites give off the perfect blend of a musical Yen and Yang. That's what the overall structure provides, a balance that is easy listening. At least in my personal opinion, I find this 1 hour and 2 minute composition to be flawless. I have zero critiques which means only one thing. Eisregen - Abart is the only album I have reviewed all year that I award a 10/10 rating. It's fucking fantastic! What this band lacks in melodic guitar riffs, it more than compensates with plenty of symphonies. Eisregen's music is not on bandcamp and I have no clue where to obtain physical merch but their music is on all other streaming platforms. The album has the foundation of 80's Savage Grace with a modern musicianship to it. They also discuss the old days and how Pipeman became a casualty of the LA Metal Scene.On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Chris from Savage Grace. After many years, they have reconnected, and Pipeman is excited to hear about Savage Grace's new album, which he thinks is the best they have ever produced. Chris is glad Pipeman appreciates their new music, as they have put a lot of effort into creating it. Chris mentions that despite people saying that Savage Grace's next record will not be as good as their previous albums, the band's music just keeps getting better, and this new album is no exception. Pipeman commends the incredible vocals in their music, which he says give him chills. Chris explains that the goal of the new album is to recreate the feeling of 1978 when bands played arena shows all over the US, such as REO Speedwagon, Ted Nugent, and Molly Hatchet. Chris wanted to create that ambiance and feeling in the new album. He also wanted to incorporate threads of the old Savage Grace music in the instrumentals, such as Saxon, Motorhead, and Priest, to bring people back to the late seventies and early eighties. Chris mentions that they have updated the themes lyrically to be more relevant to today's society, as the world has changed since their previous albums. Pipeman agrees that the new album is a modernized version of Savage Grace's old music, with many relevant themes for 2023. He notes that while many bands nowadays still rely on their old music, Savage Grace has managed to modernize their sound while still retaining their originality. Chris agrees that they have updated their music without losing their musical identity. Happy Thanksgiving Metal heads! Here is a pre Gobble day listen for your steamy little ears. The return of SWORD! Formed in 1980 in Montreal, SWORD released their debut album Metalized in 1986 which was described as; Aggressive, Melodic, Loud and Rude.  They were hand-picked by Metallica to open the Quebec leg of the Master of puppets tour, Alice Cooper's Canadian Return of the nightmare tour and then crisscrossed the UK with the Mighty Lemmy on Motorhead's Rock'n'Roll tour.   It was followed by the Heavy but diverse Sweet Dreams in 1988. After a short US tour promoting the album, they started work on their 3rd album. All hell broke loose and a parting of ways ensued… Until 2011, when they reunited for a few select shows in Canada and Germany and found the urge to go back in the studio to finish where they had left off.  Fall off 2022 finds the  Legendary Canadian metal band releasing their long-awaited third album, appropriately titled III, on November 25th, 2022 via Massacre Records. It will be the band's first studio album in 34 years. I catch up with vocalist Rick Hughes and guitarist Mike Plant to get the back story of the 30 plus year gap between albums, How the new CD came about and my take on the new songs. We take a walk down heavy metal memory lane, discuss how they were ended up supporting Metallica in 1986 as well as other cool metal confessions. The Great Metal Debate podcast is back with the debut self-titled album from Catalyst Crime. Catalyst Crime describe themselves as cinematic symphonic metal; however, I'm not a huge fan of the ‘cinematic' descriptor, as I'm not clear on what that word is trying to communicate. Maybe epic metal, orchestral metal, even soundscape metal, but the term cinematic is literally about the visual scope, so it's a head scratcher for me. I digress. Catalyst Crime has assembled an impressive group of musicians for the recording of this album composed of vocalist Zoe Marie Federoff formerly of Insatia, Jonah Weingarten from Pyramaze on keys, drummer Gerit Lamm of Xandria, guitarists Christopher Zoupa and Kaelen Sarakinis, as well as bassist Matt Federoff. The project is produced by Alex Krull of Leaves' Eyes and the underrated death metal band Atrocity. The album begins with a lengthy instrumental/orchestral intro track, and which segues into the first proper song “Projection Of My Mind.” Sandwhiched between a soft intro and outro the band delivers plenty of snappy power metal vibe on this one. Plenty of color and tempo here giving the listener a real feel for what is to come. The second track, and first single off the album, is “Condemn Me To Chaos”. While I would nit-pick with some elements of this song, the melody line is so incredibly strong as to overwhelm any shortcomings that might be present. Very memorable and ear-wormy, but not in a lame, pop-sensibility way. You‘ll definitely find yourself singing along to this one! Catalyst Crime's brand of symphonic metal is very heavy on keyboards, much more so than the background orchestration, and includes even some key lead breaks of which I am a huge fan. More of this metal bands, please! I'm also a fan of Zoe Marie Federoff's vocals, which I was familiar with from her previous band Insatia. She has her own unique sound that admittedly may take some listeners a while to acclimate to. There‘s a touch of dissonant pitch to her voice that is different but strangely compelling. In addition to an array of clean classical and rock singing styles she employs, Zoe forrays into harsh vocals on a number of songs, at times evincing almost a black metal shriek. Moving in no real order through the rest of the tracklist, “Congitive Dissonance“ has a spooky, Tim-Burtonesque feel (and okay - I realize here maybe there is something to the cinematic metal tag) as well as a beautiful trade-off between the complementary male and female vocals. Toward the album end “Not Even Once“ is definitely a winning track with moderate pacing and a bit different sound a vocal delivery. I could see this one being even better live than on record. There‘s plenty of good tracks and I‘m definitely not going to do them all justice here. “Break Even” is a solid, uptempo song featuring an epic chorus and really cool guitar riffs. As or more aggressive is “Without Anesthesia” - perhaps my favorite track on the entire album. The chorus presents a cacophony of sounds; it's kinda sonically cluttered and maybe not even that well-composed, but perhaps the imperfection makes it beautiful to me. I loved it. There's just one real ballad in the mix - “Chasing the Ghost” - which I found enthralling with a beautiful interplay between the guitar and piano. The song “Twice Upon A Time” is also somewhat ballad-ish, having a slower tempo but also really well developed building of sound and contrast between the instruments. The debut self-titled album from Catalyst Crime is available from October 22 from Massacre Records in CD Digipak as well as digital formats.

Cody and Nick Souza, sons of Steve "Zetro" Souza of "Exodus". After "Zetro" left "Hatriot" due to commitments with "Exodus", his son Cody took over vocals and bass while Nick got behind the drums. This week Wayne has a talk with Sven D'Anna from the German heavy metal band Wizard. WIZARD present their new studio album "Metal In My Head", the first one with the band's new guitarist Tommy Hartung (No Inner Limits)! The band went back to their roots in terms of the songwriting and deliver pure fucking heavy metal galore.WIZARD teamed up with their old friend and producer Martin Buchwalter (Tankard, Destruction, etc.), who also mixed and mastered the album. When it came to the drum recordings, you will hear the real stuff, no software was used to artificially spice up the drum sound.The album was written and recorded during the ongoing pandemic with "lots of support from Jack Daniel's Old No. 7". Due to the band not being able to perform live, WIZARD put all their energy into the new album, and you can clearly hear that! All songs were written and arranged by WIZARD, except "Whirlewolf", which was written by Gustavo Acosta (FEANOR) and arranged by WIZARD. Gustavo also plays the piano on this song. Furthermore, Gustavo Acosta wrote and arranged the intro of "I Bring Light Into The Dark". The songs "We Fight" and "Years Of War" were created in collaboration with Marcel Schaffeld, who also came up with the idea for the album's cover artwork. En esa maqueta tocaban el tema "Tears of the trees" que enviaron a todas las discográficas. Después de que EMI no firmara con Axxis debido a esta canción, enviaron la maqueta otra vez, fue aceptada, empezaron a delirar en la oficina central de EMI y...la historia de Axxis comenzó... En febrero de 1989 llegaba a las tiendas de todo el mundo "Kingdom of the Night", primer álbum de Axxis, que tras su salida vendió más de 100.000 copias, convirtiéndose así en el disco de debut de una banda de hard rock alemana más vendido de la historia (lo que les reportaría un Multimedia Award). Unos meses más tarde, en septiembre, Axxis estaba de gira por Europa con Black Sabbath. Casi sin tiempo para descansar, "Axxis II" fue lanzado en agosto de 1990, y obtuvo un éxito similar al de su predecesor. Dos meses después, el grupo giraba de nuevo por Alemania, Austria y Suiza. En mayo de 1991, convertidos en uno de los grupos revelación de la escena, grababan "Access All Areas", disco en directo. Dos años después, en 1993, llegaba "The Big Thrill" producido en Filadelfia y Nueva York por Joey Balin. Como curiosidad, este disco fue el último vinilo producido por la fábrica de EMI antes de su cierre, provocado por la muerte del vinilo a favor del CD. The Big Thrill llegaba acompañado de una gira, esta vez no como teloneros, sino como cabezas de cartel y con teloneros (Gorky Park). Durante ese tour pasaron por los festivales Rock Am Ring (Alemania) y Rock Auf Der Insel (Austria) Un año después, entre octubre y diciembre de 1994, "Matters Of Survival" era producido en los estudios Goodnight LA (Los Ángeles) por Keith Olsen. El álbum llegaba a las calles en febrero del año siguiente, con la consecuente gira, en la que pasaron por el Rock Am Ring y el Rock Im Park. "Voodoo Vibes", el disco más rockero del grupo, fue producido en los DierksStudios (Colonia) en octubre de 1996, y lanzado en febrero de 1997, sucedido de una gira por Alemania en mayo, y una gira acompañando a U.D.O. por Alemania y Suiza en diciembre, tras la cual el guitarrista Walter Pietsch abandonada el grupo. Los restantes miembros, Harry Oellers, Bernhard Weiß y Richtie Michalski, decidieron continuar juntos y buscar unos nuevos guitarrista y bajista. Desde mayo a diciembre de 1998 estuvieron haciendo pruebas hasta que, finalmente, Guido Wehmeyer como guitarrista y Udo(Kuno) Niemeyer como bajista pasaron a formar parte de la banda. Inmediatamente, Axxis en conjunto se puso a trabajar en "Back to the Kingdom", esta vez bajo Massacre Records, que llegaría en marzo de 2000, tras un parón de 2 años. La gira por Alemania fue un éxito, y vendría seguida de "Collection of Power", un EP concebido por la banda como un regalo a los fans. En septiembre de 2001 salió a la venta "Eyes of Darkness", CD multimedia que incluía un juego (Rockmine) y un clip en directo de la canción "Shadowman". En 2004, el grupo resurgía con "Time Machine", noveno disco. Dos años más tarde llegaría "Paradise in Flames", de gran éxito, considerado una de las obras maestras del grupo. Este álbum se caracteriza por un sonido mucho más renovado con respecto a sus trabajos anteriores, así como una fuerza y un desarrollo de las canciones más amplio, apareciendo más los teclados. Pero la característica más importante y notoria de este álbum es la intervención de la cantante "Lakonia", la cual ya había participado en su disco anterior como corista, pero que en este trabajo toma un papel protagonista, mostrando su bella y aguda voz en temas como "Take my hand" "Dance with the dead" o en la preciosa balada "Dont leave me". Es considerado como el mejor disco de Axxis por numerosos fans, y dentro del cual se encuentra una de las canciones que ya forman parte de las imprescindibles de esta banda: Tales of glory island. Tras el lanzamiento del décimo disco de la banda, no podía faltar un recopilatorio, y efectivamente "Best of Axxis" salió el mismo año 2006, aunque el lanzamiento quedó ligeramente empañado por la marcha del guitarrista, Guido, del grupo. En 2007 sale a la venta su undécimo disco: Doom of Destiny. En 2007 y 2008 hacen una gira junto a Gamma Ray y Helloween. Tras la gira el grupo anuncia la salida de su batería, André Hilgers, quien se une a los también alemanes Rage. Mientras que el grupo realizaba pruebas para encontrar sustituto, el puesto estuvo suplido por Dirk Brand. Finalmente, tras una intensa búsqueda, Axxis anuncia a Alex Landenburg (hasta ese momento batería de gira de Annihilator) como nuevo batería. En junio de 2009 vuelven a España para actuar en el Metalway Festival de Zaragoza, compartiendo cartel con bandas como Motorhead, Manowar, Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath), Twisted Sister... y muchas otras bandas más. Después de las giras ofrecidas en 2008, Axxis comenzó a trabajar en un nuevo proyecto, que salió a la venta el 28 de agosto de 2009 y lleva como título "Utopia", del cual ya afirmaron en su web que sería un trabajo muy especial para celebrar su 20 aniversario. Este álbum se presenta mucho más veloz y potente que sus predecesores, con una especial fijación en los teclados y en los solos rápidos. La portada está de nuevo a cargo de Derek Gores, quien realizó las portadas de los álbumes anteriores. En España salió a la venta, aparte de la edición estándar, una edición especial con la "Canción del 20 Aniversario" donde colaboran, entre otros, artistas como Doro y Andi Deris (Cantante de la también alemana banda Helloween) En diciembre de 2009, realizan en Alemania un concierto llamado "20 Years Anniversary Show" para conmemorar sus 20 años de carrera. Este concierto se caracterizó por interpretar numerosos temas de la inmensa mayoría de sus álbumes y por contar con antiguos miembros de la banda que también subieron al escenario para realizar un concierto memorable. Tras el directo, se anunció en la web que en un futuro sería lanzado un DVD del concierto, con otros añadidos, cuya producción se completaría en 2011. Este Disco/DVD fue el primero que publicaron desde su propia productora, "Phonotraxx Music" desde la cual van a editar todos sus futuros trabajos. En mayo de 2012, publicarían un álbum de covers titulado "Rediscovered", el cual versionaba canciones de los años 70-80. Temas como "Stayin Alive" de los Bee Gees, "Another day in paradise" de Phil Collins o incluso la balada "My heart will go on" de James Horner fueron versionadas con un sonido impecable. El disco tuvo una acogida muy buena y vendieron muchos más álbumes de los que esperaban. En mayo de 2013, publican un video haciendo referencia al próximo trabajo, que consistirá en la segunda parte de su primer disco: Kingdom of the Night II.El estilo de esta banda germana siempre ha estado ligado al Heavy metal con influencias del rock n' roll. En los inicios, el estilo era más ochentero con un sonido clásico, que perduró en los álbumes siguientes aunque fueron algo más tranquilos. A partir de 1995, la música de esta banda optó primero por un cambio en el modo de hacer las canciones (Matter of survival) y luego por un sonido más rockero (Voodoo vibes). Poco después, volvieron a sus raíces y con el "Back to the kingdom" realizaron una de sus obras maestras sonando como en el primer álbum (de ahí su nombre) pero a su vez mostrando más calidad y experiencia. Pero fue en 2004 (Time machine) donde la evolución de Axxis comenzó. En este álbum se apreciaban nuevas técnicas como el doble pedal, una aparición mucho más notable del teclado, los coros con voces femeninas... y luego con "Paradise In flames" el sonido de Axxis llegó a lo más alto por diversas razones, así como un preludio orquestado, canciones que alternan voces masculinas y femeninas, solos de guitarra rápidos y melódicos y canciones en su totalidad que han hecho historia en este grupo como "Tales of glory Island" "Take my hand" o "Lady moon" eso si, nunca abandonando el Heavy Metal que los ha caracterizado, y los caracteriza. Se dice que el Axxis contemporáneo es Power, esto se debe a que en los últimos discos han aparecido canciones de Power Metal, como "Doom of destiny" o "Icewind" pero la mayoría siguen siendo de Heavy Metal. Uno de los rasgos más característicos de Axxis desde siempre es la aparición de una o más baladas en los álbumes. Suelen tratar temas amorosos, y sus letras son en la mayoría de los casos muy profundas. Cabrían destacar "Only God Knows", "Stay dont leave me", "Angel" o "Lost in love"

Stefan Westerberg y Dennis Vestman formaron Mayer's Eve en 1995. La banda cambió su nombre a Steel Attack en 1997 debido a muchos miembros entrantes y salientes. La banda comenzó con el estilo de las bandas europeas de power metal, con contenido lírico sobre batallas épicas, dragones y espadas mezcladas con voces agudas. Los álbumes de esa época son Where Mankind Fails (1999), Fall into Madness (2001) y el álbum Predator of the Empire (2003). Sin embargo, con un cambio de vocalista en 2003 (Ronny Hemlin), la banda y el álbum de 2004 Enslaved obtuvieron una nueva "dirección", tanto musical como líricamente. Su antiguo sonido de power metal se volvió a crear para ser más agresivo, y el contenido lírico estándar de la mayoría de las bandas de power metal (dragones, espadas, etc.) ya no se usaba. Durante 2007 tres miembros decidieron abandonar la banda, Anden Andersson, Tony Elfving y Johan Jalonen. Desde entonces, las tres posiciones han sido reemplazadas, a saber, Johan Löfgren (bajo), Peter Morén (batería) y Simon Johansson (guitarras). Monuments Uncovered is the 10th studio album of the German power metal band Mystic Prophecy. It was released by Massacre Records on the 12th of January 2018 and contains 11 metal cover tracks of famous rock hits primarily from the 70s & 80s with the exception of "Are You Gonna Go My Way" making it the only song releasing from the 90s.

Thor week continues with a review of an old Wizard album, Thor! Thor is the 8th studio album by Wizard, released January 31, 2009, by Massacre Records. It is a concept album about Norse mythology and the god of thunder, Thor. It was the first Wizard album with two guitar players. Andromeda История Andromeda началась с того, что в 1999 году гитарист Йохан Рейнгольдс притащил демку "Welcome To Forever" на лейбл War Music. "Extension Of The Wish" привел в восторг поклонников Dream Theater - это была солидная прог-металлическая программа с техничной работой ударника, повышенным содержанием клавиш, и гитарными поливами в духе Мальмстина. Промо-турне ограничилось территорией Швеции, но осенью Andromeda выступили на голландском фестивале Progpower. Кстати, у микрофона на постоянной основе теперь находился Дэвид Фремберг, и из-за этого было решено перезаписать дебютник с его вокалом. Пробный вариант переделки выпустила французская фирма NTS, и потому первым делом группа совершила вояж именно в эту страну, где ей пришлось выступать вместе с Evergrey. По окончании тур-де-франс закипела работа над вторым альбомом, причем в качестве продюсера выступил сам Мартин. Последний факт, видимо, стал одной из причин того, что клавиш стало поменьше, но вместе с тем в музыке Andromeda появились и другие изменения. Повышенное внимание уделялось вокалу, а композиции стали сложнее и атмосфернее. Герт уже не принимал участие в сессиях "II=I", и его партии взял на себя Рейнгольдс. Новый бас-гитарист нашелся несколько позже, и на сопутствующих гастролях эту должность примерил на себя Фабиан Густавссон. В 2004-м с помощью Century Media состоялась мировая премьера "Final Extension", а шведские музыканты тем временем ваяли третью полнометражку (любопытно, что Лейон к тому времени уже параллельно трудился в A.C.T.). На "Chimera", продюсированием которого опять занимался Хедин, группа сбросила темп, а также упростила структуру песен, что приблизило ее к хард-року. Впрочем, фанаты Andromeda лояльно отнеслись ко всем новшествам, тем более что коллектив продолжал придерживаться прогрессивных корней. "Химера" прошла успешную концертную обкатку в Швеции и Турции, а в 2007-м команда решила запечатлеть свою живую деятельность на DVD "Playing Off The Board". Если "Chimera" вышла на Massacre Records, то следующий лонгплей был реализован с помощью Nightmare Records. "The Immunity Zone" характеризовался повышенной тяжестью риффов и мрачной атмосферой, но при этом звучал энергично и интеллигентно. Альбом вновь вернул шведов к влиянию Dream Theater, что в полной мере проявилось на завершающем программу эпике "Veil Of Illumination". А последователь четвёртого полноформатника вышел и вовсе на Inner Wound Recordings. Релиз "Manifest Tyranny" состоялся 25 ноября 2011 года.
