In this powerful episode of the LowCarbUSA podcast, Doug Reynolds and Pam Devine sit down with Beth McNally and Matt Miernik, the couple behind T1D Nutrition, to discuss their journey with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the transformative role of nutrition in managing the condition. Their journey began in 2015 when their son Lachlan was diagnosed with T1D at age 9. After months of frustration with conventional high-carb, insulin-heavy treatments, they adopted a very low-carb diet, which dramatically improved Lachlan's blood glucose stability and brought his A1C levels into the normal range. Now, at 18, Lachlan is a thriving athlete, and Beth and Matt are dedicated to sharing the benefits of therapeutic carbohydrate reduction with others facing similar challenges. A central theme of the conversation is the recently published Position Paper by The SMHP on therapeutic carbohydrate reduction for type 1 diabetes, to which Beth, Matt, and a team of experts have made significant contributions. This paper will revolutionize T1D management by advocating for therapeutic carbohydrate reduction as a viable, evidence-based option. It calls for healthcare providers to support patients choosing this approach and underscores the importance of continued research and education on low-carb nutritional strategies. Beth expresses her enthusiasm for the Position Paper, noting its potential to challenge current T1D care practices. With only about 17% of youth and 21% of adults meeting the American Diabetes Association's A1C target of 7.0, this paper could be a game-changer, providing clinicians with new guidelines and resources to enhance patient outcomes. It advocates for open access and support for those exploring low-carb diets as a therapeutic intervention, signaling a much-needed shift in mindset. Throughout the episode, Beth and Matt stress how this Position Paper will empower both patients and clinicians, offering a solid foundation for discussing low-carb options within healthcare teams and integrating evidence-backed guidelines into mainstream T1D care. They encourage families to share the Position Paper with their doctors, fostering more comprehensive and supportive care. The couple also reflects on their involvement in the January 2024 LowCarbUSA Boca Raton Symposium for Metabolic Health, which featured a dedicated Type 1 Day. This event assembled international experts in T1D management, including Dr. Ian Lake, Dr. Suzanne Schneider, Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Belinda Lennerz, and Dr. Robert Cywes, who shared innovative insights into how nutrition can stabilize blood glucose levels and improve the quality of life for those with T1D. These presentations set the stage for the Position Paper and underscored the need for a low-carb approach to gain wider recognition and support within the medical community. Matt offers additional insights into why therapeutic carbohydrate reduction is so effective, explaining how reducing carbohydrate intake decreases insulin dependency, leading to more stable blood glucose levels. He compares it to "removing logs from a fire," minimizing the blood glucose fluctuations that make T1D so difficult to manage. This Position Paper will address these scientific principles, equipping clinicians with the knowledge and tools to guide their patients more effectively. Matt also discusses the phenomenon of "double diabetes," a condition where individuals with type 1 diabetes develop insulin resistance, resembling type 2 diabetes. He explains how the conventional high-carb diet paired with large insulin doses can lead to this dangerous overlap, increasing health risks and complications. By adopting a low-carb approach, insulin needs are minimized, reducing the chances of developing double diabetes and supporting better metabolic health in people with T1D. Doug and Pam share how eye-opening the Type 1 Day event was for them and other attendees, with many healthcare professionals admitting they gained more insight into T1D management in one day than they had in their entire careers. Welcome to part 2. There seems to be an explosion in meat-based diets. However, are these meat-based diets truly healthy? And what are the spiritual, ethical, and environmental questions amiss? Is there a plant-based response? All that and more discussed.
In a recent LowCarbUSA®, hosts Doug Reynolds, MHP and Pam Devine, MHP spoke with Dr. Jeremiah Eisenschenk and Dr. Angie Ausban, two prominent practitioners from the Brainerd Lakes area in Minnesota, about the upcoming LowCarbUSA® Metabolic Health Conference in Brainerd Lakes. This one-day event, scheduled for September 21, aims to unite healthcare professionals and the public around the importance of metabolic health. Dr. Eisenschenk, a board-certified Family and Obesity Medicine physician, shared his journey into metabolic health, which began after attending a transformative lecture in 2016. Since then, he has co-founded the Metabolic Health Conference in Brainerd Lakes and Essentia Health – Brainerd Weight Management Department, bringing his expertise to both the hospital and community settings. "I saw some pretty impactful results, even in six months," he noted, reflecting on the positive changes in his patients' health through carbohydrate reduction approaches. Dr. Ausban, who has a background in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, recounted her own evolution in understanding obesity and metabolic health. After co-founding the CentraCare Medical Weight Management program, she became certified in Obesity Medicine and later joined CRMC as the Medical Director of the Metabolic Health and Medical Weight Management Program. "It's not just obesity and diabetes; it's everything—heart disease, stroke, dementia," she emphasized, underscoring the widespread impact of insulin resistance. The one-day event is open to the public, but technical enough to also offer optional CME opportunities for healthcare professionals, carbohydrate reduction meals, and local vendors, fostering a collaborative environment between the community to address the growing metabolic health crisis. The symposium will feature a diverse lineup of expert speakers, including: Robert Cywes, MD, PhD Gurpreet Padda, MD, MHP, MBA Mark Cucuzzella, MD, FAAFP, MHP Vera Tarman, MD Jeremiah Eisenschenk, MD Angelina Ausban, MD Shawn Roberts, MD. This event is unique for the Brainerd Lakes area, as four health systems have come together to support this initiative—a rare collaboration in today's competitive healthcare landscape. Dr. Eisenschenk highlighted the importance of this unity, saying, "If we can coalesce for this greater mission... any part of America, any part of the world, can do this." In addition to the symposium, a charity golf event was going to be organized by Dr. Ausban's husband, Kevin Smith, but will now be postponed and take place next spring to raise funds for the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners and the local Boys and Girls Club. Dr. Ausban invited attendees to participate, adding, "We are super excited about this event." The upcoming symposium promises to be an inspiring and educational gathering, providing healthcare professionals and the public with the tools and knowledge to improve metabolic health and, ultimately, the quality of life for many. Bruce Schnaak Bruce Schnaak says: After 4 years of being on the carnivore diet, I found myself discussing the subject of my “high” blood lipids with my new PCP. Out of that meeting, I managed to get an order for a Coronary Calcium Scan (C AC) to settle the “dispute”. The scan came back and I scored a 65…which isn't a zero, but respectable for someone of the same age as the score. That news got overshadowed by the radiologist noting in the report about a “possible lytic lesion” on a vertebrae. Several different scans over the months (including a vague PET scan) led to an eventual needle biopsy of my T11 vertebrae where a diagnosis of Metastatic Melanoma was pronounced. I got a referral to an oncologist and treatment plans were soon discussed. Fortunately, I also am a patient of Dr. Robert Cywes and he recommended reaching out to MD Anderson Cancer Center and I was able to line up an appointment with them and elected to make monthly trips there for treatment. In the ensuing months I tightened up my eating by ensuring I maintained myself in a level of therapeutic ketosis…this was achieved by increasing fat and periodically using exogenous ketones. Extended fasts were also implemented around my infusions to drive my ketones even higher. After 3 months of treatment, my lesion was officially stable…although my radiology oncologist noted some shrinking. Another 3 months later I was declared NED (no evidence of disease). I completed my year of treatments 3 months ago and will continue to have monitoring scans quarterly. Now, things are getting back to normal. I'm confident my way of eating was likely the reason my cancer hadn't spread to many areas as is common with others with this diagnosis…in fact it was likely shrinking when discovered. That and the fact my “metabolic house” was in order enabled me to escape most of the negative side effects of treatment.. My goal now is to share my story with others and hope it inspires and emboldens. Dr. Robert Cywes (MD, Ph.D.) is known as the Carb Addiction Doctor. Having suffered from carb addiction and obesity himself, he has both the personal and professional experience to help others overcome their addiction and restore their health. He is a medical doctor and bariatric surgeon with a Ph.D., working in clinical practice. His area of interest was in adolescent obesity and the impact of the liver and metabolic syndrome on young patients. This research led to a comprehensive understanding of the toxicity of chronic excessive carbohydrate consumption as the primary cause of obesity and obesity related problems. His medical practice focuses on the psychology and physiology of carbohydrate addiction. He has developed a treatment programme for this. His background makes him uniquely qualified in this area. This is one of those interviews that is well worth sharing with your GP or health professional. Our conversation today was wide-ranging in the topics we covered. Dr. Rob shares his own story of shame and humiliation that came with obesity and his growing understanding of the root cause and how best to manage this. He realised his weight struggle wasn't a problem with calories; it was with a drug called sugar and his emotional management system. We talk about the difference between being a carbohydrate addict, harmful user, or a social user. How carb addiction starts and that it is due to an individual's unique genetic response to their food environment. It's not due to a “flawed” personality. He explains some of the techniques he uses to help patients cope with their addictions and reclaim their health. Strategies for dealing with “falling off the wagon” are important and Dr Rob has some great advice. This was a favourite interview for me. We are lucky to be joined by the "Carb Addiction Doc,” Dr. Robert Cywes. Dr. Cywes works in the trenches and has a wealth of knowledge to share about preventing and managing diabetes. This episode touches on the challenges of balancing conventional and natural approaches to diabetes treatment. Plus, Dr. Cywes discusses the various ways to minimize your chances of developing diabetes and the importance of changing one's mindset to improve health outcomes. This episode is packed with valuable information for anyone looking to prevent diabetes, manage diabetes, and tackle diabetes risk factors.Diabetes: A Growing Problem, a Growing Need for SolutionsMedication is a tool that can be used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including diabetes. However, it is essential to understand that medication alone cannot fix the root cause of the problem. In the case of diabetes, high blood sugar is just the tip of the iceberg. There is much more to be addressed to truly help those with diabetes.Dr. Cywes emphasizes the importance of addressing behavior and treating the cause of the disease. Medication can be used as an accelerant to treatment, but it should not be relied on as the sole solution. Instead, medication should be used in conjunction with lifestyle changes and addressing the root cause of the problem. This can ultimately lead to remission of the disease and the ability to deprescribe medication.CGMs: A Game-Changer for Diabetes CareOne crucial tool for managing diabetes is the continuous glucose monitor (CGM). CGMs provide real-time information about blood sugar levels, which is essential for effective diabetes management. Blood sugar levels should not be a flat line. Instead, blood sugar levels should fluctuate within an appropriate range for each individual. CGMs can help patients understand their blood sugar fluctuations and adjust their diet and medication as needed.Sugar Trap: How to Avoid Insulin Resistance and DiabetesDr. Cywes highlights the adverse effects of excess sugar consumption on insulin resistance. The body has a delicate balance between glucagon and insulin, which work together to stabilize blood sugar levels. However, when excess carbohydrates or protein are consumed, the body prioritizes the storage of these nutrients, leading to insulin dominance instead of glucagon dominance. This can lead to insulin resistance, where the body blocks the insulin receptors to protect cells from the damaging effects of excess sugar.Key Takeaways:[02:31] Treating diabetes beyond blood sugar[07:06] Blood sugar and glucagon[11:53] Insulin and glucagon dominance[17:36] Insulin resistance causes and theories[21:26] Carbohydrates and fat consumption[25:09] Medication for insulin resistance[32:25] Insulin management in diabetes[36:19] Insulin testing and dysregulation[40:11] Glucagon's importance in health[43:04] Satiety hormones and pathways[57:10] Insulin suppression in carnivores[01:03:06] Personalized medicineResources:JSAPA: https://obesityunderstood.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk4Mk7vArjSYBa1VKv9-chAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/carbaddictiondoc/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/carbaddictiondoc/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@carbaddictioSupport the show

LowCarbUSA® co-founders Doug Reynolds and Pam Devine recently interviewed Tia Reid, who used a low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) way of eating to overcome type 2 diabetes, NAFLD, hypertension, obesity, GERD, and more. Tia sustainably lost 85 pounds and came off 20 medications, after finding Dr. Robert Cywes, MD, PhD, who advised her to end her "love affair with carbs." "I really did think I was going to die," said Tia, "but low-carb, high-fat nutrition healed my body. Type 2 diabetes doesn't have to be chronic and progressive." Tia works as Director of Nutritional Services at a local critical access hospital, and she has been able to incorporate low-carb/keto foods into the food options offered to staff at the hospital. Tia has earned her SMHP Metabolic Health Practitioner (MHP) accreditation, as well as certifications focused in LCHF/Keto Nutrition, Diabetes Reversal and Food Addiction, and she is SUGAR Certified and licensed through Bitten Addiction. Doug and Pam talked with Tia about the upcoming Symposium for Metabolic Health to be held in Boca Raton, Florida, January 13-15. The event will also include a Bonus Clinical Workshop on Carbohydrate Addiction for practitioners who are able to arrive early – to be held on the afternoon of Thursday, January 12, in addition to an entire day dedicated to the topic of carb addiction during the main presentations. During their conversation, Doug, Pam and Tia referenced an 11-chapter series of videos featuring Dr. Cywes. The series is titled Diabetes Understood, and is available for free on the LowCarbUSA® website. This week Dr Lucy chats with US based surgeon and carb addiction specialist Dr Robert Cywes. Dr Cywes treats hundreds of patients with carbohydrate addiction and see obesity as the result of addiction not the actual problem. Like Dr Lucy and Dr Mary, he is really interested in helping people get to the root cause of their relationship with food. In his practice he treats obesity and metabolic disease by using an addiction model rather than a diet model. Interestingly in addiction medicine, we use a range of medications, many of which are now being used in obesity Join the sugar addiction Challenge $7 for 7 dayshttps://www.rlmedicine.com/nosugar Follow Dr Robert CywesYouTube https://youtu.be/c2IQ3SJtaaAInstagram https://www.instagram.com/carbaddictiondoc/ Extra show notes & episode transcripthttps://www.rlmedicine.com/93See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Laura and Judy share some real talk with Dr. Robert Cywes. All too often, we focus on weight gain or metabolic syndrome, but the root cause can often be an internal, mental struggle. Not everyone thinks they have a not-so-ideal relationship with food, but the truth is that many of us do, especially with carb addiction. This is a very raw and candid discussion about healing our relationships with food that ultimately can lead us to healing.Finding what works for youBridge foods and drinksBlame and empowermentNot the what, but the whyMind cleansing momentCarbs as a form of emotional management The power of choice (and safe boundaries)The real reason for snackingCarb addiction vs. safer habitsHabits: rewards attached without hardshipDemand-driven vs. supply-driven (toxicity)Absolving addiction: humility and experienceOAC – Own as soon as you can Objectify mistakes but learn the why and figure out an action planOne paradigm does not fit allDeath is a fixed number. Today, I am lucky to have here with me, a specialist in Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery for adults and adolescents, Dr. Robert Cywes. He has been doing bariatric surgery for 18 years, performing over 8,000 surgeries. This is an episode that originally aired on March 2020, and it was so good we decided to re-release it here today. Dr. Cywes' medical training began in Cape Town, South Africa, where he received his medical degree from The University of Cape Town. In 1989, Dr. Cywes moved to North America and completed a year-long residency in Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University's Columbus Children's Hospital. After completing his pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, Dr. Cywes was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric and Fetal Surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where he did hepatic stem cell research. During this time, Dr. Cywes became increasingly interested in adolescent obesity and the impact of the liver and metabolic syndrome on young patients. Dr. Cywes' research led to a comprehensive understanding of the toxicity of chronic excessive carbohydrate consumption as the primary cause of obesity and so-called obesity-related co-morbidities, and he became interested in developing a clinical program to treat obese patients using this knowledge. Dr. Cywes relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where he joined the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Nemours Children's Clinic and Wolfson Children's Hospital. This led to a national meeting in Jacksonville where guidelines for adolescent obesity surgery were established. Dr. Cywes established JSAPA to continue his work in both adolescent and adult obesity treatment and surgery, and in 2013 opened a practice in Palm Beach County, Florida. He now works with a highly experienced team of professionals from a variety of medical sub-specialties to better care for obese patients. He has developed the practice into an internationally recognized Center of Excellence for obesity surgery. The practice uses a cognitive behavioral therapy approach that addresses carbohydrate addiction, along with bariatric surgery, to help patients manage their obesity long term. In this episode, Dr. Cywes opens the show discussing the correlation between carbohydrates and toxic drugs. Our bodies do not need to run on sugar; our bodies prefer a keto lifestyle. Also, Dr. Cywes explains effective methods of treating diabetes and what's wrong with conventional treatments. Stay tuned, as Dr. Cywes discusses dopamine fasting, serotonin loading, and how our feedback controls for survival work. : Episode 1971 - On this Friday show, pediatrician and bariatric surgeon Dr. Robert Cywes joins Vinnie to discuss preventing surgery with diet, obesity as a substance abuse problem, mental health crises, and more. Https://www.vinnietortorich.com/2021/11/preventing-surgery-mental-health-crises-dr-robert-cywes-episode-1971 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS PREVENTING SURGERY Dr. Cywes is a surgeon. He does many bariatric surgeries -- gastric bypass surgeries. However, he only does surgeries when they're necessary. Surgery is not an alternative to a lifestyle change. We can PREVENT surgeries through lifestyle changes, like healthy, low-carb eating. Dr. Cywes does see a good number of children getting gastric bypass-like surgeries. Surgeries *can* be a necessary step for changing one's life. But really, we're seeing kids begin insulin resistance at age 5. THIS is what we need to change. MENTAL HEALTH CRISES Eating carbohydrates and consuming nicotine are used by kids as way to cope with emotional problems. Many kids use these drugs because they are riddled with anxiety. We can help these feelings -- drugs like sugar and nicotine are NOT answers, they just do more harm. We need to discuss the mental health epidemic among young poeple. Obesity is a substance abuse problem. FAT DOC 2 IS AVAILABLE ON iTUNES and AMAZON Please also share it with family and friends! Buy it and watch it now on iTunes to get it to the top of the charts. Welcome to Protecting Your Nest with Dr. Tony Hampton. Dr. Robert Cywes is a specialist in Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery. He has over 18 years and 8000 surgeries worth of experience under his belt. He earned his MD from The University of Cape Town, completed his residency in Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University's Columbus Children's Hospital, completed his general surgery residency at the University of Toronto, and earned his Ph.D. in Liver Carbohydrate Metabolism and the effect of glucose metabolism on liver transplant immunology.
