In part two of our look at The Marriage Lines, we get up close and personal with the career of Prunella Scales and get nostalgic about the 1960s (even though neither of us were born then).
This week on The World’s Greatest Comic Book Podcast,™ JC, Jocelyn, and Jeff assemble to help you get away from it all for an hour! In Tinsel Town, we remember Prunella Scales. Why did Disney pull the plug on Doctor Who? Which Marvel Television series are getting a second season? How did Paramount screw up […]
Mark and Pete, the Reverend and the Retailer tackle three stories that expose the strange priorities of our modern world — from comedy to catastrophe and cosmetic chaos. First, they salute the late Prunella Scales, Britain's beloved queen of sitcom wit, whose turn as Sybil Fawlty made her both feared and adored. Her death marks the passing of an age when women could be beautiful, brainy, and blisteringly funny all at once. Mark and Pete reflect on humour, holiness, and the grace of growing old with dignity. Next, they descend into the corporate turbulence of Boeing, now facing a five-billion-dollar penalty for missed deadlines and broken promises. What happens when engineering pride outruns integrity? Finally, they bare their teeth at Britain's booming black-market whitening trade, where peroxide-heavy gels are burning gums and blinding sense. The British Dental Association is appalled — and so are Mark and Pete. From laughter to litigation, the duo uncover the spiritual truth behind society's obsession with polish and performance. Whether in the cockpit, the boardroom, or the bathroom mirror, the message is clear: true faith outlasts false shine. Smart, sardonic, and spiritually charged — Mark and Pete find divine wisdom in the week's most ridiculous headlines.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/mark-and-pete--1245374/support.Supporters get updates on new projects and hot takes on the latest news plus Mark and Pete Extra in depth commentary episodes and Mark and Pete vs AI comedy episodes. Good Sunday to you,I am headed to Birmingham and Huddersfield week after next. If you are in either neck of the woods, come and see the show.Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got ‘til it's goneJoni MitchellBack in the 1980s I remember the newly privatised British Telecom, in its wisdom, decided to get rid of Britain's red telephone boxes and replace them with things made of glass or was it perspex? The originals were designed, I've since read, by one Giles Gilbert Scott, who got the gig as a result of a design competition. (I've since learned he also designed Battersea Power Station, so he was quality).British Telecom wanted a rebranding, so somebody at HQ decided to waste lord-knows-how-much money getting rid of however many phone boxes there were around the country - they're cast iron so this was not an easy job, nor a cheap one - and replace them with something better, which inevitably turned out to be worse. Here's the iconic before:Here's what they replaced them with:I barely remember these. You probably don't either. Because they were soon got rid of and replaced with these. Why did they bother? The glass replacements are just so bland you cannot not even describe them as ugly. They are just characterless nothings. Why people in corporations feel this need to glassify everything - it's happened to buildings as well, of course - is beyond me. I guess they think it's “dynamic”. (Indeed, they've done something similar to language).BT justified the rebranding by saying existing phone boxes got vandalised: prostitutes and mini cab drivers left their calling cards in them, people pissed in them. All of this is true, but there were other ways of dealing with these issues. (It's not unlike the many invented problems being cited today to justify hoisting digital ID on us). The bottom line is that the powers that be wanted a rebrand. Good for their egos, I guess. And thanks to the privatisation they now had bucket loads of capital to spend on it.Whatever. They spent a shedload and made it worse. So there I was walking along Parliament Square the other day and what did I see but a this huge queue of tourists lining up to have their photo taken by a phone box. Not one of the glass ones obviously. And I mean huge queue. See for yourself.I would say there are 40 or more people in that queue. If they each take 45 seconds for their photo, that's a good 30-minute wait. The rest of the world loves the English for who we are. For our history, our culture, our style, our character, our charm, our order, our beauty. That's why so many tourists flock here. Why are we incapable of appreciating ourselves and loving what we have created? - instead choosing to self-hate and apologise for what we have done. The rest of the world wants the England of red phone boxes, afternoon tea, good manners and Downton Abbey. They don't want England for its diversity (diversity is not London's greatest strength, despite what they mayor may tell you - London's greatest strength is that it is the capital of England, not Diversityland), nor for its gender-neutral toilets, glass fronted buildings, low trust communities or its street crime. They want England for the English. So the point of today's missive.A few years ago somebody got the no-doubt-very-well-paid gig erecting cycle sheds around the capital. Here was an opportunity to design something iconic, something which added to London - like the old red buses, black taxis, post boxes and, yes, the phone boxes. Things that characterise London, and thus things that people love London for. Here's what we got. They even put a picture of a bicycle on the side, just in case you're totally moronic.Talk about a wasted opportunity. They look like budget Anderson shelters. And what's the shelf life of one of those. Ten years, maybe? Can you see tourists seventy or eighty years from now queuing up for half an hour to get their photo taken next to one?Oh well.If you enjoyed reading this, please share it far and wide.Lots of things to share with you this week* Here ICYMI is this week's commentary:* Here is a piece from my comedy Substack about Prunella Scales, who died on Monday. It also contains an episode of a 1975 sitcom you've probably never heard of but in which she was absolutely brilliant. The actor Samuel West is our guest today, and we recorded this episode earlier this month, not long before his mother, Prunella Scales's death on 27 October, and not long after his father, Timothy West's memorial service in London (Timothy West died in November 2024). In this conversation, Sam talks about his parents, Timothy West and Prunella Scales, and what it was like to grow up immersed in the theatrical world. Timothy was often away on tour, and Sam talks about missing him - but being inspired by his work ethic and by the life of the classical touring actor. He talks about his mother's talent and about her famous portrayal of Sybil Fawlty. He talks about his own university days, and how winning a bottle of champagne in a first year drama competition was a turning point. He talks about Stanislavsky and the craft of acting. And finally he talks about his parents' love of barge holidays, and the joy their TV barging brought to so many. This episode is a celebration of a great theatrical family, and we're delighted and honoured that Sam recorded a Rosebud conversation with Gyles. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ian Partridge, the quintessential English lyric tenor, celebrated his 85th birthday in June. I may be a few weeks late in celebrating that event, but my enthusiasm and admiration for this singer has remained at a consistent level ever since I first discovered his voice on a recording of songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Partridge, in fact, has left a vast recorded legacy, including work as both a solo concert artist and recitalist and as a member of such distinguished choral groups as Pro Cantione Antiqua, the Wilbye Consort, and the Louis Halsey Singers. His solo repertoire ranged from 11th century plainsong to the thornier musical 20th century idioms of Schoenberg and Britten. This episode samples the vast array of that recorded legacy, including examples from the Baroque period by Bach, Schütz, Handel, and Monteverdi; through art songs by Schubert, Brahms, Fauré, Bax, Gurney, and Warlock. We also hear him live from Covent Garden in his sole operatic role, the Carthaginian poet Iopas in Berlioz's Les Troyens, and in lute songs and consort music by Campion and Byrd. In all these performances the voice is produced with such ease, the tone so pure and ethereally beautiful, yet never faked or “finessed,” while the interpretations themselves, no matter the musical style, are full of depth, integrity, and subtlety. Here is an enormously satisfying artist who embodies integrity and dedication to his craft. Guest stars include Jill Gomez, Nigel Rogers, Pierre Boulez, Benjamin Britten, Colin Davis, Ernest Ansermet, Norman Walker, Prunella Scales, and the tenor's sister, pianist Jennifer Partridge, with whom he gave over 400 song recitals. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. It's part 2 of our look at classic seventies sitcom Fawlty Towers. Here we look at the careers of Andrew Sachs and Prunella Scales as well as finding out what became of Basil the Rat.
In this episode of Casual Chats, Patricia and Arun Mehta from The Arun Mehta Show discuss about the 1975 BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers starring John Cleese, Prunella Scales, Connie Booth, and Andrew Sachs. The plot is about a disgruntled hotel owner named Basil Fawlty, his wife Sybil, the waitress and assistant Polly Sherman, and the Spanish waiter and bellboy Manuel who work at a run down hotel named Faulty Towers and have to content with a lot of crazy situations from health inspectors to Germans to Americans. Fawlty Towers has been considered to be one of the greatest British sitcoms ever made and the inspiration for many other sitcoms from Father Ted, Cheers, and Third Rock from the Sun. Very similar to Father Ted, this is the first time that Patricia is watching a show that Arun is very familiar with. How well does Fawlty Towers hold up? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support
While looking for a drama beginning with the letter Q, having decided to ignore that programme about that Bernard fellow, we quickly agreed that A Question of Attribution would make an excellent choice, partly as we knew it to be a celebrated and award winning drama, but also because it would be our first Alan Bennett. Oh mother! First written and performed for the stage in 1988, this drama about the fourth member of the Cambridge Spy Ring, Sir Anthony Blunt, was adapted for television in 1991 and features James Fox as Blunt, David Calder as his interrogator Chubb, and Prunella Scales as HMQ (Her Majesty the Queen). As well as praising Bennett's deft script and the performances of Fox, Calder and Scales, Andy and Martin discussed public access to art, the value of a 'time in Perth' clock, and the identity of the fifth member of the Cambridge Spy Ring. Step forward Lemaitre from The Reign of Terror and indeed Beta from The Krotons. Or maybe not. It doesn't take the pair long to get into politics and the dangers of our post-truth world, in a week when Britain was set to break international law because of the self-serving idiocy of its current government. What fun! Next Time: Ready When You Are, Mr McGill

Fawlty Towers Join Meds and Kell as they talk about this fabulous British Comedy Fawlty Towers. Written and performed by John Cleese and Connie Booth, Fawlty Towers is now over 34 years old and still going strong. Only two series were made and its a formula that comedians such as Ricky Gervais have taken upon themselves to keep their own comedy fresh. Also starring Andrew Sachs and Prunella Scales the team created a wonderful programme that has never been beaten. The premise of the show is centred around Basil Fawlty played by Cleese a hotel owner who is dominated by his wife Sybil and has an amazing disregard for anyone who is below what he classes as 'the best class'. A fantastic comedy that is worth not only hearing about here but must be viewed to get the ultimate pleasure of Cleese and Booths writing.
The castaway in Desert Island Discs this week is one of the country's favourite actresses - Prunella Scales. She's most easily recognised as Sybil Fawlty, wife of John Cleese, the manic hotelkeeper in the television series Fawlty Towers, but it's a role which represents a very small part of all she's done. Since her debut in Bristol 40 years ago, she has never been out of work, and recently she's scaled new heights with her portrayal of the Queen in Alan Bennett's A Question of Attribution. She'll be talking to Sue Lawley about the problems associated with playing such a well-known and much-loved figure, and also about the rest of her long and successful career.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: Ruht Wohl Ihr Heiligen Gebeine by Johann Sebastian Bach Book: Complete works in German by William Shakespeare and The Bible in Russian and a Russian dictionary Luxury: A huge tapestry kit
