Fire up the Key Change time machine! We're charting our course for the collaborative partnership between Santa Fe Opera and the University of New Mexico (UNM).  Never experienced time-machine travel before? No problem! Key Change co-hosts Olga Perez Flora and Anna Garcia are experienced pilots. They introduce us to students participating in the Young Voices residency and steer our audience through an exciting day of master classes and workshops on the UNM campus. And don't worry if you're new to this bold, creative initiative. Olga and Anna provide episode recommendations to help you navigate the journey.  “It's such a wonderful opportunity,” says Jamie Flora, esteemed tenor and professor at UNM, of the university's collaboration with Santa Fe Opera. The dynamic program includes master classes on technique, audition logistics, performance critique, and resumé building, all designed to bridge the academic and professional opera worlds.  “We're planting seeds in their minds that this is possible!” explains Kristin Ditlow, Associate Professor of Vocal Coaching at UNM and Music Director of its Opera Theater. “We have pathways and relationships that get you from school to being a working singer.” Quiara Cortez followed one of those pathways to UNM, where she is now studying. She credits the collaboration with Santa Fe Opera for nurturing her artistic development. “Being able to talk with the best of the best and seeing what our next steps as people who are already in college might be. And having something big and professional to look forward to is wonderful.” KEY CHANGE RECOMMENDED PLAYLIST Where Talent Meets Opportunity: Career Trajectories in Opera with Kristin Ditlow & Jamie Flora What's Opera to a Bunch of High School Students? We often say that the road to a successful opera career can be a winding one—and we've got the receipts to prove it! Join Key Change co-hosts Anna Garcia and Olga Perez Flora as they discuss career trajectories, academic journeys, and artistic life with two legendary performers and educators: Kristin Ditlow, Associate Professor of Vocal Coaching and Opera Conductor at the University Of New Mexico, and James Flora*, acclaimed American tenor and Lecturer in Voice and Opera, also at UNM. Our conversation sets the stage for an exciting collaboration between Santa Fe Opera and UNM. “The position that I have (at UNM) has evolved with me,” says Kristin, who has worked around the world as a conductor and a pianist. “That's a testament to a healthy place that's willing to grow along with its faculty and allow them to grow in a position.” It's also a verdant artistic environment where raw talent is refined, and practice leads to proficiency.   Jamie hopes that the next generation of opera professionals will bring the art form's epic storytelling and staging to a broader audience. “I'd love for opera to step away a little bit from exclusivity,” he says, reflecting on how the perceived cliquishness couldn't be farther from the true experience of a live opera. “A lot of people who grew up in small towns like I did didn't understand the opera was for them,” he says, adding, “Opera's for everyone!” *That surname is no coincidence. Jamie also holds the title of spouse to our very own Olga. Some stories persist for hundreds of years. La Llorona is one such story. Though there is much speculation about where exactly the original story began, it is clear that La Llorona as a legend and myth has staying power. What is it about the weeping woman that has captured our imaginations for centuries? And how has the story of La Llorona changed over time?  Irene Vásquez, chair of the Chicana and Chicano Studies at the University of New Mexico, has a lot to say about why this folk tale is so compelling and how the best stories take on a life of their own.  Mentioned In This Episode:  UNM Chicana and Chicano Studies Southwest Hispanic Research Institute Gloria Anzaldúa's La Llorona story Borderlands/La Frontera by Gloria Anzaldúa COVID-19 version of La Llorona story as referenced in Regeneración: A Xicanacimiento Studies Journal Roots of La Llorona story 2019 La Llorona film set in Guatemala The Curse of La Llorona film “Woman Hollering Creek” La Llorona story by Sandra Cisneros “La Lloroncita” song by Rómulo Castro y el Grupo Tuira For further reading and more resources, view the full show notes. *** We'd love to hear from you! Richard Antoine White (RAW Tuba) is principal tubist with the New Mexico Philharmonic, principal tuba of the Santa Fe Symphony, and a full professor of tuba at the University of New Mexico. But for more reasons than those, he has been an inspiration for those of us familiar with his life and work. For the first four years of his life, he was homeless and living on the streets of Baltimore, yet today his life is one of success and giving. If you don't know of him, I think you will find his story incredibly inspirational. In Part 1, I ask Richard to speak of his early life, first growing up on the streets of Baltimore, then being adopted by his grandparents at the age of four, learning the tuba and entering the Baltimore School for the Arts, and finally studying with David Federle at the Peabody Institute, followed by studies with Daniel Perantoni at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where he was the first African American tubist to earn a doctorate.[Subscriber Content] In Part 2, we follow Richard's journey as he won a spot with the New Mexico Symphony and then, when the orchestra failed, helped to found the New Mexico Philharmonic, of which he is still a member. I ask him about his amazing project, the RAW Tuba Ranch, which will be open for people from the age of 5 to 100. I also ask him about his participation in the Slavery Reenactment project, which changed his view on life. Throughout our conversation, Richard talks about his philosophy of life and his appreciation of hard work. In this episode of Smart Energy Voices, host Debra Chanil talks with Matthew Cherrin, Vice President of Lobo Energy Incorporated - a company owned by the University of New Mexico. Matt's role at Lobo Energy [01:44] Seeing measurable results [05:34] Community buy-in [10:12] Telling the story of sustainability [14:45] Essential partners of the programs [19:34] Creating a sustainable energy plan [25:17] Sustainable energy on campus Lobo Energy is a 501(c)(3) owned by the Board of Regents of the University of New Mexico and falls under the University Research Park Economic Development Act. This legislation has allowed the university to have a district energy plant on its main campus. The plant creates chilled water, electricity, and steam that it sends to the buildings on the main campus.  The university needed a reliable and more efficient system to ensure its hospital would have energy. Lobo Energy has different procurement options than the university, allowing the company to make decisions and receive approval much more quickly than through a normal procurement process.  Monitoring success After Lobo Energy and the University of New Mexico invested in the infrastructure of its district energy system, they also installed some smart metering. Every building has submeters providing data that Lobo Energy uses to measure success. Many people working at Lobo Energy have been there for 14 years, so they understand the buildings, where zero to low-cost energy conservation measures are possible, and where upgrades need to happen.  Because of its monitoring, Lobo Energy is the eyes and ears of the university. The company uses the data to perform an audit and then communicates that effort to the right personnel, whether maintenance or engineers. The engineers, facility management, and planning department can then spend their time on the bigger upgrades while Lobo Energy takes care of the smaller details that add up. Communication and community buy-in A great part of why Lobo Energy is successful is community buy-in. The university would not have seen some of its accomplishments so soon without the people in the buildings communicating and supporting their efforts. At first, people were uncomfortable with the company seemingly trying to turn the lights off on people. As more savings have been reported, they have been able to see the impact of these changes. Now Lobo Energy is seen as part of the University of New Mexico's team.   Resources & People Mentioned Lobo Energy Incorporated University Research Park Economic Development Act Orgs. | 501(c)(3) EnergyCAP EnergyCAP Expands Offering to Include Financial-grade Carbon Accounting Connect with Matt Cherrin On LinkedIn Matthew Cherrin is Vice President of Lobo Energy, Incorporated, which is a University of New Mexico-owned non-profit company. It's Friday, February 17th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) 22 civilians in Congo killed by rebel group On February 12th and 13th, 22 civilians were killed in two separate attacks in Africa's Democratic Republic of Congo. The attacks took place in the conflict-ridden province of Ituri, reports International Christian Concern.  The perpetrators of the attacks, which occurred about twelve hours apart, are suspected to belong to a local rebel group called CODECO, which stands for “Cooperative for Development of the Congo,” which is one of the many militias operating in the east of the country.  Congo is the 37th most dangerous country in the world for Christians. Pray that justice would be done. Proverbs 21:15 says, “When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous, but terror to evildoers.” The story of one Turkish woman On February 12th, an elderly woman approached the Samaritan's Purse site near the location of the Turkish earthquake in need of something to eat as she is diabetic. One of their registered nurses, named Rhonda, who happens to speak Turkish, was able to give her a banana during a brief break from setting up the tents and equipment. More importantly, Rhonda provided a listening ear. The elderly woman shared that she is from another area in Turkey, but that her family lives here. After hearing the news of the devastating earthquakes, she traveled to the city to find her daughter and grandchildren. To her utter dismay, they had all died in the disaster. While speaking with the Samaritan's Purse staff, the woman shed tears and thanked the ministry for coming to Turkey. She offered hugs and kisses before leaving the site in search of somewhere to stay for the night. Her story is heartbreaking, but just one of so many in Turkey today. Daniel Ortega stripped 94 Nicaraguans of citizenship, deports to U.S. Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega stripped 94 Nicaraguans of their citizenship, including some of the Central American country's most celebrated writers and journalists, reports The Guardian. The move was announced by a Nicaraguan judge on February 15th. Last week, 222 political prisoners, including some of Nicaragua's leading opposition activists, were deported from Nicaragua and flown to the U.S. – a move widely interpreted as a sign of Ortega's determination to remain in power after 16 years as president. Nicaragua's government called the deportees, who were also stripped of their citizenship, “traitors to the motherland.” Brian Nichols, the U.S. state department's assistant secretary for western hemisphere affairs, tweeted, “This deplorable act represents a step further away from the democracy the people of Nicaragua deserve.” And speaking to the Washington Post last week, Juan Pappier, with Human Rights Watch, said, “The country is on the verge of becoming the western hemisphere's equivalent of North Korea.” Senator John Fetterman suffering clinical depression Democrat Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania checked himself into Walter Reed Hospital to receive treatment for clinical depression on Wednesday night, reports Breitbart. Adam Jentleson, his chief of staff, said, “While John has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, it only became severe in recent weeks. On Monday, John was evaluated by Dr. Brian Monahan, the Attending Physician of the United States Congress. Yesterday, Dr. Monahan recommended inpatient care at Walter Reed. John agreed, and he is receiving treatment on a voluntary basis.” Fetterman suffered a stroke last year before he won the Pennsylvania Senate race in a highly competitive contest against Dr. Mehmet Oz. His office said this month that he was hospitalized after he felt lightheaded but that tests ruled out another stroke, reports NBC News. 4th abortion complication at University of New Mexico abortion mill On February 15th, Abortion Free New Mexico volunteers documented the fourth abortion complication of 2023 at the University of New Mexico Center for Reproductive Health abortion mill in Albuquerque.   A woman was placed into an ambulance and taken to the emergency room during the lunch hour. This occurred just six days after the last abortion complication that was recorded by the No Sidewalk Without the Savior volunteers.  The steady rate of abortion injuries at this location raises red flags about who is causing these injuries on unsuspecting women, most of whom are traveling there from out of state. It has been well documented by Abortion Free New Mexico that the University of New Mexico participates in the Ryan Residency Training program whose main emphasis is to “ensure the availability of abortion care in hospitals and make sure that all obstetrician-gynecologists are skilled to provide abortion." Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico invited Christian pro-lifers to “join us as we call upon the governing leadership at the University of New Mexico to shut down this dangerous late-term abortion facility." You can sign the petition through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Florida Christian college cancels singers over homosexuality And finally, on February 11th, Pensacola Christian College cancelled The King's Singers, a highly regarded British male a cappella ensemble which sings pop, classical, and sacred music, because one of their singers is an active homosexual, reports CNN. Jonathan Howard, one of the six members of The King's Singers, told The New York Times that two members of the group were homosexual. In a tweet, The King's Singers said, “It has become clear to us, from a flood of correspondence from students and members of the public, that these concerns related to the sexuality of members of our group.” In a responsive tweet, Pensacola Christian College, a private independent Baptist institution, said that it “cannot knowingly give an implied or direct endorsement of anything that violates the Holy Scripture, the foundation of our sincerely held beliefs. Pensacola Christian College cancelled a concert with The King's Singers upon learning that one of the artists openly maintained a lifestyle that contradicts Scripture. “The highly talented musicians were treated with dignity and respect when informed of the cancellation. The artists stated their understanding and acceptance of the change and were given full remuneration.” A section referring to sexuality in the school's articles of faith notes: “We believe that God has commanded that sexual activity be exclusively reserved to a man and a woman who are legally married to each other.” It goes on to say that scripture forbids “sexual immorality including adultery, fornication, homosexuality, bestiality, incest, and the use of pornography.” Because of its Biblical stand, Pensacola Christian College is being called homophobic and unchristian by homosexuals and their supporters, reports ThePinkNews. But Ephesians 5:11 says, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” Take a moment and thank the college's president, Dr. Troy Shoemaker. Few of us wear just one hat, as they say. You might be busy working your 9-to-5 during the day, but focus on being a good romantic partner during your time off. You're a different person when you're unwinding with friends at the pub versus when you're presenting a concept or project in front of your peers and colleagues. These shifts of identity happen multiple times a day, and intersect in unexpected ways.Asa Stone is used to wearing a lot of hats. An educator and Advanced Cicerone from Albuquerque, New Mexico, she explores the spaces where psychology, sociology, and history overlap, all within the context of the beverage industry. From that unique place, she seeks ways in which beer can be used to shine a light on issues of education, social justice, and environmental impact. On today's episode, Asa tells us about her experiences working alongside brewing legends such as Jean Van Roy from Brasserie Cantillon to research how climate change effects Lambic production. She also discusses the role she feels beer can take in promoting positive social change, as well as the importance of science literacy, and how—for her—none of these topics are totally separate from each other.
