In this episode of Building the Open Metaverse, hosts Patrick Cozzi and Marc Petit discuss artificial intelligence ethics, safety, and governance with attorney Liz Rothman. Rothman provides an overview of the key issues being debated regarding responsible AI development and use. She explains that conversations are focused on three main areas - algorithmic bias and fairness, workforce impacts from automation, and existential risks from advanced AI. On the topic of bias, Rothman emphasizes the need for equity, transparency and privacy protections as AI can amplify discrimination and tracking. She notes that committees globally are trying to assess and plan for the transformative effects AI could have on human labor and jobs. Existentially, questions arise about human identity and agency if AI reaches more generalized intelligence. According to Rothman, urgent current issues involve building trust, safety and privacy around AI systems, as synthetic media makes determining truth more difficult. She states that maintaining personal autonomy requires responsible innovation. Rothman advocates for transparency standards like documentation methods that expose AI model provenance and training data sourcing. However, she acknowledges commercial interests often prevent full transparency. The discussion covers intellectual property rules for AI-generated content, which vary between countries. While US law presently requires human authorship, the UK protects some AI output. Rothman suggests IP law could incentivize AI development if adapted with disclosure requirements rather than outright restrictions. However, problematic training data cannot be removed from models once deployed, posing challenges for liability. Rothman expresses hope in rising international dialogues but concern that regulatory solutions are struggling to match the rapid pace of technological change. She highlights organizations pursuing multidisciplinary cooperation on AI ethics and governance, like XRSI and the Metaverse Standards Forum. While blockchain hype has affected cryptocurrency perceptions, Rothman sees potential benefits for digital identity and content provenance. She concludes AI oversight requires balancing innovation with ethical precautions. ==== Have any comments or questions? Email the show Feedback@Buildingtheopenmetaverse.org Want more information? “I don't think that [the Metaverse] is going to be a replacement for seeing people in real life. I think it's actually going to be a significant extension of what we can do in real life and how we can meet people." On this episode of HYPERSCALE, I am joined by Sophia Moshasha, Vice President of the DC Chapter of the VR/AR Association, co-founder of XR women, and a producer and host of The Polys - WebXR Awards, who since 2017 has been actively engaged in the immersive technology community and a field expert consulted by leading media platforms. Over the years, Sophia has played a vital role in guiding policy and standard-setting organizations like the VR/AR Association, Congressional Reality Caucus, Metaverse Standards Forum, and the National Training and Simulation Association. Her efforts equip these entities to comprehend the immersive technology landscape, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the burgeoning interest in adopting these technologies. Immersive reality is a massive opportunity, but to truly leverage it, content will need to be at the forefront. As Sophia explains, XR will need to go beyond gaming. "We need these killer applications that will make people's lives easier." Part of the solution lies in defining these different realities. After all, the ‘metaverse' might not be the catch-all term we think it is. Right now, immersive reality is undergoing multiple growth phases, and seeing the integration of other technologies like AI, blockchain, edge computing and more. Ultimately, the goal will be for immersive reality to make our lives better and more functional and intuitive. And as publications by the EU are usually long, complicated and have a history of its own, it was good that Patrick Grady published a short summary on his blog Metaverse EU to explain how the Communication can be understood. In it the EU outlines a strategy about how to take leadership in the development of virtual worlds and what we would have called Metaverse in 2022. But the Communication uses the expression Web 4.0, which caused some irritation, expressed by industry professionals. The Metaverse Standards Forum announced today that they are “incorporated as an independent non-profit industry consortium.” The Khronos Group has been financially bootstrapping the Metaverse Standards Forum's efforts to see if there was enough interest, and they went from 37 founding members in June 2022 to now having over “2,400 members and multiple active Working and Exploratory Groups focused on driving pragmatic interoperability advances.” Now that they've incorporated as a 501(c)6 industry trade organization, they have “organized its own governance, finances, and operations. Working Group activities remain freely accessible to any member, while new paid membership tiers enable members to be elected to leadership roles in the Forum while funding Forum projects.” I had a chance to chat with Metaverse Standards Forum Chair and the President of the Khronos Group Neil Trevett about the latest developments, and we dive into some updates on the latest member-driven approved Working Groups including Metaverse Standards Register, Digital Asset Management, 3D Asset Interoperability, & Real/Virtual World Integration. We also cover some of the Exploratory Working Groups that are in the pipeline for approval to becoming a full Working Group that includes Digital Fashion Wearables for Avatars, Interoperable Characters/Avatars, Privacy, Cybersecurity & Identity, 3D Web Interoperability, Network Requirements and Capabilities, & Technical Interoperability and End-User Troubleshooting. Again, the Metaverse Standards Forum is not developing these standards, but they're facilitating discussions amongst other Standards Development Organizations and open source formats in order to facilitating interoperability with however the future of the Metaverse continues to unfold. I was able to get a much clearer idea for what's been happening since June of 2022 when they launched to the pipeline of various different working groups, thousands of participating members, and coming soon a searchable database of the Metaverse Standards Register that is keeping track of the various open standards that may be relevant to the continued development of the Open Metaverse. You can find out how to join the Metaverse Standards Forum if you'd like to participating in helping to shape the future of the open Metaverse, and be sure to check out this presentation PDF for even more context.
In this episode of ACM ByteCast, Rashmi Mohan hosts Neil Trevett, Vice President of Developer Ecosystems at NVIDIA and the President of the Khronos Group, a nonprofit consortium publishing open standards in a variety of areas related to computer graphics. He has worked to bring about standardization in the graphics world, giving developers the ability to extend and expand the capabilities of their visual systems. His accomplishments include bringing interactive 3D graphics to the web, creation of the glTF format for 3D assets, and recently founding the Metaverse Standards Forum. Neil talks about what drew him to computer science and how he became interested in the visual impact of 3D graphics, a field in which he has spent most of his career. He unpacks the evolution of computer graphics and discusses his role at NVIDIA, where his work focuses on helping developers make good use of GPUs. He also explains the benefits of standardization in industry and how open standards can enable innovation and interoperability. Neil also explains how 3D is changing the landscape of e-commerce and online shopping and gives his perspective on the Metaverse and how it can leverage other disruptive technologies.
The term 'Open Metaverse' gets thrown around a lot but what does it actually mean? How will we build a metaverse where avatars, assets and environments all are able to communicate and work with each other across multiple worlds? We discuss these questions and many more on this week's Welcome to the Metaverse Podcast with the awesome Neil Trevett. Neil is the Chair of The Metaverse Standards Forum, which is helping to coordinate the efforts of over 1800 companies and individuals to create these open and 'inter-operable' standards, i.e. the essential workings of the full metaverse vision. This conversation is a crucial and really fundamental one. One that will likely set your understanding apart from many others in the space. Neil was brilliant, explained these concepts in a simple and accessible but thorough way. He was also a lot of fun! I really enjoyed this episode! From the metaverse to energy, technology evangelist, Jason Elliott, talks through 2022 and why combined tech and collaboration are key.
Neil Trevett is the Vice President of Developer Ecosystems at NVIDIA, President of Khronos Group and Chair of the Metaverse Standards Forum. He joined me in a conversation in which we cover in detail why standards how vital for the metaverse to emerge and what could happen in its absence https://www.intometamedia.com/ At Nvidia, Neil is responsible for enabling and encouraging advanced applications to use GPU acceleration. At the Khronos Group Neil created and chaired the working group that defined the industry standard for 3D graphics on mobile devices. At Khronos he also chairs a working group for portable, parallel heterogeneous computing, and helped initiate the WebGL standard that is bringing interactive 3D graphics to the Web. He's now working to help formulate standards for vision and neural network inferencing. Previously, as Vice President of 3Dlabs, Neil was at the forefront of the silicon revolution bringing interactive 3D to the PC, and he established the embedded graphics division of 3Dlabs to bring advanced visual processing to a wide-range of non-PC platforms. Neil was elected President for eight consecutive years of the Web3D Consortium dedicated to creating open standards for communicating real-time 3D on the Internet.
The Khronos Group published a blog announcement on November 3rd titled, “Deliver Interactive Experiences with glTF: A Node Graph-Based Approach,” which is adding an interactive extension called KHR_Behaviors to glTF (the *.jpg format for 3D objects). This adds interactive capabilities to glTF objects that are similar to Unreal Engines Blueprint system, Unity's Visual Scripting Language, and NVIDIA Omniverse's Omnigraph systems. I had a chance to sit down with Threekit's Ben Houston, who has been collaborating with the Khronos Group on this interactive behavior extension to get a run down of how this fits into an overall development of an open and interoperable Metaverse. (see reference implementation here). The Metaverse Standards Forum is an independent and separate process that started after this specific effort, and it's role is to foster collaboration among Standards Development Organization to make recommendations for standards that are in service towards creating an open and interoperable Metaverse, and does not have any power to enforce adoption or promote any one standard at the expense of others. While glTF with interactive extensions may eventually be a building block towards creating a complex of standards that replicates many of the functionality of a game engine, but within a broader set of open standards. Moving from static objects to interactive experiences that are dynamic, unfold over time, respond and interact with the environment is certainly a key feature of an immersive virtual world, and the abstraction of that interactivity into a visual scripting language. Tune in for more details, and then check out the behave-graph reference implementation and the introductory webinar for more context.

And the cost of raw materials needed for EVs has doubled during the pandemic, according to AlixPartners, a consultancy. Notes: Accel, one of the top global venture capital firms, has raised a $4 billion fund to invest in what it calls later-stage ventures. The firm expects to provide “expansion capital” to promising companies within its portfolio worldwide, as well as companies that are new to the firm, it said in a blogpost yesterday. “Our decades-long experience has also taught us the importance of patience and discipline — especially during periods of volatility and change like we are experiencing today,” the VC firm said in the blog post. Meta, Facebook's parent company, software giant Microsoft, Japan's Sony, and IKEA are among some 37 global companies that have come together to form the Metaverse Standards Forum to develop common standards for the online world of avatars and 3D experiences. Open to any organisation at no cost, the Forum will focus on pragmatic, action-based projects such as implementation prototyping, hackathons, plugfests, and open-source tooling to accelerate the testing and adoption of metaverse standards, while also developing consistent terminology and deployment guidelines, it said in the post. Notably, Google and Apple aren't participating yet. British health authorities are urgently investigating a rare polio virus discovery in sewage samples in London, potentially putting Britain's polio-free status at risk for the first time in almost two decades, CNBC reports. Several waste samples from the Beckton sewage treatment work in Newham, east London tested positive for vaccine-derived polio virus between February and May, the UK Health Security Agency said in a statement. The agency has declared a national incident and informed the World Health Organisation of the situation.
