Over several decades, the LDS Church produced a series of books each year from their first 16 presidents. These were leather-bound and had gilded pages. They were given to church employees with a card explaining they were given by the First Presidency. We think this is about as "official" as it gets. Today MRM's Bill McKeever and Eric Johnson look at the book written by 14th President Howard W. Hunter.

Mormons are certain that God has spoken through a revelation called the Book of Mormon. But God has not spoken through the Qur'an, nor the Book of Mormon. Buy the Book Wakara’s America: A Historical Perspective Max discussed his new book, “Wakara’s America,” which explores the life and significance of Wakara, a prominent Ute leader in the 1840s. He explained that Wakara was known by different names in various regions, reflecting his extensive travels and interactions with diverse communities. Max, a historian of American religion at the University of Nebraska, shared his fascination with Latter-day Saint history and culture, which led him to research Wakara’s role in the American West and his interactions with early Mormons. He highlighted the need to tell Wakara’s story from his perspective, offering a more nuanced understanding of their complex relationship. Wakara: The Forgotten West’s Thief Max discussed Wakara, a Native American figure from the 1840s who was known as the greatest horse thief of the American West. He enslaved thousands of Paiutes and used his knowledge of the West to create maps that were later used by John C. Fremont and the Latter-day Saints. Max highlighted the importance of Wakara’s contributions to the American West, despite his being largely unknown due to his Native American heritage. Richie expressed surprise at learning about Wakara’s actions and the historical context, emphasizing the need to acknowledge and understand such figures’ roles in shaping history. Understanding Historical Narratives Complexity Max and Richie discussed the complexity of historical narratives, emphasizing the importance of a more nuanced understanding of historical figures and events. Max highlighted the need to recognize the implications of one’s own family history and suggested that acknowledging past actions can lead to better future decisions. They agreed to continue their discussion about the interactions between the Latter-day Saints and Native Americans in the Great Basin and Salt Lake Valley in the next segment. Richie also reminded listeners to contact the Cultural Hall with feedback or suggestions for future guests and discussions. Brigham Young’s Utah Journey Myths Max and Richie discussed the complexities of human beings and the challenges of categorizing individuals as purely good or bad. They explored the origins of the Latter-day Saints’ journey to Utah, focusing on Brigham Young’s Vanguard Company and the mythology surrounding their entry into the Salt Lake Valley. Max explained that while the story of Brigham Young declaring the area to be the “right place” is part of the origin myth, there is no concrete evidence to support this claim. They also discussed Brigham Young’s meeting with Jim Bridger, where Bridger warned about the Utes’ presence in the area, leading to a change in the Mormons’ planned route. Wakara and Brigham Young’s Complex Relationship Max discussed the complex relationship between Wakara, a Native American leader, and Brigham Young, the leader of the Mormons. Wakara helped Brigham settle in the Salt Lake Valley and was invited to the first Pioneer Day celebration in 1849. However, Wakara also used the Mormons to displace his rivals, leading to the extermination of the Timpanogos people in 1850. Max explained that Wakara’s slavery practices were different from the chattel slavery in the American South, as they were more about re-establishing bonds of peoplehood and connection to the land. Despite this, Wakara was baptized a Latter-day Saint in 1850 and led his followers into baptism. Wakara’s Mormon Conversion and Alliances Max discussed Wakara, a Native American leader who was baptized and later ordained as a Mormon priest, which the Mormons viewed as a conversion. Richie questioned whether Wakara’s involvement with the Mormons was a strategic move for power or a genuine conversion. Max explained that Wakara’s adoption of Mormonism was more about forming kinship networks and alliances rather than a complete conversion, and he placed his daughters in Mormon households to strengthen these bonds. Max also highlighted that Wakara’s descendants, including some who may not be aware of their Native American heritage, have been identified through DNA and genealogical research. Brigham Young’s Native American Policies Max discussed the historical relationship between Brigham Young and Wakara, a Native American leader who was among the first Native American priesthood holders in Utah in 1851. He explained how Wacara, despite being illiterate, was given a traveling paper by George A. Smith to trade with Mormon settlers, though this was part of a broader context of Native American slavery and indentured servitude in early Utah. Max argued that Brigham Young’s policies led to conflicts with Native Americans, which he referred to as “Brigham’s War,” rather than the traditionally named “Walker War,” and traced Brigham’s ancestry back to participants in the King Philip’s War, highlighting a pattern of settlers taking Native American land and controlling the narrative of their conflicts. Understanding the Walker War Narrative Max discussed the historical narrative surrounding the Walker War, emphasizing how conflicts are often named after Native Americans despite being initiated by settlers. He highlighted Brigham Young’s role in naming the war and the subsequent peace parlay with Walker, which ended with Walker’s death under mysterious circumstances. Max also touched on the broader themes of American expansionism, the mistreatment of Native American remains, and the potential for a more sustainable and balanced relationship with the land. He expressed hope for a return to indigenous ways of understanding and interacting with the environment, citing recent developments around the Great Salt Lake. Patrick offers listeners heartfelt advice and practical counsel on real-life issues, from handling marital attraction and temptation at work to supporting those facing mental health difficulties and personal loss. He responds to questions about Catholic practices such as the tabernacle and confirmation names, addresses concerns about modesty at Mass, and helps those exploring or returning to the Catholic faith with compassion and clarity. Through thoughtful conversations, Patrick encourages listeners to seek hope, connection, and integrity in faith and everyday challenges, while bringing gentle humor and lasting encouragement along the way. Email – Been married for 13 years and just found myself attracted to a co-worker. Should I confess this? (00:47) Kathy – A woman behind me was very irritating. Weeks later, I found out that she has severe dementia. I learned not to judge how someone acts in Church. (08:41) Jim - Please explain the sacredness of the tabernacle and what is inside it? (11:28) Vianey - How can I manage mental illness? (15:05) Latasha - My heart goes out to Vianney and I’m praying for her healing. Thank you, Patrick, because you are so compassionate and gentle. (24:10) Sandy - I find myself in Church judging other women for their lack of modesty. Should I go to the priest and tell him it bothers me? Am I being a prude? (25:28) Ben - When I chose a confirmation saint, I wasn't very discerning, and I picked an archangel venerated in Eastern churches. Can I pray to this saint? (30:33) Chandler - I am an ex-Mormon. I’m trying to figure out how to learn about Catholicism. (35:13) Rob – I’m coming back to Catholicism. Do I have to get married again or can I have my marriage blessed? Evil Ervil LeBaron was a killer. He killed not only his brother Joel LeBaron, but had his wives kill rival Rulon Allred. He was known to have a hit list of others, including President Spencer Kimball of the LDS Church. Jacob Vidrine discusses these events and we’ll discuss the recent drug killings to a LeBaron family in Mexico. Though the family's original movement—the Church of the Firstborn—was rooted in unique priesthood claims tracing back to Nauvoo, Ervil's descent into murder and extremism permanently attached a “stigma” to the LeBaron name. Rise of the Violent Theologian Ervil LeBaron was one of the younger sons of Alma Dayer LeBaron (Dayer) and was initially associated with the Mexico branch of the family, led by his brother Joel LeBaron. Ervil was recognized early on as a key figure in establishing Joel's church, serving as a great theologian who authored the important pamphlet Priesthood Expounded. Joel rewarded his loyalty by appointing Ervil to the prestigious position of presiding patriarch over their Mexican church, the number two office under Joel. However, Ervil's rise was quickly marred by corruption. Reports indicated that Ervil began embezzling tithing funds and had a reputation for being predatory, attempting to get all the wives for himself and generally aggrandizing himself through his authority. By 1970, the controversy surrounding Ervil’s financial and moral conduct grew so severe that many members and leaders within Joel's church felt the need to curb his influence. Schism and the Birth of Violence In response to Ervil’s excesses, Joel made the drastic decision to strip Ervil of all authority in the church. Ervil, angered by the loss of his prestige and power, convinced himself that he was justified in killing Joel for taking away his authority. This marked the schism, leading Ervil to form his own group, the Church of the Lamb of God. Ervil’s actions escalated quickly into violence. He claimed a radical, theocratic justification for his subsequent murders: he asserted that he held the civil authority over the earth as “God’s appointed agent”. Based on this claim, Ervil believed he could kill anyone who was “treasonous against his government”. Ervil ordered Dan Jordan, one of his followers, to murder Joel LeBaron, which occurred in 1972. This assassination cut off the head of Joel's organization, as Joel died without appointing a successor to his highest office. Infamous Hit List After murdering his brother, Ervil was determined to eliminate any remaining opposition. He began threatening other fundamentalists and created a massive hit list. He was reportedly concerned about Verlan LeBaron, who had been appointed by Joel to replace Ervil as the presiding patriarch. Verlan was forced to go into hiding for nearly a decade to avoid Ervil’s retribution. To draw Verlan out of hiding, Ervil devised a calculated and shocking plan: he ordered the murder of Rulon Allred, the leader of the Allred Group (AUB). Ervil targeted Allred because Verlan had married into Rulon's family, believing Verlan would attend the funeral. Rulon Allred was assassinated in his doctor’s office in 1977. Ervil allegedly sent two of his wives to commit the crime, securing their commitment to his violent cause. Although Verlan was present at Allred’s funeral, the overwhelming police presence spooked Ervil’s followers, saving Verlan’s life. Ervil LeBaron's End and the Lingering Tragedy Ervil was eventually apprehended in Mexico, extradited, and convicted in 1980 for ordering Allred's death, receiving a life sentence in Utah State Prison. However, the violence did not end there. Ervil died in prison in 1981 in an apparent suicide. Tragically, just two days after Ervil's death was discovered, Verlan LeBaron—the man Ervil had spent years trying to kill—died in an auto accident in Mexico City. Several family members and observers suspected that this was not a coincidence, believing it was a sabotage hit ordered by Ervil's followers, who continued their deadly work even after Ervil's incarceration. Ervil's actions permanently “soil[ed] the whole [LeBaron]” family, transforming a unique movement rooted in secret Nauvoo priesthood claims into one synonymous with a twisted quest for power and serial murder. LeBarón and Langford Families Massacre Tragedy continues in Mexico as recently as 2019. Nine people were killed with some burned alive in a car (three women and six children, all of whom held dual US–Mexican citizenship).[3][4] They were members of the LeBaron and Langford families. A drug cartel is believed to be behind the attack.[5][6] In January 2025, a federal judge in Mexico ordered the Attorney General’s Office to investigate the massacre as an act of terrorism in Mexico. We dig into her docuseries Surviving Mormonism, the tidal wave of stories she's helping bring to light, and the church's (let's call it) “creative” approach to handling abuse reports. Heather opens up about the personal cost of speaking out, the shocking stories that rocked her the most, and how she's rebuilding her relationship with spirituality from the ground up. And because this is our show, we of course veer into bras, garments, guilty pleasures, and whether Heather might be the Leah Remini of Mormonism (spoiler: yes). We laughed, almost cried, plotted a three-way meetup with Leah, and even talked laser hair removal. They explore how religion and culture interweave to shape everything from marriages and gender roles to emotional maturity and family loyalty, and how even reality tv moments can create powerful moments of destigmatization and healing for viewers who have dealt with similar experiences. We are meeting 13 times live in the month of January to give you the best chance of ditching the booze. There are plenty of teachings throughout the month, but the best part of the course is that it's community-based. It's all about building connections over our shared interest of an alcohol-free life.   Costa Rica, February 21st – 28th, 2026. Two spots have opened up for our next Sober Travel Trip. Come join us!   [03:03] Thoughts from Paul:   Happy Thanksgiving to our American listeners!  Paul is wishing everyone a week of peace, calm, turkey, pumpkin and hopefully whipped cream and lots of ice cream.   Paul was going to give us 10 tips to help you stay alcohol-free this week, but if you get this one right, then you should be ok… Somebody – ideally everybody – at your Thanksgiving dinner needs to know that you are not drinking or of your plans to stay sober. We at RE call this burning the ships and AA calls this radical honesty.   Ok, here's a second tip – do your best to be thankful or find things to be thankful for. Thank the universe for your willingness to show up. For your willingness to listen to a podcast about making profound change. This shit ain't easy.   Paul and the rest of us at RE are grateful for you all and for your support over the years. THANK YOU!   [07:59] Paul introduces Emily:   Emily lives in Sacramento, CA with her husband and four children. She is a flower farmer. For fun, she enjoys playing music, spending time outside, talking to animals, reading and taking naps.   Emily only drank a handful of times prior to age 38. She was raised Mormon with a loving family in a small town outside of Yosemite. There was no exposure to alcohol for Emily growing up. She says every time she did drink she felt enormous guilt and shame due to her religion and the pressure to fit the mold of what she was expected to be.   Between the ages of 33 and 37, Emily and her husband started a charter school for the arts in California. It was very successful but was closed down after five years because of politics in the small town. Emily tried to be resilient and keep moving forward, but a series of personal blows to her and her family found them moving two hours away from family in friends because of a job.   Emily began to realize her life in the church wasn't aligned with her personal values. Since they had moved away from family and friends, Emily decided to try "mommy wine culture". She began drinking wine in a coffee mug after the kids went to bed in an effort to be discreet with it and enjoyed how it calmed her down and not think about everything that was going on.   Emily didn't have much knowledge about how alcohol affected people, and her drinking progressed quickly. She decided to check into outpatient rehab in 2021 with the support of her husband. She had six months of sobriety and then thought she could moderate. That idea ended terribly one night in December 2024 when Emily got arrested for domestic violence.   After the incident, Emily and her husband separated and she was only saw the kids every other week. She drank a few times but decided it wasn't worth it anymore. She began therapy to try and uncover why she felt the need to soften the edges of her life.   One of the many things that Emily feels she has gained in recovery is the ability to trust herself again. She and her husband have reconciled and are rebuilding a strong foundation. Emily says that in addition to therapy, she enjoys podcasts, reading quit lit, journaling and Refuge Recovery.   Recovery Elevator It's all about the journey and not so much the destination. Grab a beer and join us tonight as we kick off our FLDS series by going all the way back to the birth of Joseph Smith Jr. We'll talk about his family's mix of homegrown religion and folk magic, the revivals that swept through upstate New York, and how Joseph said he started seeing visions and eventually dug up gold plates that became the Book of Mormon. Then we'll follow him as he organizes the early church, gathers converts in Ohio and Missouri, survives violence and failed banking schemes, and builds Nauvoo into a powerful Mormon city with its own courts, militia, and serious political clout. Finally, we'll get into the early temple rituals and quiet talk of plural marriage starting to go around Nauvoo. https://www.necronomipod.com https://www.patreon.com/necronomipod Sponsored by BetterHelp: https://www.betterhelp.com/necro Learn more about your ad choices.
