In this special episode of the Pyllon Ultra Pod, I sit down with Pyllon coach John Connolly and long-time creative collaborator (and pal) Gavin Bussey, just ahead of the release of A Run Through Darkness — the film documenting my 3,000km run across New Zealand. We talk about the discomfort of putting something so personal out into the world, the role of Alice's energy in keeping the whole thing moving, and the quiet moments of vulnerability that came not just during the run, but in shaping the story afterward. There's plenty of west coast banter, swearing, some honesty about fear, doubt and storytelling — and the formal proposal of a new XP ritual involving frostbitten toes and Yukon tradition that you probably just have to hear to believe. This one's real. It's not polished. And I'm proud of that.

On the Sunday just before the release of this podcast, I ran a 10k running race. I have never liked running, or been very good at it, but I learned a lot through training for this race, and to my surprise I ended up actually quite enjoying it. The race went well - I got a PB by 2 mins and 48 seconds on my one previous 10k event - and it has now inspired me to sign up for my first ever duathlon. So much more to learn and improve on in training for that! In this episode I wanted to share the valuable tips and lessons I picked up from trying to get better at running, including: the benefits (to injury prevention, speed, increased motivation, and enjoyment of sessions) of having a good pair of running shoes how to warm up for a run tips on posture and technique to increase speed and reduce risk of injury the best cadence to run at the surprising amount of difference your arms can make to your running speed different types of running sessions to improve speed and fitness some of the best strength training exercises to help you run better how to fuel your body for regular exercise how to recover well If you find it helpful, please share, rate or review the podcast to help me reach more people - I really appreciate it. Welcome to episode 98 of the Women's Running Podcast. I'm your host Esther Newman and she's your co-host, that's Holly Taylor. We recorded this on that super hot Friday a week or so ago, so you'll have to forgive us for kicking off proceedings by discussing underboob sweat and cold showers. This week we have a special guest on the show, Anna Harding from The Running Channel, who we've had on before, along with a very special appearance by Ralphie the interrupting dog. I wanted to get her on again because she has run many, many marathons. I'm kicking off my London Marathon training, Holly's kicking off her half marathon training, and I suspect a number of you are in the same boat (or at least I hope so!). I'm having collywobbles about my training – I need tips about how to ramp up, and good things to do mid-week, and what I shouldn't be doing. I wanted to pick Anna's brains about what she's learnt in the course of all her training – and what I can learn from her. I ask her about her mistakes, and what a training plan should look like for someone like me. We also talk about half marathon training, and get her practical advice on what we should be doing, how often, and how far. So we're doing all that, and we have a special treat for her at the end as we invite her on as our very first proper guest on the Women's Running Quiz! And we're not going to stop doing this, by the way, until we've had actual complaints, and so far you've all been very silent on the matter, so we're going to Quiz Away!If you like this podcast, you will love Women's Running magazine. Welcome to Episode 63 of the Women's Running Podcast. This is one of our hybrid episodes – it's part workshop chat with me and Holly, and part chat with one of our favourite people to give us some advice. Our expert this week is the very lovely Anna Harding from the Running Channel. She's been on here before – way back in the mists of time in episode 8. Check that out to hear all about how she started running in the first place, and her journey from non-runner to running expert. In this episode it's a game of two halves. I wanted to talk to her about her recent efforts to achieve a Boston Qualifying time, which was documented on the Running Channel – links to that are in the show notes, you must watch it. She definitely went on one of those journeys we talk about here so often, but has survived to tell the tale, and here she is to tell us all about it. And here's a treat for you, I've asked Anna to tell us all about it in the January issue of Women's Running, so remember to pick up that issue, when it's out just before Christmas to read her story in full. It's a perfect stocking filler fyi.And then Holly and I want to pick her brains about winter running and how we motivate ourselves to get out there – and her tips here are nothing short of genius. Pants on the radiator for the win. This, and more super top tips are right this way. Just to forewarn you, Anna has a very beautiful dog called Ralph (who has his own Insta page by the way), who introduces himself to us fairly early on, and enjoys keeping us on our toes - I decided to keep all his little barks in because he's a beauty and deserves our support and affection.Watch Anna's attempt to Boston Qualify – be warned, it's a weeper.Follow Anna and Ralph! Please rate and review us on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to your podcasts – these reviews mean the WORLD to us, and really help us to keep this podcast going. And as we're firm friends now, so I think you should join us. If you become a member of Women's Running right now, you'll get a FREE base layer from Zerofit, worth £40. Welcome to your weekly dose of running motivation. Today's guest is Anna Harding from The Running Channel. Back from a busy few days filming with team in the Scottish Mountains, Anna was happy to kick back, chill out, and talk all things running! After a recent stint on the injury bench due to a calf tear, Anna is now well and truly on the comeback trail and has a lofty goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon in her sights (sub 3hrs 30mins). Anna runs to challenge herself, look after her mental health, and she loves the adventure of preparing for ambitious goals. Welcome to your weekly dose of running motivation. Today's guest is Kate Carter - lifestyle editor for the Guardian, a presenter on The Running Channel, AND holder of the World Record for…. wait for it….. 'Fastest female marathon runner in an animal costume'! As impressive as this feat is, Kate has had her fair share of disappointments and setbacks. Namely missing out on a sub 3hr marathon by a matter of seconds, and although that race resulted in her being effectively ‘carried across the line', it did result in a huge PB, and she has since achieved her sub 3 badge. #AskJake: Each week, we'll take one of your questions and Jake will answer it. Today, we're talking about noisy water bottles! See the full show notes & resources here: http://runningwithjake.com/plodcast

Today’s guest, Carl Orme is another runner, a father to 4 children, a veteran and fundraiser. Carl raised £11k in 2020!! You may well know Carl from the online running community - someone who is incredibly kind and supportive of others, you may well be friends with Carl already, or perhaps you remember the incredible challenges he did in 2020 to raise money for charity inlcluding climbing 3,403 flights of stairs to climb mount Everest virtually, or the fortnight later when he completed 3,500 laps of the drive to complete a marathon, or even the 10 Marathons in 10 Days raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness to round off 20 Marathons over the year of 2020. Oh and there was an injury thrown into the mix before the 10 in 10 - a prolapsed disc in July! Carl was recently awarded runner-up in The Running Channel’s Leading by Example 2021! So I also want to say a massive congratulations to Carl!
The journalist, runner and presenter at the Running Channel explains why she's switched her focus from the marathon to the 5K – and why now is the perfect time to do the same. Kate also talks about her favourite 5K workouts and the importance of strength and conditioning. We also have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make runners seen, and heard, in the Highway Code. We've been on a lil' hiatus but The Start Line Girls are back with a special edition to kick off the start of Black History Month for the UK. Following the successes experienced by our running crew @emancipatedruncrew over the summer, namely being featured in The Running Channel, working with @blackcrewsunited in organising The Carnival Run 2020 (running the route of the Notting Hill Carnival with flags, whistles, speakers), and Dee and Jules being featured in the Telegraph's Women's Supplement we thought we couldn't top all this. That is until Tes Sobomin-Marshall, founder of @runningnerds and founder and Race Director of The Race Unity Collective agreed to guest on our podcast! Tes is a true force of nature and has incredibly been able to bring forth her vision of creating a long distance race for African-Americans where, for once, they are in the majority. The Race was not created to rectify the injustice of lack of representation and exclusion, but rather to celebrate black excellence through running! The Race UC takes place in Atlanta and is the largest endurance race for African Americans and People of Colour. Its first year, 2018, saw over 1,400 people taking part - 89% of which were African-American/people of colour and it has rapidly become a destination for Black and minority runners all across the US.The Race Pivot Edition 2020, takes place on 3rd October 2020 and due to Covid-19 is a virtual and digital experience this year. We speak to Tes about how she started this passionate endeavour, how she supports local black communities through The Race, how she has been able to make a career out of being a Race Director, and what her hopes and dreams are for the future. We wanna be like Tes!One thing is for sure - God willing, and provided Covid-19 is a distant memory, The Start Line Girls, together with the Emancipated Run Crew will be making our pilgrimage to Atlanta for The Race UC 2021! We cannot wait!! Until then, head to theraceuc.com to register for The Race Pivot Edition 2020 - but be quick - spaces are going fast!Special shout out to India and Tommy from The Running Duo Podcast for inviting The Start Line alongside some other brilliant podcasts - The Last Tenth, the RaceMob Podcast and Behind The Wheel Podcast - to participate in the Speaker Series going out during The Race Pivot Virtual Expo (and of course to Tes for making sure we were included on the panel. We'd love to hear from you, so please follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook by searching for @thestartlinepod and subscribe to the show on your favourite podcast provider or at http://www.thestartlinepod.com! In this episode, Esther Newman, editor of Women's Running, speaks to Anna Harding, the founder of the Running Channel. Anna has gone from non-runner to running expert in a ludicrously quick time. Just a few years ago, she made the leap from couch to marathon, and hasn't stopped running since. She talks to us here about starting the Running Channel, and supporting a community that she truly loves, as well as how an ex boyfriend prompted her to start running in the first place (by telling her that she couldn't). She talks about running goals, strength training during lockdown, her love of trail running and hating tempo sessions. She also talks openly about how the trolls in the comments section affected her mental health, and how she has won that personal battle. Find out this, her top tips for ultra recovery (it involves a paddling pool) and what's in store next for Anna and the Running Channel right here.

Andy Baddeley ran internationally for Great Britain for over a decade in predominately the 1500m event. He made every major Championship final during his career and talks about his greatest achievement being winning the legendary 'Dream Mile' in Oslo. Andy is also the world record holder of everyone's favourite race, Park Run. Since retiring Andy has co-founded the hugely successful Youtube Channel, The Running Channel, which now gets over 1 millions views per month.
After last episode's round table discussion around why there is a reluctance in the UK and United States to talk about race, The Start Line Girls invite friends Tasha Thompson (@blackgirlsdorunuk) and Lara-Lee Green to discuss what happens when you do you break the silence to discuss race in what may be seen as traditionally white spaces - Tasha in the social pages of Runner's World, and Lara-Lee in a Black Voices campaign launched by ITV. The Start Line Girls also share their experiences after Emancipated Run Crew were featured on The Running Channel, and Jules's involvement in the ITV Black Voices campaign.Tasha and Lara-Lee talk about how it feels to be at the receiving end of negative comments, which largely contained demands for issues of race to be left out of running and off TV and many of which completely refused to acknowledge the existence of racism in the UK. They also discuss the importance of allies, the entrance of brands in the racial debate and their hopes for the future. In the wake of the Black Live Matters demonstrations which erupted across the world following the killing of George Floyd, and in the shadow of the earlier deaths of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, negative reactions to discussion around race simply serve to demonstrate why we must continue to break the silence on issues concerning race and racial injustice - as unless we shine a light on these issues they will continue to hide in plain sight within our society. You can find out more about the ITV Black Voices Campaign by visiting the website here, where you can watch both Lara-Lee and Jules's videos, and you can follow BlackGirlsDoRunUK on instagram by searching for @blackgirlsdorunuk.
