Sports' Forgotten Heroes
136: Bullet Joe Rogan - MLB

Sports' Forgotten Heroes

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2024 60:54

In 1920, the Negro National League started play and the historic Kansas City Monarchs took the field for the first time. Leading the way was a 5-foot-7 two-way ballplayer who was about to embark on a journey that didn't end until 1938 - Bullet Joe Rogan. What no one knew then was that Rogan was going to put up numbers that ultimately led him into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Rogan is considered by many to be one of the top 5 baseball players of all time. In fact, some say he is the greatest. On the mound, in the Negro National League he was 120-52 with an ERA of 2.65. But, when you combine the barnstorming tours and other leagues that Bullet played in, there is evidence that he won more than 350 games and struck out more than 2,000 batters. And, he did all of this without a windup. He just stood on the mound reared back and fired the ball. But, that's only half the story. Bullet was a star in the batter's box too. He hit cleanup for the Monarchs and for his NNL career, he hit .338 with an OPS of .934, connected for 50 home runs, drove in 419. He was an all-around superstar. But there is so much more to the Bullet Joe Rogan story and joining me on this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes is a very special guest - The President of Negro Leagues Baseball Museum Bob Kendrick. Bob shares some very fascinating stories with us, talks about how spectacular Bullet was and recalls so much more about the Negro Leagues and who Bullet compares to today ... and that might surprise you.

On February 13, 1920, Andrew "Rube" Foster made history by establishing the Negro National League (NNL), marking a pivotal moment in African-American sports. Known as the "Father of Black Baseball," Foster's vision led to the creation of the first professional baseball league exclusively for Black players. The NNL, headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, provided a platform for Black athletes to showcase their talent and passion for the game in an era marked by segregation and discrimination. Under Foster's leadership, the NNL flourished, becoming a beacon of hope and opportunity for Black baseball players across the nation. Despite facing numerous challenges, including financial constraints and racial prejudice, the NNL operated successfully until 1931, leaving a lasting legacy in American sports history. Saralyn lives just outside Oxford and in her free time likes to bake and share the cakes that she's baked! She went to Amman Valley School in Carmarthenshire South Wales and was part of the school choir and chemistry club. She really loved school and got stuck into everything taking an extra-curricular GCSE in Russian during her A-levels! – she got in trouble with her mother for this at the time as she was worried she was taking on too much work. Saralyn then went to study Physics at the University of Bristol which she struggled with and found it was a big jump from school. She then went on to do a masters in Nuclear Science and Technology at Manchester and during that time she did a placement at NNL which took her into their laboratory – this was where she realised her passion for nuclear and enjoyed it a lot more than her university degree. Saralyn then took a role in Orano in nuclear safety as a Safety Assessor. After a couple years of working at Orano, she picked up three hats – one in safety cases, one as an Account Manager, and one in waste management using a process for making decisions. She recently joined Abbott Risk Consulting undertaking HAZIDs and safety assurance for defence as she knew this was a good place to work in Safety and liked the good connection with the YGN. Saralyn is also Vice chair of the YGN which she really loves – some of her best memories over the last 5 years have been at YGN and she has made friendships and relationships for life in being a part of it. Reuben grew up in Hawarth, Yorkshire and then moved to Cumbria before starting secondary school in Millom. Reuben enjoyed taking part in competitive sports when he was younger and particularly enjoyed tennis. He was also heavily involved in the Air Cadets and after four years at the Air Cadets he became the highest ranked cadet in his squadron. Reuben’s goal up until he was sixteen was to be a pilot, however due to his eyesight deteriorating, he went down the Chemistry route instead after being inspired by his enthusiastic chemistry teachers. Reuben went to St Andrew’s in Scotland to study Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry. He really enjoyed his time at university where he worked part time at the betting shop, Ladbrokes and joined the local darts club. After completing his masters degree, Reuben went on to work at British Sugar UK in the laboratory providing direct operational support. During his time at British Sugar UK, Reuben used the time to think about what he really wanted to do with his life and applied for a graduate scheme at Sellafield, where he ended up working in the Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing department as a Technical Specialist.   Reuben then moved on to work for the National Nuclear Laboratory as a Plant Chemist. Within just weeks of starting at NNL, his chemistry responsibilities became split with public engagement research on nuclear topics, so he developed a broad range of experience in both the technical as well as social aspect of nuclear. After working for NNL for five years, Reuben then decided to start a PhD at The University of Tokyo, Japan after deciding he wanted to gain more confidence in his technical ability and reasoning. We continue our dogged pursuit of the history of baseball's Negro Leagues with a stop this week in the suburban Philadelphia borough of Darby, PA - for a look at the famed Hilldale Club with SABR Seymour Medal-winning historian Neil Lanctot ("Fair Dealing and Clean Playing: The Hilldale Club and the Development of Black Professional Baseball").   Established as an amateur boys team in 1910 by a moonlighting civil servant named Ed Bolden, the club incorporated in November 1916, as the Hilldale Baseball & Exhibition Company - and developing into a professional Negro League powerhouse in the 1920s.   Along with Atlantic City's Bacharach Giants, Hilldale played as eastern "associates" of the predominantly midwestern Negro National League in 1920-21 - before becoming charter members of a full-fledged Bolden-founded rival Eastern Colored League in 1923.   Immediately, Hilldale's "Darby Daisies" became the team to beat - winning the ECL's first three league pennants, and earning two trips to the first-ever Colored World Series against the NNL's powerhouse Kansas City Monarchs - barely losing a best-of-nine series in 1924, but dominating in a five games-to-one title in 1925.   Darby lineups were frequently stocked with some of the top players of the era - including six eventual baseball National Baseball Hall of Famers: Oscar Charleston, "The Immortal" Martin Dihigo, "Pop" Lloyd, "Judy" Johnson, "Biz" Mackey, and Louis Santop.   Hilldale also made waning appearances in 1929's one-year American Negro League and 1932's East-West League as the economic strains of the Great Depression ultimately pushed the club into extinction.

Good Seats Still Available

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2020 90:40

The curious story of baseball’s Atlantic City (NJ) Bacharach Giants originates from a unique intersection of racism, tourism, and politics. In 1915, an independent semi-pro “Atlantic City Colored League” was formed to provide an entertainment outlet for the city’s 11,000+ black residents – with the hope being they would attend the games and stay off the boardwalk, a then-booming summer haven for white tourists.   Two black businessmen active in the local Republican political machine asked an existing area team to join the league and promotionally rename itself after politician Harry Bacharach, the once-and-future mayor of Atlantic City.  When the team refused, the duo travelled south and convinced eight members of the Duval Giants, a black amateur team in Jacksonville, Florida, to venture north and create the foundation for a new independent club instead. The “Bacharach Giants” largely dominated whatever opponents came their way during the late 1910s, despite persistent financial wobbliness.  In 1920, the team began a three-year stint as an associate member of Rube Foster’s new Negro National League (NNL) – allowing them to retain official independence, but also to coordinate non-league games with the teams from Foster’s largely Midwest-based circuit.  In 1923, Atlantic City broke from the NNL to help start the rival Eastern Colored League (ECL), where they achieved their greatest success – including winning two league pennants in 1926 and 1927 – though losing both times in subsequent Negro League World Series play to the NNL’s Chicago American Giants. Beset by rancorous squabbles over player contracts, the ECL folded in 1928.  Five of its clubs – including the Bacharach Giants – formed the bulk of a new American Negro League for 1929, only to see both the league and its team from Atlantic City fold by the end of the season.  Author/historian Jim Overmyer (Black Ball and the Boardwalk: The Bacharach Giants of Atlantic City) joins to discuss the history of the club, and some of the legends that emanated from it, including Negro League standouts Dick Lundy, Oliver Marcell, Dick Redding, “Nip” Winters, Chanel White, “Rats” Henderson, Claude Grier, and Luther Farrell – and National Baseball Hall of Famer John Henry "Pop" Lloyd.
