Welcome to this very different episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast. So, what's so different about this episode? Well, it's the first-ever Cinema Australia Podcast recording with a live audience. This episode was recorded during the recent WA Made Film Festival, where we invited friend-of-the-fest Zak Hilditch to join me and other punters for an interview about his career and his new film, We Bury the Dead. We Bury the Dead was filmed in Western Australia and follows Ava Newman (Daisy Ridley), a desperate woman searching for her husband in the aftermath of a catastrophic military experiment. Hoping to find him alive, Ava joins a "body retrieval unit," but her search takes a chilling turn when the corpses she's burying start showing signs of life. We Bury the Dead will celebrate its official world premiere at SXSW from March 9 to March 13. As the film isn't officially out yet, and I missed it at the Adelaide Film Festival, most of this episode focuses on Zak's career as a whole—which is hard not to admire. Following Zak's Backyard Trilogy, a series of low-budget films he made in the early stages of his career, the filmmaker went on to make the cult classic These Final Hours here in Perth, followed by the Stephen King adaptation 1922 and his horror thriller Rattlesnake, both made for Netflix. Thank you to everyone who attended this session during the WA Made Film Festival. We hope to bring similar sessions to future festivals. Anyway… enjoy.

Cinematographer James Hoare is a recent graduate from Curtin University, where he worked alongside director Christopher Paik-Swan and writer Max Joyce to bring to life their final year short film Don't Talk About the Monster on the Roof, a micro-budget horror short flick inspired by the look of Ozploitation films. It's an impressively taut thriller that is drenched in sweaty tension as a group of mates head off on a road trip up to the Pinnacles, only to find that while on the trip, they each start disappearing one by one after something on the roof of the car rips them away.James' work as the cinematographer saw him utilising LED virtual production technology, alongside drone shots and on location cinematography. He comfortably blends the VFX backgrounds with on location shots, culminating in an effective and creatively engaging short that executes high concept ideas on a student budget.James was also able to present the film at the 2024 CamerImage Festival in Poland as part of their Talent Demo program. At the festival, he was able to present the film and receive detailed feedback from celebrated filmmakers like cinematographer Jarin Baschkle (Nosferatu, The Lighthouse) and director Hiro Murai (Atlanta, Mr and Mrs Smith). In the following interview, recorded ahead of the films screening at the WA Made Film Festival on Saturday 22 February as part of the Saturday Shorts line-up, James talks about his creative journey to becoming a cinematographer, what it means to be able to make films in Western Australia, and a lot more. The line-up for this years WA Made Film Festival is a stellar one, with a huge array of shorts, long shorts, features, documentaries, and a panels galore to keep you up to speed on the ins and outs of the WA film scene. The festival opens with the world premiere of Remotely Famous, directed by Brad Newland. The excitement for that is so high that the screening has already sold out. The energy continues over the weekend with a live Cinema Australia podcast recording with Matthew Eeles and director Zak Hilditch, short film showcases, screenings of award winning films like Genocide in the Wildflower State, world premieres of films like Lint, Christmas Orphans, In Sect, and Highest Treason, while acclaimed films like Jellyfish, Green: The Fight for Rock and Roll, and Everywhere get spotlight screenings.I'm proud to be part of this years festival as I join a panel of excellent WA filmmakers for The Future is Bright: Independent Filmmaker Panel on Saturday 22 February from 11:45am at the City of Perth Library Auditorium. The panel includes Sarah Legg, Tayah Lee-Traub, Steven J. Mihaljevich, Emilie Lowe, Lawrence Murphy, and Oscar Miller, each of whom will be discussing their upcoming feature films which were made completely independently.I'm continually in awe of the work that Jasmine Leivers and Matthew Eeles put into bringing the WA Made Film Festival together. It's a top tier local film festival that reminds audiences that there is a vibrant, active, and downright vital film scene in operation here in Western Australia. For all the details on the festival, and to secure your tickets, visit WAMadeFilmFestival.com.au. Zak Hilditch is an Australian writer and director primarily known for the Netflix hits, Rattlesnake, and 1922, based on the Stephen King novella. Zak's earlier films include Transmission and These Final Hours. Zak is a very exciting director and has a very inspiring origin story, along with some great advice for pitching producers. I took a lot of notes from this conversation and hope you enjoy it. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Zak Hilditch. Make your feature 8 shorts in rapid succession. Hopefully, by now, you've read Save the Cat by Blake Snyder, Story by Robert Mckee, and maybe even the Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Cambell. They all feature multiple formulas, etc., but one of the simplest, arguably most elegant ways to approach a feature screenplay is to make 8 12-minute shorts. For a movie to have compelling beats, every twelve minutes should feature a mini-story with a beginning, middle, and end to keep things consistently interesting. Hitchcock was known for doing this; for another example, pay close attention to The Others. Yes, this is formulaic, and yes, it's important to be original, but it's an interesting concept to observe because sometimes you need to know the rules to break them. Prep for your water bottle tour. First of all, a water bottle tour is when typically, your agent or manager sets you up with back to back to back meetings with producers so you can pitch them on yourself and your projects all at once. Each office along the way usually gives you a bottle of water while you wait hence the name, water bottle tour. If you get the chance to do a water bottle tour, make sure to have a full stable of ideas and concepts to pitch everyone you meet. Sometimes these meetings are in the context of a specific project, but this is not the way to approach water bottle tours. Yes, arrive prepared to pitch that project, but know that they may pass on it, in which case, you need backup concepts in your arsenal to tell them about. Having multiple projects enables you to pitch your sensibility as a director because there's always a chance they like you and your taste, but that one project isn't right for them. Having multiple projects makes you way more likely to get a deal since not only do they have more options to choose from as producers, but you get to showcase your sensibility in a much deeper way so that when a project comes across their desk that you're right for, they're more likely to think about you. On water bottle tours, producers meet so many people that they cannot remember most of them, so you need to leave a strong impression of yourself, your work, what you're capable of, and the kind of stuff you want to do. Keep multiple irons in the fire. This point is a natural extension to the previous one and further speaks to the importance of developing multiple projects at once. This is a paradox to the importance of focus, but the name of the game is being versatile and multi-faceted and having multiple things you're pitching at all times because you never know which one will hit or when. Zack spent years pitching one of his projects with little to no interest; meanwhile, his concept for Rattlesnake was instantly greenlit by Netflix. Hollywood is a fickle beast this way, without rhyme, reason, or logic sometimes, and it can drive you insane if you're not prepared for it. The film industry is a current, and rather than fight it; you need to learn to surf it. So get those screenplays ready, and I'll see you in Hollywood! ----- Produced by Simpler Media

This episode finds me in the esteem of another Curtin University alum. In 2012, his short film "Transmission" a tonal companion piece for "These Final Hours" was nominated for Best Film at the 2013 AACTA awards and won Best Screenplay. In 2014 his debut feature These Final Hours [a self-described “movie about the bogan apocalypse] as stated in the Screen Australia Media release dated April 22 2014 had its International premiere at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes receiving a standing ovation after its screening. And as noted in Cinefestoz.com, "To date he is the first and [still the] only Australian to solely write and direct two exclusively Netflix original films" namely, the 2017 film titled 1922 adapted from the Full Dark, No Stars collection of four novellas by Stephen King, and the follow up original film Rattlesnake released in 2019.Please enjoy this entertaining discussion with Zak Hilditch. AUSTIN FILM FESTIVAL'S ON STORY PODCAST

This week on On Story we’ll hear conversations from two writer/directors from the 26th annual Austin Film Festival. First up, Texas born, Trey Edward Shults, will discuss his emotional new film WAVES, which stars Sterling K. Brown, Taylor Russell and Kevin Harrison, Jr. And later, we’ll hear from Australian filmmaker Zak Hilditch, whose new horror film RATTLESNAKE is streaming now on Netflix. Writer/director Trey Edward Shults’ new film WAVES traces the emotional journey of a suburban African-American family as they navigate love, forgiveness, and coming together in the aftermath of a loss. The film stars Sterling K. Brown, Taylor Russell, and Kelvin Harrison, Jr.. This is Shults’ third feature film; previously he wrote and directed 2015’s KRISHA and 2017’s IT COMES AT NIGHT, which were also released by A24. I spoke with Shults at the 2019 Austin Film Festival after a screening of WAVES. Clips of Waves courtesy of A24. Next up, a conversation with writer/director, Zak Hilditch. Hilditch’s new film RATTLESNAKE, is a psychological horror film about a mother wrestling with the morality of paying a debt to a mysterious woman who saved her daughter’s life. The film is now streaming on Netflix after having it’s world premiere at the Austin Film Festival. Hilditch spoke about writing and directing the project with author and filmmaker Owen Egerton. Netflix Original Rattlesnake is closing out the month of October for the platform with solid psychological horror uses the supernatural and morality in the best ways. At the Austin Film Festival, I got a chance to speak with the film's writer-director Zak Hilditch about storytelling, subverting expectations, and how the spirit of Stephen King horror runs through the character driven film.  The film, which debuted at the Austin Film Festival was a blast to watch and from a storytelling perspective, Hilditch gives and in depth explanation about what exactly goes into making a film where audiences will be trying to guess the ending. For him, audiences like to be detectives, they like to call out the ending and in Rattlesnake it was his job to make sure he was throwing them off at every turn. Additionally, it was important that the horror in the film came from an emotional place, from the moral struggle that Katrina is put through. While the story's supernatural elements crafted a lore and world well beyond what we could imagine.

Episode 315 of The Harold & Maudecast "Punish This Netflix", hosts Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe review the Netflix original Series, The Punisher, Season 1 and the Netflix original movie, 1922. Marvel's The Punisher hit Netflix on November 17th. This live action serial installment of the popular comic book franchise stars Jon Berthal (The Walking Dead), Amber Rose Rivah (Indian Summer), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Girls) and Ben Barnes (Westworld). Created by Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal, Narcos), the story picks as ex-special ops Frank Castle/The Punisher (Bernthal) tries to pick up the pieces of his tragic life after his wife and two children are brutally murdered. His revenge spawned blood quest to punish everyone responsible is dealt with as flashbacks in Ep 1. The series follows Castle, presumed dead, living low in NY under an alias, Homeland Security Agent Dina Madani pursuing the source of an anonymous source outing the CIA for murdering an innocent Afghan police officer and David Lieberman aka Micro, a former CIA agent and hacker who becomes Frank's unlikely ally. Like the other series in the Marvel Defender's universe (which this will presumably tie into), The Punisher is dark, brooding and filled with a lot of unnecessary drama. If you're looking for all out Punisher action, it's there but, with the exception of the first episode, you'll wait till the last 10 minutes of every episode to get it. That said, Bernthal is fantastic and worth all the bloated dialogue spent attempting to make this a drama. 7.5/10 1922, also now streaming on Netflix, is an adaptation of a Stephen King novella. The film stars Thomas Jane (The Mist, Hung) Molly Parker (Deadwood) and Dylan Schmid (Once Upon a Time), written and directed by Zak Hilditch (These Final Hours). After his wife Arlette (Parker) decides to sell the land they live on bequeathed to her by her father, Wilfred (Jane) conspires to kill her enlisting the help of his son Henry (Schmid). Though it appears they may escape the consequences of the law, Wilfred can not escape the karmic wrath of the spirits that haunt him leading to tragedy for all those around him. This film is dark, really dark, tragic, sometimes scary and at times hard to watch. It's filled with blood, ghosts and gore. Jane gives a career best with this performance--he is almost unrecognizable, completely transformed into a 1920s era farmer. The film has a similar vibe as the 2015 indie horror film, Witch, creepy, dark but also gripping and well written. This too is well written and Zak Hilditch takes Stephen King's story and both captures the grimness of 1920s heartland America yet modernizes it for today's very sophisticated horror fans. It's slow moving, so don't expect a lot of jump scares. This film takes its time making you uncomfortable. Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan began October with a Stephen King Netflix adaptation and by golly, we're gonna end it with one too. This week we took a look at 1922, written and directed by Zak Hilditch and based on a novella by Stephen King. 1922 stars Thomas Jane contorting his face as much as possible to do an accent that isn't very good, so let that set your expectations for how this review of 1922 went. Dylan caught up on a bunch of television this week, including David Fincher's Mindhunter, as well as the second season of Stranger Things. Meanwhile, Chris suffered through Suburbicon for all of you so you can hear him talk about that. And of course, there are the Blu-rays of the week and the news. Next week, we're very excited to say that we're reviewing a Marvel movie we genuinely think might be great: Thor: Ragnarok. Film Fallout is a weekly podcast about film and television, hosted on BagoGames.com. Every week, Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan discuss news happening in the industry, blu-ray releases coming out this week, what they’ve been watching, and then a review of one movie. You can listen to it on SoundCloud, iTunes, or on BagoGames. Also follow us on Instagram for some behind-the-scenes magic. We are both on Twitter, if you’d like to follow us there. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. The party to end all parties. When the end of the world happens, why not go out in a bang. An afternoon all day rave. That's what the new film, These Final Hours, by Australian director/screenwriter Zak Hilditch seems to focus on; a quest by the lead character James (played by genre favorite, Nathan Phillips). He wants to get to this party after a meteor strikes Europe and a ball of fire is only twelve hours away to finish off Australia and the rest of the world. Not post-apocalyptic, but completely apocalyptic. James, a young man, depressed at the fate of himself and mankind, leaves his lover to head to his friend's end of the world party. Drink, drugs, sex ... a place to disappear into pleasure before death. But on his way he saves a young girl from a horrible end and suddenly he's put into a quandary: should he use his last hours alive essentially to pass the time or should he instead do something meaningful. Just maybe his own belief system has given him little choice. Part thriller, part human drama, These Final Hours asks more questions about not only one man's "journey" but essentially the human condition as a whole. Nathan Phillips (Wolf Creek, Chernobyl Diaries, Dying Breed) channels James and his story of the prodigal son and the existential passage to deliverance that ultimately the character seeks. Dark Discussions along with guest host, author Kristi Petersen Schoonover, discuss their thoughts on this intense thriller focusing on the end of the world. These Final Hours udkom på dansk blu-ray fra Another World Entertainment d. 5. marts. Hør mere om filmen i podcasten og læs om blu-rayen på bloggen.

All this film needs is Mickey Rooney and "a big dubble-ya" and it'd be perfect. [These Final Hours, 2013, Zak Hilditch] What would you do if the world was going to end in twelve hours?
