JP Miller was part of Mica Miller's first marriage before he became her second husband. He officiated her 2012 wedding to Jeremy Deas after Mica had already spent years inside the Solid Rock Church community in Myrtle Beach. Mica began attending the church as a teenager. She later became a worship leader, and reporting and court records place her working for JP's family. JP was roughly fifteen years older and served as pastor, mentor and employer before their relationship changed and they married in November 2017. The later federal allegations make that earlier power structure impossible to ignore. A grand jury indicted JP in December 2025 on cyberstalking and false-statement charges. Prosecutors allege that between November 2022 and April 27, 2024, he repeatedly contacted Mica, interfered with her finances and daily activities, damaged her tires, posted an intimate image without permission and caused tracking devices to be placed on her vehicle. He has pleaded not guilty and has not been charged in connection with her death. Trial is set for the October 2026 federal term. Former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer examines how investigators separate disturbing relationship history from evidence that can actually support a criminal charge. Sam Rickman played bass in the Solid Rock worship band. After Mica Miller died, he sat in his car at the first Justice for Mica rally, unable to get out. Then he joined the protesters. JP Miller sued him. The jury handed Rickman $3,400 and JP $100. JP abandoned his appeal one week before his own federal arraignment. Rickman did not issue a statement claiming he was never really inside the room. He picked a side and absorbed the cost.Mark Kaufman took a different path. JP's best man, co-owner of a Myrtle Beach piano bar, and recipient of power of attorney over JP's entertainment company shares, Kaufman published a written response after the Netflix documentary Death of a Pastor's Wife reached its global audience. JP, he wrote, "was never part of the core group of friends with whom I regularly spent my time." The wedding tape, the pulpit footage from the morning after Mica's death, and a former pastor's account of Kaufman calling her within minutes of her resignation all point in a different direction than the statement.The spiritual overseer who said in May 2024 he stood behind JP "for the duration" has gone dark since the premiere. A church elder who resigned after Mica died now emphasizes he was "never close friends" with the pastor. The congregation that packed two Sunday services is down to a handful gathering in storefronts and gyms. A separate church in Conway had to tell the public it shares nothing with JP's operation after Netflix viewers confused the two buildings.JP Miller has entered a not-guilty plea to federal charges. The people closest to Mica Miller's marriage were the same people who enabled its alleged dynamics. Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach was JP Miller's platform and Mica Miller's community. Before he ever met Mica, pastor John-Paul Miller's first wife stated in a sworn affidavit that he had confessed a prostitution addiction to his own congregation. That history sets up everything that follows. JP's father, Reginald, built a church empire in the South Carolina Lowcountry that later collapsed under federal felony convictions for forced labor, and two civil lawsuits now allege both father and son used their positions to gain access to minors through their churches and schools. Mica moved to Myrtle Beach at 15 to work at Solid Rock Church, and told police JP had controlled her since she was a child. A federal indictment filed in December 2025 alleges seventeen months of cyberstalking — tracking devices, more than fifty contacts in a single day, interference with her finances and medical care. She filed at least eight police reports. JP still held healthcare power of attorney over her. On April 25, 2024, Mica served him with divorce papers. Forty-eight hours later, she was found dead at a North Carolina state park, ruled a suicide, after telling a friend JP threatened to put a bullet in her head and stage it as her own doing. He was verified in Charleston and has not been charged. The next morning he preached a full sermon before addressing her death, later claiming he tried to raise her from the dead. Four days after that, he was seen at a bar with Suzie Skinner, whom he married thirteen months later. On April 25, 2024, Mica Miller served her husband, Myrtle Beach pastor John-Paul Miller, with divorce papers. Forty-eight hours later she was found dead at a North Carolina state park, in what was ruled a suicide. She had already told a friend that JP threatened to put a bullet in her head and stage it as her own doing. He was verified in Charleston at the time and has never been charged in her death. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott explains why that 48-hour window is the most dangerous point for anyone trying to leave a controlling partner — the moment an abuser's grip is most threatened. The next morning, JP preached a full service to his congregation before saying anything about his wife's death. He later claimed he'd tried to raise her from the dead. Four days after that, he was seen at a bar with congregant Suzie Skinner, whose wheelchair-bound Army veteran husband had drowned in a community pool in September 2021 after confronting JP about an alleged affair. He married Suzie thirteen months later. This pattern reaches back further than most people realize: Mica moved to Myrtle Beach at 15, went to work at Solid Rock Church, and told police JP had controlled her since she was a child. A federal indictment filed in December 2025 alleges seventeen months of cyberstalking, tracking devices, and financial and medical interference. Mica filed at least eight police reports. JP still held healthcare power of attorney over her. Prior to her death, Mica was in the middle of divorce proceedings with her estranged husband, John-Paul Miller, who is a pastor at Solid Rock Church in The Market Common. According to an affidavit released to ABC15, Mica's sister, Sierra Francis applied to be the special administrator of Mica's estate on May 2, less than a week after her passing and four days before the Robeson County Medical Examiner announced her cause of death as suicide. In the affidavit, Sierra claims Mica said she experienced "abuse and violence" from her husband, John-Paul. The court documents state, Mica told her sister that John-Paul was moving assets that were in his name, such as his car, changing the deed to their house to the church and transferring interest in Crocodile Rocks to one of his sons. Crocodile Rocks is a piano bar in Myrtle Beach. According to Horry County's online land records, the land was transferred from John-Paul Miller to Solid Rock Ministries, Inc on December 15, 2023. Netflix's "Death of the Pastor's Wife" gave Mica Miller's closest friends a platform to say publicly what they allege she endured during her marriage to Myrtle Beach pastor John-Paul Miller — and the accusations are staggering.Congregation member Bruna Pabon alleges Mica described relentless daily demands, enforced through sleep deprivation and threats. Friends say JP pressured Mica into taking testosterone that damaged her voice — the gift that made her Solid Rock Church's worship leader. The documentary plays sermon footage where JP preaches that a wife who refuses her husband has committed a sin equal to the worst offenses he can name.Attorney Regina Ward alleges JP forced his own psychiatric prescription on Mica, including putting pills in her food. No prescription for Mica existed in any medical record that surfaced during the investigation, Ward states. Her siblings allege JP had her committed against her will and took possession of her car, phone, and laptop — which they say contained private images later posted online according to the federal indictment.JP Miller has pleaded not guilty to cyberstalking and making false statements. His October 2026 trial has been delayed four times since indictment. He married Suzie Skinner, a church member whose quadriplegic veteran husband died in a pool in 2021. While destination marketing is an important part of the work, he believes the industry is increasingly recognizing the connection between tourism, economic development, destination development, and community stewardship. He shares his excitement about the emerging idea of "tourism-related economic development" and what it means to think intentionally about attracting attractions, assets, investment, and opportunities that strengthen a community.  That broader perspective also changes how Matt thinks about destination competitiveness. In Myrtle Beach, the beach is an extraordinary asset, but he points to the historic communities, cultural experiences, restaurants, waterways, and other distinctive places that surround it. Creating a compelling destination isn't only about promoting the most recognizable attraction. It is about understanding what makes a community unique and finding ways to tell the larger story.  Building Collaboration Without Losing Organizational Identity A significant part of the conversation focuses on the collaborative model developing in Myrtle Beach. Matt explains how having multiple organizations working toward economic and community development can create confusion when their roles aren't clearly defined. Rather than putting one organization "under" another, he believes organizations are more effective when they operate alongside one another, maintaining their individual responsibilities while sharing resources and working toward common goals.  That approach creates opportunities to share services such as finance, human resources, IT, data, and office space while preserving the autonomy of each organization. Matt also emphasizes that collaboration requires more than a new organizational chart. It requires trust and a willingness to set aside egos. He reflects on his experience in Topeka, where organizational leaders ultimately focused less on protecting individual entities and more on asking what was best for the community and its economy. That shift opened the door to deeper collaboration and a more effective way of working together.  Planning for the Community's Future Myrtle Beach's rapid growth makes long-term thinking especially important. Matt describes the challenge of balancing the need to generate visitation today with the responsibility to invest in the destination's product, infrastructure, and quality of life for the future. With significant growth in both tourism and the resident population, the community is increasingly focused on understanding resident sentiment and making sure the people who live there have a voice in shaping what comes next.  That thinking is at the heart of Collaborate 2031, a five-year, community-wide strategy shaped through conversations with residents, focus groups, and stakeholders across the county's 15 communities. Matt explains why the plan is intentionally focused on measurable progress rather than simply creating a long-range vision or using the strategy as a fundraising exercise. Once priorities are established, the goal is to determine which organizations are best positioned to take responsibility and then ensure they have the resources necessary to follow through. I've got a bad feeling about the South Carolina runoff for Darlene Graham. Lindsey Graham's sister led the first round with roughly 32 percent but now faces Representative Ralph Norman. Trump encouraged her to run, endorsed her before she formally entered, campaigned with her in Myrtle Beach, and held a runoff-eve tele-rally. MAGA Inc. spent $827,000 on last-day calls and texts supporting her. Norman is a longtime officeholder with a hardline conservative record who backed Trump but committed the unforgivable sin of endorsing Nikki Haley in 2024.The problem is that Darlene has run an objectively bad campaign, even though the campaign she needed wasn't difficult. Make it all about Lindsey. South Carolina Republicans had already chosen him, and nobody knew him like his sister. She could've presented herself as a caretaker working with his staff to finish the agenda he spent his life building. Every sentence should've begun or ended with “Lindsey told me” or “This is what Lindsey would've wanted.” Erase the Darlene.Instead, she's tried to establish the Darlene show. She's drawn distinctions between Lindsey's foreign-policy focus and her domestic priorities, but if she's going to be anything other than Lindsey's caretaker, voters don't know her. That choice also makes every piece of her own record fair game. Then she delivered one of the biggest gaffes of the midterms when Greta Van Susteren gave her a question about China and she absolutely gagged on it. You've got to know “China bad.” It's a two-word answer. She hasn't done good; she's done bad.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. Dozens of people are going to vote, and the people who show up in elections like this are usually the most energized. The most energized South Carolina Republicans aren't necessarily Lindsey Graham voters. Many of them are the people who hated Lindsey Graham and wanted a more purebred MAGA senator. Darlene has the Graham name, but the name was already controversial within the party. Her hedge is Trump. The question is whether Trump can still get those voters out.Trump's average approval is 39.5 percent, with 57.2 percent disapproving. Stinky, bad, awful. If you're in the low 40s, it's bad. If you're in the high 30s, it's terrible. Darlene says she's focused on domestic policy, the economy, and kitchen-table issues, but Trump's economic numbers are even worse: 35.9 percent approve and 60.9 percent disapprove. That's a 25-point spread. Donald Trump has been the wind beneath her wings, but I don't know what kind of draft that endorsement creates anymore, even in deep-red South Carolina.MAGA Inc. has $404 million on hand but spent only $2.3 million through July before dumping nearly $1 million into this runoff at the last minute. A huge cash advantage works best when you define people early, not when you wait until the final days. The energy and the issues are with Democrats, while two supposed Republican advantages — money and redistricting — don't look like advantages right now. On the morning after Mica Miller's death, her husband John-Paul Miller didn't call a press conference or issue a statement to his congregation. He preached a full Sunday service at Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach. He talked about taking a break. Then, at the very end, he mentioned that his wife was dead. He called it "self-induced." He told the congregation not to talk about it inside the church. Then he walked off the stage.The federal indictment that followed — filed December 2025 — alleges Miller ran a seventeen-month cyberstalking campaign against Mica while serving as her pastor and her husband. Prosecutors describe tracking devices, an intimate photograph distributed without consent, daily harassment exceeding fifty contacts, and interference with her finances and daily life. Mica filed eight police complaints. She went through two divorce filings. Miller held healthcare power of attorney over the woman accusing him of the conduct.Miller's history runs deeper than one marriage. His father Reginald built a church empire in the Lowcountry and lost it to four federal felony convictions involving forced labor of foreign students. Two civil lawsuits filed in 2025 name both father and son and allege both used their churches to target minors. Miller's first wife stated in a divorce affidavit that he'd confessed a prostitution addiction to his own congregation.After Mica died, witnesses saw Miller drinking at a bar with congregant Suzie Skinner four days later. Her previous husband — a paralyzed Army veteran — had drowned after confronting Miller about an affair. Miller married Suzie with armed guards thirteen months after Mica's death. His trial has been delayed to October 2026.
