Welcome to this very different episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast. So, what's so different about this episode? Well, it's the first-ever Cinema Australia Podcast recording with a live audience. This episode was recorded during the recent WA Made Film Festival, where we invited friend-of-the-fest Zak Hilditch to join me and other punters for an interview about his career and his new film, We Bury the Dead. We Bury the Dead was filmed in Western Australia and follows Ava Newman (Daisy Ridley), a desperate woman searching for her husband in the aftermath of a catastrophic military experiment. Hoping to find him alive, Ava joins a "body retrieval unit," but her search takes a chilling turn when the corpses she's burying start showing signs of life. We Bury the Dead will celebrate its official world premiere at SXSW from March 9 to March 13. As the film isn't officially out yet, and I missed it at the Adelaide Film Festival, most of this episode focuses on Zak's career as a whole—which is hard not to admire. Following Zak's Backyard Trilogy, a series of low-budget films he made in the early stages of his career, the filmmaker went on to make the cult classic These Final Hours here in Perth, followed by the Stephen King adaptation 1922 and his horror thriller Rattlesnake, both made for Netflix. Thank you to everyone who attended this session during the WA Made Film Festival. We hope to bring similar sessions to future festivals. Anyway… enjoy.
There is still time to recap this striking film. To help us out, we're joined by Aus horror royalty, Cornel Wilczek – composer behind Talk To Me, Together, These Final Hours, and maybe the next Streetfighter film!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
HOW TO MAKE GRAVY, the adaptation of the classic Paul Kelly song is your taste of Australian Christmas melancholy cinema this festive season. Stars of the film and icons of cinema HUGO WEAVING and DANIEL HENSHALL wander into the Last Video Store to pick up a rental combo of their favourite films. A great chat with a couple of dream guests. Between them they've starred in films like The Matrix, Snowtown, Lord of the Rings, Acute Misfortune, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert Proof, The Babadook, These Final Hours and V for Vendetta. And we're not just listing those for the Search Engine Optimisation (ok, maybe a bit). Follow ALEXEI TOLIOPOULOS on Letterboxd for all the rental combo lists. Here's Hugo and Dan's picks.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a four parter anyways. 2014 was for me, a classic year for horror movies, Some would say that not enough time has elapsed to make this assessment, I say, balderdash! The highs are really high & the lows can be quite messy. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 2014? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and over 5 hours of running time split over 4 episodes. This is 2014, A Year In Horror.00.29 - What We Do in the Shadows07.36 - Also Rans (Part 2)18.59 - Blue Ruin (w/ Clutch)1.00.34 - Sci-Fi Corner 1.10.09 - Lucy (w/ Elizabeth Blake Thomas)
Zak Hilditch is an Australian writer and director primarily known for the Netflix hits, Rattlesnake, and 1922, based on the Stephen King novella. Zak's earlier films include Transmission and These Final Hours. Zak is a very exciting director and has a very inspiring origin story, along with some great advice for pitching producers. I took a lot of notes from this conversation and hope you enjoy it. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Zak Hilditch. Make your feature 8 shorts in rapid succession. Hopefully, by now, you've read Save the Cat by Blake Snyder, Story by Robert Mckee, and maybe even the Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Cambell. They all feature multiple formulas, etc., but one of the simplest, arguably most elegant ways to approach a feature screenplay is to make 8 12-minute shorts. For a movie to have compelling beats, every twelve minutes should feature a mini-story with a beginning, middle, and end to keep things consistently interesting. Hitchcock was known for doing this; for another example, pay close attention to The Others. Yes, this is formulaic, and yes, it's important to be original, but it's an interesting concept to observe because sometimes you need to know the rules to break them. Prep for your water bottle tour. First of all, a water bottle tour is when typically, your agent or manager sets you up with back to back to back meetings with producers so you can pitch them on yourself and your projects all at once. Each office along the way usually gives you a bottle of water while you wait hence the name, water bottle tour. If you get the chance to do a water bottle tour, make sure to have a full stable of ideas and concepts to pitch everyone you meet. Sometimes these meetings are in the context of a specific project, but this is not the way to approach water bottle tours. Yes, arrive prepared to pitch that project, but know that they may pass on it, in which case, you need backup concepts in your arsenal to tell them about. Having multiple projects enables you to pitch your sensibility as a director because there's always a chance they like you and your taste, but that one project isn't right for them. Having multiple projects makes you way more likely to get a deal since not only do they have more options to choose from as producers, but you get to showcase your sensibility in a much deeper way so that when a project comes across their desk that you're right for, they're more likely to think about you. On water bottle tours, producers meet so many people that they cannot remember most of them, so you need to leave a strong impression of yourself, your work, what you're capable of, and the kind of stuff you want to do. Keep multiple irons in the fire. This point is a natural extension to the previous one and further speaks to the importance of developing multiple projects at once. This is a paradox to the importance of focus, but the name of the game is being versatile and multi-faceted and having multiple things you're pitching at all times because you never know which one will hit or when. Zack spent years pitching one of his projects with little to no interest; meanwhile, his concept for Rattlesnake was instantly greenlit by Netflix. Hollywood is a fickle beast this way, without rhyme, reason, or logic sometimes, and it can drive you insane if you're not prepared for it. The film industry is a current, and rather than fight it; you need to learn to surf it. So get those screenplays ready, and I'll see you in Hollywood! ----- Produced by Simpler Media
This episode finds me in the esteem of another Curtin University alum. In 2012, his short film "Transmission" a tonal companion piece for "These Final Hours" was nominated for Best Film at the 2013 AACTA awards and won Best Screenplay. In 2014 his debut feature These Final Hours [a self-described “movie about the bogan apocalypse] as stated in the Screen Australia Media release dated April 22 2014 had its International premiere at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes receiving a standing ovation after its screening. And as noted in Cinefestoz.com, "To date he is the first and [still the] only Australian to solely write and direct two exclusively Netflix original films" namely, the 2017 film titled 1922 adapted from the Full Dark, No Stars collection of four novellas by Stephen King, and the follow up original film Rattlesnake released in 2019.Please enjoy this entertaining discussion with Zak Hilditch. This episode looks at the little-known genre of Disaster Horror, and when it overlaps with Natural Horror. This is one of the longest episodes for a reason: there is a lot to talk about! This episode looks at four types of disaster horror, and the films discussed include: Earthquake!, The Wave, Threads, Chernobyl, Flu, Contagion, Melancholia and These Final Hours. I hope you are enjoying these episodes! A list of natural horror films is available on our blog, anatomyoffear.com, in case you want recommendations. I originally planned to take this week off because I aim to release four episodes per month. But next week, I have a new single coming out. It’s being released in support of KrabbeConnect which is holding its big conference next weekend for patients with Krabbe disease. Marc Gunn, Rising Gael, John McLean Allan, The Changing Room, Syr, Marys Lane Krabbe disease is a rare genetic disorder. It is a severe neurological condition that results from the loss of the protective covering surrounding nerve cells. Individuals affected by Krabbe disease do not make enough of a specific enzyme. Because of this, Krabbe disease slowly damages the white matter, brain and spinal cord, as well as nerves outside the Central Nervous System. You can find out more about it at KrabbeConnect.org Because of the new single, I decided to put together this Celtic Rock Bonus. If you enjoy my song, please add it to your playlist when it is released on October 8. We’re trying to raise awareness. So your help would be appreciated. In fact, it’s almost morbidly comical that one of the biggest challenges musicians have faced over the past few years is the declining sales of our primary revenue stream, CDs. More and more people are streaming music. That’s made touring all the more important. And now we have COVID-19. All of my big gigs through May are canceled. It’s the same with most musicians. There has never been a better time to ask for your help. Please support the musicians you enjoy. If you’re able to buy digital downloads, a CD, or merch or tip the artist online. Do so. If you’re not, we totally understand. So do something to promote the artist. Share their CD or Spotify page. Do something to spread the word. Share your love of them online and in your Facebook groups or other social groups. I confess I’ve never been more thankful that I have this podcast to help support my family. So I can only imagine how other Celtic musicians are faring. Please support them as you’re able. TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. A HUGE thanks for your podcasts: it's always exciting waiting each Thursday! This week (just as the last and, probably, also the next one) I'm working from home, due to COVID19 emergency. Here in Italy very strict rules force us to stay home and go out only for severe necessities. Well, it's been a bit difficult to get used to but... hey! We are safe, alive, and we have our favourite music (Celtic one of course!) and your company! Even in this difficult times I thank the Lord and wait for better times... thanks to you, also, for your weekly gift. Attached you can find a pic of me working at my "new desk"... stay safe my friend!" Eric Mailler responded to a Celtic Music Magazine email: "Hi Marc, I downloaded the songs without any issues. Also wanted to say thank you for everything you do. I love listening to songs I’d never hear otherwise and learning more about Celtic culture through the song lyrics and letters your read. You asked who some of our favorite Celtic bands are. As far as well known bands go, the Young Dubliners and Gaelic Storm are up there for me. But, for local bands, the Rogue Diplomats are awesome. I usually try to catch them in Bethlehem, PA around St. Patrick’s Day. Anyway, thanks again, and Sláinte!" Steven Rausch emailed a photo: "Listening to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast, made this traditional Guinness beef stew on St Patrick’s Day (and your birthday). Slainte." Sean Morris emailed: "Hi, loving the podcast! You mentioned that listeners should submit music from female musicians/singers for future consideration. I'd like to draw your attention to banjoist Angela Usher from Manchester, England. Angela is a contemporary of musicians such as Mike McGoldrick, the Farrell's, Dezi Donnelly, Angelina Carberry, John Joe and Grace Kelly, etc who grew up learning and playing together in the 80's/90's in Manchester. She released her first album 'The Gort Mile' last year which has some lovely tunes and songs (some her own pieces). It's a measure of the regard she is held in that she had musicians such as Mike McGoldrick, Colin Farrell and John Carty collaborating with her on the Album. (I think Mike McGoldrick may have produced it) Angela is also involved with a cross community (Irish and Jewish) music project 'Amid the murk over the Irk' as a performer/composer/arranger. This is quite an interesting project which has brought gems such as this version of The Butterfly to us Angela also host several sessions in Manchester. Actually worth mentioning Grace Kelly here as well, former All Ireland whistle champion, sister of bodhran player Jon Joe Kelly who hosts another four sessions in Manchester. We have a strong female contingent of musicians here and it's not unknown for men to be in the minority at sessions here. Anyway, hope you enjoy Angela's album. Keep up the good work with the podcast."
Regular listeners will notice that Shane had this week off, on a much needed rest, he will be back next episode as usual.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Australian films, when they are independent and when they are thrillers, they do all seem to be very dark. The list is amazing: Sleeping Beauty, Acolytes, Snowtown Murders, Wolf Creek, These Final Hours, The Loved Ones, and X: Night of Vengeance. Now another filmmaker in his motion picture debut, Ben Young, brings his version of the dark thriller to the big screen. The film, Hounds of Love, has been doing the festival circuit, even just a few months ago, and has been receiving rave reviews by critics. Vicki Maloney is a seventeen year old girl whose parents have recently divorced. While visiting her mother’s home, she sneaks out the window at night to meet up with her boyfriend and girlfriends at a local party. While on her way there, she is picked up by a couple who say they have marijuana for sale. Arriving at their home, she heads inside only to wish that she never had. The film stars Emma Booth and Stephen Curry as Evelyn and John White, based on a real life case of two folks who abducted and killed four young girls in Perth, Australia. Ashleigh Cummings stars a Vicki in a very draining role of a young woman fighting for her life. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new VOD release and gives their thoughts on the never ending dark Australian thrillers. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Okay, a new year has arrived and now being mid-January, the first genre films have reached theaters and VOD. Films like Body, The Forest, and The Boy have had their January release. Yet going forward, more films are already on their way including some big budget flicks, independent cinema, as well as festival films that are now making it to wide release. Do you like super heroes? Well some humongous films (both DC and Marvel) are coming. Zack Snyder's Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America: Civil Wars, Doctor Strange, Deadpool, and Suicide Squad are only a handful. Sequels and reboots? How about Star Wars: Rogue One, The Conjuring 2, Independence Day: Resurgence, Godzilla: Resurgence, and Annabelle 2 to name a few. New festival circuit horror? Films like Vvitch, February, and the Devil's Candy are coming. And intense thrillers? They include Triple 9, The Green Room, and Jack Reacher 2. As co-host Mike has said, many of the best films to come we may not even know yet. Independent flicks, low budget horror, and foreign films just appear on VOD or theaters and overwhelm everyone. What is the next Ex Machina, These Final Hours, or It Follows? Dark Discussions tries to figure out all this while giving their thoughts on what we know. Get a pen and paper ready and start writing down the titles we go through. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. 2015 is over and depending on your viewpoint with horror and genre films, it was a great year or a good year. It certainly wasn't a bad year. Films, with their variety, seemed to have something for everyone. We got disaster movies like San Andreas, post-apocalyptic films too, many being low budget like Z for Zachariah and These Final Hours, to big budget ones like Mad Max: Fury Road. Strong as always, the non-horror genre flicks such as science fiction, fantasy, and so forth were dominated by Hollywood while horror, as in recent years, has been more small budget and independent flicks, even with M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit. Dark Discussions co-hosts saw numerous films with co-host Mike probably able to see the most. With seeing so many flicks, your co-hosts were able to compile their top 24 horror films of 2016 and their top 11 2016 other genre flicks (sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, mystery, exploitation, action). No matter what list we discuss, there were some obvious choices that appeared such as Star Wars, Mad Max, Jurassic World, It Follows, and The Martian. Some surprises too made the top of the lists including low profile flicks like Bone Tomahawk, Creep, Zombeavers, and Predestination. But some of the littlest of films roared to the top too, like Ex Machina or The Gift. Other things discussed include a whole group of listener opinions, their top films, and what they thought of 2016. And your co-hosts also discuss some of the most prominent and successful scenes, characters, and stars from both the best and worst. What a year it was and with so many films to consider, listen up and see what the podcast has to say. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. The party to end all parties. When the end of the world happens, why not go out in a bang. An afternoon all day rave. That's what the new film, These Final Hours, by Australian director/screenwriter Zak Hilditch seems to focus on; a quest by the lead character James (played by genre favorite, Nathan Phillips). He wants to get to this party after a meteor strikes Europe and a ball of fire is only twelve hours away to finish off Australia and the rest of the world. Not post-apocalyptic, but completely apocalyptic. James, a young man, depressed at the fate of himself and mankind, leaves his lover to head to his friend's end of the world party. Drink, drugs, sex ... a place to disappear into pleasure before death. But on his way he saves a young girl from a horrible end and suddenly he's put into a quandary: should he use his last hours alive essentially to pass the time or should he instead do something meaningful. Just maybe his own belief system has given him little choice. Part thriller, part human drama, These Final Hours asks more questions about not only one man's "journey" but essentially the human condition as a whole. Nathan Phillips (Wolf Creek, Chernobyl Diaries, Dying Breed) channels James and his story of the prodigal son and the existential passage to deliverance that ultimately the character seeks. Dark Discussions along with guest host, author Kristi Petersen Schoonover, discuss their thoughts on this intense thriller focusing on the end of the world. Welcome to another edition of the Failed Critics podcast. This week, hosts Steve Norman and Owen Hughes are joined by Paul Field (making his first appearance since the Corridor of Praise: Danny Dyer episode) and Phil Sharman, one third of the award nominated comedy podcast Wikishuffle. On top of the news about Danny Boyle confirming production will begin on Trainspotting 2, there are two new release films reviewed by the team this week; Nima Nourizadeh's stoner comedy American Ultra, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, and the Statham-less Statham-vehicle Transp4ter (...no? AKA The Transporter Refueled.) As well as the new releases, Owen discusses the documentary Welcome to Leith (which is screening this week at the Cambridge Film Festival) with Paul, who also reviews Fort Tilden. Phil rewatches a recent favourite in The Adjustment Bureau and Steve follows up on a discussion from last week's FrightFest summary by checking out Australian pre-post-apocalyptic thriller These Final Hours. These Final Hours udkom på dansk blu-ray fra Another World Entertainment d. 5. marts.
Films discussed on this week's episode: [Ida, 2013, Pawel Pawlikowski] A novice nun and her alcoholic aunt travel through the Polish countryside in search of the remains of the nun's parents, who were murdered during WW2. All this film needs is Mickey Rooney and "a big dubble-ya" and it'd be perfect. [These Final Hours, 2013, Zak Hilditch] What would you do if the world was going to end in twelve hours? Take some drugs? Have some sex? Go some cray? Knowing my luck, I'd probably come down with a cold and miss the whole thing. [Stand By Me, 1986, Rob Reiner] Classic coming-of-age tale about four pubescent lads out to find a dead body and possibly poke it with a stick before saying "Huh. Sure seems dead all right."Hey, do you like our podcast? Why not review or rate it on iTunes? It will help us reach a few more ears, and make us feel all toasty in our heart-parts.
