A solar rooftop revolution is coming, and it is not leaving anyone behind! From private citizens to local businesses, everyone will gain access to a renewable source of energy that will reduce costs, stop our toxic reliance on fossil fuels, empower consumers and make the energy market more accessible. In this episode we discuss it all: who are prosumers and what benefits will they have from shifting to solar energy? How can businesses increase their profits and gain more independence from the energy market? Is it true that everyone can gain access to solar energy, both in rural areas and the cities? These and many more questions will find their answers in our conversation with Francesc Cots from Ecounion, our expert in solar energy talk from Ecounion. Episode Summary:In this episode of SaaS Origin Stories, Phil is joined by Ran Aroussi, Founder of Tradologics, a cloud based platform which helps traders, investors, and firms across the world develop, test, run, and scale their programmatic trading strategies. Previously, he was a special project manager at Panda Trading Systems, and Founder of Tuki Media and Tuki Apps. They dive headfirst into the luck involved with funding your SaaS platform; just how long it takes to finish your product; the process of finding users; and why they call their customers ‘Prosumers'. They also touch on how the Ukrainian conflict has affected their job, as well as making sure you'll have the right tools for the job.Guest at a Glance:Name: Ran AroussiAbout Ran: Ran Aroussi is the Founder of Tradologics, a cloud based platform which helps traders, investors, and firms across the world develop, test, run, and scale their programmatic trading strategies. Previously, he was a special project manager at Panda Trading Systems, and Founder of Tuki Media and Tuki Apps. When asked about Ran, one of his colleagues said, ‘If talent and creativity is what you are looking for then Ran is THE man for it. Always with a smile, Ran is a true professional in his field!'Ran on LinkedInRan on TwitterTradologics on LinkedInTradologic's WebsiteTopics we cover:How Tradology removes the problematic barriers in tradingWhy they call their clientele the ‘prosumers'Ran's journey to where he is nowThe peaks and troughs of funding your SaaS platformHow the Ukrainian conflict has affected their businessThe length of time it took to get the first version of Tradology finishedThe process in finding your usersWill your work ever be truly over?Make sure you have the right tools for the jobKey Takeaways:How Tradology Removes the Problematic Barriers in TradingRan says that Tradology is solving a ‘myriad' of problems in trading, removing most of the frivolous, technical barriers that stand in the way of people who are trying to generate a solid trading strategy in stock or crypto. But who is the target audience for this? Well, Ran explains that they made the choice to refer to their customers as ‘prosumers', an in-between market of the smaller professional traders (fund managers and investment advisors) and some of the most prestigious retail traders (people who trade for a living with their own money). With such an innovative platform, Tradologics is bound to expand their audience and reach more traders across the globe.Funding Your SaaS PlatformFunding anything, whether it be your SaaS platform, a business startup, or even something like an independent movie - it can take time, effort, and a lot (really, a lot) of convincing. But don't let that put you off! If your idea and platform is innovative and brilliant, if you are passionate enough about it, then you will find someone who will invest. Ran explains that, before Tradologics, he had no experience in trying to raise money for a project. It was only through some stroke of pure luck that he managed to grab the attention of and hit it off with the first investor he contacted. He acknowledges, though, that this really isn't the norm, and that it was a very good start. It wasn't until the second round of seeking investors when reality hit and it began to take much more time.“In the beginning, they invest in the idea. Later they invest in the team or the product - whatever it is. And then, as you progress, it starts to get more difficult [...] It either becomes a massive success, or a bust.”The Unfathomable Impact of the Russo-Ukrainian War on BusinessRan has a fair few colleagues in Ukraine, and the war has, just as it has for a lot of people, affected the way business is done. Fifty percent of the time, daily meetings are constantly shifted to different times, and all too often they have no electricity or an internet connection. He recalls a time when during one meeting, a colleague was surrounded by candlelight with poor internet quality. It's safe to say that we all have the utmost admiration for those continuing to work and making a living through the Ukrainian conflict, and we wish them well.“They're amazing, they truly are. It's been a tricky road,” says Ran, wholeheartedly. The Length of Time it Takes to Get a Product DoneThe first version of Tradologics came into fruition after about six months, but Ran claims that the finished product took them around a year and a half. But remember, just because something is functional and working, it doesn't mean that it's the final ever version. No matter what you create in SaaS, no matter how talented a programmer you are, there will always be something to change and tweak further down the line. You will, most likely, never be finished, and given all the possible delays and interruptions that will occlude your process, there is no telling how long it will truly take. Therefore, it's important to have dedication, perseverance, and passion for what you're doing, otherwise you will fall victim to giving up.The Process of Finding Your UsersRan admits that he was very fortunate when finding his ‘prosumers'. It was thanks to his blog (which he also admits he hasn't updated in a while) that people saw what his idea was and signed up to a waiting list. He asked people to fill out surveys and answer questions so that they could make Tradalogics the best it could be. Now, they have about 20,000 people on the waiting-list, an impressive number for a business with no advertising!
The Social Innovation Podcast had a great discussion with Samridh Goyal, the Founder & CEO of Solar Horizon. Solar Horizon is a full service solar project consultancy operating in South East Asia and India with a mission to help companies unlock the full value of their rooftops by harnessing the power of the sun. Sam comes with a wealth of experience having been in the solar industry for more than a decade. In this conversation we talk about the future of solar in South East Asia and we cover the next big thing in solar, decentralized energy creation. This week's episode is guest hosted by Zal Dastur. Zal, has been an entrepreneur for the last 14 years and has turned his attention to helping solve the climate crisis in the best way he knows, helping for-planet businesses develop and grow. As an active advisor and investor Zal has impacted dozens of companies in the climate space helping them to reach their potential to do the maximum good for the planet. Some of the topics covered in this episode: Why solar is perfect for the urbanized world The Singapore solar market boom The challenge of net zero What Singapore got right in its model Floating solar Using the energy grid like a battery Decentralized energy creation Deregulating energy markets Blockchain enabled solar systems and energy distribution tracking An integrated energy market for ASEAN Other titles we considered for this episode: The Grids in the Region Must Start to Deregulate Finally the Banks in Singapore Offering Green Loans Peer to Peer Energy Trading Power to the People A Virtual Power Grid Power the Entire Planet With Renewables The Revolution Will Happen at the Distributed Energy Level We All Have to Play Our Part
The Russia/Ukraine war has highlighted the world's dependence on oil and gas, and how interconnected global energy markets are. This has amplified the focus of countries and companies on the energy transition, electrification, and setting net zero targets, and has increased the attention of consumers on energy security, reliability and independence, while at the same time endeavoring to reduce carbon footprints. Against this backdrop, the term “prosumer” is becoming more relevant and mainstream. A prosumer is a consumer of energy who is also a producer of energy, to self-supply power or to sell it into the grid. Large industrial companies (e.g., mining operations) often build their own power plants, producing and consuming power. With advances in technology and cost reductions in renewable energy, some power generation is now taking place at a much smaller scale, including by individuals (e.g., using rooftop solar), and we expect an acceleration in the rise of resilient energy prosumers over the years to come.
In this episode we look at how the proposed amendments to the BS 7671:2018 Wiring Regulations might affect your job – specifically with reference to prosumers Access further training in mySchneider https://www.se.com/uk/en/partners/electricians/
Historically, the mental health system, and the conversation surrounding it, has given more value to the expert opinions of providers and clinicians than the experiences of those living with mental health conditions. Today, elevating the visibility of mental health consumers is now commonplace for mental health organizations, institutions, and leaders who recognize the many advantages of giving mental health consumers more autonomy and authority in the mental health space. But what else needs to happen before we're able to truly say that mental health consumers have truly arrived? Helping us answer this is Noah Abdenour, Director of Peer and Recovery Services Programs, Planning and Policy for Texas HHS, and Anna Gray, director of Prosumers, a peer-run organization. Consumers have turned into prosumers — that is, professional consumers. Before we buy, we read reviews, ask for advice, and do other forms of research about a product or service. What does this mean for sellers? In practical terms, before you send a message, you'd better know what pages they were on to construe what they are searching for. In the sixth episode of our Human-Centered Connection expert series, Steve Pacinelli and I interview Mario M. Martinez, Jr., CEO and Modern Sales Evangelist at Vengreso, about the art and science of selling to the prosumer. Mario talked with us about: - How people collectively make up the brand - What a prosumer is and how we buy - Where the line between art and science lies in sales - How to communicate that you are interested in others - What chapters interest Mario in Human-Centered Communication Subscribe, listen, and rate/review the Customer Experience Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play or Google Podcasts, and find more episodes on our blog. What You'll Learn in This Episode: · Why reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine vary so widely from country to country · The implications of the pandemic on the future of health, the medical community and brands · What consumers expect of brands post-pandemic and how brands can accommodate those expectations How is it that the COVID-19 vaccine, in the midst of its historic global rollout, is being met with such a staggering range of reactions? Marianne Hurstel, chief strategy officer for BETC Paris, tackles this topic in a roundtable segment with podcast host Linda Descano, CFA®, EVP of corporate communications and executive visibility at Red Havas. Marianne co-authored Havas Group's new Prosumer Report, “Health and Hygiene in the Post-COVID-19 Era,” which springs from a massive study of Prosumers that Havas fielded at the beginning of 2021, drawing on reactions to the current global health crisis from more than 15,000 participants across 31 markets. The report tracks variances in attitudes to the vaccine by country and culture and analyzes what the aftermath of the pandemic can be expected to mean for healthcare, the medical community, and brands. What are Prosumers? Havas identifies them as the leading-edge 15-20% of consumers, usually 6-18 months ahead of the mainstream, forward thinking, influential, proactive and socially and/or environmentally conscious. Often the best indicator of what's to come for brands and businesses around the world, Prosumers are certainly worth paying attention to. As Linda and Marianne explore together, trust in science, scientists, and government authorities has become a critical component of mitigation efforts in the age of pandemic. While most global Prosumers expressed faith in the COVID-19 vaccines available at the time of the study, nearly two-thirds of those in the Czech Republic and around half of Prosumers in France and Belgium did not. Among Prosumers who don't trust the vaccines, the vast majority (83%) worry that the development process was “too rushed,” while—more worryingly—around a third simply don't trust the people and institutions promoting the vaccines. Marianne explains, “Trust is one of the things that is key in the way people will get vaccinated. When we looked a bit deeper, we saw that the level of distrust was really linked not only to the rushed elaboration process of the vaccine, but to a deeper distrust in the institutions that promote the vaccine.” When Linda goes on to ask what the relationship between hygiene and health will be like going forward, Marianne says, “COVID, for 83% of Prosumers, heightened our awareness and aversion to germs. Now we see [germs] more or less everywhere, on every surface, on clothes, in the air. If someone starts coughing in the subway, everyone looks at him like if he was a terrorist.” The Prosumer study also found that, post-COVID, more people will pay attention to keeping a clean home and to the cleanliness of bathroom stalls, restaurants, and public transportation, as far more people now correlate cleanliness with health. The implications of this on everything from the market for germ-killing products to pharma companies to healthcare systems will be profound. For our Red Questionnaire segment, which asks a different industry leader the same set of questions each month, Shailo Rasanayakam, integrated senior account manager, global clients, for Red Havas U.K., picks the brain of Rachael Sansom, managing director at Red Havas U.K. A comms leader and brand reputation expert in the U.K. with over 20 years' experience, Rachael has experience leading agencies as well as working in-house for leading brands such as Motorola and Random House. She is confirmed as judge at the Cannes Lion creative awards this year and has been included for the second year running in the PRWeek Power Book. With Shailo, Rachael discusses everything from her favorite interior design Instagram account to the fate of TikTok (“I think a lot of brands are very nervous about TikTok; however, those that have embraced it have really shown how powerful it can be”) to her perspective on life after the pandemic. “My key message to everybody is just live your life,” says Rachael. “If COVID has taught us one thing it's that life can be very short. It's important that we all get the most out of, frankly, the lovely texture that is life moving forward.” Give “Red Sky Fuel for Thought” a listen, and subscribe to the show on iTunes, Spotify or your favorite podcasting app. Don't forget to rate and review to help more people find us! On today’s show, I have the co-founder of FeedbackPanda and author of Zero to Sold: How to Run, Start, and Sell a Bootstrapped Business, Arvid Kahl. Arvid and I talk about how he was able to build FeedbackPanda from scratch to $55,000 MRR with only two employees, all within 24 months. We dive into what it means to manage versus own your business, which leads us to something that was discussed in the last episode with my partner Pat Hobby: Annual income versus long term value creation. My favorite moment was Arvid's answer to the question: Why did you decide to sell? The most important takeaway from this episode is to know the difference between your management role versus your ownership and to know the value of your business. Quantum Quote: “the iPhone has 100,000 times more computing power than an entire Apollo rocket ship that went to the moon” Karl Rabago led renewable energy research and development programs for the United States government, did advocacy work with the Environmental Defense Fund, consulting work with engineering firm CH2M Hill, policy analysis with the Rocky Mountain Institute, ran Regulatory Affairs in 28 countries for AES, and launched a greenhouse gas credit business with GE energy. Karl is the founder of the groundbreaking “Value of Solar” concept where we move beyond paying for what solar costs. Where CONsumers become PROsumers who also generate our own energy and are paid the real higher VALUE that energy is worth. SuperNova #1. “When we run a scenario to electrify the economy and reduce carbon emissions by 95%... we can see 5 trillion dollars in energy savings for the people in the United States by 2050… It's a win win, win, win win win scenario - you notice everything about it and the jobs, multiply… and the savings multiply, and the rates go down.” SuperNova #2. What stands in the way is anything we've ever done before, which is usually what stands in the way of everything we want to do. SuperNova #3. Here it comes again. It's going to come in another way, and it'll work for you. And it'll probably be better. And you'll be telling stories to your great grandkids about how you were here when they used to just make electricity at power plants. SuperNova #4. Think of all the ways to ask good questions. If you need something from someone, especially a bureaucrat, the best question to ask is: what would you do if you were me? It invites them to be in your space. Worst Clean Energy Moment – Coming up with a great new idea – the “Value of Solar” – and then getting attacked for it by his friends in the solar industry because it was too different. Ah-Ha: Deciding to call it a simple name - the value of solar - so everyone (regulators, utilities, average people) could understand it. Best Advice he's ever received: “Saw the wood that's in front of you”. Focus on what you're doing and do it as well as you can, and that will lead to great opportunities. Personal Success: Don't be afraid to ask questions. Try ideas out on people. Ride a bike or spend other time NOT thinking about work. Andy Kruse was a cowboy living off the grid on a cattle ranch when he started building small wind turbines out of car alternators. Southwest Windpower went on to sell 175,000 of windmills around the world until they were overrun by the tidal wave of cheap solar. Now Andy runs Underwriter Laboratories' HOMER Energy, the world leader in optimization software for microgrids that transforms energy CONsumers into PROsumers where our homes & buildings create energy, eliminate blackouts, and move us all to true energy independence. SuperNova #1. We need to optimize energy technologies for each location and different times. Solar, Storage, Wind, Geothermal, Fuel Cells, & Grid Power. SuperNova #2. Microgrids can lead to the end of blackouts. We are close to the day when every house will have a battery and solar generator, and where we can be producing energy for an indefinite period of time. When the grid goes down, you won't even know it, and the house will think about what to turn off (ice defroster, wait for the laundry, etc…) Ah-Ha: Around 2008 in the midst of the Great Recession, everyday people started to say “I want to reduce my energy bill and produce my own energy." Best Advice he's ever received: Always be learning. Think in a 3-dimensional way – look at every idea from different angles. Personal Success: Write down everything. As more digital natives have entered the workplace, they have brought with them the expectation that their software should both be a joy to use and allow them to be power users. That is, users who configure and control it to better serves their needs. And often, these digital natives aren't just aspiring power users, they are also prosumers, who can and will pay for a premium experience. But first generation SaaS products have often struggled to deliver the experience these users crave. For today's founders and builders, how do you get the user experience right when a product has to delight your power users, while being something a less savvy user can pick up and learn? In this episode, a16z general partner David Ulevitch and Superhuman founder Rahul Vohra discuss how to build products that can turn any user into a power user. The conversation touches on themes from David's recent talk on products that adopt developer tools, like the command palette and keyboard shortcuts, to improve usability, and Rahul's talk on how to apply game design principles to product design. They cover how to onboard users to drive virality, when to expand to a second product, and how to use pricing to position a premium product.
An explosion in medium and small electricity prosumers has been observed in the past decade across the EU, mainly driven by generous support measures and PV cost reduction. This era is now coming to an end with the phase-out of net metering schemes and feed-in tariffs. Therefore, new business models ensuring economic sustainability are essential. In this podcast, Nicolò Rossetto (FSR) and Donal Brown (University of Leeds) discuss how electricity prosumers can extract more value from their distributed generation assets. According to Dr Brown, prosumers might do at least three things: 1) increase their self-consumption rate behind the meter (e.g., via a micro-grid) or in front of it when allowed by regulation (e.g., Mieterstrom in Germany); 2) trade energy locally via peer-to-peer platforms or blockchain; 3) aggregate their loads and generation profiles to sell flexibility and other ancillary services. The development of digital technologies is making all these options potentially available, but regulation is not always conducive. When looking at the future of energy prosumers, the specific national context matters a lot. If you want to know more about the PROSEU project and its result, please visit https://proseu.eu/ This podcast was recorded on 18th February 2020 in Florence during the second meeting (https://fsr.eui.eu/event/global-observatory-on-peer-to-peer-community-self-consumption-and-transactive-energy-models/) of the Global Observatory on Peer-to-Peer, Community Self-Consumption and Transactive Energy Models (https://userstcp.org/annex/peer-to-peer-energy-trading/) organised by the Florence School of Regulation (FSR) in cooperation with the University College London (UCL) and the financial support of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom.
In the third episode, three university professors talk about the future of energy, challenges and trends in the energy landscape. The electrical grid of the future will seem like a bustling bazaar with millions of clean energy generation sources, all interconnected in a complex web. How can we possibly coordinate all these disparate resources, while ensuring our electricity remains safe, reliable, and affordable? The answer, in part, is an under-appreciated technology called power electronics, which sit invisibly inside everything from solar inverters to electric vehicles. In this episode of the Freeing Energy Podcast, host Bill Nussey talks with Dr. Deepak Divan, Director of the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Center for Distributed Energy, about the role of power electronics and his view of the future grid as a digitized and decentralized ecosystem that we will all have a role in sustaining.
