71,627, that's how many mobile phones have been diverted from landfill this year. The Telecommunications Forum has been running their re-mobile scheme since 2014, diverted almost a million phones since then. The nationwide shutdown of 3G is leaving a large number of mobile phones obsolete, so many people are looking to get rid of their phones. TCF Chief Executive Paul Brislen told Andrew Dickens that, 'if they can be reused, we get them recycled.' LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

40th anniversary of Ireland's first mobile phone call marked after decades of investment and digital progress

40 years the first mobile phone call was made in Ireland, a pivotal moment that began one of the most significant technology transformations in the country's history. On December 11, 1985, the then Minister for Communications, Jim Mitchell TD, phoned broadcaster Pat Kenny. The pair had a brief chat about the broadcaster's Best Dressed Man of The Year award. Since that first analogue call, Ireland has become one of Europe's most advanced digital nations, powered by significant industry investment, best-in-class networks and rapidly evolving digital progress. Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan TD - who reenacted the call this week with now broadcasting legend Pat Kenny - said that the evolution of telephony and digital communications had been well embraced by Ireland, with its benefits reaching into almost every corner of the economy and society today: "Given the recessionary environment here in 1985 it was a significant feat for Telecom Éireann to invest into a new telecommunications market, 40 years ago. Within a decade, market competition really grew and now, incredibly, there are five million smartphone users in Ireland. "If we add that to the parallel revolution in broadband - including the State's successful National Broadband Plan rollout - and major investment by the providers themselves, networks and connectivity are really high quality, which enables more innovation and job creation." Four Decades of Progress Telecom Eireann entered the world of mobile telephony in 1984 after receiving a licence from the Department of Communications. Eircell was launched in 1985, and the first mobile call took place on its network. In the years that followed, Ireland moved through major mobile milestones: 1985: Eircell was launched in greater Dublin area only and network had capacity for only 1,000 customers 1987: Expansion of network to Cork and Limerick 1990: Eircell had 11,300 customers approx. with high cost (device, quarterly rental charge, high cost per minute calls, set up and connection fee) 1993: First digital GSM network launches, introducing SMS and SIM cards 1996-1997: Market competition accelerates mobile adoption 2000: Vodafone enters the market and buys Eircell, enabling new technologies and innovative concepts to grow 2001: 3G spectrum licences issued 2008: iPhone launches in Ireland, ushering in the smartphone era 2025: There are three primary Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) that own and operate the network infrastructure in Ireland including Three, Eir Mobile and Vodafone. In addition, there are virtual MNOs including Virgin Mobile, Tesco Mobile, An Post Mobile, Sky Mobile, GoMo, Lycamobile, Sky Mobile, Clear Mobile and 48. Telecommunications Industry Ireland (TII) are the Ibec representative body for the sector, that also includes cable and fixed, tower companies, network providers and equipment manufacturers. TII Director Nicola Cooke said a recent economic and social impact study completed by Ibec showed just how dynamic the sector is: "There has been €5bn in network capital investment by the industry over the last eight years, in addition to €2.7bn in annual spend with suppliers in Ireland. The telecoms sector - which provides direct employment to 24,000 people in Ireland - is also a huge enabler of the economy and wider society, bring connectivity across the whole country. "Telecoms is one of the few services where consumer prices are now lower that they were 10 years ago, and that is down to major competition in the market, with a huge range of choice and dozens of packages on offer. The fact that around 99% of the population can avail of 4G and 5G is also testament to the commitment and financing, provided by our members. "Ireland has come a long, long way since that first call 40 years ago, and we are now among the most progressive countries in terms of our digital transformation, sitting in fifth place among 27 countries on the EU digital index." We're constantly looking for ways to spot early signs of problems such as depression or bipolar disorder, based on the idea that the earlier we can spot signs the earlier we can intervene. Traditionally in psychology this has relied on asking people to monitor themselves and report back. Lots of problems inherent in this e.g., lack of motivation, lack of awareness, not knowing what to look for, self-fulfilling prophecies, etc. Psychology research is often hampered by lack of more objective ways of collecting information that don't rely so much on self-report of individuals. New methods are emerging which look at how someone's pattern of typing on a smartphone keyboard might predict early onset of depression. Firstly – rest assured this isn't some new and frightening emergence of big-brother watching your keystrokes! For this research people had to download a specific keyboard to use with their phone that feeds back results to researchers about their typing patterns, it didn't capture the content of what they were writing. This is referred to as passive-sensing as doesn't require any extra effort from people, just for them to keep using their phone as usual. A number of interesting findings about depression: When depressed, people have lower accuracy in spelling and more variability in typing speed – possibly reflects slow-down in their thinking. They also tend to have more times using their phone than when not depressed – might indicate loneliness and social withdrawal. When people are depressed, they have much higher rates of using the backspace key than when not depressed – suggests they're making more errors which could be due to slowing down of thinking or lots of ruminating about life and going round and round in their heads. For people with bipolar disorder, they're more likely to have high rates of backspace use when also having increased levels of activity and decreased levels of sleep – both of which are warning signs of a possible manic episode. Other interesting research using technology: Smartphone apps monitoring daily patterns of behaviour reduced reoccurrence of periods of depression. This was done by tracking when people slowed down in their levels of daily activity and had less periods of being outside in daylight. The app would alert them to this change, and suggesting that if the pattern continued, they could get depressed again – this led people to get more outside activity. Some interesting possible implications: Could be really helpful in noticing early warning signs of things like depression in a really unobtrusive way. Imagine linking this data in with AI who could send you info about early warning signs and what to do about them, plus link you in with a psychologist if needed. Potentially gives people the ability to monitor themselves and make small changes in their behaviour to prevent getting depressed and without having to see a psychologist. Nice to have some good news about potential benefits of technology and given we usually focus on how these things can suck us down into the dark underbelly of the internet! Here's an episode all about data—mobile phone data, to be exact. What are we talking about when we talk about using “mobile phone data” in our research? How are these data generated? Who produces them? What is this data good for…and maybe not so good for? How is it accessed and used? So many questions! To help provide some answers, in this episode Rachel, Levi, and Dani are joined by special guest, Wenfei Xu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at UC Santa Barbara.

Brazil Declared War on Phone Theft — Should the UK Do the Same? The UK's battle against mobile phone theft is being hindered by a standoff between law enforcement and major handset manufacturers. Police want to use IMEI blocking to quickly disable stolen devices, but Apple and Google disagree on the approach. The deadlock raises questions about privacy, data access, and the most effective way to render stolen phones useless.  While the UK remains stuck in debate, Brazil's major players - from telecoms to government agencies - are working together to tackle phone theft head-on. Sao Paulo-based tech company Qintess has developed a multi-layered system: detecting cloned devices through call pattern analysis, a secure app that lets users remotely lock stolen phones, and a restricted IMEI list that instantly renders devices unusable. The result is a coordinated, nationwide shield against phone crime.   The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell and the studio expert Ania Lichtarowicz   More on this week's stories: Safe Cell Phone App Qintess Apple and Google clash with Police over mobile phone theft Production Manager: Liz Tuohy Editor: Ania Lichtarowicz For the PodExtra version of the show please subscribe via this link: https://somewhere-on-earth-the-global-tech-podcast-the-podextra-edition.pod.fan/ Follow us on the socials: Join our Facebook group Instagram BlueSky   If you like Somewhere on Earth, please rate and review it on Apple Podcasts or Spotify   Contact us by email: hello@somewhereonearth.co Send us a voice note: via WhatsApp: +44 7486 329 484   Find a Story + Make it News = Change the World Learn more about your ad choices. What do you think of this episode? Do you have any topics you'd like me to cover? The latest narrative around online safety, phones and devices, is pushing for bans to keep our kids safer and happier. The idea is to give them back their childhood and prevent them from accessing harmful content.  Catherine Knibbs, a child psychotherapist and cyber trauma expert argues in her latest book that social media bans won't work because we can't even properly define what it is we want to ban, and when we do ban devices we actually leave our kids vulnerable. The thinking is that when we tell our child they can't, we miss out on the opportunity to guide them through what Catherine Knibbs describes as the 'digital city park.' In Tech Smart Parenting, Catherine gives an alternative to the panic and prohibition many parents feel about technology. Instead, she talks about the stages of allowing our kids access to that park, and how a staged approach that is managed by us parents, will offer the safest route. There are four core risks she's identified that our kids face and that need to be discusssed.Content - what people can accessContact - who they can be put in contact withConsumerism - selling to young and vulnerable mindsConduct - the way they behave in a digital environmentIn this interview she explains how we can have open, non-judgmental conversations about technology, gives us strategies for setting boundaries without creating shame, supporting neurodivergent children in digital environments and the importance of sitting side by side with our children and learning with them. The acronym she uses to remind us of our role in this journey is CPR:We need to beConsistent in our rulesPersistent in their applicationResistent to the begging of our kidsPersonally, I worry that many parents don't have much of an idea of what their kids are being exposed to online and that there needs to be a strong culture of support and education around what their kids might see. I'd be a fan of a 'driving licence' approach, which is why I've created this checklist of things to consider, and will produce a booklet of discussion questions to help us parents understand what needs to be covered when we give our kids a phone. CHECKLIST OF THINGS TO DISCUSS: Further details coming on my websiteHow much time and when they are online - Ep. 96Showing up as our best selves online - Ep. 43Family values - Ep. 93 & Ep. 135Downloading apps and what needs to be discussed before they do - Ep. 50Commercialism: how we are being targeted and why it's an issue - Ep. 130Grooming: spotting the signs - Ep. 67Sexting - Ep. 4Porn - Ep. 13 & 64What to do if things go wrong - Ep. 4Support the showThank you so much for your support. Justin and Kylie dive into startling new data showing the positive effects of mobile phone bans in Australian schools. They explore statistics that reveal significant improvements in student learning, behaviour, and classroom engagement and reflect on the broader implications for parenting and screen time at home. KEY POINTS: The mobile phone ban in schools has led to 87% of students being less distracted 81% reporting improved learning 63% drop in critical incidents involving social media 54% reduction in behavioural issues Government intervention in screen and phone use is proving effective. Removing screens from classrooms and delaying smartphone access at home are strongly recommended. Analogue tools outperform digital ones in fostering better learning outcomes. Data from vaping bans also support the case for limiting access to harmful digital content. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:“Kids don't need smartphones. They need smart parents, and smart parents give their kids dumb phones.” – Dr. Justin Coulson KEY INSIGHTS FOR PARENTS: Delaying your child's access to smartphones helps them focus, learn, and behave better. School phone bans are effective, but more impact can be made at home and in broader digital habits. Parents shouldn't rely on children to self-regulate in an adult digital world—protection and guidance are necessary. Government restrictions, while imperfect, are valuable in safeguarding children. RESOURCES: Unplug Childhood [Join the village!] Kids Need Smart Parents, Not Smart Phones [Article] ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Delay giving children smartphones as long as possible—opt for dumb phones with basic functionality. Set boundaries around screen use at home, especially for social media and unsupervised access. Support analogue learning tools at home and advocate for them in schools. Stay informed about government policies that affect your child’s digital environment. Have open conversations with your child about the purpose and risks of digital devices.
