You may have noticed that all your favourite online spaces are rife with climate denial, skepticism and down right lies about how humans are effecting the globe. What is driving this change? Are these people working as individuals, in networks or backed by the oil and gas industry itself? This week we here from some who's trying to fight back against the tide of disinformation and climate denial. Ads and Andrew are joined by "Tom" a scientist who has been working anonymously to combat climate denial and disinformation. We discuss why "Tom" has had to keep his identity secret and the threats made to him and his colleagues, how the Oil and Gas industry is using influencers and backing politicians to muddy the waters around climate change and what tactics can be used to combat the worst offenders. In the summer of 2003, Europe experienced its most intense heatwave on record - one that saw more than 70,000 people lose their lives. Experiencing the effects whilst on holiday in Tuscany, climate scientist Peter Stott was struck by the idea that just maybe, he could use a modelling system developed by his team at the UK's Met Office Hadley Centre, to study extreme weather events such as this very heatwave mathematically; and figure out the extent to which human influences were increasing their probability. That's exactly what he went on to do - and, through this work and more, Peter has helped to shine a light on the causes and effects of climate change. His career, predominantly at the Met Office Hadley Centre, has seen him take on climate change sceptics and explain the intricacies of greenhouse gas emissions to global leaders. His work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change even earned him a share of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. But the biggest challenge remains: Peter talks to Jim Al-Khalili about whether humanity can adapt quickly enough to deal with the increasingly dangerous effects of our warming world...Presented by Jim Al-Khalili Produced by Lucy Taylor

Every third person thinks human-induced climate change — which is real and caused by us humans — is a fantasy. But if you think it's a psychological trick to drive SUVs or fly (guilt free), a new study suggests you're wrong.
Look, we know we sound like boomers — but there really is something wrong with mass-produced music today, and it's connected to the science of how humans perceive beats.
In this episode, Ralph and Luc delve into what the oil companies knew about CO2's impact on the climate, and how they lied to you to sustain their fossilized business model – even if it risks drilling us into oblivion… This argument will soon be heard in court as part of a series of lawsuits against Big Oil.We start by looking into the history of scholarship on this issue, dating back to the 19th Century. We highlight the record of what the oil companies such as Exxon and the American Petroleum Institute were saying behind closed doors – and contrast this with their contemporaneous public statements.Sources:• If you would like to read California's lawsuit against ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, BP and the American Petroleum Institute for deceiving the public for decades, you can access it here:https://www.gov.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/FINAL-9-15-COMPLAINT.pdf• We quote from the 2010 book Merchants of Doubt; How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Climate by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Hour 1 of The Dawn Stensland Show: Are Philadelphia's leaders out of touch? Homicides and gun violence continue to surge throughout the city—and over the weekend several teens were shot. The Philadelphia Police Department is at risk of losing its state accreditation. According to reports, the potential revocation of accreditation stems from the city's “Driving Equality Bill” which forbids police officers from pulling over drivers for “minor driving infractions.” Over the weekend, several people were arrested while protesting outside of Sesame Place—police say they were blocking roadways. Many are calling for a boycott of Sesame Place after allegations that a theme park character purposefully ignored two black children. On Thursday, the Philadelphia 76ers proposed a $1.3 billion arena near 9th and Market in Center City. The stadium would be privately funded, according to Sixers owner Josh Harris. NBC10 is reporting that many Chinatown leaders are worried about the location. While speaking at the Jewish Federation of Atlantic and Cape May Counties, Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson opened-up about his struggles with depression and anxiety. Former Vice President Al Gore appeared on Meet the Press, comparing climate deniers to the police officers who refused to act during the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. During her weekly press conference, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi denied that her husband has ever benefited from insider information only available to the spouse of a Congress member.

In spite of the shape of the Earth's shadow on the Moon, sailing ships disappearing below the horizon, satellite photographs, orbiting objects, and a mountain of other information about the size and shape of the Earth there are still people who belong a flat Earth Society and even have websites. The number of believers has diminished from 3,500 twenty years ago to less than a few hundred today. Not to worry the Flat Earth Society is being replaced by the Climate Change Deniers.
Do creationists deny climate change? Well, that really depends on what you mean by “climate change.”
The Internet has radicalized people against their own long-term wellbeing. It's true for depressed girls who derive their self-image from Instagram. It's true for guys who seek out porn instead of real partners. It's true for boys who play video games instead of becoming useful. It's true for otherwise healthy people who become anti-vaxxers.It's true for everyday citizens who suddenly become rabid partisans. And it's especially true for the tens of millions of people who, thanks to Facebook's predatory algorithms, now believe climate change is a hoax.Every family seems to have one (or six) of them now. They don't believe in manmade climate change (and usually have a Koch Brothers-funded study to back it up.) Worst of all, they often vociferously deny that there is any possibility that humans could destroy the planet. Here's how to break through to people like this.Don't try this onlineLast week, someone on Twitter accused me of trying to incite murder.Seriously.I responded with composure and rationality, but that didn't stop him from roaring back with a second litany of lies.So I tried to take it offline:Why take of offline?Because I know for a fact that 99% of the population would never treat others the way they do online. This Twitter dude wouldn't tell me to my face over dinner that I'm trying to drum up mass murder. And if he did, we would discuss until we'd reached some sort of understanding. No one wins online.Get them highKidding.Get them drunk.Kidding again. But you get my point. Get them in the right mood first. Have a nice meal together, go for a long walk where you talk about the kids and pets, then cozy up in front of the fire with a tea and some cookies. You need to get them in a safe space before you take them well outside their comfort zone.Tell them your goal isn't to convince them of anythingAnd mean it, too.Be very upfront about your goal:Look, I know you have extremely strong opinions about climate change and how it's a total hoax, but because we're [family/friends/colleagues/inmates/etc] I would really love it if you'd give me five minutes to share my perspective. I don't need you to accept any of it, I just need you to suspend disbelief and humor me so that I can at least feel heard.Almost everyone I know will grant you this request.(If they won't, they're probably an extremely unsafe person and you need to take a big step back anyway, and let them know why.)Stop calling it global warmingGlobal-scale climate change is just too confusing for small minds. They'll say stupid stuff like, “the weather is always changing” and “we've had hot and cold periods before.”And they're right. But they're also practicing some classic third-grade misdirection and they probably don't know it.To gut them of this juvenile tactic, avoid the phrases “climate change” and “global warming.”Instead, keep it grade-school simple: Call it air pollution. That's it. Air pollution. People can deny climate change and global warming, but no sane person can say that pollution isn't real.Once you've gained that foothold, then it's simply a matter of scale.Explain how global warming actually worksTo help people understand how “air pollution” works, tell them this story or do the experiment in real-time:Imagine you have an empty fish tank or a glass cactus terrarium that's airtight and full of oxygen. Now imagine you have a heat lamp shining into the glass box. Sure, some of the heat will escape through the glass, but overall, the box and its contents are going to get hotter, right? Of course. Now, instead of oxygen (O), imagine pumping nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and chlorofluorocarbons (aka CFCs) into the box. If you do this, the glass tank will get hotter, even though the heat lamp's temperature hasn't changed, because these particular gases trap the heat and keep it from escaping. This is called the greenhouse effect. (If you have access to a sauna, take them in and dump a load of water on the rocks to create steam. That's the greenhouse effect.)Now understand that planet Earth is literally a greenhouse. When we pump too many heat-trapping gases into our greenhouse air, we get all sorts of really neat benefits (like longer growing seasons, the ability to grow food at higher latitudes, fewer winter deaths, fewer heating costs, etc) and some truly heinous side effects (scorching temperatures, more weeds and invasive insects, torrential rainfall, more hurricanes, ocean acidification, desertification, rising cooling costs, rising sea levels, increased food costs due to irrigation needs, etc.) So you can see this comes down to a cost-benefit analysis, right? Cool.So my question to you is: Do you think it's in any way possible that humans could potentially pump so much air pollution into our global greenhouse that the negative side effects could maybe outweigh the positives? Then sit back and listen. Your goal here is simply to open their mind to the possibility that global warming could, theoretically, be possible. If your climate change deniers are like the ones in my family, this is where they'll tell you that it's pretty prideful to think that humans are so powerful that they could possibly mess up Mother Nature. This is where you acknowledge their opinion, and then step back in to offer your perspective.Help them realize how tiny planet Earth isI've been to forty countries, driven across North America five times for work, and I literally took a trip around the world for my first book, and can tell you firsthand that the world is incredibly tiny. (Back in the nineties, a commercial plane circled the whole thing in just 31 hours.)People who insist that humans can't hurt the earth simply haven't done the math:The earth is only 123 billion acres, with less than 37 billion acres of it above water.33% of that land is desert and about 24% is mountainous.Only 10.6% is considered arable. There are currently 7.91 billion people alive.Ask your climate change denier friend/uncle if they think it's theoretically possible that you could potentially wreck their half an acre of land.I know I could.I could burn it, oil it, salt it, pollute it, poison it. I could wreck it for at least a century, if not a millennia. Now add the machines of industry, the beautiful and brutal efficiency of transnational corporate capitalism, and tell me our collective consumer lifestyle couldn't possibly do the same. It's an impossible thing to deny without a huge dose of delusion.Again, your goal isn't to convince them of anything, just to open the door to the possibility that so many humans on so little a planet could theoretically do so much damage. Then show them the current scale of human impactOnce you've established that the world is comparatively small and that humans could potentially pollute the air and ruin the land, have a short discussion about the current state of human impact on nature.Be sure to mention:Residential built-up (cities, towns, villages, hamlets, neighborhoods, etc)Crop and pasturelandsGrazingOil & gas productionMining & quarryingPower generationRoadsRailwaysPowerlinesElectrical infrastructureLoggingReservoirsThis is the part where you whip out your phone or laptop and pull up Earth Engine and actually show them a map of our current impact on earth. Now get them to imagine what this map might look like if we grow to 10+ billion people and continue to grow our levels of air pollution and land pollution. Ask them how they think this could impact the world in fifty years.(Pro-tip: If they say “technology will save us,” then point out the flaw in their argument — using such a phrase admits there's a pollution problem. If there wasn't a real problem, we wouldn't need tech to save us. Which it won't.)Understand their point of viewAt this point, thank them for listening to your perspective. Let them know you really appreciate that you feel like you've been heard, and acknowledge it must've been hard for them to sit through. Then, having worked together to establish that humans could potentially do real damage to planet Earth, invite them to share their feelings on your perspective.Ask them why they still feel the need to deny global warming and climate change.Specifically, try to understand their fears.Because if there's one thing I've learned about environmental arguments, it's that it's never about the environment. It's always about politics, power, and control.Remember that your goal isn't to convince themWhen was the last time someone convinced you of something you were 100% certain of?Now you understand! This is why every human on earth (myself included) needs to work on empathy, grace, understanding, and healthy communication.Because accepting the truth is hard. And it takes time.So instead of trying to win an argument, just try to win a friendship. Instead of trying to prove global warming to a climate change denier, just aim to plant some thought seeds. If there's any chance for change in their future, those thought seeds will grow. And remember: Nature holds the trump card. Whether you believe in climate change or not, we're all going to get blasted by the negative effects. We might as well get along in the meantime. Is it really hot on Earth or is it all a hoax? Many scientists claim that it is very real while 10% of scientists claim that it is all a multi-billion-dollar plot to make some researchers more money and eco-friendly companies extra tax credits. Thanks to climate change deniers we may be totally boned. Democrats have entered into a budge reconciliation resolution which should lead to a bigly stimulus package. One of Cuomo's victim accused the Governor of criminal activity. Lunatic Pastor Greg Locke claimed Tennessee plans to imprison the unvaccinated in camps. Right-wing a-hole extraordinaire Pete Santilli said folks are regretting getting the jab because they're worried about the activation of energized graphene oxide via 5G tech. JEEBUS mogul Rick Wiles announced a deal between himself, a Christian music app, Carrie Underwood, and a creepy confederation of straight white Christian penis swingers. A whacko preacher proclaimed "you don't have to wear the mask, you got Jesus. You don't need the vaccine, you got Jesus" to his dumb flock of waddlers. Trump-sucker Mike Lindell continued to sound bonkers promoting his silly cyber symposium where the case will be made Shitler did indeed win the election because of Qanon or something. A particularly dull Karen complained to her African American neighbor about her flag with the Winnie the Pooh character planted in the front yard.
Some trends, such as anti-vax, conspiracy theories and climate-change denial are considered to be right wing occupations. Our guests on this 2013 panel reveal the myth of that line of thinking. They discuss a question that couldn't be more relevant during a pandemic: are anti-science streaks a symptom of corresponding political extremism? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Also, a lot of his testimony seemed to be about protecting the names of US sources on the ground - what did we hear in Assange’s defense about the charges that he recklessly endangered people by making their names public?Guy McPherson, scientist, professor emeritus of natural resources and ecology at the University of Arizona, joins us to talk about a shocking report out that after a spring and summer that saw record-breaking heat waves above the Arctic Circle — with 100+ degree Fahrenheit temperatures — the sea ice floating atop the Arctic Ocean reached its annual minimum extent last Wednesday, with 1.44 million square miles of sea ice remaining, coming in a close second to 2012. In the last decade, Arctic sea ice cover has declined drastically. What does this melting mean and what does it mean for the Arctic to enter a new ecological state?Caleb Maupin, journalist and political analyst to talk about the Bidens, Ukraine and Senate Republicans report; Navalny and calls for the West to “do something,” and a boat load of bank financial crimes! What does it all mean?

The positioning of the O.M.G. Report with Wendy Arthur and the Creek Tribe Report with Chief Dan Sky-Horse is making for some amazing cross-overs of philosophy. Show start: Wendy with the O.M.G. Report posed the question of how people could call themselves Christians, defined as those who follow Jesus and scripture, and vote for a party of abortion and other ungodlike horrors? 30:00 - Dan Sky-Horse engaged in a cross-over talk about Christianity and the much older Native American beliefs. We discussed how whatever happened to the Indians could happen to us under Socialism. History repeats. 1:00:00 - The second hour, Gregory Wrightstone joined us for an update on Climate Change Hysteria and CPAC. I thought he had a speech at CPAC. Was wrong about that. But he did have a bunch of reactions to it, particularly the large number of Black Americans at the conference, which goes against the narrative that the Left wants to portray, and also the amount of folks who want the truth about the climate. They know intrinsically that the world isn't going to end in 12 or whatever years, but they don't have the information to counter the Pro-Hysteria Climate Change Lobby. That's what Gregory does with his book and ap on "Inconvenient Facts."
Today's episode of You've Been Warmed features John Cook - the founder of the very well-known website skepticalscience.com - an amazing resource that debunks the various myths that climate change deniers proliferate online.John founded Skeptical Science because he had amassed an encyclopedia's worth of climate change myths which he actively sought to debunk by using peer-reviewed scientific papers. He later studied a PhD in the cognitive psychology of misinformation in order to better understand the levers behind denial - not just in the climate space but also in areas such as vaccines or tobacco - and come up with frameworks that successfully educate people on the science of climate change.John is currently publishing a book called "Cranky Uncle vs Climate Change" where he uses cartoons, humor and all his accumulated knowledge to create a valuable resource that anybody can turn to when debating climate change deniers. He also crowdfunded the development of a Cranky Uncle mobile app which uses gamification in conjunction with all the content to educate as many people as possible. In this episode we spoke about his background, we approached various techniques that deniers use, explored the role that humor plays and looked at how each of us can develop critical thinking to the point where we can manage these debates successfully.I really admire John's work and I hope you find this episode as educational as I have. When Greta Thunberg set sail for America she might have had an idea that her presence in the land of liberty and freedom (hem), would create a fierce backlash from those industrial interests who see her as a threat to their prerogatives, Little did she know, the backlash she would encourage was so devastating harsh, it would not only echo from every corner of Conservative media, but would impactfully dismiss and smear every young person who her presence inspired. They became unwilling dupes in a financially profitable Democratic game, spearheaded by non-scientists, who saw environmentalism as simply a way to make government bigger and corporations bow down to. . . .tyranny (I think). The arguments were laughable, but ultimately inciteful within NeoConservative circles. In this episode I share with you a number of thoughts I had concerning this reaction, including how ancient mythologies instruct my vision as to whom these business people are and why they act the way they do. United Nations Secretary General António Guterres upped the urgency for reducing global emissions this week. He told attendees at the COP25 climate meeting in Madrid that stalled progress means countries now need to be even more ambitious than what’s outlined in the Paris climate agreement. So how can climate advocates get that message out to climate change deniers? Dr. Laalitha Surapaneni says, “Don’t.” She’s a doctor at the University of Minnesota and a member of Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate. She recently wrote on the nonprofit climate news website Ensia about motivating “passive allies” instead. “I am an internist and so the ‘why’ of any action is central to my practice,” she told MPR chief meteorologist and Climate Cast host Paul Huttner. “So I started thinking about why we would want to convince someone [that climate change is human-made]. And if the answer is because we want them to take action, then we need a different strategy.” Surapaneni argues climate advocates should instead focus on the people who don’t need convincing that their actions play a role in climate change. She likened the problem to a doctor helping someone quit smoking. ”Even when we start in a shared reality that smoking is bad for our health, it takes a long time for someone to go from what we call the pre-contemplative stage, where people are not even thinking about quitting smoking, to the action phase,” she said. “So when we translate this to climate, first we have to convince people it's real, then we have to convince them it's man-made, then we have to convince them to take action, which basically requires them to overhaul their lifestyle.” Surapaneni said it’s a better use of advocates’ time to skip past the pre-contemplative stage and identify those who know there’s a problem but have yet to act. A Yale study estimates that represents some 47 percent of Americans. Surapaneni suggested focusing conversations with these “passive allies” on the concrete, immediate steps they can take.
Who are these "climate change deniers", and why do they believe the things they believe? More importantly, what are the most effective ways to communicate with them, so that they can understand the severity and stakes of climate change? In this episode we also talk about a new discovery on why bird eggs have different colors and patterns, and a sneaky tactic that climate change deniers have used to fool the public.

Some politicians deny climate change. That's bad. Other politicians say it's real but continue to engage in behaviors that cause climate change. That's bad too. Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren recently said we shouldn't get distracted by cheeseburgers and plastic straws. She's wrong. We need to focus on animal agriculture and plastic because both are killing our planet. Others decry climate change while chowing down on fried chicken or steak. Animal agriculture is the leading culprit of habitat destruction, wildlife extinction, water pollution and human world hunger. On this show, we discuss the hypocrisy in today's current environmental movement and what one woman is doing to change that!

On Friday, tens of thousands of students around the world staged a walk out, leaving their classes to demand action on climate change. Well, some students walked out. Many school districts, including across the state of New York, just gave students the day off to join in the protests. It's still unclear how many students joined the protests and how many enjoyed an extra day off. What is clear is that there is no further room for anyone who questions that the planet is indeed warming, that the warming is human caused, and that it is catastrophic. Oh, and that we have run out of time to do something about. Not only was that the loud and clear message from Friday's student protesters, it was also the loud and clear message from last week's issue of TIME magazine. Titled “2050: How Earth Survived,” the issue is written from the perspective 30 years in the future, describing how we managed to avoid complete annihilation from climate change. It's an issue full of breathless melodramatics and dogmatism, not least of which this paragraph from TIME's editor-in-chief and CEO Edward Felsenthal in the opening editorial: “Notably, what you will not find in this issue are climate-change skeptics. Core to our mission is bringing together diverse perspectives. Experts can and should debate the best route to mitigating the effects of climate change, but there is no serious doubt that those effects are real. We are witnessing them right in front of us. The science on global warming is settled. There isn't another side, and there isn't another moment.” One of the people TIME does not want us to hear from is Judith Curry who, prior to her retirement, was the Chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech. Curry doesn't think that the science is “settled.” In her words, “If all other things remain equal, it is clear that adding more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere will warm the planet. However, the real difficulty is that nothing remains equal . . .” In other words, we simply don't know enough about how, as she puts it, the “sun, volcanic eruptions,” and the “interactions between the atmosphere and ocean,” impact the climate to claim that the science is settled. How much of measured warming and recent tropical storm activity is the result of these factors which are beyond human control? How much is increased CO2 the result of human activity? We are simply not sure. There's typically nothing wrong with admitting uncertainty. However, when it comes to this issue, by claiming the science “settled,” and treating those who disagree as “deniers” and heretics, uncertainty is no longer allowed. For many people, a certain kind of environmentalist catastrophism has become a religion, and arresting climate change has become a crusade. The first casualty of this crusade is honest pursuit of the truth. David Wallace-Wells's book “The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming” is treated by many in the media and universities as scripture, complete with prophetic warnings about the end of the world. Yet, as my Colson Center colleague Warren Cole Smith points out, there are scientists who strongly disagree with Wallace-Wells. For example, Michael Mann, the creator of the “hockey stick graph.” And he isn't alone. Another climate researcher called Wallace-Wells's predictions “sloppy” and “hyperbolic.” Of course, I'm not saying that Christians shouldn't care for the environment, or that we shouldn't take the threat of climate change seriously. What I am saying is that there is no way to know what challenges we face, much less how we can confront those challenges, if we take the sort of “science is settled” approach that Time Magazine has. If you'd like to understand this issue, come to BreakPoint.org, and click on this commentary. I will link you to a series of five articles written by Warren Cole Smith. In the series, Warren asks tough questions about the history of the earth's climate, doomsday scenarios, why the climate is changing, and what we can do about it. Again, come to BreakPoint.org, and click on this commentary to learn more about the issues surrounding climate change. Even if TIME Magazine refuses to.
The climate change denying pathology is fatal. Oil companies knew this for over 30 years yet we continue to reward them. Will reality & education stop insanity?
The seemingly endless flow of misreporting, fake news, and partisan content being communicated as fact is hard to keep up with. This week, psychologist Stephan Lewandowsky from the University of Bristol talks about why people continue to hold beliefs at odds with overwhelming scientific evidence and some of the strategies used to counter science deniers.
A renowned primatologist has given the cold shoulder to climate-change deniers.Dr Jane Goodall is best known for ground breaking study on chimpanzees. Now, the 85-year-old spends 300 days of the year spreading the message about climate change. She says that she never thought she would be a scientist, but now believes she has a mission to try and prevent the destruction of our natural world. She told Jack Tame what she'd like to do with people who deny the reality of climate change."Let's go out to the Antarctica where the sea-ice is melting faster than anybody ever expected, and let's put them on the sea-ice and leave them there and see what happens."Goodall says that those people don't really believe it isn't happening, but that the facts are "inconvenient" for them. She is speaking ahead of her New Zealand later this month, with shows in Wellington and Auckland. Despite her age, she says is still regularly touring because of the dark times the planet is going through. "We're polluting air, water, and land, we're burning fossil fuels. All of this is leading to climate change, so because I was given a gift of communication, and people seem to listen, I feel I have to use it."She says that she has to "speed up" as she gets older, because there is less and less time to spread the message. Goodall, through her eponymous institute, is aiming to court more young people into her mission, describing children as the "future" who can save the plane.tShe says that children tend to love nature, but tragically become distracted by technology and materialistic matters as they get older. "Roots and Shoots is trying to get young people out into nature. If you don't know about something, you can't care about it, and then you won't save it."

Unfortunately, Joel was unable to be on the Podcast this week, due to a family emergency. Our thoughts and prayers are with Joel and his family, as they go through this period of grief. But our first guest was gracious enough to be our first substitute cohost, so this was the week of two Joses. This week, Jose and I drank his homebrewed beer, called Fire in the Hole, made with his PicoBrew kit. For our FRED Talks, Jose talked about his fascination with Climate Change Deniers: people who do not seem to understand the interconnectedness of our planet's ecology. While they bury their heads in the proverbial sand, the world is experiencing insane changes in weather conditions around the globe. This is definitely a pro-life issue! I talked about Lent, the 40 day period of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer that prepare Christians for the Easter celebration. Once we get into our conversation, we dive into the issue of what it means to be a teacher. But we also spend much of our time talking about the Janus V. AFSCME case before the Supreme Court. In all likelihood, the rightward leaning court will decide in favor of Janus and thus weaken the ability to public sector unions to work for their members. This case, obviously, is backed by big money, anti-union forces that are pushing for right to work laws across the country. In the closing segment of the show, Jose talks about a new Japanese (JPop) band that he's been getting into: BABYMETAL. The band has an incredibly rockin' sound, which is juxtaposed by the three singers anime-esque voices. The production values of their music videos and concerts is off the chart. Jose also shared that he and his wife have been listening to the Los Angeles Times' Podcast entitled Dirty John. We won't give you any spoilers here, but let's just say that it is riveting! And I shared this week that I watched The Shape of Water, directed by Guillermo del Toro. It's an Oscar contender, so give it a watch! This was our longest Podcast to date, and I did my best to edit it down, but there was just so much great content in this conversation. Please share this with your friends, and be sure to check us out on Facebook. God willing, Joel will be with us again next week. And we hope you will be with us, too! Salut!

Former CBC and BBC Radio Host Mary Ambrose sits down with Jason Thistlethwaite, a Fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation, for a conversation about climate change and insurance companies. The cost of repairing the damage done by hurricanes is massive. In part, because flooding is the most expensive risk world-wide. And insurance companies are shaking their heads. Not because people often don't get flood insurance. Rather, because they have been warning us about the cost of climate change for decades. There are no climate change deniers in the insurance business. We just haven't listened. Listen to Jason tell Mary why we need to start listening.

The earth is warming rapidly and humans are to blame, but the Trump administration is determined to deny the science and delay policy changes that might cap rising temperatures. Professor Mike Mann is one of the world's foremost experts on climate science and climate policy. Vanity Fair has dubbed him the "Jon Snow of Climate Change” for his tireless efforts to warn the public about the encroaching ice zombies climate threat. Dr. Mann joins host Lindsay Beyerstein to talk about climate policy in the era of Trump, the challenges of communicating complex scientific ideas, and more. Although the science has been in on the effects of climate change for some time, there is still a raging political fight occurring between those who have accepted that it is happening, and those that insist it is not. If the science is unable to convince a climate change denier, what about using economics to try and change their minds? Steve and Ben discuss the thorny issue of finding political consensus on climate change and how finding common ground, no matter what the issue, is of paramount importance in tackling the world’s problems, particularly in the hyper-partisan echo chambers that have arisen in the past decade.
