Electricity from renewable sources provided for over half of total demand in February, according to provisional data from grid operator EirGrid. Wind power alone supplied almost half of the country's electricity needs, accounting for just over 48% of all electricity used in Ireland. Total generation from wind energy amounted to 1,411 GWh (Gigawatt hours) over the month, which saw a new peak wind power record set on Thursday, 13 February. Overall, renewables provided 54.5% of electricity in February when other sources, including grid-scale solar and hydropower, were included. Overall, electricity system demand stood at 2,918 GWh in February. Gas generation accounted for 31% of all electricity used in February, with 12% being imported via interconnection, 2% coming from coal, and the remaining 1% from other sources. EirGrid is responsible for leading Ireland's transition to a low-carbon future so that 80% of electricity can come from renewables, as set out in Government targets. Currently the electricity grid can accommodate up to 75% of electricity from renewable sources at any one time. This is known as the system non-synchronous penetration (SNSP) limit. EirGrid is aiming to further increase the SNSP limit. Charlie McGee, System Operational Manager at EirGrid, said: "February was one of our strongest months on record for renewables on the grid, as demonstrated by the new peak wind record of 3,884 Megawatts on the evening of 13 February. As ever, this was supported by a mix of generation sources which help to ensure a stable flow of power at all times on the grid."

How much electricity will AI need? To train AI models companies use graphics processing units, also known as GPUs. They are now starting to build larger clusters of GPUs, which requires even more electricity. How much electricity you may ask? AI data centers use about 30 Megawatts of electricity at a time. If you don't understand megawatts, let's just say it's a lot of power. Picture 30 Walmart stores and how much electricity they use at any given time, that is estimated at 30 megawatts. Fast forward five years into the future when there will be more data centers and larger AI models. It is estimated they will require 5 gigawatts of electricity. 5 gigawatts is a huge amount of energy, it is about the same amount of energy needed to power a city like Manhattan in New York. Also, a big concern is within the next five years these massive data centers could consume up to 17% of US electricity. You may be thinking just build more power plants. The problem is data centers can be completed within 18 to 24 months, but to build a power plant can take over three years and that's provided all permits and regulations are met on time. There's also the concern of how do you get that energy to the data centers, you're going to need more transmission lines, but that can take 10 years or longer to get that task completed. Wind and solar are not the answer because data centers need power 24 hours seven days a week and when the sun goes down or the wind stops, there's no power. I see some roadblocks ahead with fast moving AI, maybe we need to slow down a little bit?   Mag Seven capital expenditures could be a big problem! The Mag Seven, which includes Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, and Tesla has been a group that has dominated the stock market the last couple of years. Much of the excitement around the stocks have been tied to advancements in AI, but there has still been little evidence these companies (outside of Nvidia) have been able to profit from the trend. A major concern I have is these companies are investing tons of money and the big question is how profitable will these investments be? It is estimated Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta will spend $200 billion on artificial intelligence this year alone and their budgets have continued to grow. If we look at total capital expenditures, also known as capex, the budgets have grown immensely for many of these companies. Amazon is projected to spend around $105 billion on capital expenditures in 2025, up 27% from 2024, which came after a 57% increase over 2023. Microsoft has guided to $80 billion in capex for its fiscal 2025, up 80% from 2024, which was up 58% from the year before. Alphabet estimated capex of $75 billion in 2025, up 43% from 2023, which was up 63% from 2022. Meta has a forecast of $60 billion to $65 billion of capex in 2025, up 68% at the midpoint from 2024, which was up by 37% from the year before. The big problem with major capex is investors won't see much of a difference in earnings, but there will be major hits to free cashflow. Capex is generally expensed or depreciated over time, which means it won't hit earnings in a major way initially, but it could weigh on earnings growth over time as that expense remains for years to come and potentially grows if capex budgets continue to climb. As an example, Meta is projected to see $68 billion of net income this year, but free cash flow could slide 25% to $40 billion. Investments of this magnitude need to pay off, especially considering the high valuations for these stocks. Time will tell if these investments work out for all these companies, but I must say I'm skeptical they will all be winners from this movement 5-10 years from now. Investors need to look at the full picture and understand all the moving parts, which includes how all the financial statements work together. At our firm we don't just look at earnings, we also want to see good cash flow and a strong balance sheet.   Producer Prices come in hotter than expected    The Producer Price Index, also known as the PPI, showed prices in January climbed 0.4% compared to last month. This topped the expectation of 0.3% and led to an annual increase of 3.5%. Core PPI, which excludes food and energy, produced an annual gain of 3.4%, which was lower than last month's reading of 3.5%. While these data points were a little hotter than expected, economists now have inputs to estimate the closely followed PCE report. It is interesting that after the release of the CPI and PPI, which were both higher than expected, estimates for core PCE actually look quite favorable. On a monthly basis core PCE is expected to show a 0.22% increase, which would be a nice deceleration from December's reading of 0.45% and on annual basis estimates are looking for a reasonable 2.5% increase. We will have to see what the actual results look like for the PCE later this month, but with these reports now in hand I continue to believe that while inflation is not at the Fed target, I still don't see it as a major problem.   The True Cost of Credit Card Interest Everyone knows that paying credit card interest is a bad thing, but it's less well known how that interest is accrued.  Interest is calculated using an average daily balance method, which means every single purchase begins accruing interest immediately.  Purchases made on a credit card throughout a monthly statement period increase the outstanding balance.  After a month of spending, if the full statement balance is paid by the due date, which is generally 20 to 25 days after the statement period ends, no interest will be due, even though it was accruing during that time.  This is known as the grace period which is essentially an interest-free loan on those purchases. For example, if you spend a total of $5,000 through a statement period during January, you will not need to make a $5,000 payment until the end of February to avoid any interest. However, if you do not make that full payment by the due date in February, your grace period is void and you will owe accrued interest from the date those purchases were made in January, not from the due date in February.  Also, any additional purchases made in February and afterward begin accruing interest immediately without a grace period, even though those statement periods have not ended yet.  Since interest is calculated using the average daily balance method, the unpaid balance and interest compounds on itself making it more and more difficult to pay off. Credit cards have a monthly minimum payment, which is usually $25 to $50 dollars, which paying prevents a mark on your credit report, but it does not stop interest from accruing.  Credit cards can be a great tool as they can give you points and fraud protection, but those benefits are greatly outweighed when a balance is being carried.   Companies Discussed: Dollar Tree, Inc. È stata avviata a Fiumetorto, nel Comune di Termini Imerese, in provincia di Palermo, la prima fase della posa del cavo sottomarino del ramo est, finanziato con 500 milioni di euro, che collegherà Sicilia e Campania. Il Tyrrhenian Link prevede la realizzazione di due linee elettriche sottomarine in corrente continua a 500 chilovolt, per un totale di 970 chilometri di cavo e una capacità di trasporto di 1.000 MegaWatt per ciascuna tratta. La produzione e la posa del cavo sottomarino lungo la Termini Imerese-Battipaglia, effettuata con la nave Leonardo da Vinci, sono affidate a Prysmian, che nel 2021 si è aggiudicata il contratto quadro per la progettazione, la fornitura, l'installazione e il collaudo di oltre 1.500 chilometri di cavi, prodotti nello stabilimento di Arco Felice, Napoli. Per la prima volta un cavo HVDC verrà posato a 2.150 metri di profondità, fissando nuovi standard di mercato. L'intero progetto sarà operativo nel 2028.fsc/gtr

First off is the Western Green Energy Hub has submitted its proposal for federal environmental approval in Western Australia, someplace we're going to be pretty soon. The project plans to install 70 gigawatts of wind and solar capacity through 35 power nodes. Now, each node will include 2 to 3 gigawatts of generation and about 1. 5 gigawatts of electrolyzer. Phil, Western Australia has a number of renewable projects planned. What makes this one unique? Well, Phil Totaro: it's the first one. They're Allen Hall: going to Phil Totaro: do it. Yeah. Because of all these mega projects that have been proposed throughout Australia. There's some in Queensland and South Australia, and I think one in Victoria as well. And what we're talking about is something that's like, 30, 40, 50, 60, in this case, 70 gigawatts worth of generation capacity. That's almost. I mean, 70 gigawatts is almost what the entire Australian grid produces on an annual basis. So what they're doing with this is they're saying, all right, it's going to accommodate some, increased electricity demand. Although the, the amount that, that it's going to increase is, is modest compared to the, the amount they're going to be generating. But as you mentioned, they're going to add all these, um, Electrolyzer is to be able to produce hydrogen on a lot of these mega projects in Australia that have been proposed. That's their intent is to, build these these things with, turbines that are going to be at least 10. Megawatts each, if not bigger. The reality with this is it is the first of these kind of mega projects to, to get into this environmental permitting and consent queue. And so this is the start of what could be, a pretty major undertaking. Joel Saxum: Something to think about here too, is this is in Western Australia. So if you know anything about Western or if you know anything about Australia's grid, it's not very well connected East to West. And the major demand centers are all in the East. You have Perth in the West, of course, but that Western side of Australia, the grid doesn't need much energy to support it. It doesn't have a whole lot of demand compared to the rest of the, or the, to the Eastern parts of the country. So at the end of the day, 70 gigawatts is great, but the This is going to be just a, not just, but for the most part, a green hydrogen project, right? They don't need 70 gigawatts of clean energy to fulfill the grid needs over there. That doesn't demand that much. So most of this energy was used for hydrogen, green hydrogen creation. And that's one thing that Australia does really, really, really well. They have a lot of natural resources and they know how to export. So you, you look to see this project.

In this episode of the Solar Maverick Podcast, Benoy interviews Peter Schmitt, Director of Project Development at US Solar. Peter shares insights on agrivoltaics, highlights the key states where US Solar is focusing its solar development efforts, and discusses emerging trends in the agrivoltaics industry. US Solar is a developer, owner, operator, and financier of solar generation and storage projects with a focus on emerging markets, agrivoltaics, and community solar programs with over 200 Megawatts of completed projects and over 2 Gigawatts in construction and development   Benoy Thanjan Benoy Thanjan is the Founder and CEO of Reneu Energy and he is also an advisor for several solar startup companies.  He has extensive project origination, development, and financial experience in the renewable energy industry and in the environmental commodities market.   This includes initial site evaluation, permitting, financing, sourcing equipment, and negotiating the long-term energy and environmental commodities off-take agreements. He manages due diligence processes on land, permitting, and utility interconnection and is in charge of financing and structuring through Note to Proceed (“NTP”) to Commercial Operation Date (“COD”). Benoy composes teams suitable for all project development and construction tasks. He is also involved in project planning and pipeline financial modeling. He has been part of all sides of the transaction and this allows him to provide unique perspectives and value. Benoy has extensive experience in financial engineering to make solar projects profitable.   Before founding Reneu Energy, he was the SREC Trader in the Project Finance Group for SolarCity which merged with Tesla in 2016.  He originated SREC trades with buyers and co-developed their SREC monetization and hedging strategy with the senior management of SolarCity to move into the east coast markets.    Benoy was the Vice President at Vanguard Energy Partners which is a national solar installer where he focused on project finance solutions for commercial scale solar projects.  He also worked for Ridgewood Renewable Power, a private equity fund, where he analyzed potential investments in renewable energy projects and worked on maximizing the financial return of the projects in the portfolio.  Benoy also worked on the sale of all of the renewable energy projects in Ridgewood's portfolio.   He was in the Energy Structured Finance practice for Deloitte & Touche and in Financial Advisory Services practice at Ernst & Young.  Benoy received his first experience in Finance as an intern at D.E. Shaw & Co., which is a global investment firm with 37 billion dollars in investment capital. He has a MBA in Finance from Rutgers University and a BS in Finance and Economics from the Stern School of Business at New York University.  Benoy was an Alumni Scholar at the Stern School of Business.     Peter Schmitt Peter is a Director of Project Development focusing on US Solar's grid scale developments across the country, ranging from 50-300+ MW each.  He also spearheads the company's vegetation innovations, including the advancement of pollinator seed mixes, experimental crops, beehives, and the introduction of sheep to sites.  Prior to joining US Solar, Peter worked as an internal consultant at Xcel Energy in transmission, worked for a public utility in Austria, and founded a commercial compost company. Demanding investment in the grid and generation US electricity demand growth in 2024 has run at a faster pace than GDP. This follows a decade in which demand hardly grew. And while data centers are an important driver of this recent growth, there are other, more important factors, namely building electrification. Reshoring and electric vehicles have also been a boost. The point is that the factors behind this growth are many, meaning that a slowdown in one area isn't likely to derail what should be years of increasing power needs. Our analysts discuss the challenges that nuclear faces in meeting US demand needs, the role of natural gas and the capital equipment that will be needed for both the grid and data centers. What are we doing? Allen Hall: I'm not with Phil. This is fun. We should do more of this. See, here's the problem with this whole thing in Kyle, Texas is that they chose the 416th ranked name. You got to pick something in the top 10. Well, Joel, the German government has agreed to speed up authorizations for wind turbines and industrial plants. The new law aims to enable faster construction through digitalization, And reducing bureaucratic hurdles. Plants affected include wind turbines, metal mills, foundries, waste disposal, and hydrogen production facilities. And I think Rosemary would be against the hydrogen production facility, but the change is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks and. Renewable energy plants will get special priority for faster approval under the coalition agreement. So that has been one of the big holdups in Germany in terms of wind deployment. They don't have the space to put up a thousand turbines, right? So you're getting turbines spread around the country a good bit. And every little province town has had restrictions, right? And they've been trying to remove those restrictions. Piece by piece. This is a big move for Germany, I think, Joel. Joel Saxum: Yeah. If you look at the way it's this, these things are rolling out in developments worldwide, right? So the ACP and the developers and people have been complaining about permit restrictions and let's get this thing streamlined, let's get this, able to put more Megawatts in the ground for renewable energy production. Everybody on the U S has been screaming about that. They've been screaming about it at wind.
