"Deep in the golden heart of the Ashburton District, the mountains rise up to meet you. Two hours drive from Christchurch, I turned off the inland scenic highway at Mount Somers, bound for Lake Heron Station. The sealed road ends by the historic Hakatere buildings, but the sense of heritage in these parts is rich. Turning off at Hakatere onto the graded gravel road to the lake, I'm rolling through a wide open basin of golden tussock and matagouri, bracketed by high, glaciated mountain ranges.   Lake Heron Station is a magnificent high country merino station that's been a going concern for the Todhunter family since 1917." Head Shepherd
Breeding for the Consumer at Cleardale with Ben Todhunter.

Play Episode Play 45 sec Highlight Listen Later May 21, 2023 38:29

This week, our guest is Ben Todhunter from Cleardale Station in Canterbury NZ. Ben's grandfather purchased Cleardale in 1943 and is named after its geographical "snow shelter" attributes. Cleardale is only 4 km from Mount Hutt as the crow flies. Stud breeding is in Ben's genetics, with his great grandfather founding the Blackford stud in 1924. In Ben's time, they had a traditional first cross English Leicester/Merino flock. But, since Ferg has been around they've been doing things a "bit different".One of those things is breeding the Cleardale SX Fine Wool. A 21-24 micron sheep with crossbred performance."We'd been getting similar results in production traits from the SX fine wools.. finer micron, similar reproduction and growth rates." Ben explains.  "We've made the choice to go that way, and go quite fast that way. Given the way we're going with disease resistant traits its giving us confidence to go fast that way too" Cleardale has been involved with the Footrot breeding value since the start of the programme. And because of that, Cleardale has not only one of the most linked flocks on the footrot trait. putting them in the top 5% of the breed. Alongside the sheep, Cleardale run an Angus stud producing cattle for a high country environment. "Functional and efficient cows that have progeny that provide a first class eating experience" is the aim of their breeding plan says Ben, Ben recently visited the US to have a look at the genetics there and also their market chain for beef. Ben says it's hard to compare genetics as it's mainly grain/feedlot based systems. However they are bringing a 3-5 back to the country to give them a try. What impressed Ben in the US was the Certified Angus Beef Headquarters, a programme where they have a value chain trying to line up products to consumers and then the profits returned back to producers. Ben says this has led to an increased demand for the product in a country which already has the highest consumption of beef per capita in the world. One thing that's never too far from Ben's mind is value chains; working out which consumer sets are going to be doing what. Mark asks what Ben sees playing out in the future. "Breeding for the consumer." is very much the focus at Cleardale. But as ever with genetics, it's not as easy as it sounds. "You've got to predict what the consumer wants before they want it." Explains Mark. "Because if you want to put a lot more IMF in your beef you have to start now, because it's going to take time."Mark and Ben discuss the importance of writing those bets down. "It's awesome when you pull the document up from 8 or 10 years ago and you can tick off those boxes, that there's an objective that's been met".Cleardale is a great example of where commitment and enthusiasm can take a breeding plan in a short time. Head Shepherd is brought to you by neXtgen Agri International Limited, we help livestock farmers get the most out of the genetics they farm with. For such a seemingly simple sample there's a lot you can learn from a urinalysis. Many of us also have a fair amount of uncertainty around much of the 'how' of urine sample handling, analysis and interpretation. It's also the one bit of lab work where being good at in-house testing can make a big difference to the reliability of your results. We KNOW you'll have had some disagreements at some point in your career about at least a few of the questions we answer in this episode, like fridge vs benchtop, how old is too old for a urine sample, how long after starting antibiotics can you still culture, is it even worth culturing a free-flow sample, WHEN should I culture, can you trust your dipstick, can you trust AI, why some urinary bugs just won't die, and what the heck is the deal with casts?! I also suspect that, like us, you'll learn a few things that you didn't even KNOW you should know. Our guest is Dr Kristen Todhunter, a pathologist for the SVS Pathology Network who confesses to having a bit of a soft spot for all things microbiology. She answers all of the questions we've ever had around how to get the most from your urinalysis. Grammar pedants speak out on this monumentally important issue.  Anyway, Daniel and Shana discuss Gazpacho soup as a sort of Rosebud for understanding Rimmer's life, and question whether it was really as big a deal as Rimmer seems to think it is. Also, classism in food choices, Rimmer vs. Todhunter, unpaid electric bills, and possibly the greatest performance Danny John-Jules has given us yet.  Main Topic: Me2. Mugs Murphy. Naming convention. "Oh, Rimmer!" Control. April Fool's. Mission. Futurama plots. Critics. Never JFK or Ductwork or Prison. Invasion. Continuity. Specific. Stuck. Breakup. Legacy. Devices. Bubbles. A step back from literalism. Bashing the Skutter. Dickish. Cunt error. Performance. Feline. Charles Rimmer Kane. Hot Gazpacho. Taj Mahal. "How Rimmer of him." Competitive swimmer. Meditative. Socially awkward. Obvious. IT Crowd jokes. Pranks. Todhunter. Terrible. Post-scarcity. Not masturbation. Seven jerks. Status. The Meaning of Life. Execution. Tropes. Alternate. Morality. Dude, existence. Star Trek crap. Military versus ocean. Eastern. Wrapping Up. Balance. Straight. Writing. Pleather.  Check out all our future episodes at oispaceman.com.

Away we go. In this first episode of the long-awaited (by Daniel at least) new podcast "Red Dwarf: Searching For Fuchal" Shana and Daniel discuss the pilot episode of the classic sci-fi comedy series: "The End." Racial and gender politics, existential dread, and what it might mean to "interfere with a woman" are all discussed. Main Topic: Red Dwarf Series 1, Episode 1: "The End." A bad Doctor Who reference. Don't sully with Moffat. Introducing the podcast. "You're making me read?" How Shana found Red Dwarf. Attracted to Lister. Actors' names. Cat evolution. Minstelry. Gender imbalance. Existential Everyman, but funny. Daniel's introduction through Infinity. Disappointing. Sassy CP. Lister's dream. Kochanski/Lister. Potential future. Form versus content. Prestige is a made-up social thing. Trapped in a social milieu. Rosencrantz and Guilderstern. Worldbuilding. Working class audience and characters. The 80s sucked. Alcoholism. Officers and enlisted men. Rising in social class. Existential dread. Todhunter the hero. Rimmer's culpability. Density. Structure. Credits. Paint. Has to be science fiction. Pipe cleaners. A bro thing. Unappreciative Lister. "Interfere with a woman sexually." Frankenstein is out of fucks. Shana imitates the Cat. "Everyone is dead Dave." Black box theater. The Rimmer salute. Wrapping up.   Right now we're working on the upgrade, but eventually you'll be able to find links to all our stuff (and all of our new episodes) at oispaceman.com.

The Halls of Ivy was an NBC radio sitcom that ran from 1950-1952. It was created by Fibber McGee & Molly co-creator/writer Don Quinn before being adapted into a CBS television comedy (1954-55) produced by ITC Entertainment and Television Programs of America. Quinn developed the show after he had decided to leave Fibber McGee & Molly. The audition program featured radio veteran Gale Gordon (then co-starring in Our Miss Brooks) and Edna Best in the roles that ultimately went to British husband-and-wife actors Ronald Colman and Benita Hume. The Colmans had shown a flair for radio comedy in recurring roles on The Jack Benny Program in the late 1940s, and they landed the title roles in the new show. The Halls of Ivy featured Colman as William Todhunter Hall, the president of small, Midwestern Ivy College, and his wife, Victoria, a former British musical comedy star who sometimes felt the tug of her former profession, and followed their interactions with students, friends and college trustees. Others in the cast included Herbert Butterfield as testy Clarence Wellman, Willard Waterman (then starring as Harold Peary's successor as The Great Gildersleeve) as John Merriweather, and Elizabeth Patterson and Gloria Gordon as the Halls' maid. THIS EPISODE: October 4, 1950. NBC network. Sponsored by: Schlitz Beer. Mr. bentley Brook has come to at Ivy College. He's quite good looking, and he's apparently fallen in love with Mrs. Hall! Ronald Colman, Benita Hume, Ken Carpenter (announcer), Sandra Gould, Jerome Lawrence (writer), Robert E. Lee (writer), Ken Peters, Helen Crutchfield, Mary Alden, Henry Russell (composer, conductor), Nat Wolff (director), Don Quinn (creator). 29:25.
