Today's guests, Dr. Ellen Prager and Dave Jones have found engaging, relevant, and understandable methods to bring the science of ocean, atmosphere, and climate issues to the so-called, ‘non-choir.' Presenting the information in such innovative and entertaining ways keeps them committed to finding new approaches to reach their target audience. This is crucial since climate change is a critical topic for everyone, not solely those interested in science.  Ellen and Dave have an extensive network within the broadcast meteorology community and work to bring them together with leading climate scientists through extreme weather, climate change, and community resilience summits. They believe broadcast meteorologists offer an especially effective way to reach people with scientific information about more than just weather, such as climate change. Additionally, they have written a book for Columbia University Press to engage the public and help combat misinformation about the ocean, marine life, weather, hurricanes, climate change, and more. Their thesis focuses on the frequently asked and sometimes oddball questions they and their colleagues receive, using easy-to-understand answers and some humor to make it more interesting. The title is tentatively ”Megalodons, Mermaids, and Climate Change: You've Got Questions, We've Got Answers. Ask Away!!!,” which is slated to come out in Fall 2024.  Ellen and Dave hope to complete a series of public-oriented events associated with the book and restart the summits (the last one was right before COVID) in the next year or two, especially as the impacts of climate change are expected to get more extreme in the future. Climate change doesn't cause hurricanes, wildfires, heat waves, or flooding, but it makes them more extreme with costly and, in some cases, tragic consequences.    About Ellen Prager, PhD Ellen Prager, PhD, is a marine scientist and author, widely recognized for her expertise and ability to make science entertaining and understandable for people of all ages. She currently works as a freelance writer, consultant, Chief Scientist for StormCenter Communications, and Science/Program Advisor to Celebrity Cruises in the Galapagos Islands. She was previously the Chief Scientist for the Aquarius Reef Base program in Key Largo, FL, which includes the world's only undersea research station, and at one time, was the Assistant Dean at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Dr. Prager has built a national reputation as a scientist and spokesperson for the earth and ocean sciences and is a sought-after speaker for public-oriented events. She has appeared on “The Today Show” and “NBC News”, “Good Morning America”, CNN, “Fox News”, “CBS Early Show”, The Weather Channel, shows for the Discovery Channel, and was a consultant for the Disney movie “Moana.”   Ellen focuses much of her time on bringing earth and ocean science to the public through writing, working with the media, creating innovative partnerships, and speaking events. Her recent publication “Dangerous Earth: What We Wish We Knew About Volcanoes, Hurricanes, Climate Change, Earthquakes and More” takes an engaging look at what scientists wish they knew about some of the planet's most powerful forces. Her latest novel for young readers, “Escape Greenland”, released in April 2021, combines fast-paced adventure, humor, and relatable characters with fun learning about climate change, science, and nature. It is the second book in a series entitled “The Wonder List Adventures” published by Tumblehome Learning. The first book, “Escape Galapagos,” released in 2019, received rave reviews from readers. The first book in her previous middle-grade series, “The Shark Whisperer”, has been called, ‘an underwater Harry Potter.' Her previous popular science book, “Sex, Drugs, and Sea Slime: The Oceans' Oddest Creatures and Why They Matter”, took an entertaining look at marine biodiversity, its relevance to the average person, and why ocean life and resources are now at risk. Ocean advocate Carl Safina says of the book, “A great book for beginners and even experts can learn from and enjoy—this is possibly the best general book ever written on creatures of the deep.”  It has also been called, “hilarious,” “tastefully salacious,” and “fascinating.” She has written articles for scientific journals, public-oriented magazines, and several other books including “Chasing Science at Sea: Racing Hurricanes, Stalking Sharks, and Living Undersea with Ocean Experts” and “The Oceans.” Ellen has also published a series of children's books with the National Geographic Society. The first, “SAND” received the 2000 Parents Choice Award, and was followed by “Volcano” and “Earthquakes.”    Ellen has participated in research expeditions to places such as the Galapagos Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and the deep waters of the Florida Reef tract. She obtained a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University, a master's degree from the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, and in 1992, a doctorate from Louisiana State University.    In 1992, as a faculty scientist at the Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole, MA, Ellen taught oceanography to undergraduates, teachers, and senior citizens in a unique educational program in which classroom learning is supplemented by extensive hands-on experience at sea aboard tall sailing ships.  She later became the resident director of the National Undersea Research Center in the Bahamas. In 1997, she joined the U.S. Geological Survey where she split her time between scientific research in marine geology, oceanography, and coral reefs and public education. During 1998, the International Year of the Ocean (YOTO), Ellen co-chaired the subcommittee on research, exploration, and education for the National Ocean Conference presided by the President and Vice President of the United States.  Ellen was a member and then Chairman of the Ocean Research and Resources Advisory Panel for the federal government and was hired by the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy to help write their report to Congress and the President. She continues to focus her efforts on developing innovative and entertaining ways to share her passion for the oceans and the environment with others.  About Dave Jones Dave Jones is a 35-year veteran of the weather industry and worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.  He also served as an on-air meteorologist for nearly a decade in the 1990s at NBC4 WRC-TV, the NBC-owned and operated TV station in Washington, DC. Additionally, he appeared multiple times on NBC's “Today Show”, NBC Europe, and CNBC Asia. While working for NBC, Dave developed the FIRST television weather website in the nation in 1995, launching a new era in communicating NASA data to the public. The website, “WeatherNet4” positioned NBC4 in Washington, DC, and NBC across the nation as a broadcast leader and early innovator of internet technology.    For several decades, Dave was a co-organizer and host of an annual weather and climate summit to bring together leading scientists and broadcast meteorologists. The summit quickly became a favorite event for broadcast meteorologists at both the national and regional levels. It reached millions of households through related live productions and, later, via social media.    In 2001, Dave founded StormCenter Communications, Inc. Under the Federal Government's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, he and his team developed a unique technology known as GeoCollaborate. This groundbreaking technology allows the sharing of trusted data across any web mapping platform in real-time, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making across various sectors, agencies, and organizations.   GeoCollaborate is being adopted by US Federal Agencies, States, and private sector organizations facilitating more effective decision-making in markets such as military, intelligence, civil agencies, climate resilience planning, energy and transportation, food, agriculture, healthcare, cyber, and homeland security. Due to StormCenter's SBIR success, the company was honored as a Tibbitts Award Winner by the Small Business Administration for exceptional performance under the SBIR program.   Dave, a former president of the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP Federation), continues to co-chair the ESIP Disaster Lifecycle Cluster. He has recently played a crucial role in advancing Operational Readiness Levels (ORLs) for trusted data to inform decision processes. In 2006, Dave received the ‘Charles S. Falkenberg Award', an esteemed ESIP-AGU recognition given to an early to mid-career scientist who has contributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities, and planet stewardship through the utilization of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet. Dave was also honored as ESIP's Partner of the Year for 2020.

In this episode of "A Conversation With," I sat down with Dorez Douglas. She is an author, poet, and film producer located in Los Angeles, California. She shared many nuggets about the film industry and here is just one of the nuggets she shared: How to tell if you have what it takes to be a filmmaker. "I'll tell you a good first project for filmmakers and most of them don't want to do it because they say, well, I can't tell a story in five minutes. But you should do a five or ten minutes short just to see how it goes and to see what it is that, you know, and what you don't know. And if you can, if at all possible, try to do it write the story in such a way that you need minimal locations should be 1- 2 at the most. Or try to find one location that has different areas, you know, that you can use maybe a backyard or patio or front porch or whatever it is. And you know, or rent an Airbnb, shoot, whatever you're gonna shoot all in that one location, five minutes. Usually, that equals about five pages depending on how much action you have in the story. And if you do that for this is just only for filmmakers to do that. You'll see whether or not you have what it takes. " ================== Dorez Douglas BIO: Dorez Douglas is an author, poet and producer in Los Angeles, California. She got her start as co-executive producer of a children's animated special for ABC-TV. The program, “Jirimpimbira: An African Folktale” aired in 1995 and received a Parents Choice Award. It featured the voices of Diahann Carroll, Paul Winfield, James Avery, Meshach Taylor, Dawnn Lewis and Jamil Smith. In the late 90's, Douglas created the Entertainment Industry Training Program (EITP) as part of Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles. The program trained youth (13-18 years old) for jobs behind the camera and was co-sponsored by DreamWorks and Sony Pictures Entertainment. For the past two decades, Douglas and her partner, 2x Academy-Award winner Willie D. Burton, have produced various projects including a feature film, "Beverlyhood.". The outrageous comedy featured Kym Whitley, Lavell Crawford, Walter Powell, Yolanda "Yo-Yo" Whittaker and Destiny's Child. In September 2020, Douglas and Burton shot a short film called "Voices," starring Lamman Rucker. The film premiered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and in Los Angeles, California. It has been submitted to several film festivals. Currently in production is "Still We Rise: Life in 2020," a documentary profiling various people around the country dealing with The Pandemic, including four men living in a group home. Their next project is a docu-drama about the African-American female founder of one of the top Charter Schools in Louisiana. Filming will start in September 2021. Feature projects in development include: "The Untold Secret," "Legal Hitman," and “Desire,” all based on true stories, and "Cabin 4,” a supernatural thriller. Douglas was born in Detroit, Michigan, but moved to Los Angeles in 1980. She is a former gospel singer and is the daughter of a minister. The Grammy’s were supposed to be this weekend and have now been postponed until March 14th from what the online world tells me. Today’s guest is part of a Grammy award winning band that was nominated for another Grammy this year…but then turned it down. Joe Mailander is the guitar player for The Okee Dokee Brothers and he is here with us today to talk more about the band’s heart behind their choice to decline their nomination as well as #allthethings. I kind of mean that—this conversation is amazing. We go deep and wide in today’s episode covering all things singer/songwriter, parenting, child development, stigmas surrounding children’s music, the evolution of family music, history, storytelling, music genres, the creative process, connection with nature, adventuring, and how parents are changing the world. Okee Dokee Brothers Bio: As childhood friends growing up in Denver, Colorado, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing were always exploring the outdoors. Whether it was rafting down their neighborhood creek or discovering hiking trails through the Rocky Mountains, Joe and Justin were born adventurers. Now, as the GRAMMY® Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers, they have put this passion for the outdoors at the heart of their Americana Folk music. Joe and Justin record and perform family music with a goal to inspire children and their parents to step outside and get creative. They believe this can motivate kids to gain a greater respect for the natural world, their communities, and themselves. The five-time Parents’ Choice Award winners have garnered praise from the likes of NPR’s All Things Considered and USA Today, and have been called “two of family music’s best songwriters. If you’re here because you’re already a huge Okee Dokee Brothers fan like myself and my kids, welcome! Joe is so great! If you’re new to their music, welcome! I’m thrilled to be the person who gets to introduce you to modern family music—not only from The Okee Dokee Brothers but other bands and musicians that Joe generously shares with us, too. They cover Disney Junior, Choo Choo Soul, Hamilton, Disney Parks, and more! Listen to Part 1 on The Magical Mommy Mondays Podcast! With over a decade as the star of Disney Junior's "Choo Choo Soul;" an upbeat, urban music video show, Genevieve's career has grown and is now reaching a second generation of fans. Combined views of content featuring Genevieve on YouTube has surpassed 250 Million views. In 2017 & 2019 she earned Grammy Nominations for her work writing Children's Music, and in 2018 she earned a Grammy Nomination as a recording artist in the Children's Music Category. Beginning her career in R&B and Hip-Hop in the San Francisco Bay Area, it was voiceover work that ultimately led her to the path of Children's Entertainment. Choo Choo Soul was originally crafted as an audio CD by video game developer Greg Johnson as he was working with Genevieve on the game "ToeJam & Earl III, Mission to Earth." The Choo Choo Soul brand was acquired by Disney in 2005, when they created new music videos to air on their morning programming block. Fans worldwide loved the funky, fun authentic music and Genevieve's soulful voice. After 4 seasons of original music and Disney Classics, a Parents Choice Award and 13+ years of touring, Choo Choo Soul has become an iconic brand within the Family Music industry. Genevieve's voice can be heard on various Disney songs, including the popular new "Ready for Preschool" and "Disney Junior Music Nursery Rhyme" series for which she also writes and produces. Disney English, a Walt Disney Publishing venture in China, also utilizes over 100 songs and recordings that Genevieve wrote and produced for the curriculum. Genevieve narrates stories for the Princess.Disney.com website as well as voicing games and apps with Hello Kitty, George Lucas Company and more. Her work with Fisher-Price on the re-branding of the Little People toy line brought Genevieve into a new arena of her field; bringing her voice to toys and commercials! Genevieve has toured the U.S. and Canada continuously over the past 13 years, with Choo Choo Soul and her independent Children's Music Brand: "Do You Know?" and continues to credit her live performances as her most favorite pastime. The First Lady Michele Obama invited Genevieve to read with her at the White House Easter Egg Roll in 2015, and when invited back for a second time in 2016, Genevieve offered to come in costume with the brand she holds dear: Choo Choo Soul. She lives in Los Angeles and writes and produces music from her home studio for her production company (Genevieve Goings MultiMedia,) engaging with fans via social media and live story-time singalongs. She also sits on the board of the non-profit organization "Say Word LA," which brings spoken word poetry into LA classrooms as part of their curriculum. Theme composed by Matt Harvey. What the Heck is a Line Producer with Sevier CrespoI've been asked by the tribe to do a show on what the heck is a line producer. Ask and you may receive. Today's guest is Line Producer Sevier Crespo. Sevier is line producer that works in the indie film world. He knows how to handle lower budgets and get the most out of them.According to Wikipedia: a line producer is a type of film producer who is the key manager during daily operations of a feature film, television film, or an episode of a TV program. A line producer works on one film at a time. They are responsible for human resources and handling any problems that come up during production.I wanted to have Sevier on the show to really go over how a good line producer can help you on your productions. He's been around the biz for years working with legends like Jerry Bruckheimer, Michael Mann, Ridley Scott, Tony Scott and Joe Petka to name a few. Here's some info on today's guest. Producer Sevier Crespo, p.g.a., is a dynamic force in film and television production, known in the industry as the man who conquers impossible circumstances to bring projects in on schedule and on budget. Accolades for his projects include BEST AMERICAN COMEDY at the NY International Film Festival, TV GUIDE’s Hot List (the only web series to make the list), a Parents’ Choice Award, and a Mom’s Choice Award. And it’s no wonder since he learned the ropes from heavyweights, Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Mann.Crespo may have cut his teeth on sequels to “Bad Boys” and “Chainsaw Massacre,” but $5-million-and-under budgets are where Crespo really shows his prowess. He developed, created, wrote, produced, line produced and acted in “Jackers” with a budget of $50k. The feature film grossed $500k in its first quarter and has taken in over $5 million since. Crespo also saved a film that was $60k in the hole (with a budget of $225k) and brought it in on budget and on schedule. And when he delivered an NBC pilot (starring Mandy Moore and James Roday) on time and on budget too, he was not only praised for an LA/NY shoot with the micro-budget, but also literally shocked a network exec over the project, who looked him straight in the eye and said, “How the fuck did you manage to do that?”Crespo studied production at UCLA and learned the ropes under the tutelage of Robert Townsend and director Sam Bayer at Ridley Scott’s RSA USA, Inc. He’s since worked with such global brands as Adidas, Coca-Cola, Nike, Marlboro, Mitsubishi, NBC, and Netflix – to name a few. Tapping back into his latin roots, Sevier worked alongside Danny Trejo in the comedy “Pendejo” and the upcoming feature “Deceived” (2017).Enjoy my conversation with Line Producer and Producer Sevier Crespo.LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODESevier Crespo - IMDBSevier Crespo - WebsiteTwitterFacebookSPONSORSHollywood Film & Television Directing Masterclass (30% OFF)Directing Actors Master Course – (30% OFF – CODE: HUSTLE)Get Your Film on Netflix, Hulu & Amazon & Keep 100% off the Revenue - DistribberHollywood Camera Work: Mastering High-End Blocking and Staging (30% OFF – CODE: HUSTLE)Werner H
