Returning to albumtoalbum for a long-overdue reunion is renowned actor, occasional Dalek and author of The Complete David Bowie, Nicholas Pegg. Nick's an old friend of the podcast and has tackled some of David Bowie's most acclaimed albums in previous episodes - as well as exploring entire eras (our 198More series of chats take an overview of Bowie's singles, soundtracks and various off-extramural activities 1981 - 1989). Now, he's back to tackle one of the most challenging artefacts in the Bowie oeuvre - the much-maligned 1984 album Tonight. A rag-tag bag of semi-sentient cover versions, marimbas, an absolutely bracingly brilliant long-form promo video (very 1984) a couple of superb Bowie evergreens, some blue-and-brown-eyed reggae and uncharacteristically insipid production, Tonight might not be the worst album of 1984, but it fell short of what long time Bowie fans had come to expect. Clearly geared to what Bowie assumed were his new Let's Dance-era fans, the album was recorded almost straight after the massive Serious Moonlight tour, without the satisfying thwack that conceptual cohesion and creative conviction characterising Bowie's best work to date. Here, Bowie opted to work with a young British producer, Derek Bramble, who had little awareness of Bowie's work. As Nick says in this episode, Bramble's lack of public profile might have appealed to Bowie, after the megawatt presence of Nile Rogers on Let's Dance. Fair enough. But then, getting happening, in-demand producer, most recently with The Police, Hugh Padgham on board, in the junior role of engineer, wasn't Bowie's brightest idea. In this episode, we kick off by looking back at the lead-up to the album's recording (in Canada), a cast of characters including Derek Bramble, Hugh Padgham, Iggy Pop and Carlos Alomar and the album's first three tracks - Loving The Alien, Don't Look Down and the unforgettable cover version of the Beach Boys' God Only Knows. With thanks to Nicholas Pegg, and Leah Kardos for the background music. During the conversation, we have references from Chris O'Leary, Charles Shaar Murray and that Bowie resource par excellence, bowiebible.com
T'as vu ?

Back in 1974, Earl Slick was a 22-year old jobbing session guitarist fast developing a reputation for his supple, searing style and versatility in all idioms. Hired by Bowie to join his Diamond Dogs tour, Slick then had to suddenly pivot from apocalypto-rock to sleek Philly soul at a moment's notice - but acquitted himself so well, he was invited to play on tracks destined for Young Americans before forming the core band, alongside Carlos Alomar, Dennis Davis, George Murray and Roy Bittan to cut the extraordinary Station to Station, in LA, during October 1975. Bringing his charismatic flair to the sessions, Slick rose each time to Bowie's demands for an esoteric sonic palette, turning in one bravura performance after another despite, by his own admission, almost matching Bowie's ridiculous drug consumption levels at the time. Although his boss's directions could be at times gnomic - Bowie instructed him on one occasion to simply play a Chuck Berry riff repeatedly throughout a track - the pair sparked off each other, forging a deep bond. Despite a contretemps between Bowie's management and Slick at the end of the sessions, Earl returned to the Bowie band in 1983 for Serious Moonlight and then again during the early 2000s, when he became again, a key member of the group, up to The Next Day. Today, Station to Station stands out as one of Bowie's finest records, the pivot from Young Americans' funk and soul to the electronic abstractions and experimental textures which would emerge fully with Low. Despite the frenzied sessions, the album's six tracks are each mini-masterpieces. In this episode, the first of two devoted to the album, we take a leisurely stroll down memory lane and begin with Earl's reminiscences of pre-Beatles America, his first audition for Bowie and Visconti, bafflement at the Philly soul era, meeting and forgetting (and then meeting again) John Lennon, and the intense sessions that made up the first side of Station to Station. Thanks to Earl, Oliver and of course the regal Tank for all their time and help in assembling this episode and as ever, please do let me know what you think of our chat and share this podcast far and wide! David Bowie's Labour Day Weekend concert in 1983 at Toronto's CNE Stadium remains the most anticipated and exciting show I've ever attended. He was on his global Serious Moonlight tour for his worldwide smash hit album, Let's Dance, with the great Rough Trade opening the show and warming up the troops. I discuss the show itself in Part 2—(EP 29b, no.22b) Let's Dance: David Bowie with Rough Trade, CNE Stadium, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Saturday September 3, 1983. First, however, in this prelude episode, I not only take an in-depth journey through his recording career from 1964's “Liza Jane” through 1983's Let's Dance but also through the 1970s themselves. In particular, I examine the era's rock music and how it intertwined socio-culturally throughout the decade as marginalized communities broke through and asserted themselves; Bowie's influence on the ‘70s; and his seismic impact on me and many other outsiders during this era. Tune in for radio oddities, shag rugs, shag haircuts, satin flares, platform shoes, and personal liberation. Next On Stage –> This is the big one! THE ultimate! The single most anticipated show I ever attended, when I—along with my co-hort Miss Bennies—and 60,000 other fans, all of whom who were going Absolutely Freakin' Bananas, moseyed on down to a packed CNE Exhibition Stadium during a swelting Labour Day weekend in 1983, for David Bowie. He was on his global Serious Moonlight tour for his worldwide smash hit album, Let's Dance, with the great ROUGH TRADE opening the show and warming up the troops. On the exact same weekend a year earlier, I had seen The Clash at this same venue (EP 18). Now I was back and seeing an even more hotly anticipated show. And he surpassed my expectations.Join me in returning back to this CNE show on that gorgeous Labour Day weekend in 1983—ending one of the most memorable summers of my young life with an unforgettable climax. Tune in for being caught up in the rush of crushing crowds, Hamlet references, bamboo steamers among the Bowie masses, and the most exciting show of my life. Ten days after the final Police Picnic in Toronto at the massive CNE Exhibition Stadium, I took in a more intimate, but hotly anticipated, show by the legendary Marianne Faithfull. The by-then gravel-voiced ‘60s pop icon and former Jagger paramour was in the final throes of a triumphant, early ‘80s comeback. She was undertaking her first-ever tour of Canada, where her records had performed very well, conveniently beginning her tour at my local watering hole here in the Forest City. The episode also features a four-minute interview that I did with Marianne six years after this gig, in 1989. Tune in for thigh-slappin' rhythms, shitfaced patrons, contented smiles and … dangerous acquaintances. Next On Stage –> This is the big one! THE ultimate! The single most anticipated show I ever attended, when I—along with my co-hort Miss Bennies—and 60,000 other fans, all of whom going Absolutely Freakin' Bananas, moseyed on down to a packed CNE Exhibition Stadium on the Sunday night of a swelting Labour Day weekend in 1983, for DAVID BOWIE, on his Serious Moonlight tour for his worldwide smash hit album, Let's Dance, with the great ROUGH TRADE opening the show and warming up the troops. On the exact same weekend a year earlier, I had seen The Clash, and in the podcast for the show, Episode 18 and the blog entry as concert no. 12, I discuss how seeing them made for the most-anticipated gig I had attended up until that time. Well, this David Bowie concert one year later—at the same venue but utilizing the full stadium—left that prior show's sense of anticipation in the dust as I finally got to see the performer who had long occupied the No. 1 spot on my “Must See” list. Bowie and his seventies output made a seismic and enduring impact on my life, and in this next episode I will discuss this along with looking at the actual show, on that gorgeous Labour Day weekend in 1983, ending one of the most memorable summers of my young life with an unforgettable climax. Also, the great Rough Trade, another act I love and made an impact on me in the 70s and 80s, was the opening act, and I will be talking about them as well. Tune in next time for life-changing radio Oddities, bamboo steamers among the Bowie masses, and the most exciting show of my life with Episode 29, Concert no. 22, Let's Dance: David Bowie with Rough Trade, CNE Stadium, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Saturday September 3, 1983 You can also read the initial blog entry at mylifeinconcert.com, broken down into two blogs: 022a. It's a big one. Roger takes a coach up to Scotland to see his first David Bowie concert. For a distinctly personal take on what are some of Bowie's most well-documented shows; Roger mixes the events of the day itself with some of his memories of growing up as a teenage Bowie fan in Sheffield during the 1970s. David Bowie [mm:ss] a side: "Modern Love (Studio)" b side: "Modern Love (Live)" EMI America B-8177 1983 Almost like a promo single, but this style is studio on the a-side and live on the b-side. Listening to the studio version, I never realized how kind a lame those synth stabs in the verse are. Anywho the live side was recorded on the Serious Moonlight tour on it's stop in Montreal. Larry Bright [mm:ss] a side: "Mojo Workout" b side: "I'll Change My Ways" Tide 45-T-006 1960 Your keto's got nothin' on my mojo. Also, if anyone has a copy of Bobby Long & the Satellites "Mo Jo Workout" that's VG or better, feel free to send me a copy ;) The Flying Lizards [mm:ss] a side: "Money" b side: "Money B" Virgin Records VA 67003 1979 Prexactly. The mighty fine new wave version of the Berry Goldie hit. And getting all dubby on the b-side. Bay City Rollers [mm:ss] a side: "Money Honey" b side: "Maryanne" Arista Records AS 170 1976 Very riffy single from the tartan patterned lads. Speaking of riffs, how about the Brian May-esque riff on the flipside? The Rebbels [mm:ss] a side: "Monkey Monkey" b side: "Come Back" Bellaphon 1030 1966 Fun for the whole family! A fun single from Germany. Dave and Ansil Collins [mm:ss] a side: "Monkey Spanner" b side: "Double Barrel" Big Tree Records BT-10526 1970* The nutsiest sound around. A reissue from Atlantic Oldies. Major Lance [mm:ss] a side: "The Monkey Time" b side: "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um" Epic Records 15-2221 1963/1972 Whoops, flipped that one around, but you know where my priorities are. Mighty fine Curtis Mayfield tune. Fun fact: The current mayor of Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms is the daughter of Major Lance and Sylvia Robinson. The Chimptations [mm:ss] a side: "Monkeyshines" b side: "I Go Ape" Ramo Records RAMO 105 2014 WFMU's master of monkey mayhem Dave the Spazz (http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/MS) brings us this smash hit with Neil Sedaka b-side. I do indeed go ape for this single. Music Behind the DJ: "Planet of the Apes (Main Title)" by Jerry Goldsmith.

Episode 47: David Bowie - Let's Dance Part 1 (Bowie: 1980 to 1983) During the "Colour by Numbers" episodes, our hosts mentioned the fact that a David Bowie song, "Let's Dance," prevented a Culture Club song from reaching number one on the charts. Brian and Sarah decided that now would be a good time to look into that number one song, and the album from which it came-- which is just about to celebrate its 35th anniversary. Part 1 - Album History "Let's Dance" was the first studio album from David Bowie in three years, which for him was a rather long break. It also marked several departures: from his record label, from his longtime producer, and from his typically more avant-garde, less accessible sound. Brian felt it was important to explore the three-year gap between albums, to better understand what led David Bowie to create "Let's Dance." So with his stack of Bowie books at his side, he and Sarah spend time talking about the period from 1980 to 1983 and what activities and events were prominent in Bowie's life during that time. Our hosts touch on films like "The Hunger" and "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence", songs like "Under Pressure" and "Cat People", and Bowie's feud with one-time manager Tony Defries. Then they get into discussing the actual making of the record, the album's release and worldwide success, and the massive tour that followed. They close the episode by talking about the video for the first song on Side One, which was filmed during the "Serious Moonlight" tour and setting the stage for next week's in-depth look at all four songs from side one. In its landmark 1963 decision Gideon v. Wainwright, the Supreme Court mandated the right to counsel in federal and state criminal proceedings. Fifty-one years after that unanimous decision, some question whether Gideon's promise has been fulfilled, as public defenders struggle against heavy caseloads, limited resources and low pay. On this episode of Lawyer2Lawyer, hosts Bob Ambrogi and J. Craig Williams interview Jonathan Rapping, founder of the Atlanta-based public defender training program Gideon's Promise, and Dawn Porter, director and producer of the documentary Gideon's Army. Together they discuss the daily rigors faced by public defenders in the south, their personal beliefs about unequal access to justice, and their ideas about how to better deliver on the promise of Gideon. Jonathan Rapping is the president and founder of Gideon's Promise, a training and support group for public defenders in the south aimed at creating greater access to justice for indigent defendants. He is also the director of the Honors Program in Criminal Justice at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School, where he teaches criminal law and criminal procedure. Rapping is the former director of public defender training programs in the District of Columbia, Georgia, and Louisiana. He is the recipient of the Lincoln Leadership Award from Kentucky's Department of Public Advocacy, the Sentencing Project Award from the National Association of Sentencing Advocates and Mitigation Specialists, and the Gideon's Promise Award from the Southern Center for Human Rights. Dawn Porter is a lawyer and the founder of Trilogy Films. She was the director and producer of the award-winning Gideon's Army, a documentary about public defenders associated with Gideon's Promise, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and aired on HBO Documentary Films. Prior to beginning her film and television career, Porter worked as an attorney at Baker and Hostetler and ABC Television Network. Among her many projects, she directed "Spies of Mississippi," a documentary on PBS about celebrity Chef Alexandra Guarnaschelli; produced "Serious Moonlight" starring Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton; and produced "The Green," an independent feature starring Cheyenne Jackson (from 30 Rock) and Emmy-winning actress Julia Ormond. Another all-vinyl mix from the bedroom. These are all new to me, but found randomly in the record shop bins. None were heard prior to purchase. All were selected from the gut. I am sure some of these are already played out in the clubs and well passé, since it has been awhile since I have stepped out on the scene. This mix is dedicated to all the bangin' summer festivals, djs, artists, dancers and nomads. Viva Techno!
