77: The Truth About the Carnivore Diet: Why Nose-to-Tail Is Essential!

The Primal Shift

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 22, 2025 9:01

Is eating only steak and eggs really the optimal way to follow the carnivore diet? Or are we missing something vital by overlooking the nutrient-rich parts of the animal? In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, we explore what the carnivore diet gets right, where it often falls short, and how eating nose to tail can revolutionize your health. The carnivore diet is a powerful tool for healing chronic conditions like IBS and autoimmune disorders, but many people focus solely on muscle meat and eggs, ignoring the broader spectrum of nutrients our bodies need to thrive. Drawing insights from evolutionary history and nutritional science, I explain why organs, fat, and connective tissue are indispensable for a truly optimal diet. After all, even true carnivores like lions and wolves prioritize these nutrient-dense parts of their prey. We also take a critical look at commonly consumed foods within the carnivore community, such as poultry and eggs. While egg yolks are nutritional powerhouses, egg whites come with potential downsides, including anti-nutrients like avidin that can interfere with biotin absorption. Similarly, conventional poultry — which is high in unstable PUFAs and low in nutrients — was never a staple in ancestral diets. These details matter when aiming for peak health. I also address common concerns about organ meats and why eating nose to tail aligns with how humans evolved. If you find fresh organs impractical, freeze-dried supplements can offer a convenient alternative without compromising on nutrients. Whether you're using the carnivore diet to heal or optimize, this episode will help you rethink your approach and get the most out of your meals. And once healing is achieved, I share how you can reintroduce other foods — like seasonal plants, raw honey and dairy — while maintaining a foundation of nutrient-dense animal foods. Are you ready to embrace the way humans were designed to eat? Tune in for practical tips, evolutionary insights, and strategies to make the carnivore diet work for you. Don't forget to share your thoughts: Have you tried a nose-to-tail approach or strict carnivore? What's worked for you? Let's continue the conversation in the comments or on social media. After wrapping up the first season of the Primal Shift Podcast, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the journey so far: 60 episodes packed with insights on how to bridge the gap between ancestral living and modern demands. This season has been about laying the foundation of a healthy lifestyle, covering everything from nutrition and exercise to stress management and reconnecting with nature.  If you're new to the podcast, I highly recommend diving into Episodes 3 to 10, where I discuss the core principles that guide everything we do here. One of the highlights of this season has been the incredible guests who've shared their expertise. For instance, in Episode 39 I had an eye-opening conversation with Dr. Sean Baker about the carnivore diet, and in Episode 43 I talked to former Navy SEAL Dr. Kirk Parsley about optimizing sleep.  Each episode offers something unique — whether it's practical tips or deep dives into the science behind health and wellness. I've also covered topics that are close to my heart, like why I transitioned away from keto after three years (Episode 11) and the importance of growing your own food (Episode 56). I've particularly enjoyed sharing my personal experiences, like how I maintain a strong and lean physique (Episode 12) and the wellness practices I've adopted to stay balanced amidst the chaos of modern life (Episode 58). These episodes aren't just about theory — they're about the actionable steps I've taken to align my lifestyle with the principles I believe in. Looking ahead to season two, I'm excited to mix things up with a combination of shorter, bite-sized episodes and more in-depth interviews. One week you might get a quick 10-minute episode focused on a specific topic, and the next week, we'll feature a longer, more detailed conversation with an expert. I'll also be bringing my wife Kathy on board more frequently to share her perspective on homeschooling, homesteading, and how we're making our lifestyle work as a family. Her insights add a different dimension to the podcast, offering a more rounded view of how we navigate this journey together. Another thing I'm really looking forward to is giving you more behind-the-scenes looks at how we live day-to-day. I'll be sharing more about our approach to growing our own food, the challenges and rewards of homeschooling, and how we're building resilience as a family.  I'm eager to continue this journey with you and appreciate all the feedback you've provided along the way. Your input helps shape the direction of the podcast, and I'm always interested in hearing what topics you'd like to explore next. If there's anything specific you'd like to hear about in the next season, don't hesitate to reach out! Thanks for being a part of the Primal Shift community. Season 1 has been an incredible ride, and I can't wait to see what Season 2 has in store for us all. There's a common misconception that if you're eating right and getting enough exercise, you're living a healthy lifestyle. But the truth is, there's more to optimizing your health than just diet and exercise, and understanding how to cover several different angles of your health is essential for living a primal lifestyle.   Welcome to another episode of the Primal Shift podcast, where host Michael Kummer shares an overview of the eight key primal shifts, or core principles, that make up a healthy lifestyle. He shares some of the misconceptions about optimizing your health, and why sometimes getting outside of your comfort zone is the key to thriving.  What we discuss: 00:01:42 Primal shift #1: Sleep 00:03:31 Primal shift #2: Nutrition 00:04:56 Primal shift #3: Exercise 00:06:01 Primal shift #4: Stress management 00:07:01 Primal shift #5: Environmental toxins 00:08:00 Primal shift #6: Hormesis 00:08:55 Primal shift #7: Belonging and tribalism 00:10:53 Primal shift #8: Reconnecting with nature                                                                                                                                                                             Key Takeaways: Prioritizing sleep is crucial for overall well-being and optimal health. Sleep allows our bodies to recover, restore, and consolidate memories, and without giving our bodies sufficient time to undergo these processes, we cannot expect to perform at our best physically or mentally the following day.  The purpose of exercise is to push your body beyond its comfort zone and subject it to a certain level of stress. By carefully selecting the right stressors through exercise, you can help your body develop resilience and become stronger. Reconnecting with nature is essential for overall health. For millions of years we walked barefoot, exposing ourselves to natural elements. Going outside barefoot for just a few moments a day can have a big impact on our well-being. I feel bad for the few people who believed he was natty.” “This was bound to happen,” another agreed. “I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did.” In an Instagram video depicting a workout that Johnson posted on Monday, detractors alluded to the revelations, with one noting, “Must be nice to spend 15k+ a month on drugs” and another added, “Better not turn your wifi off tonight bro. https://bengreenfieldlife.com/madetothrive Welcome to the show. Today's episode is with biohacker and podcaster Steve Stavs from South Africa, whom I met at the Health Optimisation Summit held in the latter part of May 2022. Steve Stavs' philosophy is one of researching to reveal. He has spent his life immersing himself in knowledge and then turning these insights into actionable strategies designed to enhance the human state. He is a successful entrepreneur, leadership coach, international lecturer, and holistic practitioner. Steve continues to run his wellness practice Made To Thrive, which he launched 20 years ago. He has aided many to reach their highest potential in all aspects of their lives and this has inspired him to take both his message and his mission to a wider audience. (You can save 15% on coaching and consulting with code BEN15 along with 5% off products in the shop with code BEN5.) Steve draws on his background in Western Medical Practices and integrates the best of this knowledge with the profound teachings of Ancestral Living and Chinese Medicine. Thousands of patients can testify to the effectiveness of this comprehensive approach, which combines an understanding of ancient traditional cultures while including the most researched science in biochemistry, physiology, psychology, and nutrition. An avid athlete, Steve is dedicated to exploring the boundaries of physical ability and pushing his body to its optimal performance. He is a Green Number Comrades runner and one of his ultimate goals is to run the Comrades Marathon at the age of 100. Steve supports the Community of the Hope Risen Foundation–a nonprofit organization founded by Tabitha and Rob Lage, who are passionate about ensuring humans have absolute freedom to live out their true purpose, know their why, and live according to this ethos. Hope Risen has a vision to spread Hope, Love, and Justice in the quest to end modern-day slavery and exploitation. They are passionate about helping survivors of human trafficking shine again. The foundation runs a number of prevention and awareness initiatives alongside direct interventions to rescue, restore and reintegrate women, men, and children who have been exploited. Steve asked me if he could interview me for his podcast. I told him he could, but only if he can keep up with me on one of my aerobically and intellectually challenging "walk & talk" podcasts. "Not a problem," replied Steve, and I believed him—as he is also the founder of the Comrades Marathon, an annual 56-mile race that builds community (and some serious physical resilience) among members of his community in S. Africa. So Steve can take some steps! And thus we took to the backstreets and parks of London during some free time from the summit and discussed many topics, such as: Fear vs. purpose-based motivation The African word for "community" and how it differs from our conception in the West The lost art of storytelling Why the "free" biohacks are just as important as the expensive gadgets found at your favorite conference And more... I enjoyed our conversation so much that I wanted to share it on my podcast feed as well. So I hope you enjoy it (and you'll hear that Steve was able to keep up with me just fine!). In this episode, you'll discover: -Steve describes the Comrades Marathon... -Fear vs. purpose based motivation for human action... -Ubuntu and the spirit of community... -An environment that facilitates success... -Storytelling as a means of building community... -Arts and music as a means of healing... -Gathering and preparing food that sustains community... -Putting biohacking in its place regarding our quality of life... -The most important biohacking metrics when it comes to stress and anxiety... -The importance of having a health coach... -Embracing suffering to bring joy... -Ben Greenfield's message of hope for the future... -And much more... In this episode, Geoffrey Woo speaks with Mansal Denton, the founder of Sacred Hunting, an entrepreneur, author, and explorer of our relationship to life and death through hunting. Mansal is on a fascinating journey — from making an early mistake that landed him in jail to paying his debts to society to being an early thought leader in the nootropics community to now defining "Sacred Hunting" which is his combination of hunting, ancestral tradition, a masculine rite of passage, plant medicine & psychedelics, and spirituality. Struggling with shame and confusion of what it meant to be a man, Mansal found his calling with the sacred art of hunting and desires to share this practice with more men to build confidence, and step into manhood in the path of our ancestors. This is a wide-ranging and interesting philosophical exploration. Enjoy! -Description- I was honored to have the opportunity to speak with Colin Stuckert, CEO and Founder, of Wild Foods, on the podcast this week. As a young man, Colin became interested in health and wellness, but found the typical approach to exercise and dieting, left much to be desired. A year after joining CrossFit he found the Paleo diet, where he began to pay closer attention to what he was eating, its quality and source, while also experimenting in the kitchen with cooking real, whole, foods, and eliminating sugar. In only 30 days time, he had astounding body composition and overall health outcomes. He wondered why more people weren't talking about this. Enter the birth of his obsession with the ancestral approach to eating, and quality, sustainable sourced, food. This obsession would lead him to develop the concept of "First Principles", a lifestyle framework he would later go on to build his entire brand around- Wild Foods. -Episode Details- Colin unpacks the fundamental elements of ancestral living, in the areas of: -Food -Sleep -Technology -Mindset -Movement -Personal Development We also discuss: -The importance of autonomy, and taking personal responsibility for your health and well-being -Why it's critical to surround yourself with people who challenge you to grow and evolve for the better -And how to become less “fragile,” more resilient, and stop living for the approval of others. -Show Notes- What Is Real Food Blog Post- The First Principles of Human Health Video- Connect with Colin: The Ancestral Mind podcast Colin Stuckert's Website Wild Foods Website Apply code WILDCEO at checkout, for 12% off your entire order. I know- this sounds like an extremely unlikely focus for a paleo podcast: you know, eating and living in accordance with our genetic programming, living ancestrally in the manner (as much as possible) in which we evolved. But bear with me…Aside from eating ancestrally (no grains, or at least very little and properly prepared ones like with sour dough ala Weston A. Price), adequate pastured meats, eggs, and dairy along with plenty of vegetables and some fruits like berries or citrus, and sweetening with raw honey and maple syrup- we also need to live according to ancestral principals. Ancient, paleolithic peoples lived in tribes. Such a grouping of people is the healthiest, most natural way for humans to not only survive, but to thrive! We always focus on the survival, and mostly the health related bits of the paleo lifestyle. Like, what can we do to maximize our healthiness and fitness- Perfectly Paleo Exercise, utilizing things like virtual resistance, stretching, walking and running barefoot, and living in contact with the natural world as much as possible. I mean, my podcast and all the other paleo podcasts and written materials go into great detail about all of these things. But the most important thing of all to paleo people was The Grand Narrative! This is the story, the story of the people of the tribe. Think of important stories, like The Odyssey, and Beowulf! Those are wonderful classical examples, but I guarantee you that each and every successful paleolithic tribe had important stories about the heroes of their own tribe that were chanted about the campfires of an evening, pointing out the rare greatness and heroism of their own people! Such stories energized the folk to aspire to greatness, to sacrifice and to aspire to be a mighty warrior, or a beautiful woman with a loving family, or to the elder who counciled with hard-won wisdom both war strategies and planning for the future by provisioning the tribe for a harsh winter…Without such a narrative, people are left rudderless; unable to see a purpose to their survival! But, with a good narrative, a reason to work, and to strive- not only for oneself, or even for the good of your own immediate family- but for the good of the tribe and God himself: this is what truly inspires an individual to greatness. My 4 year old grandson stayed with us for a couple of days this week. He idolizes Batman, and I get it- Batman to him is Odysseus! A great hero, someone with great strength and power, who works tirelessly for the overall good- someone to emulate! I don’t think he could do much better, really. We naturally figure such things out, if not misled, at the ripe old age of FOUR.Think of modern, Neolithic, non paleo people. Those who live in cities and suburbs, buying into the modern tropes and misinformation of our times: They are not concerned with timeless values and the goals of Living Well, Being Good, Protecting Our Tribe from Evil, etc. Etc. No, modern ultracivilized and brainwashed people, cut off from nature, focus on what they have been Misled to Believe by the very enemies of their natural tribe:Climate Change Bad!Orange Man Bad!Borders Bad!All Food Same- Health Only From Doctors and Drugs! Not Arrest Criminals- No Fair!!And the worst of all: Our Tribe Bad! Tribe Privilege!!See the utter nonsense, the brainwashing here? The lack of a people’s grand narrative that would, in contrast, display the utter idiocy of such fake thinking??

Alright everyone, welcome to our new show! I’m Brian Sanders and we’re shooting this live on video from Evolve Healthcare AKA Sapien Medical Headquarters AKA Dr. Gary’s medical clinic in Los Angeles. Please also check out the video version of this in the Food Lies youtube channel. If you’ve arrived here from the Peak Human podcast you’ll know of Dr. Gary Shlifer from the recent episode number 48. He was a smash hit and I got tons of great feedback from listeners. Luckily I already have been recording this new show with him as a co-host.  We’re here today with myself, Dr. Gary, and Kristi Storoschuk who’s also a member of the Sapien team. You may know Kristi from the Food Lies Instagram or Shawn Baker’s Human Performance Outliers podcast. She’s our main writer and helper in all things and she also works with Dr. Dom D’Agostino. If you didn’t catch the episode with Dr. Gary he’s an internal medicine specialist and a co-founder of Sapien.org with myself and Yaniv Fituci. Yaniv is a Hollywood producer (you could say) and is producing the Food Lies film with me. He’ll be joining us in the next episode and as a co-host off and on.  In this episode we talk about a bunch of things that will help people get going with their health journey and simplify a lot of the conflicting info that’s out there. Nutrition is this crazy topic that’s so charged with ideals and personal beliefs and all kinds of conflicting interests like big food companies that have your money in mind, not your health, a bunch of misleading science that’s been done over the last say 60 years, and a whole lot more. It’s no wonder people are so confused about what’s healthy these days and western societies have an insane rate of obesity and chronic disease.  The purpose of this podcast series is to demystify this - give info to people in a simple way that they can incorporate into their life. We’re going to go beyond nutrition into all things that make for a healthy lifestyle including mind, body, and spirit. There’s so much to health beyond what you eat. We’ll get into the Sapien Diet and Sapien Lifestyle a lot. The Sapien Lifestyle is what happens when you put all these things together. It’s how humans can live optimally using ancestral principles and modern science. For more info on Sapien, specifically what foods to eat, and more on what we’re doing, go to sapien.org Thanks everyone, please enjoy the show!   THIS SHOW IS MADES POSSIBLE BY THE COMMUNITY Please support our projects here: Grass finished meat delivered http://NoseToTail.org Preorder the Food Lies film http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Support us on Patreon http://patreon.com/peakhuman   Film site: http://FoodLies.org YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/FoodLies Sapien Movement: http://SapienMovement.com   Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg   Theme music by https://kylewardmusic.com/

http://www.paleojay.comYes, history does repeat itself, over and over. The details are very, very different throughout time, but the gist of it remains the same: Self styled elites, which in ancient days meant Kings and Emperors, Warlords and Dictators- they are constantly trying to control, to micromanage, to tell everyone else how to live, and what to do- endlessly! These fake “leaders” will order us around endlessly, unless we stop them.In Western Civilization, this has been one of the primary concerns, and one of our greatest successes! From the Magna Carta, which outlined the protection of ordinary folk from the dictates of despots, to the Declaration of Independence, from which the founding fathers declared the God-given, inalienable rights of mankind. These were triumphs of Western Civilization, and set the stage for the longest, brightest ascent of human achievement and the reign of peace in all of recorded history. Centuries of a shining light on a hill- that is the history of modern, western civilization, the envy of the world- a civilization where women as well as men, and then other races as well, were afforded all the rights of living in such an advanced and law-abiding place! The Left, fueling ‘liberal’ thinking through the Democratic party through the influence of the failed Marxist so-called philosophy started attacking Western Civilization primarily by making the youth feel ‘guilty’ for the West having done so much better than anyone else. This was a postition founded on envy, and it energizes the left through jeolous hate more than anything else ever could. Now, you may be asking yourself: “How does this fit into a podcast about ancestral, evolutionary lifestyle and health??”Well, it has reached the point where today I heard a supposedly ancestral podcast, at least one that pays lip service to natural health by eating evolutionarily appropriate foods, and living in a way unlike that touted by so-called ‘modern’ western medicine, meaning medical “scientism” left over from the 1970’s, that is still overwhelmingly prevalent today in mainstream medicine…And on this podcast, which I assumed should be one of my allies, a fellow paleo person: I hear a diatribe about Climate Change! If ever one thing was a clarion call to ’scientism’, meaning the assumption of scientific principle with nothing to back it up- that thing would be Global Warming, or Climate Change, or whatever kind of nonsense you want to call it! Voodoo Health perhaps? The Climate does indeed change- I have no argument there! We had numerous Ice Ages, and many other tropical ages; too numerous to mention over the eons. Weather, and climate change happen, and always will happen- the point is, we can’t do anything about it! Well, except to innovate; to come up with warm furs to wear from mammoths we kill, and to plan for the privations of long winters; things like that! That is what fueled the evolutionary changes that resulted in Western Civilization, the crowning achievement that is White European Culture. The envy of the world; copied endlessly, and where everyone wants to live!My point is this: Evolutionary health and Wellness! Living in accordance with our evolution- realizing that grains, health-wise, are a mistake largely. Discussing the problem, realizing that minimizing grains is a great first step; then, going towards proper, Weston A. Price type preparations is probably a postive step, sprouting grains and using sour dough as a leavening agent is a good idea. Including ferm

Sometimes we over-complicate healthy living. Today, author, coach, and nutrition & fitness expert Ben Greenfield, brings insights on how to improve our health based on ancient wisdom. While Ben is known as a “biohacker,” who uses technology and science for peak performance and health, he also has a profound understanding of simple ways that we can mimic the health practices of our ancestors for optimal health. Ben discusses the benefits of grounding, catching sunlight, and cold exposure, for example, that we can incorporate into everyday health habits, wherever we are today. He shows us how to use modern-day technology to benefit our physical and mental health in this post-industrial world. He shares his own personal hacks that he uses to mitigate exposure to radiation when traveling, not to mention his biggest “dial mover” when it comes to his own health and fitness. In the end, he points us to the ultimate combination of health and life span for the most fulfillment and joy. For more on Ben, his resources, and podcasts, visit bengreenfieldfitness.com. There is a modern phenomenon in modern times, at least in the advanced, complex, high intelligence European world: the indiscriminate importing of Low IQ populations into Western European civilization. Think about this from an ancestral perspective: You live in a tribe in northern Europe, but it could be virtually anywhere in the world. (I just use northern Europe to keep it relatable, since my listeners and readers are vastly of that ancestry.) Your tribe, as all tribes are, is incredibly focused on defense of its borders, and maintaining its territory! The world is an incredibly hostile place, and evolution has programmed you to be so focused. Unfortunately, an Evil King has taken over your lands, and oredered you to aquiesce to his evil dictates! (In England and Germany this would be an Evil Queen in the present day.) Dictate number one, crazily: is to take into your tribal lands people who have been your enemies since time immemorial! Those who have fought you for centuries, who hate you, and only want to turn your people into slaves. Let’s call them Muslims. But, in addition- the evil rulers also want you to take into your country, not only your hereditary enemies- but also- LOW IQ PEOPLE FROM COUNTRIES THAT HAVE NO CONCEPT WHATSOEVER OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION- AND, who could not even comprehend it if they did. Parasites. Also, in the ultimate in ridiculousness, your evil rulers have put into place a Welfare System- a system where, unbelievably really- those low intelligence people from starving countries that are brought into you tribal homelands, are given all they need for free! No work necessary, although for the native tribal people, work is mandatory. What the natives produce is taken by force, and given to these low IQ PARASITES, because that is what the evil queens have decreed.Does any of this sound familiar, despite how ridiculous it seems overall??Well welcome to our modern, Western, pathologically altruistic world! For that, unfortunately, is where we are today. The Western, civilized, European world is being doomed by its own pathologically altruistic nature. Let me explain:Eons ago, some humans moved northwards from Africa, mixing with Neanderthals. With light skin, higher intelligence, and other advantages, they set out to survive the northern winters. While their brethren back in Africa evolved physically for the hunt, those who had moved (and mixed) in the north, evolved to plan, think, and thus survive! Those that did not plan, or think- died out. Those that did- lived to breed, have large families, and survive- even in a harsh environment! This is your European tribe. In spite of all odds, over time- they did very well- very well indeed! By evolving to their harsh environment, they learned to not only survive, but to cooperate. For, especially during the Ice Ages, when survival chances were at their worst- it turned out that those tribes, and people who could cooperate, who could feel the stirrings of altruism and compassion were thus enabled to survive the incredibly strenuous and awful hardness of these ages of ice and snow. They learned to cooperate in the hunt, taking down mammoths with primitive weapons of flint attached to wooden spears, and then butchering them with the same flint blades for dispersement to the European tribes that required this nutrition! And this was no small thing, n

My life is a little bit...strange. As an immersive journalist, self-experimenter and self-professed “biohacker”, I do relatively unconventional things to upgrade my body and brain. For example, I have this blood glucose monitor installed in my arm. It monitors my blood sugar 24-7. I wear a cognition-enhancing laser light helmet at work during the day, and stand naked in front of a giant red light panel while I’m replying to emails. I give myself weekly IV’s full of a cocktail of special vitamins. I’ve also had the fat sucked from my back and the marrow from my bones to concentrate my own stem cells, and had surgery to have these cells placed into every joint of my body and mainlined into my bloodstream. I have tens of thousands of dollars of advanced medical technologies housed in my basement. You get the idea. I’m not normal. But as a man who spends much of my life immersed in the modern health and longevity movement, attending anti-aging conferences and researching all the newfangled things people are doing these days to upgrade their bodies, I often survey the landscape of fringe supplements, biohacks, and anti-aging technologies and wonder… ...would our ancestors laugh at us? When it comes to living a long and healthy life, would their ancestral wisdom beat our modern science, hands down? After all, despite our modern infatuation with longevity and optimized bodies and brains, we are not strikingly healthier or longer-living than previous generations. In today's podcast, adapted from my recent TedX Coeur D' Alene Talk, I'll tackle this topic in detail. You'll discover: -Why modern medicine, for all its marvels, may not be all it's cracked up to be...4:10 CDC reports life expectancy has dropped 3 consecutive years. It's a false assertion to assume we'll live significantly longer than previous generations "Life expectancy" is calculated by insurance, mutual fund companies as number of years after retirement, not after birth. We would be seeing many more 100+ year olds; not the case We have a better chance of surviving childhood (disease, etc.) but not necessarily living longer. Our ancestors didn't always live nasty, brutish, short lives -Popular current fads to extend human lifespan...7:43  Vampire therapy, parabiosis (young blood) Ancient Greeks considered to blood a magic elixir Pliny the Elder, Homer, wrote about the healing efficacy of others' blood GDF11, a primary anti-aging proteins activated by young blood transfusion, is increased by oxytocin Stem cells More accessible than in years past My "biological age" dropped from 37 to 20 after my first stem cell transfusion Dietary adjustments to increase/enhance stem cells Food compounds, superfoods: colostrum, aloe vera, etc. Cryopreservation Modern day mummification  Metformin slightly modified version of a compound that was discovered in the French lilac plant (goat's rue) Adverse side effects: Lactic acidosis Mitochondrial disruption Vitamin B12 deficiency Increase risk for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Natural alternatives: Bitters, herbs, wild plants, bitter melon Rapamycin Inhibits excessive activation of immune cells via MTOR Upregulation of cellular cleanup mechanisms called autophagy Increases risk of infectious diseases and diabetes Natural alternatives: spermidine Intermittent fasting Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) Levels markedly decrease with age Natural alternatives: Raw honey Fermented foods Sauna sessions Pau d Arco tea  -Supplements and medicines used by our ancestors...19:25 -Natural ways to enhance our vision...22:45 Ancestors trained their vision; they didn't look at screens all day Plant compounds known to enhance vision: Zeaxanthin Carotenoids (kale, spinach, bell peppers) Innate ability to "see" in the absence of light or even sight -Natural hearing enhancement...24:45 Hunter gatherers were better equipped, physically, with their ears; perhaps because of time spent outdoors attuned to the frequencies of nature Turnip greens, collard greens, parsley, mustard greens, broccoli, etc. shown to decrease risk of hearing loss Adjusting your diet would be far cheaper and less convenient than what some self-experimenting types are doing (ear implants) -The natural "sixth sense" within us to navigate to True North...26:42 We possess a tiny amount of magnetite in our ethmoid bone (located between the eyes in the nasal cavity) Researchers suggest this built-in compass made hunting, migration, etc. possible We have perhaps lost this ancestral skill with the advent of road maps, GPS navigation -Natural ways to enhance our brains...27:30 Walnuts are rich in omega fatty acids, melatonin Lion's mane mushroom Bacopa flower (memory) Green tea (cognition) Psilocybin All of the above have been used for centuries, if not millennia -Natural alternatives to things like photobiomodulation, light therapy, PEMF, etc...29:15 Greeks engaged in "heliotherapy"; sunbathing akin to what we know as photobiomodulation St. John's Wort, chamomile, etc. can be used to ward off seasonal affective disorder -And Much More! PaleoJay's Smoothie Cafe #104 Your Doctor can NOT save you from a bad Lifestyle!! One of the biggest scams there is in this world is that conventional medicine, which is the kind of treatment you can get from an American clinic or hospital can make you WELL! Nothing is further from the truth…a medical doctor of today just means that that person is a member of the biggest, most powerful labor union in history- the American Medical Association. This is a labor union par excellence- it guarantees incredibly high wages for the practitioners in “the Brotherhood” as Malcolm Kendrick calls it, as long as those doctors tow the line, don’t rock the boat, and follow “approved” treatments ONLY- things like chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery only for cancer treatment- nothing else can even be considered, or the doctor doing so can be thrown out of the union- in other words -lose their high priced and time consuming right to practice medicine! Your doctor is actually forbidden to recommend common sense lifestyle and diet changes to actually cure your condition, and is instead forced to recommend expensive pharmaceutical drugs (all of which have side effects, often worse than the disease!), and surgeries only. None of these options do any thing at all to address your disease or condition- they only mask the symptoms so you might feel a little better. You will go home with your expensive prescriptions for drugs that make BILLIONS of dollars for the pharmaceutical companies annually, and billions of dollars for the medical clinic that prescribed them- all without curing your condition in the slightest. You see, the pharmaceutical companies fund most of the research, and bankroll the medical colleges where the future M.D’s train. They have a mutually beneficial relationship- the doctors recommend their products; in fact insist the patient use these products, and then everyone makes lots and lots of money… except YOU. You are left sick, with endless pills and/or painful and damaging surgeries to endure, and are now a drug addict! Even though your drugs are LEGAL, they are still usually endlessly necessary and actually addicting once you start, and hugely expensive- and, even though your medical insurance (if you have it) will mask the true costs since you only need a co-pay, rest assured that the ultimate cost is there, it is huge, and you are paying it through your other many taxes that are set to continue rising forever! And let’s talk side effects: All drugs have side effects! This is often glossed over, but if you ever pay attention to the MANY drug commercials on the television all day long, listen to the potential side effects of the most popular ones, the ones they recite rapidly while showing attractive, loving couples dancing, walking on pristine beaches, and playing with laughing children and romping dogs: Here are the side effects of the Statin drugs, which are among the MOST prescribed drugs on earth! Liver function, muscle wasting and pain, possible heart attack risk, increased side effects with any other drug you might be taking, depression and irritability, headaches, joint pain, and abdominal pain, tingling, numbness and burning, sleep problems, sexual function problems, dizziness and a sense of detachment. Additionally, people have mentioned experiencing swelling, shortness of breath, vision changes, changes in temperature regulation, weight change, hunger, breast enlargement, blood sugar changes, dry skin, rashes, blood pressure changes, nausea, upset stomach, bleeding, and ringing in ears or other noises. In addition, Statin drugs, which include Crestor, lipitor, and several other brand names tend to deplete CO q10, which is a vital substance manufactured by your body to produce cell growth and maintenance in every cell in your body- as you grow older, the supply lessens, and it can cause your heart to malfunction, and cause brain and cognition problems as well! And all of those are

The number one reason that people are not healthy is not because they don’t know what to do, or how to do it. Sure, knowing how to properly exercise is crucial, and knowing what you should eat (and not eat!) to be healthy is as well- so, if you don’t know how to do either one, study up. Read on www.paleojay.com on both subjects, and get my ebook on Perfectly Paleo Exercise, complete with all the links you need to understand how to exercise naturally, ancestrally, and completely. This won’t take all that long, and then you will know what to eat, and how to properly exercise. Of course, you could study both subjects for the rest of your life and learn new things continually. But, the basics are always the same! Real food, not processed man-made crap, pastured meats and dairy, wild seafood. Get rid of grains in your diet, and maximize your sleep to at least 8 hours per night. Cultivate your “tribe” of friends, family, church members, work friends, neighbors. Exercise daily, and experience nature as well on a daily basis. But, now that you know what to do- what is the obstacle? I’m sure you know it: it is doing it, you have to follow through. Walk the walk, not merely talk the talk! This is what is really hard for folks to do. Knowledge is indeed power- but only if you actually do what you know you should be doing! So, you need to make health a habit! And so, for the next few weeks, I want you to prioritize your health habits. Make sure to sleep 8 hours per night, and then to exercise the next morning. Do this every single day for 21 days! This is the minimum amount of time most people need to create a new habit. You will find if you get the sleep you need, and have the discipline to exercise each and every morning, eating a proper paleo diet will just seem natural, since you are so conscious of the health of your body during this time. So really do it- sleep and wake with natural exercise in front of the TV waiting for you each morning, to help you to gradually awaken your body and mind, stretching and invigorating your entire body in a methodical, pleasant way. I guarantee that, at the end of three weeks, or 21 days, you will have become addicted to feeling great. Or at least semi-addicted! For it turns out that 21 days is the minimum time needed to create a habit in your life. To create a rock-solid, hard core near positive addiction to health and exercise it takes 66 days! At this point, you will have created a lifelong habit that will be a part of your very being, something that you will no longer be able to imagine living without. For instance, I have had three days where I have been unable to exercise due to family commitments, and my sleep was cut short as well. My diet stayed good, but not ideal for the same three days. Was I tempted to stay “off training” after these days were over? On the contrary, daily training is so much a part of my life, that the first thing I did this morning after waking was to go downstairs and train. I did my default workout, which includes virtual resistance training, flexing while rebounding, stretching on the mat over my whole body, and isometrics. I even do self resisted neck and face exercises, and massage my feet and otherwise work my grip strength and wrists. And I’ll tell you, as I went through that workout it was as if I was slowly recovering my health, that vibrant feeling of wellness that is so much a part of me! I was instantly back in the habit of exercise and healthy living, despite me brief break. And once you develop the true habit of health, you will be the same- a day without exercise is always possible to you, but if you have any real choice you will never choose it! You know from long experience that health is addictive, in a completely positive sense. You will hate to miss exercise, just as you will learn to be disgusted by bad food choices! In fact, I plan to go downstairs after this, and do a brief 15 minu
