Some four weeks after the curtain fell on the latest Canadian Gaming Summit, the Gaming News Canada Show welcomed back regular contributors Amanda Brewer and Phill Gray. The two gambling industry veterans provided their thoughts and layers to the annual gathering of operators, regulators, suppliers, politicians, etc., to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Brewer, who spoke on the Alberta: A new gold rush? panel at last month's summit, and Gray delved into the details of what regulated gambling will look like in the western Canada province, the influence Ontario's existing industry will have on the Alberta model and which operators will be heading west when that market hangs the Open For Business shingle. We also asked the resident GNC experts for their respective perspectives on the latest around the conversation about gambling advertising, and a recent callby the Canada Centre on Substance Use and Addiction for the introduction of a national strategy to address gambling-related harms in our home and native land. Finally, Gray and Brewer gave their reaction to the news last week that Betway is pulling its sports betting product out of the U.S. of A. (but continuing to operate both sports wagering and igaming in Ontari-ari-ari-o). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Martha Otton was among the busiest attendees at the recent Canadian Gaming Summit. The executive director of iGaming Ontario was a ubiquitous presence around the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, whether it was speaking formally with operators in Ontario's regulated sports betting and igaming market in her role as executive director, participating in a panel on the province's successful industry with OLG president Duncan Hannay, OLG board chair Jim Warren and AGCO CEO/Registrar Dr. Karin Schnarr, and holding a cornucopia of informal conversations. Otton, who was put in charge of creating the conduct-and-manage subsidiary of AGCO in February 2021, also made time to join us on the latest episode of the Gaming News Canada Show. We solicited some additional thoughts to her words at the conference about the iGO-commissioned report conducted by Deloitte around economic contribution from Year 2 of a regulated industry which today includes almost 50 operators and 80 gambling websites/apps. Our interview occurred minutes after Alberta minister Dale Nally announced the western Canadian province will follow Ontario's lead in opening a regulated gaming marketplace, so we asked Otton for her reaction. The iGO boss also addressed the ongoing evolution of legal gambling in Ontario and her still-young organization's focus on improving its use of technology and data. Hosted on Acast. For three and a half years now, your humble host has listened and learned from many, many voices across all sectors of the gambling industry. And some of those experts prompt us to go all E.F. Hutton when they speak. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MXqb1a3Apg One of those very learned people is Benjie Cherniak, who returned to the Gaming News Canada Show after a busy couple of months piling up the frequent flier miles, including stops for NEXT.io conferences in New York and Malta. The native Montrealer, an investor and advisor to a cornucopia of companies in the gaming space (including his investment in the proprietors of GNC) was appointed to the board of directors of Kambi Group last month. We asked Cherniak to chime in on several topics in the industry these days, including the happenings around mergers and acquisitions (to wit: DraftKings acquiring Jackpocket and Sports IQ Analytics and rumblings it will also bring Simplebet into the DK family; FanDuel's acquisition of BeyondPlay; and the sale of Waterloo-based Quarter4 to FairPlay Sports Media). He also provided some sundry thoughts on the discussions and debates around the still-newish regulated gambling marketplaces in Ontario, and states across the U.S. of A., the creation of media and marketing content for sportsbook and igaming operators, and the ongoing innovation happening in the business. Cherniak also had some advice for first-timers attending the Canadian Gaming Summit, which gets underway today at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Given the recent cornucopia of happenings around the business of sports betting and igaming, we brought back the Gaming News Canada Show panel with Amanda Brewer and Phill Gray. The rapid-fire roundtable featuring the two gambling industry veterans opened with a discussion on the recent ruling by the Ontario Superior Court against the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke that the gaming model operated by iGaming Ontario is of the valid variety, and its potential impact on the future on other regulated provinces across Canada. Brewer, who will participate in a couple of panels at next month's Canadian Gaming Summit in Toronto, and Gray also weighed in on the agenda that's been created by SBC in collaboration with the Canadian Gaming Association for the three-day conference inside the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The conversation turned to south of the border where U.S. states such as Illinois are proposing tax hikes to regulated sports betting operators, and the recent snub by operators toward the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to discuss placing betting limitations. We also asked our pair of panelists for their thoughts on the rising wave around women's sports, including an exciting final series in the Professional Women's Hockey League, the launch of the new WNBA season with rookie sensation Caitlin Clark, and this week's announcement about the incoming Northern Super League in Canada. But, how can we be in the high level of things and not the bits and bites, in order to be able to actually also have the time to build the business and take it forward? Because, see, whether we want it or not - we find ourselves dealing with the bits and bites - if we don't have the right tool to operate our business. And by that I mean - if we are doing things manually instead of digitally. Now, I'm not talking about making sheets on excel or just texting instead of calling - I'm talking about whole new levels of doing things digitally - from knowing our employees clocked in at the right place and time, knowing our employees know the job they need to do, knowing what's going on in the filed by receiving live forms or checklists - these all can be and should be done digitally! Not to mention your younger employees who work and live digitally, and expect to get that in their workplace as well. And if this sounds like fiction, it's not - just switch to Connecteam - a platform built for managers - with a lot of different capabilities that helps you truly manage your business and gives you back time to focus on what you need, while giving your employees the work experience they expect to get in 2023 going on 2024.Connecteam has a free plan and a 14 day free trial, try them today by checking out the link in the show notes. The angst over advertising by the sports betting industry took a different twist this week when professional sports leagues – led by the NFL and including the NHL, NBA, WNBA and MLB – got together with two U.S. broadcasters to create the Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising. The coalition, which received two thumbs-up from the American Gaming Association, has made a commitment to implement and maintain consumer protection policies with a six-pack of principles. So, SBC Americas editor Jessica Welman joined the Gaming News Canada Show presented by Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP to weigh in on reaction to the announcement along with the ongoing debate and discussion around advertising and the integration of sports betting content into broadcasts and other media outlets. Amanda Brewer (Kindred Group), Kris Abbott (Betano Canada), Nic Sulsky (PointsBet Canada) and Gavin Roth (Homestand Sports) added their own bon mots, and also shared their thoughts on the reaction to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario's announcement last week to make changes to the rules around advertising and the use of athletes and other celebrities.Aidan Brain, the VP Conference Production, Americas at SBC, joined us to help set the table for next month's SBC Summit North America in Secaucus, NJ, and for the June 13-15 Canadian Gaming Summit at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. SBC will be charge of managing the Canadian sports betting and gaming industry conference for the first time, and Brain gave a preview of what attendees can expect with the agenda and some bells and whistles. Our panelists also went around the horn on reporting over the past week that PointsBet has enlisted the services of a New York investment bank to seek out buyers for the operator's North American businesses. TUNE INTO THE TOWN: MAYOR TORY OFFICIALLY RESIGNS AND PREMIER DOUG FORD DOESN'T WANT A “LEFTY MAYOR” TO REPLACE HIM Libby Znaimer is joined by David Crombie, former Mayor of Toronto, Karen Stintz, CEO of Variety Village and Lauren O'Neil, Senior News Editor of BlogTO. A lot is happening at Toronto City Hall: the 2023 budget was finalized after a long and sometimes disruptive meeting in the city council chamber. Mayor John Tory made it clear that he would not use his powers to veto any of the amendments. And, Tory has officially summitted his resignation to the city clerk with his last day being this Friday. Meanwhile, Premier Doug Ford openly said that it would be a disaster if a "lefty Mayor'' replaced Tory. He also said that everything is running "tickety-boo" for Toronto which leaves some of us scratching our heads and wondering if he has been aware that not all things are clearly functioning well here. CANADIANS' ATTITUDES TOWARDS TIPPING Libby Znaimer continues the conversation with Lauren O'Neil of BlogTO. Together, they discuss a new survey by Angus Reid Institute on Canadians' attitudes about tipping at restaurants. THE CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW IS HERE Libby Znaimer is now joined by Jason Campbell, General Manager of the Canadian International Auto Show. Front and centre at this year's show are electric vehicles! Jason details what kind of cars you can expect to see there and why the trend of electric cars is only growing. The show takes place today at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
To cover a busy 8-10 days in the Canadian sports betting and gaming business, including some not-so-flattering coverage – especially on the frequent flow of advertisements on any and all platforms – we were joined by two veterans of the industry. Sue Schneider, the VP of strategy and growth, Americas for SBC, and Avenue H Capital principal Benjie Cherniak weighed in on both the challenges and opportunities for the still-young regulated gambling industry in Canada and the U.S. of A. Schneider also weighed in on the SBC/Gaming News Canada partnership announcement made last week and provided a glimpse of what attendees can expect at the June 13-15 Canadian Gaming Summit at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The growing field of art therapy argues that paintings and sculpture can improve your wellness. In collaboration with Art Toronto, host Shaun Francis examines the evidence with such experts as the contemporary artist Marcel Dzama, RxArt founder Diane Francis, Sinai Health psychiatrist-in-chief Dr. Lesley Wiesenfeld and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts art therapist Stephen Legari. Plus: Medcan's art strategist, Stacy Francis, discusses her innovative approach to art. Episode 89 webpage LINKS See this year's Art Toronto event featuring more than 300 Canadian artists, running from October 29-31 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and online until November 7. Here's a FAQ about the art therapy process Check out Diane Brown's nonprofit organization, RxART See Sinai Health's Creative Arts Therapy program. Learn more about Marcel Dzama here. Read about museotherapy at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, where art therapist Stephen Legari practices. See Medcan's art collection, curated by Marshall Webb and Stacy Francis, including Liz Magor's Gut Jacket. Check out some existing scientific research on art therapy, like a 2019 trial that suggested art therapy was effective in reducing anxiety and improving quality of life. Plus a 2017 study showed how just one art therapy session improved participants' mood, and reduced pain and anxiety. A 2014 article suggested art therapy can affect those with Alzheimer's and other dementias. The World Health Organization's 2019 scoping review on the role of the arts in improving health and wellbeing INSIGHTS “When we're patients, we're still people, and we're people who are going through stress and strain.” According to Dr. Lesley Wiesenfeld, our healthcare experience can be improved by the presence of art that is beautiful, engaging or thought-provoking. [04:31] The art on the walls at Medcan has been carefully picked out by Stacy Francis and art consultant Marshall Webb. The pieces were chosen for their potential to provoke attention and create a reaction in the people who see it. “I wanted [clients] to just have a contemplative moment that was not about the next test that they were about to receive,” says Francis. [07:03] Art therapy is the combination of therapy with the presence or creation of art. Stephen Legari is an art therapist at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. “Art therapy allows people to externalize their experience, enjoy a therapeutic relationship with art and feel supported as they're doing that,” says Legari. [10:36] When we do things that don't come naturally to us (like art!), we use and connect more neurons in our brains. And that becomes more important as we age, according to Dr. Lesley Wiesenfeld. “This is why people get advice about, if you're left handed, use your right hand, [and] if you love crosswords, you should actually try a number puzzle instead,” she says. [13:54] When we realize we aren't good at a hobby or activity, we tend to move on to something else. But Dr. Lesley Wiesenfeld says that “there's good support for the value of developing habits that are about both mastery, and tolerating our absolute mediocrity at something.” [26:24] Interest in art therapy is growing fast. RxART is a nonprofit organization that commissions artists to transform hospitals and healthcare settings, and its founder Diane Brown has seen the interest first-hand, both from hospitals and from artists. Every RxART project is fully funded by the charity and free to the hospitals. Artists receive small honorariums. “We don't have problems getting artists to collaborate. This episode the Intrepid Gang takes on four important national security trials that have been in the news and have important implications for national security law. First, we talk about the decision to revoke bail in the Ortis case and what this may say about where the trial is going. Next, it seems to be that a bifurcated system for evidence in the Huang case is causing endless delays – are the courts trying to find new solutions? Third, a guilty verdict was returned in the Sharif trial – but terrorism was never mentioned in the Court room. How does this compare to other recent terrorism charges? Fourth, rather than trying someone on financing charges in Canada, the government extradited Abdullahi to the US for a trial there. Is that because we are still bad at terrorism trials? Or maybe we just need to be more bold? (Programming note – a bit of distortion in this one as Leah was joining us from the literal floor of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre before briefing the Halifax Security Forum Fellows.) Note for our audience – this episode was taped November 15. There have been further developments in the Huang case (the government is now using a security certificate to stop information being disclosed which they believe is injurious to national security) which we will discuss soon!
It's time once again for another trade show! I know what you're thinking, oh god no. Trade Show's have become a part of life for most of us in building management and construction industries. But most of us hate them. Long hours and pricey registration fees leave many wondering why they even bother. Especially, if you don't get any business out if it! But that's the problem. You shouldn't be going to a trade show expecting to make millions in new business. That's not what they're for. This year at PM Expo I'm going to be podcasting live on the floor Dec 4-6 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. I'm going to be talking a lot about the real reason why you need to be at major trade show's like PM Expo. ____________________________________ INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/timbyrnealmostlive TWITTER: https://twitter.com/timbyrnealmost FACEBOOK: http://www.Facebook.com/TimByrneAlmostLive

In this special extended 15-minute episode, Canada's most trusted higher ed monitor and futurist, Ken Steele, returns to North America's largest PSE exhibition, the Ontario Universities' Fair. Attracting about 120,000 prospective students and parents each year, the OUF is the second-largest annual event held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. We'll also hear why the OUF seems so important to university presidents and staff. The episode ends with a sneak peek at the other 12 hours of footage, which will be featured in upcoming episodes of Ten with Ken.
