EPISODE 156: HAUNTED BEACHES & BATLEFIELDS   Summer’s the perfect time to share ghost stories about battlefields and boardwalks. Author T. Fox Dunham enjoyed a surprise trip to Ocean City, New Jersey. Fox stayed next to the ornate Hotel Flanders, and while his wife napped, Fox slipped over to explore the haunted grand halls and corridors of one of the shore’s oldest hotels. In Episode 117: The Ghost of Emily, Fox told the story of the Flander’s resident ghost: a young woman named Emily. He updates the tale and tells author Phil Thomas about the gorgeous rooms of the Flanders and Emily’s portrait that hangs in the den on the second floor. Then British folksinger David Walton narrates a ghost story about the haunted Baladerry Inn in Gettysburg where guests still see soldiers fighting and one naughty spirit flirts with young women with blond hair. Oh! There’s new clown news, and the show closes with a haunting tale called “The Shell Seller” from Peter L. Holmes. Born in the Manchester in the United Kingdom, Peter now resides in Hội An in Vietnam. All opinions of guests and content do not reflect the opinions of T. Fox Dunham, Phil Thomas or Para-X Radio.   EPISODE 155: BACK FROM THE DEAD Authors T. Fox Dunham and Phil Thomas have risen from the dead—well not really. The show’s just been on pause for a few months. But as we approach Spring 2021, they return with new ghost stories, horror fiction and witty banter. After chatting, they play a ghost story sent in by UK crime author Fraser Massey. Fraser is one of the authors included in Coming Through in Waves, a charity crime anthology based on the music of Pink Floyd. With his effective gritty style, Fraser tells the story of his visit to the grave of British music producer, Joe the Meek. Then, Fox shares some ghost stories from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Guess which president’s spirit has been encountered the most.  And finally, English folksinger David Walton closes the show by narrating Nancy Kilpatrick’s Necromimicos—an eerie fiction set in a Parisian cemetery.   EPISODE 152: THE MORTUARY INTERVIEW To finish off our Halloween 2020 celebration, horror author T. Fox Dunham interviewed writer and director Ryan Spindell, the mad genius who wrote and directed Shudder’s new horror film, The Mortuary Collection.  This anthology movie tells the story of karmic punishment of evil and the nature of the storyteller. The story harks back to the days when horror had a bit of camp but was ultimately fun. After attending film school in Florida, Ryan relocated to California where he established Trapdoor Pictures to produce the ‘fun genre’. He draws his influences from 80’s horror film and authors such as Ray Bradbury, Stephen King and Kurt Vonnegut. He chats with Fox about how horror films have evolved and what makes good horror. Horror is coming home! He also chats about the process of filming The Mortuary Collection and his collaborations with Evil Dead director, Sam Raimi. David Walton narrates a true ghost story that was written and researched by T. Fox Dunham. The Little Girl that Still Plays at Rockford House tells the story of a cursed family that bought land in Lancaster, Pennsylvania after the American Revolution to build a home. Ghosts still roam the house today. And T. Fox Dunham and Phil Thomas talk about their Halloween run of episodes, their favorite Halloween candy and what movies they’re going to enjoy this Halloweekend. EPSIODE 150: VAMPIRE LORE WITH DACRE STOKER Dacre Stoker, great grand-nephew of Dracula author Bram Stoker, joins authors T. Fox Dunham and Phil Thomas to talk about those creatures of the night, vampires. An author and scholar of all things vampyr, Stoker has written the only official prequel, Dracul with author J.D. Barker, based on years of research into the files and history of Bram Stoker. Dacre shares his insights into vampire lore and reveals interesting details about the book; for example, Bram Stoker had originally written a different and explosive ending to the book that would have changed how we viewed his celebrated story. British folksinger David Walton narrates an excerpt from Stoker’s prequel, and the hosts are proud to offer a new story from premier horror author, Deborah Drake. The Vampire’s First Rule, narrated by T. Fox Dunham & Cindy Hermann, tells the story of an ancient conflict between two vampires that finally ends in the sacred cave of the Eternal Half-Lighters. Daniel had the honor of co-writing the book with the late George Romero, who created the zombie franchise with his movie, Night of the Living Dead. He explains how he went to great lengths to write it in Romero’s style and maintain his original theme: Zombies are the sympathetic good guys, a rising underclass, and humans are the villains. David Walton narrates an excerpt from the book. Also on this episode, Phil and Fox discuss zombie lore: the best movies, stories and the most effective method a zombie can use to hunt the living. Finishing the show, David also narrates a short story written by T. Fox Dunham called How my Battlecraft Guild Survived the Zombie Apocalypse. (Jeffrey) Allan DanelekSo what kind of person puts together a website like this? Believe it or not, you're dealing with a fairly ordinary guy who just happens to have a lot of varied and, some might say, unusual interests.A native of Minnesota but a resident of Colorado since 1969, my life has been a journey that has taken me down many different paths—some good and some not so good—but all of them useful in my journey. After a stint in the Navy (as a navigator and, briefly, an air traffic controller) I attended the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, specializing in illustration and graphic design. Since then, I have worked for a wide array of employers, from the public school system to the aerospace industry. I even worked for a couple of years laying out an international magazine for a local televangelist (who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty). After doing a gig as a part-time driving instructor (lotsa fun and a very educational experience) I'm back in the graphics industry once again while I wait for my "ship to come in"—whenever that might be. In the meantime, I continue to maintain this and several other websites, keep my hand in free-lance graphic work, continue to write for both myself and several other websites, teach classes at Colorado Free University and the city of Longmont, and work on my tennis game (with little success). I currently live in Lakewood, Colorado (a suburb of Denver) with my wife, Carol, and two beasts.Besides writing, my hobbies include—but are not necessarily limited to—art, politics and political history (I can name all 45 presidents along with the years they were president and what party they were, none of which has proven useful to date), world and military history, religion and spirituality, numismatics (coin collecting) paleontology, astronomy (and science in general) and Fortean subjects such as Bigfoot, UFO's and things that go bump in the night. I enjoy writing both fiction and non-fiction, much of it with decidedly spiritual, religious, cryptozoological, historical and/or paranormal overtones, and consider writing to be my life's passion.I'm ashamed to admit I didn't pursue my writing career with the prerequisite determination until fairly recently (I like to think of it as a progressive learning thing) with my first published feature article appearing in the March, 2002 issue of Fate magazine. Striking up a good relationship with Fate's parent publisher, Galde Press, I decided to submit an entire manuscript for consideration and in September of 2003, I was blessed with my first book, Reconsidering Atlantis: A New Look at a Prehistoric Civilization (now out of print). Later I was able to get a larger publisher (and one known for its paranormal-theme clientele), Llewellyn International, out of St. Paul, Minnesota, to look at some of my ideas, the result being that I have since managed to add six more titles to my repertoire. I also have had a couple of books published by Adventures Unlimited Press out of Kempton, Illinois, one that deals with the mysterious sighting of "airships" reported over California and the Midwest in the winter of 1896-97 (the first UFO flap or something else?) entitled The Great Airship of 1897 and a second, which came out in May of 2011, on the early history of aviation entitled Phantoms of the Skies: The Lost History of Aviation from Antiquity through the Wright Brothers (with co-author Chuck Davis). Both books are especially important to me, as my publisher at AUP, the well-known Fortean writer David Hatcher Childress (yes, that David Hatcher Childress) permitted me the opportunity to not only write the books, but do the layout and cover designs as well, which is a rare thing for publishers to do nowadays. (In fact, I can't think of any full service publishers who do!) As such, my metaphorical hat goes off to David for letting me take the book from concept to final product and, especially, for the faith he has shown in permitting me the maximum latitude in pursuing these projects. Further, David has agreed to publish a fiction trilogy for me under a new imprint (Dragonstrike Press), which is my first foray into being a published novelist. An adventure/horror series, the books chronicle the adventures of Paul and Sarah Manhart, the world's first (and, as far as anyone knows, only) husband and wife team of cryptozoologists as they travel around the world in search of monsters. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately for the reader), they inevitably find their subjects and spend the rest of the book trying to survive the best efforts of their quarry to kill them. (It's a case where one really can enjoy too much success!) All three books can be found on the homepage, along with sample chapters and ordering information in case you're interested.I've also recently published my first spiritually-themed novel, Friend of God, with Fifth Estate Publishing out of Blountsville, Alabama. A thoroughly scurrilous and heretical tome that examines the crucifixion of Christ through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. My thanks goes to Doctor Joseph Lumpkin for giving me the opportunity to expand beyond the paranormal into new territory (and for affording me the opportunity to also do my own layout and cover design. Books just "feel" so much more like they're yours when you can take them from just an idea to final product personally. Who says that a background in graphics doesn't pay off?)As for the future, I am currently working on several hopefully-soon-to-be-published novels with spiritual themes that I hope to see in print soon, bringing my writing career full circle from paranormal non-fiction to aviation history to inspirational fiction; quite a ride, don't you think? All in all, things seem to be moving along pretty well, making me enthusiastic about the coming years and providing me the impetus to keep pecking away at my keyboard. Perhaps the best part of being a writer has been the opportunities it has afforded me to meet a host of interesting people in the literary and paranormal community, among them real life ghost-hunters, past life regression hypnotists, Wiccans, and everything in between. It has also provided me the chance to do lots of radio (I'm told I have the face for it); over the last few years. I've repeatedly been a guest on Coast to Coast with George Noury and have appeared on Whitley Strieber's Dreamland Radio Show, the x-zone with Rob McConnell, EUP Radio with Scott Colborn, Erskine Overnight, Para-X Radio with Rusty O'Nhail, and lots of others. I've also had the opportunity to speak at several seminars, most recently at a paranormal conference at the haunted Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado as well as onboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach. All-in-all, a lot of fun.My personal philosophy is that life is about learning and growing, both intellectually and spiritually, and that is the perspective from which I approach each project I undertake. As for my writing, fame and wealth are not the goals (though they are acceptable consolation prizes); the point of the exercise is to give others a piece of yourself in the hopes that in your words they'll find something that speaks to their needs, answers their questions, or even touches their heart. To have a stranger come up to you and thank you for expanding their awareness or giving them an answer to a question they have been pondering is what writing is all about, and if you can happen to make a living doing that in the process, then it's worth all the effort. At least, that's how I see it.

EPISODE 136: HELL HOUSE OF WASHINGTON STATE Keith Linder was just an average guy who moved to Washington State to build a life, and he was well on his way when he and his girlfriend Tina moved into a nice house in Bothell. Unfortunately, the building came with roommates. What began with the sound of a child’s cough on moving day would eventually explode into a war of supernatural ‘campaigns’—as Keith calls them. The spirits banged on walls, blew up light fixtures, dropped pots, appeared as misty ladies and even burned bibles. Seeking help, Keith soon learned about the eccentricities of the paranormal community and found no explanations in the myriad theories presented by the ghost hunters he contacted. Ghost Adventures even filmed an episode at the house, though in the five hour duration of their visit the spirits failed to show any activity, leading some to call him a fraud. Fox Dunham has moved to Lancaster, PA—a beautiful area of Pennsylvania known for its bucolic setting, Amish community and a shadow world of ghosts, devils and monsters. For the show’s return in 2020, Fox researched the city for local ghost stories and discovered the unnerving history of his apartment’s location. In the late 1600s, the Paxton clan massacred the remaining members of the Conestoga Tribe, and the city buried their remains in mass grave located at Chestnut and Cherry Street, which has lead to many ghost stories in places like the Duke Street Parking Lot and the Fulton Theater. And of course, it’s where Fox and his wife live! Already, they’ve spotted specters in the basement. On episode 134, T. Fox Dunham and Phil Thomas share just a few of the local ghost stories in Lancaster and talk about some of the monsters seen in the wilderness. English folksinger David Walton narrates a true ghost story from amazing author, Nancy Kilpatrick. Did her mother-in-law use a doll to send a message from the next world?   EPISODE 132: YULETIDE MONSTERS Horror authors T. Fox Dunham & Phil Thomas are back after their Halloween adventures to celebrate the holiday season with a new episode of What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show. Author John C. Foster joins them, continuing their holiday tradition, and he comes bearing gifts: a creepy Christmas story, Yule Wine, narrated by Linda Jones. A cranky old lady pushes the owner of a Christmas tree farm in this tale of holiday homicide. And of course we have a ghost story. English folksinger David Walton narrates a creepy tale that happened to Phil & Fox while recording their Halloween at the Beach special in Cape May, New Jersey. The spirits of the Marquis De Lafayette sabotaged the last fifteen minutes of the show! Fox, Phil & John chat about the dark side of Christmas. In a sanitized version of Christmas, we celebrate a rosy-cheeked cherub who brings gifts to all the children, but Yule was once the time of monsters who punished naughty children. For every Santa Claus, there is a monster like the Krampus who terrifies the naughty. The writers discuss the various incarnations of this holiday punisher archetype such as the French scarecrow monster, Hans Trapp or the fierce troll mother Grýla. Christmas used to be a horrifying time to be a kid! Fox also chats with a master theater prop-maker and crafter, Professor Jay Duckworth, who sent the show some of his goods: a black leather Krampus stocking, Krampus cookie cutters, salt and herbs. Fox chats with the professor about his wonderful creations! New holiday carol about the Icelandic Yuletide Cat! This year, we have a special surprise for our fans. T. Fox Dunham & David Walton got together and wrote a new Christmas carol, which David then beautifully performs. The song is about the Christmas monsters previously mentioned and the darker side of the holiday, featuring the most terrifying holiday creature of them all: the Icelandic monster cat, Jólakötturinn! This feline eats kids who don’t work hard and have no new clothes for Christmas. Of your Krampus go and sing Don’t forget Belsnickle too But wear new clothes on Christmas Day Or JÓLAKÖTTURINN will devour you From What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Halloween Special 2019 from the haunted Marquis De Lafayette Hotel. Cape May is one of the most haunted towns in the world, and the horror authors bring you two hours of local ghost stories they collected in town. Fox arrived early and spent two days listening to ghost stories from the locals—stories such as the faceless ghost and shadow man of Congress Hall, the gray lady of Washington Street Mall and the spirit children who still run in the halls of the Marquis De Lafayette Hotel—and Phil and Fox hardly scratched the surface of the haunted history of this two century old Victorian town. Cape May was a wonderful place to visit during October, and the seaside town celebrates Halloween with stage shows, events for children and ghost story tours. Fox & Phil record the show from the haunted Marquis De Lafayette Hotel, where many of the town residents came to watch and share their paranormal experiences. Fox plays the ghost story from his visit to General Lee’s battlefield in Gettysburg, narrated by English folksinger David Walton, and Phil’s charming horror story, The Pumpkin Carvers. EPISOE 121: TORMENTED SPIRITS & AUTHORS Writers are a tormented lot. We should know. We’re both authors. On Episode 121 of What Are You Afraid Of? we talk to some tormented spirits and authors. Edgar Allan Poe, tormented writer and poet, haunts the state of Maryland—the place of his birth and death. Shortly after his strange passing—the circumstances have never been entirely explained—fans began seeing his mournful spirit manifesting in his family’s home, at his favorite local tavern and especially in the catacombs where his body was entombed and moved twice. T. Fox Dunham shares the true ghost story that accounts the many visitations of his spirit and strange customs that have become associated with the tragic author including ‘The Toaster!” For the last sixty years, a phantom figure has been seen at his grave toasting Poe with his favorite cognac. Some think this spirit is Poe come back to mourn for himself and the women he loved. Then Fox interviews Crystal Lake Publishing author, Mark Allan Gunnells—no association to the Allan in Poe’s name he claims. Mark talks about his long obsession with writing horror, his new work, and he shares advice with new authors who are trying to get published. English folksinger David Walton narrates his poem, End of the World, and his short story, Go to Sleepy Little Baby from his new collection, Book Haven and Other Curiosities, now available. New Orleans is the ghost city of the south, a city rich with culture and characters. In addition to the delicious cuisine, history, culture and architecture, the Big Easy is also one of the most haunted places in the world. Over the next several episodes, author T. Fox Dunham will be sharing stories of the living and the dead encountered on his trip—stories of voodoo, torture, lost souls, haunted musicians and mystical monsters. T. Fox Dunham and Phil Thomas begin episode 120 talking about the trip, then Fox shares a story about the oldest cemetery in New Orleans, St. Louis Cemetery One, known for its iconic tombs. Because the city was built on land below sea level, they can’t bury their dead, so they’ve built cities of mausoleums, necropolises where spirits still roam, drawn out by the music of the French Quarter. Then he tells Phil all about the various monsters that terrorize the bayou including the tale of the bright white Rougarou—a were-beast that punishes Catholics who violate their Lent vows. The hosts share some music from local performers including a special song sung about Fox to his wife Allison, which she dreaded! Video on the website. A birthday boy dresses like a clown and lures children with promises of candy. Also, Fox reports on a rash of EVPs broadcasted over Amazon Echoes. Is your Echo malfunctioning or taking requests from the dead? The hosts play another song from The Zombie Dandies, and David Walton narrates Fox’s flash story of alien occupation, Reality TV. Aliens conquer the earth and turn it into a television channel. Send us your summer ghost stories through our website at www.whatareyouafraidofpodcast.com. I enjoyed the hell out of it!” ~ Tim Waggoner, author of The Way of All Flesh and Eat The Night “Pain and poetry flow in equal measure through these pages. Dunham’s prose strikes deep and hits all the right notes. MERCY is unforgettably vivid.” ~ David Dunwoody, author of Hell Walks and The 3 Egos William Saint is dying of cancer. On most days death seems like a humane alternative to the treatment. Stricken with fever, William is rushed to Mercy—notorious as a place to send the sickest of the poor and uninsured to be forgotten—and finds the hospital in even worse condition than his previous visit. The grounds are unkempt, the foundation is cracking, and like the wild mushrooms sprouting from fissures of decay around it, something is growing inside the hospital. Something dark. It’s feeding on the sickness and sustaining itself on the staff, changing them. And now it wants Willie. This was my death. Life is an addiction. Love is the only force that is real. Read . . . and understand what I saw. I put it in metaphor. You do not understand what you do not understand.   Author of Mercy – T. This episode promises to scare the hell out of you as BTE Radio welcomes Author Bob Cranmer to talk about his families terrifying experiences living with “The Demon of Brownsville Road.” Eric Altman is joined with week by our next contestant in the BTE Radio Co-Host contest Marie Samuels. Eric and Marie welcome Former Allegheny County Commissioner, Politician and Author Bob Cranmer. About Bob Bob Cranmer has been involved with government since 1990 as an elected official or as a government relations specialist. He represents a spectrum of different of clients, which include governmental entities such as: Allegheny County Housing Authority, and the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny and Fayette Counties, Non-profits such as: Family Links, the Pittsburgh Opera, Ohio Valley General Hospital, and the River City Brass Band. Corporations which have included: Ammann & Whitney Engineering, L. Robert Kimball & Associates, Mistick Construction, and Bombardier Transportation. Bob's area of expertise and “bi-partisan” relationship management includes local city and county governments, as well as the entire state government in Harrisburg. Bob is a native of Pittsburgh, growing up in the borough of Brentwood where he still resides with his wife Lesa. He graduated from Brentwood High School in 1974 and Duquesne University in 1978, upon which he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army. Bob went on to serve nine years in the active army, several of which as a Company Commander in the 101st Airborne Division. He also served in the United States Army Reserve with the rank of Major during the Persian Gulf War commanding a Military Intelligence unit. Bob's employment has included positions with AT&T Bell Laboratories, AT&T Corporate Marketing, and Communications Technologies Group, LTD. Kimball & Associates, and most recently the Harrisburg lobbying firm of Pugliese Associates, managing the Pittsburgh office. In politics, Bob was elected to Brentwood Council in 1991 where he initiated an economic development corporation, which generated over 30 million dollars of new development. It now serves several municipalities and is a model for other communities. In 1995 he was elected Allegheny County Commissioner where he served as chairman of the board. As a Commissioner Bob ushered in sweeping changes to county government, reducing county taxes in excess of 50 million dollars per year, reducing county personnel by 18%, reorganizing county government from forty-one departments to six, creating the position of County Manager, a county 911 system, and forming a city/county economic development organization which generated several billion dollars worth of new projects and related economic development. He led the effort to establish home rule in Allegheny County, which created the position of County Executive and County Council. His other notable accomplishments include the construction of PNC Park, Heinz Field, and the new David L. Lawrence Convention Center. He was also a driving force behind the creation of the Allegheny County Airport Authority to manage the Pittsburgh International Airport. In 1988 Bob bought what he thought would be his dream home in the Pittsburgh suburb where he was raised. In his book the Demon of Brownsville Rd, Bob recounts the harrowing details of the evil presence that tormented his family and the epic spiritual war he fought to save everything he held dear. Strange activity began just a few short weeks after the family moved in. Cranmer said the strange but seemingly harmless activity continued for a number of years before turning dark and violent. At the advice of his mother and to allay his own creepy feelings about the house, Cranmer had a Roman Catholic priest perform a ritual blessing on the place. During the blessing his oldest son stood in the doorway in the form of an "X" and blocked the priest from entering his bedroom, he revealed. The entity's activity slowly became more sinister and interactive. Cranmer remembered being harassed on a daily basis with physical attacks. Eventually the activity was more than the family could take and the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese became involved which resulted in almost daily mass being held in the home along with multiple exorcisms. Join us this Sunday night as we talk with Bob about his terrifying encounters while living in a dream home that turned into a nightmare as we talk about his book, Demon of Brownsville Road.
