Feeling drained, gaining weight in new places, or dealing with nagging brain fog—but chalking it up to “just midlife”? You might be missing a key piece of the puzzle: Your thyroid. I know this firsthand. Before I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in my 30s, I spent years powering through exhaustion, thinning hair, unexplained weight gain (over 30 pounds!), and mood swings—thinking it was just life catching up with me. But ignoring the signs only made things worse. That's why I'm thrilled to welcome McCall McPherson, founder of Modern Thyroid Clinic and Modern Weight Loss, to this week's podcast. McCall's journey from frustrated thyroid patient to one of today's top hormone experts fuels her innovative, no-stone-unturned approach. She's helped thousands of women heal their thyroids, balance hormones, and reclaim their energy—without guesswork. In this episode, you'll learn how to: Spot the real signs of a thyroid issue your doctor might miss. Advocate for a full thyroid panel beyond standard labs. Balance hormones and metabolism through targeted treatments. Discover how GLP-1 medications reduce inflammation and support long-term health. If you've ever wondered if something deeper is going on or whether your thyroid could be to blame... Tune in now for real answers and expert-backed solutions! IN THIS EPISODE The often-overlooked symptoms of thyroid dysfunction that mimic “just midlife” struggles—like fatigue, brain fog, stubborn weight gain, thinning hair, cold hands and feet, low libido, and mood swings How perimenopause can trigger or worsen thyroid issues. The must-have thyroid labs your doctor probably isn't running. Why “normal” labs might not mean your thyroid is healthy. Surprising ways GLP-1 medications reduce inflammation and reverse Hashimoto's. How to maintain muscle mass, boost energy, and balance hormones—even in midlife. QUOTES "By the time you're hitting perimenopause, you really need to be screening yourself annually in an in-depth manner because most likely you have a thyroid issue." "Both thyroid and perimenopause hormone dysfunction are two things that can very readily be addressed and fixed in so many women. It's not something to just blow off and live with." "When you have low functioning thyroid, you start to lose progesterone and testosterone early on. It's like a seesaw—once progesterone drops, estrogen becomes too heavy, making balance difficult without proper support." "Midsection fat gain during perimenopause isn't just frustrating—it's a direct health risk, linked to higher morbidity, earlier death, and chronic inflammation. It's common but should never be considered normal." – McCall McPherson "It's damaging to tell women to 'eat less and exercise more' when they have underlying hormone or thyroid issues. Many women are doing everything right and still can't lose weight because deeper imbalances are at play." – McCall McPherson RESOURCES MENTIONED Connect with McCall McPherson at modernthyroidclinic.com Learn more about Modern Weight Loss: modernweightloss.com Get 20% off your first purchase of my favorite amazing, cooling PJs with code ENERGIZED when you click here >>> RELATED EPISODES #543: What I Am Doing to Overcome Post Concussion Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue and Low Thyroid Function and a Big Update About the Podcast #442: 5 Big Benefits of The Powerhouse Hormone: T3 and T4 (Thyroid Hormones) #499: All Of Your Thyroid Questions Answered with McCall McPherson Learn more about your ad choices. The thyroid gland is a contentious topic in the medical community. In my practice, I've seen many women with debilitating symptoms dismissed by doctors only interested in checking TSH levels and sending them on their way. Clinicians react from a place of defensiveness, not wanting anyone to question their authority. With the latest research pushing for TSH ranges to be expanded, it seems like the medical field truly under-appreciates the severity of symptoms of hypothyroidism and the massive impact it can have on the quality of life. Today I'm joined by my friend and colleague, McCall McPherson, PA, to discuss the issues many women with thyroid problems experience. She's the creator of Thyroid Nation and an authority on all things thyroid. After suffering from the mismanagement of her hypothyroidism, McCall lives, breathes, and thrives in understanding the nuances of proper thyroid care. In this conversation, we talk about why most medical providers aren't doing enough for thyroid patients, misconceptions about weight loss, everything you need to know about thyroid testing, dietary and supplement recommendations, and more. Despite what you may have been told, none of this is in your head. With the proper guidance, these issues are controllable and fixable. Enjoy the episode! Did you know that thousands of women are struggling with thyroid issues and that many of them don’t even know it? McCall McPherson talks about thyroid health and how important it is that that we become educated about it. When we share this message, we could bring more healing to more women.Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Why the thyroid is so important for our overall hormonal health What the right testing for thyroid health looks like Where medicine is at in terms of lab ranges Some of the limitations of the typical thyroid medication What to look for to see if you have a significant conversion disorder Some of the things that would interrupt the conversion process The difference between hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto’s The essential first steps that we can take to healing Hashimoto’s The connection between adrenal health and thyroid health The foods we must avoid when it comes to optimizing thyroid health What a thyroid-healing diet looks like Key Takeaways: When you think of hypothyroidism, it’s like everything slows down and dries up. You get significant hormone dysregulation and significant metabolic dysregulation. There are barriers that could keep you from being diagnosed with hypothyroidism -- inadequate labs and terrible lab ranges. Most general practitioners, primary care doctors, and even endocrinologists are only checking TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels. But measuring your TSH is just like measuring how hard you’re pushing on the gas pedal of your car. No matter how hard you push, it doesn’t tell you your speed. Measuring your TSH is only telling you how hard the brain is asking the thyroid to work, it’s not telling you about the direct output. In the long term, if we don’t address the health of our thyroid, diabetes and elevated cholesterol are inevitable. If your lab results are outside of the normal range, you want to be sure that you’re connecting with someone who has a prescribing ability. The number one most common inflammatory food among patients with Hashimoto’s is dairy, followed by gluten, eggs, legumes, grains, and nuts. It’s so important to give your body the space to heal and function in a calm sort of atmosphere when you can so that when you can’t, you don’t have to. Action Steps: Get a full round of thyroid labs, download McCall’s thyroid lab guide, and see the lab ranges that you need to be in for you to be optimal. If you discover that you have a thyroid problem, find someone who can help you with it. If you’re suffering from Hashimoto’s, get off of inflammatory foods like dairy and gluten for three months so you can see how good you can feel, and then you can adjust from that point. Take a pre- and post-measurement of your antibodies so you can objectively measure the work that you’re putting in so that you’ll be encouraged to continue after that three-month period. Reduce stress by doing the following: Eat breakfast with protein every day so your adrenal glands aren’t activated, Meditate even 10 minutes a day using something like the Headspace App that basically teaches meditation in its simplest form. Rest when your body tells you to rest. Eat salt when your body is craving salt. Don’t exercise in high-intensity interval training when you’re on an empty stomach or during prolonged periods of time. McCall said: “You can’t assume that your doctor really understands thyroid. You have to kind of assume that most doctors don’t specialize in thyroid... They’re scanning paperwork to see if things are lighting up like a Christmas tree telling them that they’re abnormal.” “In medicine, in general, there’s always a risk versus benefit analysis, and absolutely the conclusion is that green leafy veggies, raw or cooked, the benefits outweigh the risks… Follow a more kind of paleo-based diet long before you take out those vital nutritional components.” Thanks for listening! We have been on a role lately talking about neurological issues and how to go about correcting dysfunction. But not often do we have the opportunity to have a TEDx speaker come on to talk about their approach to integrative psychiatry! McCall McPherson has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to mental health from a physiological and biochemical perspective. She takes the time to actually listen to what her patients need, and uses this type of practice to discover the root cause for the mental health. Granted, she isn't just extremely knowledgeable in the mental health realm, she is also great at discovering thyroid issues, which is why she will be opening her thyroid clinic in the upcoming few weeks. You can listen in as we picked her brain in this episode of Integrative Psychiatry with McCall McPherson!
