Over the past three decades, A.J. Croce has established his reputation as a piano player and vocal stylist who pulls from a host of musical traditions and anti-heroes — part New Orleans, part juke joint, part soul. From his 10 studio albums, it's clear that he holds an abiding love for all types of musical genres: Blues, Soul, Pop, Jazz, and Rock n' Roll. A virtuosic piano player, Croce toured with B.B. King and Ray Charles before reaching the age of 21, and over his career, he has performed with a wide range of musicians, from Willie Nelson to the Neville Brothers, to Béla Fleck and Ry Cooder. A.J. has also co-written songs with such formidable tunesmiths as Leon Russell, Dan Penn, Robert Earl Keen, and multi-Grammy winner Gary Nicholson. His albums have all charted on an impressive array of charts: Top 40, Blues, Americana, Jazz, College, and Radio 1. The Nashville-based singer/songwriter has landed 22 singles on a variety of Top 20 charts.  His songwriting and style has evolved from Jazz & Blues on his debut and sophomore albums, to the roots-rock of the more recent collaborative recordings like Cantos with Ben Harper, Twelve Tales with Allen Toussaint, and Just Like Medicine with Vince Gill. He recently toured with his show "Croce Plays Croce" where he paid tribute to his father, singer/songwriter Jim Croce.

Episode 310: It would be hard to name any songwriter in Nashville's long history whose work has been recorded by more stars across more genres of music than Gary Nicholson. The Texas native came to Nashville in 1980 after stints in Ft. Worth and Los Angeles, and not only did he amass an impressive string of country music hits with Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, and more, he became Music City's go-to soul and R&B man, conjuring songs for Bonnie Raitt, Etta James, BB King, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and even Ringo Starr. Now at 74 the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer has turned his own performing/recording life to songs of conscience and social protest, as on his new album Common Sense.

Serena Ittoo, a singer-songwriter from Enfield, UK, uses her music to explore and express the emotions we all experience in our daily lives. Her emphasis on authenticity highlights the importance of embracing our unique selves, both in her music and in her interactions with others. Her debut single, “Nature Foreseen” is a reflection and ode to anyone who has felt that they are not worthy, good enough or accepted by someone they truly love. Serena shares, “Although they love this person unconditionally, the song faces such vulnerable emotions of what it feels like to not feel accepted/judged over things you can't control.” The song shows that the protagonist deeply loves this person and would do anything for the person to feel safe, valued and loved purely; however, the song also shows that this isn't really reciprocated openly and purely the other way around. The other person focuses on what the protagonist can't control, doesn't have - this is why they push them away and the protagonist is left feeling very deflated and low-self-worth. Serena worked in collaboration with Grammy award-winning music Producer/Engineer Aamir Yaqub (Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Sia) and Marcus Maschwitz (John Legend, Katy Perry, Years and Years, The 1975) on her up and coming official music video. “Nature Foreseen” marks the start of Serena's profound journey through the tapestry of human emotions, painting a vivid sonic landscape that resonates with hearts worldwide. Deep and emotive, “Nature Foreseen” emanates an ethereal quality, with passionate, soulful vocals and lyrics packed with imagery, analogies and metaphors. In addition to her musical career, Serena is a Licensed Master NLP Practitioner and Life Coach, working to help others reach their full potential. Working in this field, Serena wanted “Nature Foreseen” to end powerfully in that the protagonist takes back their power and chooses to focus on their own worth and self-love. She explains, “It is so easy to lose ourselves and forget our worth when we love someone deeply, however in situations where they don't love you with an open heart freely, it can lead you to doubt everything good about yourself. It reminds us that we need to take ownership of loving ourselves and not rely on other people to do this for us.” Her commitment to her craft has opened doors to amazing opportunities, such as writing and performing an original song at Sir Paul McCartney's childhood home. Serena has also collaborated with renowned songwriters like Grammy winner Gary Nicholson and Grammy nominee Beth Neilson Chapman in Texas. Dive into the world of Serena Ittoo's music and discover her relatable melodies that connect listeners across language and cultural boundaries. Gary Nicholson is a two-time Grammy winning producer and member of the Texas Heritage Songwriter Hall of Fame. He has had more than 500 recordings of his songs released. His songs span multiple genres including country, rock, blues, folk, bluegrass and pop. After growing up near Dallas and playing in seedy bars in Fort Worth, Texas, he went off to North Texas State University to play music. After an evening partying with the legendary Gram Parsons of the Flying Burrito Brothers following a gig at North Texas, he was lured to Los Angeles by Gram and met up with his college buddies Don Henley and Jim Ed Norman. This was the early 70s heyday of the Laurel Canyon Hollywood singer songwriter boom and the guitar playing and songwriting bug bit Gary. His songs have been recorded by an insanely long list of artists which includes Garth Brooks, BB King, John Prine, Ringo Star, Waylon Jennings, Emmy Lou Harris, Vince Gill, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Robert Plant, Reba McEntire and a list that goes on. His 50 year friendship and collaboration with Delbert McClinton produced over 50 recorded songs and several award winning records. An amazingly kind and humble man who is overflowing with talent, you may not know Gary Nicholson but you have heard his songs.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/back-story-song/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The Fightin' Side of Me". THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Today’s episode features a true Texas Songwriting Legend: Ray Wylie Hubbard. For those who follow Texas and Red Dirt Music you are almost certainly familiar with Ray.  He’s a legend in the scene and tons of artists have covered his material.  Many artists look at their chance just to co-write with Ray as a pinnacle in their careers. Known for his bar-room sing-along anthem, Red Neck Mother, Ray started gaining notoriety in the 70’s when Jerry Jeff Walker made the tune a main-stay for dark, smoky honky-tonks.  Then, over the years he also became known for penning other great signature songs like “Snake Farm”, recorded by podcast alum Paul Thorn, as well as “I Wanna Rock n Roll” recorded by Red Dirt legends in their own right, Cross Canadian Ragweed. One of my favorite songs that pays homage to Ray is the song “Good One Comin On” recorded by Blackberry Smoke and Trent Wilmon, and written by David Lee Murphy, Gary Nicholson, and Lee Roy Parnell. We get into Ray’s backstory in the episode and he takes us all the way from his start during the Cowboy/Hippie movement in Austin revolving around the Armidillo World Headquarters, us to his most recent projects featuring performances with names like Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Don Was, Chris Robinson and Ashley McBryde. If you haven’t checked out the YouTube video of the song “Bad Trick” here’s the LINK. I know Carly and I were both honored to have this chance to interview Ray. Gary Nicholson is a #1 hit songwriter, two time Grammy winning producer, recording artist, with over 500 of his songs recorded by artists as diverse as BB King, Garth Brooks, Etta James, and Ringo Starr to name a few.  He can also be “Whitey Johnson,” his bluesman alter ego, or a part of the Fortunate Sons rock band.  He and I will chat about his incredible career and new album, Whitey Johnson. Markey Blue is led by Markey and Ric Latina out of Nashville, TN  Markey's career began as a showgirl in Las Vegas and Ric has toured with Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams III and Gary Puckett among others before they joined together to put this band in motion. Their debut album, Hey Hey features Steve Cropper and is just great.  I wil chat with them about their lives and careers and where Markey Blue is heading.  Devon Allman will join me.  He has a new solo album entitled ragged & dirty and we will discuss the music on that album, his work with Royal Southern Brotherhood, the charities he supports and even his Hot Sauce!  I am excited to be able to speak with Devon and discuss his journey, which was influenced more by The Beatles and Kiss more than from his dad.  This should be fun! Nathan James first Sat On The Couch back on January of 2012 to be a part of the IBC Preview shows.  He now has a new album out that is actually two albums, Hear Me Calling (Acoustic solo) and Natural Born That Way (Electric band) which includes 4 songs done in each style.  I'll chat with Nathan about what has been going on in his life and career and we'll check out songs from each album.
