Send us a Text Message. When I think of rum, I think of pirates. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum, right? And when I think of pirates, I think of treasure chests full of gold, silver, precious gems, buried treasure. The rum seems recreational, dastardly, debaucherous, trivial. The treasure, now that's serious. That's the job. There's no messing around with the treasure. But, did know, for many in the business of maritime trade and, yes even piracy, the rum was the treasure? Did you know that rum, while likely started by enslaved Africans, later became the currency with which they were bought and sold? And did you know that rum was such a valuable commodity in colonial America, it helped open the door to the American Revolution, changing the world forever? Let's fix that. www.historyfixpodcast.comBe sure to check out:Outer Banks Distilling "Caribbean Rum: A Social and Economic History" by Dr. Frederick H. This episode follows up a conversation that began in episode 9, "Why Vatican II is essential to understanding present-day Roman Catholicism". In this episode, we discuss the "development" of Roman Catholic theology, a development that evangelicals claim is contradictory to the previous doctrines put forth by previous church councils. Listen as we discuss how Vatican II seems to clearly contradict not only past councils but also (and more subtly) its own documents. How should Evangelicals understand such contradictions? https://thefootballhistorydude.com/first-ever-nfl-game (First Ever NFL Game | Dayton Triangles vs. Columbus Panhandles) What teams played in the first-ever NFL game? Last week we discussed the first game featuring an NFL team with the Rock Island Independents, but they didn't take the cake when it came to the first official game between two NFL (APFA at the time) teams. The Dayton Triangles hosted the Columbus Panhandles at Triangle Park on October 3, 1920, to earn that honor. The Triangles beat the Panhandles 14-0 to earn the first official regular-season victory in NFL history. Unfortunately, this was the crowning moment for the Triangles. You can learn more about one of the original 14 NFL teams on this week's episode. So strap on your seat belt, and let's get this baby up to 88MPH. If you're listening to this episode when it comes out, you may know that The Story Behind book will be released on Monday, October 15th. In the spirit of that, I'll be doing a few episodes revolving around books. This topic seemed almost too easy to cover, since the invention was something I think we all remember learning about in grammar school. But, as per usual with this podcast and the book, whenever I dig a little deeper, I always find out new information that wasn't in my history books. While those books were most likely printed using modern-day printers, there wouldn't even have been widespread use of books without today's topic in the first place. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind the Printing Press. I'll be releasing a separate episode with a book update, plus a sneak peek into the book's acknowledgments because I really want to thank everyone, not just in the book, but also in the podcast, so check your podcast app and the show notes for that link. Are you stuck in a rut? Feeling trapped by life? Well, it's better than being stuck in a well or trapped in a cave. Cleithrophobia is the "fear of being trapped" and honestly, it doesn't seem like it's that unreasonable. Having to hack off your own arm to free yourself from a massive boulder? Doesn't sound like a lot of fun. This week we shine our searchlight on real and fictional people who have been trapped - both in a physical space or somewhere more metaphysical. Back by (very) poplar demand, we had David Souders with the law firm Weiner Brodsky Sidman & Kider as our guest. On September 26th, David was on the program and we discussed the "do's and don'ts" related to recruiting (both as as recruiter and a recruitee). We received as much or more feedback from that one program as we have had from any other program. We were inundated with questions. So on this program, we dove deeper and answered many of the questions that we had received as a result of the program on September 26th. You can e-mail David Lykken questions at DLykken@MBS-Team.com or go to the LinkedIn discussion group "Lykken On Lending radio program blog and discussion group" and post your questions there.
