Doctor Staci has always been passionate about children's nutrition and how to improve our food system, the oral microbiome and the oral-systemic connection, and sleep and airway health, focusing her research in residency on how to improve airway assessments and diagnostic tools in the paediatric population. In this podcast we discussWhen our children should first see a dentist and start brushing their teethWhat is a cavity and why do we get themThe optimal diet for dental health, and what to do if you have a picky eaterDr Staci's thoughts on toothpaste - what to look for and avoidAll about flossing and fluorideWhether breast milk causes tooth decayWhy is open mouth breathing is a red flag and what it may indicate... and so much more! You can connect with Dr Staci via instagram and her websiteToday's episode was brought to you by Myo Munchee. Our diet - and in many ways our health - have changed drastically over time. Ancestrally, we were chewing on dried meats, nuts, seeds, etc. which is the ideal exercise for the lips, face, and jaws. The natural growth forces generated from correct chewing make a big contribution to growing faces and maintaining ideal oral function for life. In the last hundred years, the western industrialised lifestyle—with its soft foods, reduced nutritional diversity, and rapidly decreasing range of exercise— has essentially removed natural cues for healthy oral development. Tongue and jaw movements are also being impacted by poor oral habits including processed soft baby food, squeezy packs, pacifiers/dummies, and sippy cups. The Myo Munchee is chewing device that can provide necessary chewing exercise enhancing muscle strength, tone and coordination for better oral posture. It promotes nasal breathing and reinforces correct swallow patterns. Chewing a Munchee also produces A LOT of saliva. Saliva is nature's elixir, helping to cleanse the oral cavity, promoting better oral hygiene. You can use the code BOOBTOFOOD for 15% off the Myo Munchee range. When was the last time you did a radical 180 about a long held belief? Today I'm sitting down with a brilliant dentist who was once picketing in the streets for water fluoridation — yet was courageous enough to change her mind and speak out once she dug into the data once and for all. Meet Dr. Staci Whitman, a board-certified dentist who takes a whole-body, holistic and functional approach to oral health. In this episode, Staci unpacks the surprising factors that contribute to the decline of our oral health including mouth breathing, hormones, and gut dysbiosis. She explains why these underlying root causes are ignored by conventional dentistry and exactly what we need to be asking about and advocating for at our dentist appointments. HERE'S THE JUICE: Functional vs. conventional dentistry and the importance of both Why dental professionals haven't introduced oral microbiome testing as a baseline for all patients How hormone imbalance is leading to an increase in cavities in women and the signs to look for in prevention What LPS is and how it contributes to pathogenic bacteria overgrowth The fact that we aren't taught about healthy bacteria and are encouraged to wipe out all our bacteria with products like Listerine Why dentists are sometimes the first people to diagnose Crohn's disease and how your oral health can inform gut health What a cavity is and how it forms When we may be able to repair cavities without requiring fillings Why mouth breathing is so detrimental to our oral health and how to retrain yourself into healthy breathing habits Resources and recommendations for the products and services we should be talking to our dentist about to be proactive about our oral health Watch the full episode on What's The Juice YouTube Channel To support our ad-free show, shop Olivia's line of herbalist-formulated supplements for digestion, anxiety, thyroid support, and more by visiting www.organicolivia.com. As many of you know, we are dedicated to helping people detox from as many hormone-disrupting chemicals as possible. Good oral hygiene is essential for a healthy body. However, the conventional oral care industry is very plastic-heavy. There's polyurethane in toothbrushes, flavored floss can contain phthalates, and there's even BPA in dental sealants. Transitioning to a greener oral care routine can seem impossible, but thanks to biodentistry, it's not. That's why we are so excited to be joined today by Dr. Staci Whitman. Dr. Staci is a Board-Certified Functional Pediatric Dentist. Brews and Tiny Teeth, The Unfiltered Pediatric Dentistry Podcast
Ok the title is a bit of a click-bait, but I did have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Staci Whitman on the podcast. Dr. Whitman is a practicing pediatric dentist in Portland, Oregon. She is a "functional" pediatric dentist who practices in a demographic that caters to more natural and holistic modalities. Her practice is heavy in dietary guidance, vitamin supplementation, ozone therapy, tie/lip tie release, myofunctional therapy, hard tissue lasers, and also traditional SSCs and general anesthesia. I wanted to have this conversation to widen my horizons and provide me with more context to educate and converse with my own patients who have concerns about fluoride, toxins, and materials. I was surprised to find that I agreed with the majority of points that Dr. Whitman discussed. You can tell that she's passionate about educating her patients, promoting a healthy diet, and focusing on prevention rather than picking up a handpiece to fix the world's problems. I think this will be a great episode for stimulating some critical thinking skills about the way we discuss treatment options with our crunchier families that we all know and love!

My guest this week is Dr. Staci Whitman. In this episode, Dr. Staci and I discuss all things oral health, cavities, and children. The mouth could just be the tattletale you actually want in your child's life! There's a forgotten link between oral health and systemic health/immune function. Issues in the mouth can actually be one of the first clues that something bigger might be going on physically or brain-wise that we need to deal with. So helping kids have healthy mouths is about a lot more than just the cavity issue. Dr. Staci and I dive into contributing factors to rampant cavities and other oral health issues we are continuing to see at younger ages. She shares many tips on how to make dental hygiene non-negotiable in an approachable and realistic way, as well as overcoming (and avoiding) anxiety and dental phobias. Dr. Staci provides lifestyle tips, resources, and product suggestions that she uses in her pediatric dental practice that can support your whole family's health journey. Dr. Staci Whitman is on a mission to create a world without cavities. She's the founder of NoPo Kids Dentistry, where she takes a whole-body holistic and functional approach with her patients. She attended Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and worked as a general dentist for two years, and then went on to earn a certificate in pediatric dentistry from Oregon Health and Sciences University. In 2019, she founded NoPo Kids Dentistry, became a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and is a board-certified pediatric dentist and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She has taken numerous courses and training in children's sleep and airway medicine, studying oral myofunctional therapy, cranial-sacral therapy, and is a Breathe Institute ambassador. She's also an internationally certified health and wellness coach, and dreams of a world without cavities, and believes in motivating families to join her as a team, keeping their children healthy and thriving with small, manageable daily changes. Dr Staci Whitman from NoPo kids (North Portland, Oregon) comes on our show to tell us what amazing ways she is doing early intervention to change the lives of these kids by education on nutrition, helping catch sleep disordered breathing from the beginning, and identifying MOUTH BREATHING early to reduce cavities but also get the most optimal growth. She also does laser CO2 frenectomy or tongue and lip tie releases infants-12 year olds. She is also a user of functional appliances to redirect poor growth or habits. As we know if the tongue is not up all the time, mouth breathing, abnormal swallow, or tongue tied, these kids will have altered growth and poor sleep quality. She is a supporter or myofunctional therapy because we are the ones to retrain those dysfunctions but when the arches are not growing ideally or to help speed the kids back up she uses appliances. Myomunchee habit appliance for the little ones, Healthy start orthotropic appliances. These use your own muscles that guide the growth of the muscles which grows the bones. Find her on Instagram @doctor_staci or if you want more holistic and preventive care for your kid or frenectomy her web is https://nopokids.com
