Christine Fallert Kessides became a first-time novelist at age 70, when her young adult book, Magda, Standing, was published and received significant acclaim. Christine was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was interested in the fact that all her ancestors (those she could identify) were from Germany. After reviewing her family genealogy and reflecting on some of her relatives' experiences, she was inspired to write Magda's story. About the novel Magda, Standing: When her father pulls her out of high school to care for her invalid mother and little brother, sixteen-year-old Magda is devastated—but the greater challenge is saving her family in the face of a war and pandemic. Magda, Standing -- a YA (Young Adult) historical novel released June 2023 from Bold Story Press -- concerns a girl in a German immigrant family in Pittsburgh in 1916-19, confronting the impacts on her family of World War One and the Spanish flu. The novel speaks to many themes that young people confront today: Balancing the demands of family and tradition with their own ambitions; seeking education despite financial obstacles; dealing with mental illness in a family member; feeling public resentment of immigrants; facing first-time independence from home; and confronting violence and death. Awards include: Gold medalist - 2024 Ben Franklin Award from Independent Book Publishers Association, IBPA - for Young Adult Audiobook Silver medalist - 2023 Story Circle Sarton's Book Award - Young Adult category Bronze medalist - 2023 MOONBEAM Children's Book Award - Young Adult Fiction: Historical/Cultural Finalist for the 2023 international Eyelands Book Award for published Historical Fiction/Memoir In this episode, we discuss themes in her book that touch on immigration to the U.S., the effect of pandemics and how the devastation of the Spanish Flu outsized the Covid-19 pandemic in fatalities, the critical importance of nurses, World War I, family and the challenges attendant to coming of age. Takeaways from Magda, Standing, include driving hard to pursue one's dreams and how we can survive almost anything with support, particularly from family. Christine attended college and graduate school at Northwestern University and Princeton University, respectively. She had a career writing policy reports for the World Bank on international development. In her spare time, she volunteers with nonprofits that support women and families and especially enjoys reading, travel, yoga and sharing books with friends. She lives outside Washington DC, in suburban Maryland with her husband, and sees their four children, two grandchildren, and four grand-dogs as often as possible. Christine currently is writing the sequel to Magda, Standing, as well as working on a children's picture book. She spoke about Magda, Standng at the historic Chautauqua Institution (live and on Zoom) in August. Season 2- Episode 50 On this episode, teacher, Ruth, shares the importance of making learning fun, the need to be able to effectively communicate an idea, her catalog of books, the long-term effects of social media, the value in trusting your kids, some of the life skills we should focus on building up in our kids, and ensuring that kids put more focus on the solution than the problem. http://www.artbyruth.com/ Award-winning artist and author Ruth A. Douthitt has been drawing and writing since an early age. An Arizona native, she first was inspired by her fourth grade teacher to learn more about the fine arts and to make it her life's endeavor. Later, her high school English teacher entered her poetry into a contest that she won. Her art teacher gave her many challenging class assignments that helped her win two scholarships to study art in college. She has had a one-woman show in New Bern, North Carolina where she and her husband were stationed with the USMC. It was there that Ruth developed a love of wildlife art and drawing animals. She did "pet portraits" while working at Ballantyne Framing & Art. She also was able to sell her watercolors there as well. Back in Arizona, she began painting portraits of children. First she started painting friend's kids and pets, but that grew into a business. Her commissions increased thanks to positive "word of mouth" reviews from clients. Her clients range from Police officers, lawyers, and Superior court Judges to stay-at-home moms and grandmothers: all wanting realistic portraits of their beloved children or grandchildren. It was around this time that Ruth drafted a story she had in mind ever since her time in North Carolina...a story about dragons. She completed her B.A. in Visual Arts from ASU and a Masters degree in Education from University of Phoenix. Ruth has taught art at Glendale Community College and is a member of the Arizona Watercolor Association. She finally had her first book published in 2011, "The Dragon Forest." Since then, she has had several more books released, including the 2017 Moonbeam Children's Book Award Bronze Medal award-winning "The Children" series. As an award-winning author of books for middle grade readers, Ruth decided to blend her art and her writing. She has illustrated many books: "The White Wolf," "Dragon Games," "Dragon Riders," and "The Road to Home." In 2023, she released her first coloring book! She plans on releasing many more...And, finally after 34 years in the making, she released her first picture book, "Peter and the Dragon Forest," with illustrations by her husband. Today, Vanessa and I have fun talking about her writing process and her debut YA fantasy trilogy called the Heartmaker trilogy. At the end of the video, she shows everyone all three books, including Heartrender, which launched on October 5, 2022. Grab some refreshments and come hang out with us, while we talk about Jesus, writing, and our love of fantasy. V. Romas Burton grew up bouncing up and down the East Coast where she wrote her first story about magical ponies at age seven. Years later, after studying government and earning an M.A. in Theological Studies, V. Romas Burton realized something even bigger was calling out to her--stories that contained great adventures and encouraging messages. Her debut novel, Heartmender, has won several awards including: First Place in Young Adult for the 2020 Next Generation Indie Book Awards, Second Place in Juvenile/ Young Adult for the 2021 Illumination Book Awards and tied for Third Place for Young Adult Fiction- Fantasy/ Sci- Fi in the 2020 Moonbeam Children's Awards. You can find future updates and news on her website: www.vromasburton.com The Third book in the Heartmaker trilogy is entitled Heartrender. Eman is gone. Silas is gone. Claire is gone. When Addie returns to Ramni after her devastating encounter with Ophidian, she finds her heart broken from her recent losses. Yet, even though she is grieving, Addie continues her journey through the Twelve Lands of Decim to unite the Twelve Magisters. With the aid of Romen and Lyle, she travels to each Northern Land to find that Ophidian is no longer harvesting Decim's hearts, but their souls. With this new power, Ophidian will be all but impossible to defeat. Will Addie be able to complete her promise to Eman before darkness rules? A sweeping bookend to a remarkable allegorical trilogy, Heartrender will have you believing that, someday, in the not-too-distant future, it will be time for the reign of darkness to end. Everyone knows I love a good mystery, so when I discovered that Antony Barone Kolenc had written a youth adventure and mystery series, the Harwood Mysteries, I knew I had to learn more about them. In this episode, we chat about his inspiration for the 12th-century series, the themes of the books, and the many (MANY) awards they've won! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What Happens When You Mix Fascinating History & Mystery? Great Books! When I discovered that Antony Barone Kolenc wrote mysteries and what they were about, I knew this would be a great episode. Antony writes about 12th century England in what he calls "Harry Potter meets Brother Cadfael" but without the magic. There are supernatural-feeling elements that he describes as Scooby Do-esque. All the appearance of the inexplicable... right up until the story explains them. Full of history, adventure, friendship, and faith, the Harwood Mysteries have everything I love about mystery. No, I haven't read them yet, but thanks to a generous publisher in Loyola, I have an entire set sitting here just taunting me to put them next on my reading list. The first book is also sitting on my Audible account, just waiting for me to listen. The narrator... wonderful so far. It opens with a bang, and I love the writing style. Oh, and speaking of audio... it's that time when families start taking long car trips. What a great way to pass the time, listening to a good mystery. So far, Antony has three books available, but the fourth is coming out soon! I'm so excited about this because he says he has as many as nine in his head. NINE! SQUEE! Something about the series reminds me of my Wynnewood series. CAVEAT: I have not read these books yet, but I have listened to some of the audio. The opening of the book describes a bandit raid which includes fire, a mace-wielding bandit and his victim, etc. I wouldn't play this for younger children without listening first to be certain it fits your family's comfort levels. Antony Barone Kolenc also has a podcast! For families looking for uplifting content, Antony does some of the legwork for you on Shepherd's Pie. As the website says, "The Shepherd's Pie is an uplifting, ecumenical show that airs weekly on radio and podcast channels. With engaging conversations and fun entertainment reviews, we offer positive insights and media resources for families and youth leaders, while we discuss issues that impact young people at home, in school, and in the world today." Shadow in the Dark by Antony Barone Kolenc An attack by bandits in the middle of the night leaves a young boy with no memory of who he is or where he is from. Nursed back to health by the devoted monks in a Benedictine abbey, he takes the name Alexander, or Xan for short. Aided by the kindly Brother Andrew, Xan commits himself to finding out who he really is. Does he have a family? Are they still alive? And who--or what--is the shadowy figure creeping around the abbey in the dead of night? Celebrate Moon Day with Award-Winning Illustrated Childrens Book (GRAND RAPIDS) Storytellers for centuries have told exciting and imaginative stories of the moon from ancient tales to space exploration and aliens attacking from the unknown, which is why people landing on the moon for the first time was such a monumental moment for all of mankind. Moon day is celebrated every year on July 20 to commemorate this exciting event. For many cultures the stars, moon and planets play an important role in their day-to-day lives. Thousands of Native American stories have been written about the moon, including many that cover relevant topics that exist today like bullying. Nearly 75 percent of U.S. students will eventually fall victim to bullying done by acquaintances, classmates, or even kids from across the country, but no matter where they are from they can seriously damage the victims self-confidence. An award-winning illustrated childrens storybook by Janet Heller, How the Moon Regained Her Shape (Sylvan Dell Publishing), is a tool that allows parents and educators to discuss bullying with children. Influenced by Native American legends, Hellers story portrays a full moon who shrinks due to bullying. Through the book, bullied children learn how to rebuild their self-esteem. How the Moon Regained Its Shape is a favorite in the childrens fiction category, having recently won a Childrens Choices award for 2007 as well as the 2007 Benjamin Franklin Award in the category of Interior Design--Children's/Young Adult. Most recently, the book won a Gold Medal in the Moonbeam Children's Book Award competition for a Picture Book for 4- to 8-Year-Old Children. Janet Heller was born and raised in Milwaukee and currently teaches for the English and Womens Studies Departments at Western Michigan University. Heller has a Ph.D. in English Language and Literature from the University of Chicago. Many media outlets have published Hellers works that include 2 books, 38 literary articles, 150 poems and numerous reviews. She is a member of the Society of Childrens Book Writers and Illustrators and is President of the Michigan College English Association. How the Moon Regained Her Shape also won a Book Sense Pick in 2006.
