How To Write One Song“.

Lex mentions Alternative Country for the second straight episode, but it's not why he turned down a $30 offer.
After getting flipped off and offered trades, Lex still isn't asked what Alternative Country is.
(Erstausstrahlung 12.2.2016)

Keys to the Kingdom, is an anthology of 10 songs that spans the roots of American Rock ‘n' Roll, Blues, and Alternative Country. His songs rock with a sense of soulful urgency, powered by his visceral vocals and incendiary guitar work. Pre-production on the album was done by Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty, Average White Band) and long-time Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. The sessions were recorded over a period of five beautiful days in the High Mojave Desert at Dave Catching's Rancho De La Luna Studio in Joshua Tree, California. Kenneth (lead guitar and vocals) is joined by indie soul brothers Chris Cano on drums and Brandon Owens on bass. Keys to the Kingdom is pure modern Southern Rock' ‘n Roll with a side of Mojave Desert Mojo. It hits hard from the first track to the last. “I wrote these songs while living in Hollywood and Malibu over the last five years,” says Kenneth Brian. “They are heavily influenced by my experiences in Southern California.”

Over the course of nearly three years, we at Americana podcast have spoken with a wonderful collective of artists and industry professionals alike about the workings in and of this ever expanding umbrella of music we lovingly refer to as Americana music. Parts of that discussion have at times touched on its history- but we have never really broached the subject of its early days and what that entailed. And who exactly was there at the beginning. With that in mind, we've decided to shake it up a bit and welcome longstanding Americana advocate and friend Rob Bleetstein. Bleetstein in casual circles, is a music lover. A long time ticket collecting, road junkie, band following fan if there ever was one. Which all tracks for an original deadhead mind you- but he's not someone stuck completely in the past either. Driven by just the desire to hear good music- there isn't an artist old or young on the scene that he seemingly doesn't already know about. And if you happen to somehow introduce him to someone he hasn't heard of- he'll send you what can only be described as an essay or a review of his thoughts on their first two records in addition to the direction their heading with their next one. You can't beat him. Professionally, Bleestein's credentials range from publicist, archivist, and currently program director of Pearl Jam Radio on Sirius XM. What he is to Americana as a genre though… well he was one of the early, if not original adopters of the term. From when he worked at Gavin magazine in the 90's. One of the original coiners of the description “Americana”. Rob Bleetstein is not only a music lover- but a true music shaper. So Join us as our host Robert Earl Keen speaks with Rob Bleestetin about the early days of Americana, his experiences as a long-time music lover, his contributions, and what's on the horizon of the genre

Jim and Mike interview JENNY AND KELLY from JENNY DONT AND THE SPURS! (Portland, Oregon alternative country band) ABOUT JENNY DONT AND THE SPURS: Since their inception in 2012, the Spurs have kept a relentless schedule of recording, playing locally, and touring. After nearly 500 live appearances in almost a dozen countries, and with a slew of albums and singles to their name, Jenny Don't And The Spurs are just getting warmed up. The Spurs were founded one cold, winter's evening by Jenny and Kelly. Jenny had been fronting her own band, DON'T, for some time, as well as playing the occasional solo acoustic set here and there. Kelly, who had been in a slew of Portland punk bands since the 80's, and who had spent the previous several years balancing a grueling touring schedule playing drums with the garage rock trio PIERCED ARROWS and bass with Portland punk-rock destroyers P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S., and wanted to switch gears a bit. After the concept of forming a raw, real, and back-to-the-roots country band had taken hold, it wasn't long before the couple was rehearsing a seminal set of standards by such influential early country crooners and outlaws like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Ernest Tubb, and Hank Sr., as well as a sprinkling of originals. It was only a few weeks later that Kelly's bandmates Fred and Toody Cole got wind of the developing musical project that was taking form in Jenny and Kelly's kitchen and decided to call their bluff by giving them an unsolicited support slot on an upcoming show featuring the Cole's own solo two-piece act. Not having anticipated such a high-profile live appearance as a first live outing, and feeling like the guitar-and-bass-only lineup that the band had started life as was lacking something on the rhythm end of things, they decided to ask their friend Sam Henry to join them on drums. Sam, who in addition to being Jenny's bandmate in DON'T and sometimes solo-set-collaborator, had already had a long, well respected career as one of Portland's best drummers, having played with such first-generation punk bands as the Wipers, The Rats and Napalm Beach. After a couple of weeks of practice, the debut live appearance of the band went off without a hitch and the core lineup of Jenny Don't And The Spurs was born. The trio of Jenny, Kelly, and Sam existed in this form for the first year-an-a-half or so of the band's existence, playing whatever local venue would take them – bars, clubs, porches, basements, backyards, and even a bookstore. This worked well for a while, and occasionally the Spurs would enlist talent from a pool of several friends to sit in on lead guitar or lap steel. The addition of a second guitar rounded out the sound of the band to the point where Jenny and Co. decided to make it a permanent part of the band's lineup. After a couple of false starts and a bit of difficulty finding a fourth member who could commit to the Spur's sometimes grueling touring schedule, the incredible Christopher March became a member of the family in early 2017. Christopher brought with him a wealth of talent and live gig experience, having spent years playing on the Northwest Country, Rockabilly, and Honky-Tonk circuit. Now, with several West Coast and North American tours, as well as three European tours and hundreds of local shows under their tooled-leather Western belts, the Spurs are gearing up for the release of their third full-length studio album. The Spurs are a musical force to be reckoned with, the intensity and energy of their live set, and dazzling Western outfits handmade by Jenny herself, the band is a must-see for anyone who enjoys spirited garage-infused country music played with sincerity and raw conviction.

Back Row Baptists join us in the studio! ... and the studio was packed! “People tend to label us Alternative Country and/or Outlaw Country,” says front man Chris Porter. “We are Outlaw Gospel. Don’t let the name fool you. Our music is not religious. But it is Gospel all the same. We make real music for real people.” These guys (and gals) are touring through town from Birmingham, AL and they are label-mates with our previous guests Drivin N Cryin. They are currently promoting their new CD, "Broken Hearts and Bad Decisions". This is good-time shout-along music. Enjoy! http://backrowbaptists.com/
First podcast of the New Year! Are you as excited as we are? You should be! This time around we have the boys from The Fox Hunt from West Virginia. Well, we don't have them right this moment, but we had them for awhile when they came through town to play a show with our friends The Magpies. Alas, much to our dismay, we had to release them back into the wild. But before we did, we got a podcast chock-full of fantastic old-timey music out of them. The Fox Hunt is made up of John Miller, Ben Townsend and Matts Klein and Metz. They have one album out, available on CD Baby with a few more slated for release throughout the year, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the music in the podcast and try and forgive our less than sparkling conversational skills. Apparently, too much alcohol and too little sleep makes us less than brilliant. And check the boys out at: http://www.myspace.com/lefoxhunt
