Guest Renee Zhao works at the cutting-edge of robotic surgery – literally. Emboldened by advances in 3D-printing and miniaturization, she builds “millibots,” magnet-controlled, millimeter-scale soft robots that navigate the bloodstream to remove blood clots and treat brain aneurysms. While the millibot's promise is clear, much work remains before the devices are commonplace. Revolutionizing health care with surgical robots will require a delicate balance of design, buildability, and functionality, Zhao tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? People living with diabetes are always looking for ways to make the management of their chronic condition easier. Welldoc aims to address that with its BlueStar platform, which just received its 10th FDA clearance, this time for using connected insulin dosing data in personalized bolus insulin dosing recommendations. Fast Five hosts Sean Whooley and Danielle Kirsh break down what BlueStar does and how this latest regulatory nod boosts Welldoc. The episode also covers FDA authorization for another innovative technology — Viz.ai's artificial intelligence-based module for detecting hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The FDA's de novo nod creates a new regulatory category for cardiovascular machine learning-based notification software. Learn about how this module works as another AI-based technology garners regulatory approval. Meanwhile, Viseon says it began the U.S. commercial rollout and initial clinical use of its MaxView 4K advanced visualization system. The company describes MaxView 4K system as a first-of-its-kind advanced visualization system for minimally invasive spine surgery. Hear about what this technology does that makes surgeons call it a "game-changer." Microbot Medical, maker of the Liberty surgical robot, entered into a manufacturing deal with B.Y. Medimor. This could prove a significant milestone as the company looks to garner regulatory approvals for its robot before a commercial rollout. Find out more about what the robot does and how Microbot is looking at the next steps. The FDA revealed another Class I recall — the most serious kind — for ventilators made by Philips Respironics. This one, while unrelated to the recall that knocked the company out of the sleep respiratory market more than two years ago, still led to some serious outcomes, including injuries and a death. Learn more about what caused this recall and how many people it's affected in the U.S. to date. Check out the show notes for links to the stories we discussed today at MassDevice.com/podcast.

The long awaited third and final installment to the Ant-Man trilogy has arrived, and Quantumania rules!! The MCU's fifth phase has begun with a microscopic epic using Kang the Conqueror as the main villain, and with great performances from Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiifer, Jack and Artie both bring an exciting review. How does this set up for future Marvel movies? How does it stack up to its precursors and most importantly, how does Kang compare to Thanos? Listen for our thoughts! Our dad also returns for Tales From the Dollar Bin, in which he reviews comic backstories for forgotten robot toys of the '70s and '80s like Microbots and Starriors while Jack reviews Bloodshot #1 from Valiant in 1992 along with the 2016 Ryan Ottley mini-series, Grizzly Shark vs. Seabear.

Also, on today's show: a sponge that sops up oil could reduce oil spill damage; technology can make it easier for the elderly to live independently; more exercise might help those with cancer.

On this 262nd episode of the Turtle Soup Podcast, we review the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated Series - Season 10 - Episode 2 "The Beginning of the End" from Sept 21st 1996. This episode finds the TMNT still dealing with Leonardo's "hyper mutation" brought on by Dregg's Microbots disrupting the power to the lair during an attempted cure for their unstable mutations from episode 1 of this season. Donny tries yet again to cure Leo of his hyper mutation and appears to be successful however Leo starts to feel sick again and the other Turtles (namely Raphael), are ruthless in their needless bullying of him. Carter is still lamenting that he is still uncured of his mutation as well. All the while, the baddies are continuing their schemes to further mutate the turtles out of existence. In order to accomplish this Dregg needs some materials that they don't have at the moment so Mung suggests Plutonium as an alternative. We see hyper mutated Leo hit the streets again and this time destroys a hockey arena. We also get to witness more of April's apathetic attitude toward doing any TMNT related stories for the news anymore. On top of that, we get to see her fawn of the wonders of the internet and its glorious ability to allow her to research stories. Stories about carjackings and how to determine who, what, when, where, and why the next one will take place. Dregg gets the Plutonium. April hides in a car that gets stolen, in an attempt to get into a chop shop (an attempt that is successful, surprisingly). Dregg shows up at the chop shop and uses the microbots to transform it into a... science base? Leo is potentially "cured" but quickly is informed that he's nuclear! Can the Turtles prevent Leo from exploding and taking a chunk of New York with him? Will this be the Turtle story that breaks April's back? Why is there a room full of animals in cages and 1 loose gorilla? Will we see "Otto Wrecker" ever again? Will Carter walk away and go to college this time? Is breaking into a facility to steal plutonium as easy as cartoons make it seem? All this and more to be discussed on Episode 262 of Turtle Soup Podcast, live streamed every Thursday at 8pm EST! Friction, forces, shears: the game changes when robots get tiny. Marc Miskin brings you to scale on these up-and-coming microrobots and nanorobots for biotechnology. Listen and learn How the rules of physics adjust when the application of robotics goes small, How these factors bring interesting challenges surrounding loss of inertia and other aspects of robot locomotion, and What biomimicry this research entails such as nano flagella and cilia. Marc Miskin is an assistant professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and works in a robotic systems lab. He's working on nano machines that may one day soon explore our bodies for medical purposes. The robots are so small that they aren't visible to the eye—think approximately hair width. This field has taken the advances in small computers to small robots, around 70 to 100 microns in size. The forces at this scale are different, of course, and bring in some interesting challenges. When they get tinier, friction, adhesion, and viscosity become the dominant effects and mass takes second stage. Those dominant traits become more important as the area-to-volume ratio becomes large. "It's like everything in your universe is flypaper," he says. What's really interesting is that the electrical aspects remain constant. The voltages and currents are still fixed and electrical interference isn't an issue. The way they move, to swim or propel, also becomes very different than larger human-sized organisms—they can't rely on mass to keep the momentum going. They use silicon, wires, and metal so that, unlike with biological organisms, they can play around with such materials to address these challenges. However, he assures listeners, these materials fall under "generally recognized as safe," and are low toxicity. Elasticity is also an issue these materials hope to address. They need to create enough movement over a small size that can also be controlled by a signal with a specific voltage size, about 1. They came up with something they call "circuit electric chemical actuators," which basically chemically bonds through electron rearranging to create a force. He explains more interesting challenges in this tiny production model and addresses applications for these microbots in real life, though they are still in proof of concept. They imagine utilizing them when single-cell precision is desired, as with nerve work. For more about this work, see his lab's website: seas.upenn.edu/~mmiskin. To redirect Hiro, his older brother Tadashi takes him to the research lab at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, where Hiro meets Professor Robert Callaghan, the head of the university's robotics program. Amazed, Hiro decides to apply to the university. To enroll, he signs up for the school's showcase and presents his project: microbots, swarms of tiny robots that can link together in any arrangement imaginable using a neurocranial transmitter. He is accepted to the school but before he can celebrate a massive fire suddenly breaks out in the showcase hall and Tadashi rushes in to save Callaghan, the only person left inside. The building explodes moments later, killing both.Later, a depressed Hiro, in mourning for Callaghan's and Tadashi's death, inadvertently activates Baymax, the inflatable healthcare robot that Tadashi created. The two find Hiro's only remaining microbot and follow it to an abandoned warehouse. There they discover that someone has been mass-producing the microbots, and are attacked by a man wearing a Kabuki mask who is controlling them. After they escape, Hiro suspects that the fire that claimed his brother may not have been accidental and in fact started by the man in the kabuki mask to cover the theft of the microbots. Film Trivia – IMDBAccording to Scott Watanabe, the movie is set in an alternate future where after the 1906 earthquake, San Francisco was rebuilt by Japanese immigrants using techniques that allow movement and flexibility in a seismic event. After the city was finished being rebuilt, it was renamed San Fransokyo due to it being a city with Japanese and American architecture combined. The production team watched videos of fire ants as an inspiration of the movement of the Microbots.Although it is based on a Marvel comic of the same name, there are lots of changes to the names, the setting, the ethnicities of characters, the back stories, and several plot points. While designing Baymax's super-suit, there is a drawing resembling the top half of Iron Man's helmet.Like the Marvel movies, this film also has an end credit scene, although this movie is not connected with the same Cinematic Universe as the other current Marvel movies The end credit scene features Stan Lee as Fred’s Dad.Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”Toy Story 4 Best Animated Film OscarTokyo Disney Sea Expansion Concept PhotosSegment: Miscellaneous “whosits and whatsits galore”TriviaSegment: Top 4 Ranking “Let’s get down to business” Disney Siblings1. Here we are again the latest episode from the triplets of Nerdity, that’s right folks those wacky goofballs have done it again. First up we have Buck bringing us news about new robots using the art of Kirigami. The art of cutting paper, in this case it is cutting and folding paper. This method has been applied to robotics with some awesome results. Now while it is only early days, we ask you to remember the Origami claw we featured a while back. With this in mind you will understand why Buck is excited, and Professor joins in with the excitement. This is just the start of the show and it is already looking fantastic.Next we look at the dismal lack of taste exhibited by the foolish bunch of weirdos in Hollywood behind the Golden Globes. That’s right we said it, actually Buck did if any snipers are being sent for reprisals. But seriously, just get those idiots to go look at some of the amazing work in animation out there. It doesn’t have to be all CGI, honestly Hollywood was built on proper special effects. These days they struggle to do anything outside a computer lab. While we are not meaning to insult CGI and the wonders it can produce, why can’t we have some proper animation and anime getting awards. When can we see some real special effects like we used to get back in the day. Not meaning to sound as grumpy as Buck or as old as a Boomer but seriously the talent involved in special effects was astounding.Last we look at a remake of Sonic 06 that is actually looking good. That is until corporate lawyers realised they could make money by getting it shut down. Take a moment and open the link, doesn’t that look so much better then what was dumped on the market like so much garbage? The amount of work involved must be mind-blowing, but there may be hope for the future. Want to know what that might be, well you will need to listen in to find out. You thought I was slipping and going to tell you everything, but believe me, there is so much more for you.We finish with the regular shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and special events. As always we hope you take care of yourselves, look out for each other and stay hydrated.Self-folding robots using kirigami- https://techxplore.com/news/2019-12-robots-self-folding-kirigami-materials.html- https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2019/12/11/1906435116/tab-figures-dataAnime Movies snubbed from Golden Globes - https://www.cbr.com/golden-globes-shuts-out-anime-films-promare-weathering-with-you-i-lost-my-body/Sonic 06 Remade by a Fan - https://www.engadget.com/2019/12/11/sonic-p-06-unity-pc-fan-remake/Games currently playingBuck– Pirates Slay - https://www.crazygames.com/game/pirates-slayRating: 4.5/5DJ– Frenzy Retribution - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1108560/FrenzyRetribution/Rating: 4/5Professor- Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition - https://store.steampowered.com/app/813780/Age_of_Empires_II_Definitive_Edition/Rating: 4.733/5Other topics discussedKirigami Definiton (variation of origami that includes cutting of the paper, rather than solely folding the paper as is the case with origami, but typically does not use glue.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirigami- https://www.origami-resource-center.com/kirigami-for-kids.htmlT-1000 (A fictional character in the Terminator franchise. IoT-focused company Naran not only builds popular smart home products used by people around the globe, but has also created a software platform that helps small or non-technical businesses leverage IoT to make their products smart. Naran’s platform MiB IoT also helps companies like hardware startups, construction companies, and large appliance businesses quickly and easily build connected products. With the simple addition of a commodity low-energy Bluetooth chip to any product, and use of the MiB IoT software platform, companies can create connectivity for new product lines or retrofit older products. Typically, this would require large engineering teams or expensive AWS or Google Cloud contracts to achieve, on top of requiring months of development. In the same way companies like WordPress simplified the website building process, eliminating costly engineering overhead and making it fast and easy to whip up a professional web presence, Naran is hoping to do the same for the IoT software space. I invited Naram CEO, Terence Park onto my daily tech podcast to share his startup story as a former Silicon Valley engineer from Google and Microsoft who had a passion to create better IoT products and has years of experience in the smart home space. We also talk about their third year attending CES.
When Brawn, Perceptor, and Bumblebee shrink themselves down and enter a super-powerful Megatron to stop him, Brawn learns that Perceptor is a valuable part of the team. Find Paul and John on Twitter.
Is it a bird or is it a plane? No, chances are it's a micro-bot, in the form of a mosquito with a hi-res camera for eyes. It's a small world after all. Disney had no idea where all this was heading way back when he coined the phrase. Nano-bots sound like something from a Star Trek script. But it's all here on this edition of US WORLD REPORT. Join Tom Osborne, Dr. David Kanervo, Mary Saliba and Ken McCaleb as they explore the shrinking phenomena of high tech toys, weapons and scientific hardware.

The hunt is on among the world’s airlines for faster and more efficient ways to keep jet engines in tip-top condition. Could the answer be tiny robots that inspect and fix them from the inside? Also, a new study shows that birds deliberately weave cigarette butts into their nests to help keep parasites away. And is it right to relinquish control of our identities to private companies? Ethan never warned the Horrible Night crew that he was a PC gamer, so Coop joins Justin and Ethan to discuss the finer points of the age old PC vs Console debate. We also salute Mexico, Adobe Flash, Blue Ladies, and MicroBot. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow Apparently, when Cole is gone all Ethan and Justin want to do is fight. They invite Coop along to revive the classic PC vs Console debate. Our Threesomes of the Week take a detour to Mexico who seems to be the only country that remembers how to make real soda. The On the Spot question asks: What game did you miss out on because it was on the other platform? Thankfully, we realize that there’s nothing stopping us from going back to play those games today. In our debate, we focus on the strengths and weaknesses of PCs and Consoles while mentioning the games that define each platform for us. Our buddy @RA1NMANN ignites the keyboard vs controller debate and helps Justin realize his ultimate gaming setup. We wrap things up by trying to figure out just what makes us so loyal to our platform of choice. Seems like we could have gone on for hours more, but we manage to regroup for game industry shout-outs where we get confused all over again by Mindjack advertisements. We hope to see all of our friends in the Indianapolis area at the Horrible Night Out Tron: Legacy screening this Friday. For everyone else, get ready to start planning for our massive Mexican soda meet-up later this year.
