I've fallen behind a bit on creating and uploading mixes. But have no fear, it's Daniel Hawkins to the rescue! He's come up with a guest mix at just the right time. You'll remember Daniel form his previous mix, "Metallic Memories" - https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/metallic-memories/ For this set he takes us into the modern classical realm. Here's what Daniel has to say about this new mix: "I was thinking about some of the nice Neo-classical/crossover stuff I like and then got to thinking about the way having a label for a style of music can actually be a limiting factor. The best creative work in any field so often transcends genres and labels and breaks new ground - Issak Dinsen said “A work of art is a thing of infinite loneliness and the least to be understood through criticism.” I remember back in the 1970's playing Keith Jarret's solo piano albums and my friends asking what kind of music it was. What do you say? Back then they stocked it in the jazz section of the record store with the other ECM releases, but I have never thought of that body of work as jazz. Music continues to evolve - Ambient? Chillout? Drone? Electronic? Tribal? Names and more names. So what do you call this collection of cello music? Is it classical because it features an instrument that is typically found in an orchestral setting? Personally I don't think we need a label. I know good music when I hear it. The mix leans to the somber side - something strings do so well - deep and evocative. Explorations of the dark night of the soul." Thanks, Daniel, for another excellent mix! Cheers!
„The Köln Konzert“ des großartigen Pianisten Keith Jarrett. Hosted on Acast.
Una parte de aquel concierto se editó en 1994 en el disco 'At the Deer Head Inn' y, ahora, treinta años después, salen los temas que faltaban en un disco titulado 'The old country': 'Everything I love', 'I fall in love too easily', 'Straight no chaser', 'All of you', 'Someday my prince will come', 'Golden earrings' y 'The old country'.Escuchar audio

Epilog 2. How's Never 3. Ahmad's Blues 2. Love for Sale 3. Autumm Leaves 4. Poinciana *Suscríbete a nuestro canal. Banyó Bálint 2007-ben kezdte klasszikus zenei tanulmányait a Józsefvárosi Zeneiskolában. Jelenleg a bécsi Music and Arts University jazz-zongora szakára jár. APEX Express is a weekly magazine-style radio show featuring the voices and stories of Asians and Pacific Islanders from all corners of our community. The show is produced by a collective of media makers, deejays, and activists. Intimate Sounds of the Four Continents Episode #2 Intimate Sounds of the Four Continents combines Lisa Lowe's theories and music from around the world to create intellectually stimulating sonic experience. DJ Miu created this radio show with a mission to spread the message: “Freedom is Yet to Come.” I encourage listeners to take the time to read, write, and resist. We require inoculations that repel the seductions of corporate servitude. Cauleen Smith told us. Starting with reading Lisa Lowe's writing. Reading is Fundamental. Episode #2 This month's episode features Thao and The Get Down, Stay Down, Star Feminine Band, Taj Majal, and Tohur Aizawa Quartet. Sounds from Cambodia, Benin, Americas, and so much more. With winter coming in the northern hemisphere, I was inspired by music that ponders, wanders, and lingers. A time of reflection of the change from mercury retrograde and the stillness in this Scorpio season and recent Scorpio eclipse and the current mars in retrograde in Gemini. All that to say, reflect on your desires, needs, and goals. Be honest, truly honest about where you are and where you want to be. Send compassion to yourself and those around you. Listen to this set and allow yourself to transmute these energies by meditation and sonic medicine. Star Feminine Band A group of 7 girls, aged between 10 and 17 years old, from Natitingou, a remote town in the north of Benin. I absolutely fell in love with the energy of their music, light and playful and deeply talented. I found their record digging in Pasadena, CA over the summer of 2022. Thao and The Get Down, Stay Down I first heard her and her band in Los Angeles for my auntie's birthday. It was a free concert and that's how my aunt convinced our whole family to go. I was 14 at the time and I didn't really connect to her music at first, my auntie did get an autograph and it was the happiest I've ever seen her. But then when the pandemic came around, I listened to Thao's tiny desk and it ignited a love for her and her music. I had spent more time learning about folk, rock music so I was able to appreciate it more and understand the depths of her music, especially during March of 2020. Geraldo Pino So I found this next track off the Nigeria Soul Power 70 Compilation album. It's got some serious gems on it and this is no exception. Pino is a Sierra Leonean Nigerian musician. He was one of the early pioneers of modern African pop music. The Charles LLoyd Quartet This was one of the “First psychedelic jazz bands” and the group was all about “Communication is the prime concern” The quartet is made up of Keith Jarret, Ron McClure, Charles Lloyd, Jack DeJohnnette. Taj Mahal Taj Mahal is a Blues musician but fuses Caribbean, Africa, India, Hawaii, and the South Pacific so naturally I had to share some of his music. I found his music crate digging as well as all good music is found by word of mouth or found hidden in a crate. Henry chose his stage name, Taj Mahal, from dreams he had about Mahatma Gandhi, India, and social tolerance. He started using the stage name in 1959 or 1961—around the same time he began attending the University of Massachusetts. He formed one of the first interracial bands back in 1964 when he moved out to Santa Monica and they released one album together before creative differences. At that time he also worked with Buddy Lee and Muddy Waters. Later in his career, he formed Hula Blues Band in Hawaii. He will be performing in Oakland if you want to check him out on December 2 and 3 at the fox theater and in Los Angeles on December 4. Tupac Tupac is famously known for his rap music and repping Los Angeles, California. Though he was born in Oakland, CA and wrote an amazing book collection of poetry called “The Rose That Grew From Concrete” that features the very first track “Wake Me When I'm Free” as well as other tales of growing up in the ghetto and his life stories. The rose is a symbol of beauty and love showing resilience in its ability to grow in the face of insurmountable odds, the concrete. Lisa Lowe's Book: In this uniquely interdisciplinary work, Lisa Lowe examines the relationships between Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth- centuries, exploring the links between colonialism, slavery, imperial trades and Western liberalism. Synopsis An unusual Piano Concerto by the American composer Lou Harrison had its premiere performance in New York on this day in 1985. The famous jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, for whom it was written, was the soloist. Now, Lou Harrison's music was often marked by its eclectic blending of East and West, and on occasion, Harrison employed non-Western or unusual instruments in his scores, including his own home-made Javanese-style gamelan constructed from old brake drums and clay flowerpots. But that wasn't what made his Piano Concerto so singular. “I've always wanted to write a piano concerto which utilizes two or three pianos on stage, each tuned differently,” said Harrison. “And Keith was willing to try that. But in the end, I decided to use one piano in a tuning I really enjoy.” In Harrison's concerto, the piano is not tuned to the “equal temperament” system in use in Western music since Bach's day. The black keys are tuned to the medieval system of mathematically exact intervals of 4ths and 5ths, while the white keys reproduce the “just intonation” system common in the Renaissance and Baroque. And so the familiar instrument has an unfamiliar ring, but one that Keith Jarret loved: “At times in the piece,” he said, “whole chords sound like bells.” Music Played in Today's Program Lou Harrison (1917-2003) Piano Concerto Keith Jarrett, piano; New Japan Philharmonic; Naoto Otomo, cond. Country 2. My Song 3. Questar 4. This episode is devoted to exploring how self-imposed limitations can hold us back from performing at our very best. The science is clear on the impact that a negative mindset, fear, doubt and uncertainty can have on human potential. The story of the broken piano is a beautiful metaphor for breaking through self-imposed limitations in order to achieve great things in life. We'll unpack the broken piano story in hopes of challenging each listener to think more deeply about their own life and the self-imposed limitations that they oftentimes place on themselves. We'll look at how we can break through those limitations in order to live a more fulfilled and purposeful life and do our best work possible. Thanks for listening and for sharing with anyone who you feel will benefit from listening.

Connecting the joy of improvisation amidst chaos to the creative world with nods to Keith Jarret and The Beatles. This episode is completely improvised in words and music. Original Guitar Score by Sean Gaillard.

“The Comfort Of Discomfort” You’re about to learn a great deal about Chad Lawson in our conversation, so before we begin, I’ll give you a few essentials. The classically trained pianist first had the inclination he wanted to be behind the keys after watching Sha Na Na on TV when he was 5. Lawson went to Berklee College of Music where he declared himself a jazz performance major, but while there he became an in-demand studio musician so he dropped out, not seeing much point in staying in school. He later formed the Chad Lawson trio, toured as part of Julio Iglesias' band, hit number one on the Billboard Classical albums chart, composed for the podcasts Lore, Unobscured and Cabinet of Curiosities, signed a deal with Decca Records, and launched his own podcast called Calm It Down. Inspired by everyone from Keith Jarret to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench, Lawson plays with fluidity, finesse and grace. He’s a dextrous and thoughtful player who’s innovative, creative and intuitive. And he never does the same thing twice. You probably think that’s the kind of thing a podcast host says, but it’s not. I mean it is, but it’s not in this case. Consider this: Lawson put out a jazz reinterpretation of the Wizard of Oz, released an album of covers including tracks by Soundgarden and the Police, reinterpreted Chopin with a violinist and a cellist and his newest track is a take on a number by Billie Eilish. You can’t pin this guy down. And given his marital arts background, I’m guessing you REALLY can’t pin him down. This is a revealing chat and one I think you’re going to find has some pretty amazing life lessons. Yeah, I know—another podcast host thing to say but trust me: it’s true.
How habitual is it for you to take out your cell phone when waiting in lines or when in the company of strangers? How often do you strive to stay present and mindful in difficult situations? Is chaos more easily embraced when we practice mindfulness? How does practicing mindfulness help you to produce the best work possible? How does being present and truly listening help to improve the quality of relationships in your life? These are some of the questions that we explore in this installment of 4 X Mindfulness. Neila Steele shares a recent difficult situation that she found herself in, but how employing mindfulness allowed her to diffuse the situation and make a genuine connection with a complete stranger. As well, Neila shares a great mindfulness strategy that can easily be applied in very little time in our own life. This strategy helps us to stay present and focused and to better observe our surroundings. Andy shares a story that he recently learned about the amazing jazz musician Keith Jarret. The story takes place in 1975, but the lessons learned from the story transcend time and place and can easily be applied in the work that we do both personally and professionally. As well, Andy shares how simply rephrasing a common question that we ask can help to spark more meaningful and authentic conversations with other people in our lives. It you are a listener of the 4 X Mindfulness episodes, let us know your thoughts about what might have resonated with you in this episode and your own experiences applying mindfulness in your personal and professional life. Jarret Prescott talks more about Keith Jarret, and we play music associated with him.....including the last time he played electric piano, before he decided to carry on an anti-electric music crusade. We'll hear him with bassist Charlie Haden.....and you can compare his version of Goodbye with Diana Krall's.... using the same bassist. Ending off with the full Paris Concert 1988, which Jarret describes as Keith's masterpiece--one of the "outer regions of jazz": the "distillation of walking through Paris in 1988, November", "taking things from the composers he knows in the area and makes a sentence out of them".

Work for solo piano by Schubert performed by Charlie Albright, piano.Schubert: Impromptus, D. 935, Op. 142No. 1 in F MinorNo. 2 in A-flat MajorNo. 3 in B-flat MajorNo. 4 in F MinorWith a title like “Impromptus,” one expects this set of four piano pieces by Schubert to be a bit spontaneous. But anyone expecting a Keith Jarret-like improvisation will be surprised to discover how structured and planned these “Impromptus” feel.Indeed, there was some disagreement, after the fact, about the justification for the title “Impromptus.” Robert Schumann – a friend of Schubert’s – apparently maintained that the piece was really a four-movement sonata in disguise, broken up and named by Schubert’s publisher in an effort to encourage more sales. The four Impromptus are varied in character and structure, but each does seem to create a particular mood or emotional landscape, and then explores that landscape, whether through the straightforward theme-and-variations structure of the third impromptu or the more structured, sonata-like form of the first impromptu. And in this way, at least, it’s perhaps not so far off from the idea of improvisation. We’ll hear these works performed by Charlie Albright, a talented young pianist who recently graduated from New England Conservatory and Harvard’s joint degree program and is now earning his Artist Diploma at Juilliard.
ILLUMINATION McCoy Alfred Tyner is best remembered from the John Coltrane Quartet. In the past decades since he has become one of the major pianists and composers, expanding the vocabulary of color and harmony. His lusty piano is richly percussive and hammering, while full of cascading and romantic sounds. His unique and forceful style has inspired and influenced a whole new generation of musicians. Tyner was born in Philadelphia on December 11, 1938, the oldest of three children. He was encouraged to study piano by his mother. He finally began studying the piano at age 13 and within two years, music had become the focal point in his life. In the beginning McCoy practiced on a neighbour's piano. When his family bought one, he began hosting jam sessions. Among his friends and neighbours were a number of young musicians who would go on to make their marks in jazz, such as trumpeter Lee Morgan, saxophonist Archie Shepp, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Regie Workman. "Bud and Richie Powell moved into my neighbourhood. Bud was a major influence on me during my early teens. He was very dynamic." In addition, Thelonious Monk and Art Tatum were young McCoy's major influences. McCoy studied at the West Philadelphia Music School and later at Granoff School of Music. At age 17, while playing at a local club called the Red Rooster, he first met JOHN COLTRANE. Coltrane was in Philadelphia between gigs with Miles Davis. The saxophonist, whose style was still in its formative stages and whose reputation was on the rise, had no working group of his own, but secured a few engagements in and around Philadelphia, with McCoy often in his rhythm section. The rapport between the two was so apparent, that Coltrane made it clear that he hoped to eventually have a regular band with McCoy Tyner in it.His first main exposure came with BENNY GOLSON being the first pianist in Golson's and Art Farmer's legendary Jazztet (1959). By 1960, when John Coltrane finally left Miles Davis to form his own group, McCoy left Art Farmer. Tyner continued with Coltrane through 1965, participating in all the major recording sessions. The pianist participated in numerous historical recording sessions with Coltrane, including for instance Africa Brass, A Love Supreme, and My Favorite Things. While with Coltrane, Tyner also recorded many of his own albums for Impulse!, including such classics as "Inception", "Night of Ballads and Blues", and "Live at Newport", and later for Blue Note, which enabled him to feature his densely rich piano sound to great effect.Upon Leaving Coltrane (1965), there was a lull in Tyner's popularity. The future looked bright and the trio he formed seemed to have a big future. In fact he spent the next five years playing superbly but getting more and more disillusioned due to lack of acceptance. But he rebounded in the 1970's. Due to groups featuring Sonny Fortune and Azar Lawrence and recordings for Milestone like "Sahara", which received two Grammy nominations and was named 'Album of the year' in the Down Beat Critics Poll, Tyner gained recognition. He toured and recorded with SONNY ROLLINS, Ron Carter and Al Foster as the Milestone Jazzstars in 1978, and in the mid-1980s led a quintet that included Gary Bartz and violinist John Blake. Since 1980, he has also arranged his lavishly textured harmonies for a big band that performs and records when possible. In the late 1980s, he mainly focussed on his regular piano trio featuring Avery Sharpe on bass and Aarron Scott on drums. As of today, this trio is still in great demand. He returned to Impulse in 1995, with a superb album featuring MICHAEL BRECKER. In 1996 he recorded a special album with the music of BURT BACHARACH. In 1998 he changed labels again and recorded a interesting latin album and an album featuring STANLEY CLARKE for TelArc. While he avoids modern conventions and the trappings of the moment, Tyner's sound remains contemporary to this day. Tyner's full use of the piano's keyboard, with a striking exploitation of dynamics, sets him aside from more introverted players like Bill Evans and Keith Jarret. Their "musique de chambre" links them more with the European-oriented piano tradition, whereas Tyner follows the track back to the roots of the Afro-American quintessence of jazz music.Tyner's music has been a major influence over the adoption in jazz of quartal and quintal harmonies, modes and pentatonic scales. He achieved a revived appreciation as a major player in the international jazz scene, a status he continues to maintain
