Welcome back to Part 34 of our series with Dr. John G. Turner! Today we are covering most of Chapter 27 in John Turner's new book Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet. The chapter is called “Deep Water” and covers the year 1843.The main topic for today is polygamy.Join us as we discuss several of Joseph Smith's wives such as Flora Woodworth, Eliza R. Snow, Sarah Ann Whitney, Lucy Walker, etc. John Dehlin challenges Dr. John Turner on specific aspects such as whether Emma Smith really did push Eliza R. Snow down the stairs and whether or not Porter Rockwell did actually attempt to assassinate Lilburn Boggs. We also discuss the validity of the William Clayton journals and postulate on why the church has yet to publish them.Throughout 1843, Joseph Smith promised men and women salvation based on their willingness to enter into polygamy. He spent church funds on gifts for his wives, as well as buying some of them plots of land, and even travel expenses for some of the women (from England to Nauvoo). Joseph Smith used language that could be seen as coercive, for example, telling Lucy Walker that polygamy was a command of God and that he would give her “until tomorrow to decide this matter [of polygamy] and that “If you reject this message the gate will be closed forever against you.”In this episode we tackle hard questions such as: Can people who do bad things also be good? Does good behavior negate seemingly abusive actions? Are people all bad and all good? Can Joseph Smith's actions be seen as human trafficking? This chapter in Mormonism is deeply problematic and disturbing, but Dr. John Turner handles it amazingly.Let us know your thoughts on a Brigham Young series (comprising ten episodes) covering John Turner's book Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet. If you'd like to help keep this project going, please consider donating to support this series here. In this episode of Mormonism Live, we sit down with Ember, a Native American and former Latter-day Saint, to explore a side of Mormonism that often goes overlooked – the lived experience of Native Americans inside the Church. Yeah. How mature of you. Thanks. Well, I mean, I think it helped that I had just come off of, like, the whole swinging scandal and all of that. So you realize that all of that isn't really like what it's cracked up to be and like, what's worth it and what's not. And so I think I was very much like, jaded by the online scrutiny and all of that, that I'm like, I don't know that sacrificing my peace, you know, when I would just fought for my life for a few years and like, I don't know that I'm ready to subject myself to that again.(08:38) - Season three especially showed like real fractures, particularly between Letitia and Kate... But did you and Layla feel like pulled into that? Oh for sure, but there is a there's also so many other like components to that whole situation that it wasn't even necessarily just like, you know, the, the Kate in Latvia of it all… And so I think in order to really protect, like my co-parent relationship and like my own piece, I think like her relationship with Chase, like got to a point where I like, needed to like just set a strict boundary and just be like like, I don't want to hear about either one of you from either one of you, like, figure your stuff out. But like, I'm, I like it's too much for me because it was just hard because I would hear things from Kate, and then I would ask Chase about it and he's like, no, that's not at all what happened. (20:20) - I want to know if we're going to see more of your romantic life, like, is there anything you can tease in that area? Are you dating anyone? Do we get to see it? I'm not dating anyone… Yeah, I think I think that's exactly where I'm like, I feel for sure like the most authentic version of myself that I've been. And so I'm like, I and I feel at peace with like being single right now. So I'm like, I'm open to love, but I'm not really like, I don't really care enough. Right now to go, like out of my way to search for it.(24:24) - And then the swinging storyline, like obviously changed everything. Like, I don't want you to feel like I'm saying this for you to say yes. I'm curious, though, if you regret that chapter or if you're like, that's just how life goes and that's how it had to happen…(29:24) - There must've been like a tiny feeling of betrayal for? I mean, I'm asking you, I guess, were you already emotionally detached? To me, like it had nothing to do with the, like. Any feelings for Chase? Like, I was, like, so far beyond that at this point… Like, y'all can do, like what you want, but I'm, I like, I'm not giving you access to that headspace anymore. Yeah. And that's really what it was about.(30:57) - I want to know how Chase would feel if you were ever to become a Bachelorette. Because now we know we can have a crossover world of Mormon wives and Bachelorette. So. And I think fans are obsessed with the idea of you being the Bachelorette. So would what would he feel and would you ever consider it?... I don't know, I would be open to it for sure. I think it would be very like like I said, I don't have a ton of dating experience, so it would for sure be an intimidating experience for me, but I'd be open to it for sure.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In his official 1838 history, Joseph Smith described discovering the golden plates inside a carefully constructed stone box in the Hill Cumorah. According to his account, the box contained the plates, the Urim and Thummim, and a breastplate. But what happened to that stone box?In this episode of LDS Discussions, we take a deep dive into the historical record surrounding the stone box narrative. We compare Joseph Smith's 1838 history with earlier and later accounts, statements from witnesses like David Whitmer, Martin Harris, and Oliver Cowdery, and later retellings from leaders such as Brigham Young. We explore:-What Joseph Smith said was inside the box-Whether early Saints believed there was MORE than one box-Claims about swords, the Liahona, and other Nephite artifacts-The evolution of the story over time-Whether codex-style plates create anachronistic problems-The “magic worldview” shared by early Mormon leaders-Comparisons to treasure-digging culture-Why there is no physical evidence of the stone box todayWe also examine 19th century newspaper references discussing the stone box, Whitmer's later (contradictory) interviews, and the strange disappearance of a stone structure that supposedly survived for over a thousand years. If the box was real and physically constructed with stone slabs and pillars –as described –why did it leave no trace? Why didn't believers preserve fragments the way people took pieces of the Berlin Wall? And why does the Hill Cumorah today appear completely undisturbed? This episode wrestles with a central question: Does the detail of a stone box strengthen Joseph Smith's credibility –or create new historical and epistemological problems? This is Episode 71 in our LDS Discussions series!___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. In this SLOMW Season 4 recap, I'm breaking down the DadTok attempted takeover (and what it says about Mormon male culture), that wild “honor your mother” moment between Liann and Taylor Frankie Paul, what Mayci's husband said about the priesthood, and the moment Harry Jowsey thought polygamy was a person. So I feel like it's kind of for reality tv, cuz I'm like okay whatever.(7:37) - Does it ever feel limiting to be perceived as the emotionally mature one? Do you feel like you've always gotta be that? I do. I think last season probably because when it did come out I had just given birth. And so when I think sometimes seeing the criticism online being like, “oh she used to be my favorite but like, she's actually just a mean girl”, I'm like okay. Certain things like that… you try filming 12-hour days while this pregnant.(8:44) - In season four we see - there's always so many dynamics of course - but you wrote a book and it was very important to you. And some people showed up, and some people didn't. Do you see more context and perspective now that you've watched back Whitney missing your book launch? Oh yea. And I can't remember how that was edited.. I wasn't upset at all. I don't know if it was perceived that way, but I wasn't upset at all in that moment, because Whitney called me crying the night before…(10:08) - Do you feel like it healed some wounds for you? I think for sure. I think - yea writing it over time, it was definitely difficult. Because when I was writing it we were filming too… sharing this story to help others is why I wrote this to begin with.(11:11) - I was in an abusive relationship, and then I went from that abusive relationship to another one where I got pregnant, and then my son's father passed away when I was pregnant. And so going through the grief but also recovering from an abusive relationship… (40:08) - There's a lot of coming of age stories, like I'm talking about making out with my boyfriend for the first time and what's going on with my body and things that aren't typically talked about. I think I shared it because yea it's funny, it's silly, but it's also because growing up in a very conservative, religious household, it wasn't talked about. Like I thought I was like dying or something. I was like what's wrong with me? Am I gonna to die? Recently published historical documents have confirmed that this group existed and operated as a kind of paramilitary society within early Mormonism, using secret oaths and intimidation to silence dissenters—even other Mormons. We also examine how religious movements can drift when loyalty to leaders begins to outweigh commitment to truth and biblical principles. Looking at passages like 2 Corinthians 10:3–4 and John 18:36, the episode contrasts the violent methods used by the Danites with the way of Jesus, whose kingdom advances not through force but through truth, humility, and sacrificial love.Ultimately, this conversation reminds us that God's kingdom doesn't need secrecy, intimidation, or violence to advance. Jesus didn't ask for secret oaths or blind allegiance—He gave His life so that people could be free and walk in the light of truth.

Heretic (Beck and Woods 2024) Heretic – Does the film present an intellectual and philosophical discussion of belief, faith, and religion in order to encourage that amongst viewers? Or does it present all that as distraction because ultimately regardless of your thoughts and feelings, Mormon Jesus is going to save you if you believe and pray thereby making the film basically one long propaganda piece for the Mormon church (cult)? Laura and I disagree but we do hope you enjoy our consideration of this fundamental question about the film. I Saw the TV Glow (Schoenbrun 2024) I Saw the TV Glow – Heralded as a unique and powerful entry into the horror genre in 2024, this film is undoubtedly gorgeous and experfly crafted. Is it so expertly crafted that the alienation Marshall experienced viewing the film as a cis man meant to give him a taste of the experience of the alienation from self of being closeted in terms of gender identity or sexuality? Thus offer an opportunity for experiential empathy for those who are cis or are situated bodies that match their sense of self. If so what an accomplishment! The film has undoubtedly been hugely impactful and meaningful for LGBTQ+ viewers and that is what matters much more than our opinions. We totally appreciate the film but unfortunately we ultimately just didn't really get it. There is lots more of our podcast! Please listen, review, subscribe, and tell your friends. In the mid-1800s, long before the Soviet Union or Maoist China, a French political dreamer named Étienne Cabet tried to build a communist utopia... in the heart of America. What followed was a bizarre, ambitious, and often comically disastrous experiment involving disease, deception, authoritarian hypocrisy, failed frontier settlements, buying an abandoned Mormon town, and one of the strangest forgotten social movements in U.S. history.
