Sometimes what you need is the lemonade factor. In other words, the ability to turn a sour situation into something sweet. Here's an example. In 2011, Nicole Ketchum interviewed for a job that involved designing decor for a Halloween theme. She came up with a beautiful modern chandelier design. She was sure the company would love it. Turns out, they thought the concept was “too modern” and turned her down for the job. Nicole was upset at first, but here's where the lemonade factor comes in. She could've just deleted the presentation and erased the experience from her memory. Instead, she decided to make lemonade. For two years, Nicole and her husband would go into his office on weekends to use his computer and make 3D design files for these chandeliers. Over time, Nicole created prototypes, put together a catalog and online presence, got some free buzz through blogs, and started making a name for her new brand. In fact, her chandeliers were so unique and easy to use that they got picked up by some pretty big names — Disney, Mattel, and Pottery Barn Kids. Talk about turning rejection into sweet, sweet opportunity. Six years in, Nicole Ketchum is the full-time founder of Hey Girl Decor™— a modern chandelier and accessories company. She has been featured in over 20 magazines and spoke at ALT Summit. In this episode, Nicole shares some growth hacks for Pinterst, her experience with overseas manufacturing, and how she managed to build her business while raising her newborn daughter. Big Tech Bans Anti-Abortion Information as “Porn, Conspiracy Theories” | The Mark Harrington Show | 6.13.2019 The writing is on the wall. Just recently, LiveAction.org was put on a “pornography” blocklist on Pinterest in an effort to suppress their pro-life content from being shared on the platform. Pinterst wrote, “We don’t allow harmful misinformation on Pinterest. That includes medical misinformation and conspiracies that turn individuals and facilities into targets for harassment and violence.” Created Equal has also had our information referred to as “pornography.” In an abortion debate at the Purdue University, professor Dr. David Sanders in May 2017 referred to victim images of abortion as child pornography. Watch the clip here: https://bit.ly/2WDQU26 Online censorship of prolife groups and anti-abortion content is not new. Because of our use of abortion victim video and pictures, Created Equal is accustomed to being censored online. Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram are notorious for censoring pro-life content and the leaders of the pro-life movement need to take heed of the coming total shut down of content on social media sites. Begging these platforms to be fair is a losing position. Despite referring to themselves as open platforms, social media sites have essentially become publishers. Publishers can publish what they wish and are not required to adhere to first amendment protections given to traditional public platforms. Adding the coming censorship storm was the endorsement by over 180 CEO’s of letter a letter that ran as a full-page ad in The New York Times Monday under the headline "Don't Ban Equality." Watch the story here: https://bit.ly/2WzOhtb Pro-life groups that rely entirely on social media to educate the American people on abortion are going to eventually be shut down. The crackdown I predicted years ago by big tech is happening now and there is little prolifers can do about it. It’s time for those groups who have put all their eggs in the online basket. Rather than fight a losing battle with multi-billion dollar corporations, Created Equal uses the only venue that cannot be shut down and has been proven successful in bringing about social reform – the public square. In the meantime, conservative and Christian entrepreneurs need to come up with social media alternatives like Fox News is to the establishment media. Pro-life organizations need to find an alternative soon or be left out in the cold. Please tune in and listen to Mark will provide an answer to the problem of online censorship. You can watch The Mark Harrington Show on Mark’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts. Episode 9 : The Importance of Finding a Mentor Meet content strategist, Jen Sabillon, who specializes in helping entrepreneurs attract clients by producing captivating copy. Her journey toward entrepreneurship began years ago when she was a school teacher. Although she loved teaching, Jen felt she wanted something more; more time, more happiness, more passion for life. After the birth of her 2nd child, she also desired to find a way to be able to stay home with her kids, but she and her husband felt that finances and health insurance would not allow for her to quit her stable job. After much consideration, and turning to the wisdom of Pinterst, she decided to become a virtual assistant. Although she had a solid skill set, she did not have experience in this field, and was quickly turned down. The project manager she had interviewed with, told her she has solid qualifications and much potential. They continued to stay connected and became friends. This friendship turned into a mentorship which drew out Jen’s strengths and pushed her first to believe in herself, and then to take a flying leap into the journey of entrepreneurship. Today, 8 months after jumping in, Jen has attained more: she has more time, more happiness and more passion for life. . . . and, she is making more money than she did when she was teaching. Come and learn as Jen discusses the importance of having a mentor to propel you to the next level in your journey. Why do we need a Mentor? A mentor helps you find your focus. Entrepreneurs are often crazy talented so they tend to do too many things with little focus. A mentor sees your potential and draws it out of you, encourages, and pushes you. A mentor is an accountability partner who keeps you on track and heading in the right direction. This is a key measuring tool for success. Mentoring is not a one way street. Sometimes we learn more by helping others than just by being their accountability partner. Mentors help open your mind to think bigger, strive harder, and to question more. What to look for in a mentor: Personability: Do you feel like a person to this mentor or do they treat you like just another client on their list? Trust your gut: Does this feel right? What doesn’t feel good is not good. If it’s the right person, they’ll understand if it’s not right for you. If they try to push things on you, they are definitely not the right person. Can they see in you what you don’t see for yourself? You know what you’re good at, but you don’t always know what you’re awesome at. Finding someone who can pull out your awesome is huge! A good mentor can take what you’re already good at and help mold you and push you in front of the right people. Will they work on mindset: doubt is an aspect of mindset. Working on mindset with a mentor will push you beyond what you thought you could do. Success in life is directly correlated to the amount of time you spend in personal development. Mindset comes up all the time, so work on it. Do they recognize that you are new and are willing to help you understand things you don’t understand? Mentors do not need to be expensive. Can be a friend or someone who is already in your life. Look for someone who feels right to you and can provide feedback and mindset boosts. How does having a mentor help your business grow? Having a mentor is the basis of your networking. Referrals help your business grow. Mentors can make you more visible and build your confidence because they help you believe that you are good enough and marketable. Having someone ahead of you on the road helps guide you through the process and cuts down the learning curve. Mentors push you farther because you have someone behind you. They become your sounding board to bounce ideas off and give you perspective from steps to take to price points. Final Thoughts From Jen You’ve got to find a mentor. “Without a mentor, I would not be where I am today.” Jen is 8 months into her entrepreneurship journey and is completely booked out and making more money than she did in her stable job, with more financial freedom. Kara started her business, Kara’s Vineyard Wedding in 2011 as a hobby, selling handmade wedding decor fashioned from wine corks. How To Use Pinterest Ads To Make More Sales Many businesses overlook Pinterest when setting up a strategy for online marketing. With the introduction of Pinterest ads, the opportunities are endless. Pinterest could be one of your largest generators of traffic and sales. In this article, I'll share five ways your business can get the most out of Pinterest ads. What Are Promoted Pins Pinterest is a visual social sharing community; users visit Pinterest ready to be inspired and seek out products to purchase. Pinterest is a fantastic way to promote your brand and drive traffic to your business. With promoted pins, that is taken to the next level. Promoted pins look exactly like regular pins, BUT have additional capabilities to increase the number of views, as well as the ability to target an EXACT audience. How To Create A Pinterest Ad When you are logged into your Pinterest account, you will see an addition symbol in the upper right-hand side of the screen. Click that symbol, and then select the option that says "Create Ad." Next, you will choose what type of ad you want to run. The two different options are, "Boost engagement with your Pins" and "Get traffic to your website". The engagement option is best if you are wanting to grow your Pinterest account and following. The website traffic option is best if you want to direct people back to your product pages on Pinterest. (This is the best one for making sales) After you have chosen the type of ad you want to run, you will be presented with the options to name your ad and set a budget. This is where you will decide how much you want to spend each day and for how long you want the ad to run for. After you have set a budget and named your campaign, click the red button at the bottom that says "Pick a Pin." Select the pin that you want to boost and then continue to the next step. Creating A Targeted Audience This is where all of the magic will happen. In step three of the process, you can create a targeted audience for your pin to reach. Make sure that you think about this carefully and figure out what audience will respond the way you want them to the best. Here is a list of ways you can sort your audience by: Interests Keywords Locations Languages Devices Gender Depending on the product or service you are trying to sell you will want to tweak these options to best fit your target customer. After you have nailed down your target audience you will see a section to type in your Max CPC bid (This means how much you will be charged each time someone clicks on your promoted pins). You will want to choose a number in between what other advertisers are bidding. In the case above, I choose the lowest number and as you can see it is letting me know that this is a low bid. Business Information Pinterest Ads are only available for Businesses or commercial reasons. With that being said, you will need to provide Pinterest with your Business name and address in the next step. The final step of the process will be to provide Pinterest with your billing information. You will be able to pay for your ads via Credit Card. Here Is A Video Tutorial Showing You How To Setup Your Pinterest Ad Accoun5 Tips To Run A Successful Pinterest Ad Campaign 1.) Adjust your Campaign As You Go A great feature within the Pinterest promoted pins feature is the ability to adjust your campaign as you go. If you see that something isn't working, you can change it while the campaign is still running. Find images that draw the readers' attention. The images should be HIGH QUALITY, vertical images. Colorful images always work better, and believe it or not if it has a shade of BLUE it is shown to work better as well! After you have started your campaign, don't keep dong the same things. Change up your creative ideas and explore the split testing options that allow you to run different images within the same campaign. 2.) Use The Correct Keywords Begin thinking of creative keywords that are related to your pin. Think outside of the box, because Pinterest users are always looking for different things that stand out. On the other side of this, try not to go so crazy, if you target irrelevant keywords your ads are likely not to be approved by Pinterest. When coming up with keywords, go for very specific, broad, and general terms. This will allow your "net" to be extremely wide capturing all of the potential audience. 3.) Don't Be Afraid To Bid High As mentioned earlier when talking about your CPC or how much you are willing to pay per click, make sure you don't go too cheap here. Don't be afraid to start your campaign with an aggressive bid. These will also be more valuable clicks as your ad will be closer to the top of the page when someone searches for a particular term. Once you start seeing conversions, optimize your bids to achieve your ideal CPA and increase how much you are spending to maximize the number of conversions. As with everything else within the Pinterest Ad campaign, you can adjust this as your campaign is still running. 4.) Include A Call To Action In The Pin Description You are not allowed to include a CTA on your image, BUT you can include a non-salesy pitch in the pin description. Pinterest does not allow for direct "Buy Now" options, BUT you can add text that says "Sign Up Here" or "Download This Free Guide". Just make sure you are not over the top with your sales pitch. Remember that users are coming to Pinterest for the visual imagery and creative ideas not to be hit in the head with a sales pitch. 5.) Do NOT Include Hashtags With platforms such as Instagram, it is commonplace to see a wall of hashtags and terms related to the image. Pinterest users frown upon this strategy, and it just looks spammy. With that being said include some elegant copy in your Pin description and leave all of the hashtags for other social platforms. In closing, there's a lot still to learn about the promoted pins feature and what works and what doesn't. Try different things and experiment with different images, to see what works best f or your products and services. With Pinterest, it's all about the imagery and creative nature of the pins that you are promoting. If you have images that are colorful and unique, they will perform well. The Pinterest platform will only grow in the future, and if you are learning these strategies now, it will only improve your outcome later. Lately it seems like everyone is talking about Pinterst. While we have written a few blog posts on the topic, it is hard to scratch the surface in 400 words. So this week Allison and I will be talking about this new platform. What it is, and more importantly what we think the business applications are.
