Three once-in-a-lifetime America 250 exhibitions are open this July, all viewing the American Revolution from the British side: the National Archives has George Washington's handwritten letter accepting the British surrender at Yorktown and an original copy of the 1783 Treaty of Paris; the British Museum has four key objects from the Revolution; and Benjamin Franklin's only surviving house anywhere in the world is hosting "How We Lost America" from July 3. Richard Dadd at the Royal Academy (from July 1) is the most compelling new exhibition of the month — a rare survey of the brilliant Victorian painter who created hauntingly intricate fairy scenes while confined to an asylum after killing his father in a psychotic episode. The red weather warning heat wave currently affecting Britain is not a reason to cancel a trip, but it does require preparation: buy a fan on arrival (from Boots, Superdrug, Marks & Spencer, or a corner shop), carry a refillable water bottle, avoid the Central, Bakerloo, Northern, and Piccadilly tube lines during the heat, and use the air-conditioned Elizabeth line instead. During an extreme heat wave, even well-equipped venues can be forced to close galleries — one Anglotopia friend visiting recently reported that parts of the British Museum had to shut because industrial fans couldn't bring temperatures down, and visitors were fainting. Have a backup plan for every attraction. The Art as Witness exhibition at Westminster Hall (from July 13) — gathering official artworks made to record Queen Elizabeth II's lying in state in September 2022 — is a quietly moving, freely accessible display in one of the oldest buildings in London, and is worth combining with a Houses of Parliament tour during the summer recess. The BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, running from mid-July straight through August, offers some of the most affordable classical music in London — from Bach to brand new compositions — with tickets potentially still available for some concerts. The Queen's Fashion exhibition at The King's Gallery is now extended into 2027 — if you're visiting next spring, book now, as it continues to sell out in advance. Jonathan's honest verdict: July is the right month if you love outdoor events, maximum daylight, world-class exhibitions, and big set-piece British occasions like Wimbledon, and you're comfortable with higher prices and significant crowds. It's the wrong month if you want contemplative museums, budget hotels, relaxed restaurant booking, or the tube to feel bearable without the Elizabeth line. Tucked between every crowded attraction, there is still a quieter London in July — in tree-lined squares, along the Thames at dusk, in church gardens, in early-morning side streets before the tour groups arrive. Walk slowly, sit in the parks, get to the pub before the evening rush, and the city reveals itself. There really is no middle ground." — Jonathan's honest verdict on July in London. They're hosting a witty and thought-provoking exhibition called 'How We Lost America' — a British perspective on the Revolution, told in the very house where Franklin spent years trying to hold both sides together." — Jonathan on the Benjamin Franklin House. "The temperature climbed to about 98 degrees on their last day and it genuinely curtailed their plans. Walking the sun-drenched pavements and riding the crowded tube became, in their words, a bit debilitating — especially as they were senior travelers. In an extreme heat event, the heat doesn't just make you uncomfortable. It can quietly eat your itinerary." — Jonathan sharing a firsthand heat wave account from an Anglotopia friend. "The first thing you should do when you land and you've checked into your hotel is go to a local ironmonger or hardware store and get a fan. Buy a fan. You will need a fan. Buy two fans. You'll have two fans. Be in a wind tunnel." — Jonathan's number one heat wave survival tip. "The light is a secret superpower of July travel in London. That long golden evening light makes every gray building glow. Yes, it's hot. It's glorious if you love long evenings — maddening if you want to sleep in. But you're in London. Why waste time sleeping?" — Jonathan on July's extraordinary daylight hours. Rev. David W. Hall has been married to Ann since 1980 and is the father of three children and nine grandchildren. He has served as the Senior Pastor of the Midway Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Powder Springs, Georgia, since 2003. Previously, he served as Pastor of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge, Tennessee (1984-2003) and as Associate Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in Rome, Georgia (1980-1984). In addition to pastoring, David Hall is the author or editor of over 40 books and numerous essays. He was also the Founder and Senior Fellow of the Kuyper Institute in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Today's guest is Milton L. Mueller,  a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the School of Public Policy and the head of an advocacy policy analysis group called the Internet Governance Project. Mueller has long walked the halls and sat in the rooms where internet governance is discussed and debated, and has played a role in shaping global Internet policies and institutions. He's the author of a new book called Declaring Independence in Cyberspace: Internet Self-Governance and the End of US Control of ICANN, which takes us into those rooms, telling the story of how and why the US government gave up its control of ICANN, a key internet governance institution responsible for internet names, numbers, and protocols. That history tells us a lot about where we are today when it comes to the broader geopolitics and governance of technology, and it has implications for the governance fights ahead, including over artificial intelligence.

Today is the 4th of July.  A day when America celebrates and commemorates its independence. It’s a national holiday, which means that for many American workers today is a calendared day off from work. A day that you can always look ahead to and say, "I have a long weekend for the 4th, let’s go then." For most, not all, most workers today is a money in the bank holiday.  Along with Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, and a few others, it’s one of the bonus days off for Americans each year.   It’s holidays like this that many people plan vacations and other life dreams around.   But isn’t that a little sad.  Having to compartmentalize all of your recreational time into the time off that your company gives you and the days that the government mandates.  All of that work away from home for a paycheck, and a limited amount of time to actually use that paycheck with your family.  It isn’t how most people would choose to live their lives, but it is how most people have accepted living their lives.   If you are in that boat and your not happy with it, what if you could try to create a work scenario that is more aligned with how you want to live your life. Instead of cramming all of your recreational and family time into weekends and three weeks a year, what if you could spread that time out over the whole year.  Each day having the ability to do whatever that you want to do most. Not all day every day, but part of every day.   That doesn’t mean that you don’t have to work.  But you could do the work on your terms, in your preferred location, and on your schedule.  Effectively making every day a working holiday.
