She credits the collaboration with Santa Fe Opera for nurturing her artistic development. “Being able to talk with the best of the best and seeing what our next steps as people who are already in college might be. Julie may look confident, but inside, she's anxious — silently struggling.Together, we trace her nerves back to early experiences that shaped her identity, including a pivotal moment when her father, with the best intentions, publicly praised her in a way that became a role she felt expected to play — even at the expense of her own truth. We also talk about how to feel more grounded, expand your stage presence, and create a sense of belonging in front of an audience. If you've ever felt unseen, misrepresented, or not fully yourself in the spotlight, this conversation will speak to you.Click here to check the full show notes.

We often say that the road to a successful opera career can be a winding one—and we've got the receipts to prove it! Join Key Change co-hosts Anna Garcia and Olga Perez Flora as they discuss career trajectories, academic journeys, and artistic life with two legendary performers and educators: Kristin Ditlow, Associate Professor of Vocal Coaching and Opera Conductor at the University Of New Mexico, and James Flora*, acclaimed American tenor and Lecturer in Voice and Opera, also at UNM. Our conversation sets the stage for an exciting collaboration between Santa Fe Opera and UNM. “The position that I have (at UNM) has evolved with me,” says Kristin, who has worked around the world as a conductor and a pianist. “That's a testament to a healthy place that's willing to grow along with its faculty and allow them to grow in a position.” It's also a verdant artistic environment where raw talent is refined, and practice leads to proficiency. Jamie hopes that the next generation of opera professionals will bring the art form's epic storytelling and staging to a broader audience. “I'd love for opera to step away a little bit from exclusivity,” he says, reflecting on how the perceived cliquishness couldn't be farther from the true experience of a live opera. “A lot of people who grew up in small towns like I did didn't understand the opera was for them,” he says, adding, “Opera's for everyone!” *That surname is no coincidence. Jamie also holds the title of spouse to our very own Olga. In this episode of Monique on the Mic, we explore the surprising benefits of recording your singing. Join me, Monique B. Thomas, as I share how self-recording can bridge the gap between perception and reality in your vocal technique. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced singer, recording allows for immediate feedback and insight into areas needing improvement. Learn from my experiences with artists like Damien, who transitioned from songwriter to singer through diligent practice and recording. Plus, I'll cover essential tips for setting up a home studio and using DAWs like GarageBand and Audacity. Don't miss this chance to elevate your vocal game!RESOURCES:Low cost studio set up : The idea is just to get started. This will not give you studio quality, but it will allow you to get used to recording your voice quickly. Don't forget to use garage band (Mac) or Audacity (pc). There are other DAW's as well. 1 Shure SM58 mic - roughly 110€xlr cable - roughly 20€Scarlett Focusrite solo Audio Interface - This connects your mic to your computer - roughly 90€ - 120€headphone, you can use any pair you have that plugs in via mini jack or get a better one for around 100€.If need be, you can use a cheaper mic. Just keep in mind the idea is to get used to recording quickly. Obviously, the better the equipment the better you will sound. The cheapest version and also the lowest quality will be using your phone. Don't over think this. Start where you are and buy better equipment little by little and on a need basis, unless money is not an issue. I decided to contact Inês because I'd been listening to her podcast, Your voice matters, for a while. I was even more excited to discover that the first episodes were in Portuguese, because it means I have some more interesting content to listen to that will help me improve my Portuguese and learn about other voice-related topics! But originally, our interview wasn't going to be about that. I wanted to talk about voice coaching. We covered topics such as getting used to hearing your own voice and practising how you want to sound before you actually speak in public. Also, how we can use our voice to communicate our personality, even if we're feeling nervous about the language. We can adopt vocal habits in another language that aren't ours and it's liberating when we learn to move past this.We also discuss why Inês decided to start a podcast, why she switched the language after the first two seasons, how she did it, what the process was like for her, and what advice she would give to people who are thinking about creating content in another language.I also love one of the things that Inês said at the beginning when we were talking about her career journey. It's important to craft content that resonates with viewers, making them want to come back for more. With shows like The Voice and The Masked Singer, there is an art to constructing relatable stories that resonate with the audience. Not only does he equip them with technical skills, but he also recognises the significance of their psychological health. Jono is committed to providing singers with the resources they need to navigate the industry with resilience and confidence. On The Voice, the celebrity coaches offer valuable insights into the direction they envision for their singers. They share their creative input with Jono and the other vocal coaches. Jono then tailors his coaching to align with the artist's and celebrity coach's vision. The celebrity coaches are very competitive and genuinely want one of their singers to win. The three things you need to succeed in TV vocal coaching are experience, adaptability and collaborative skills. Find Your Voice and Rock Your Confidence with Vocal Coach Sloane Reali
This podcast is dedicated to teaching you how to find your authentic voice, grow your confidence and unlock your potential creating life changing results. I share weekly tips, tricks, guest interviews, and over 2 decades of helping people just like you learn how to express themselves from a holistic and empowered space.
Have you ever had the experience where you open your mouth to speak, and the voice that comes out of your mouth is barely recognizable?Or have you ever heard yourself on a recording and thought, “Whoa! Is that what I sound like?!” These experiences aren't exactly the same as the gender dysphoria many trans people experience in their lives, but they are as close as I can get to helping you connect to the feeling of vocal gender dysphoria. So what do we do about it? How do we help a girl whose voice has dropped? Or a boy who is the only one of his friends whose voice hasn't changed at all? Vocal Coaching. Vocal coaching isn't a quick fix. It takes diligence, time, practice and more practice to transition a voice. The traditional medical model of weekly visits with a Speech Language Pathologist can take up to three years to complete the transition. So thank goodness there is more than one model to transition a voice. Today's campfire guest is Nicole Gress, MS, CCC-SLP. Nicole is white and uses she/they pronouns. They are the queer, trans founder and CEO of Undead Voice. Undead Voice is an online platform empowering and educating trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse folks to create a voice that aligns with their identity. Undead Voice's mission is to increase access to trans healthcare by making voice transition resources affordable, accessible, and affirming. Nicole's model for vocal transition is innovative, and creative - and does my favorite thing - creates community for those who participate.Check out the full episode to hear about:Where the traditional model of voice transition falls shortWhy access, affordability, and community were Nicole's main goals when developing Undead Voice LabWhy Nicole uses non-gendered language when talking about voices and voice goalsWhy they say it's important for people to continue to be able to access their full vocal rangeHow the program addresses the emotional and mental components of voice transition to help people achieve their goalsFind out more about Nicole Gress, MS, CCC-SLP:Undead Voice LabTikTok: @undead.voiceInstagram: @undead.voiceUndead Voice Lab FAQsUndead Voice Lab Video QuestionnaireFind out more about Mackenzie Dunham:Wildheartsociety.orgwildheartsociety.org/downloadsWild Heart Society on FacebookWild Heart Society on Instagram
