Easily identified by his elephant head, pot belly and four arms, Ganesha has many fine attributes and is revered as the remover of obstacles and the god of beginnings. As Hindus prepare to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi (the birth of Lord Ganesha), Mobeen Azhar is joined by Hindu monk Swamini Supriyananda, Dr David Frawley (Founder of the American Institute of Vedic Studies) and by Dr Raj Balkaran (Teacher and Consultant at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies). She received level 2 authorisation from Sharathji Jois in 2010. She also is an avid student of yoga philosophy as well as running an ethical textile business working with local Indian woman to ensure fair conditions and pay. In this podcast Nea and Adam are discussing the female menstrual cycle. As a man, you may notice him floundering at points. However, as a teacher of many women he thought it an extremely important subject to learn about. Nea has been personally involved in charting her own cycle for a number of years now to her own benefit. She discusses the importance of honouring her cycle and the natural ebb and flow of life it suggests. Therefore, instead of trying to gloss over these cycles, to homogonise our lives it makes more sense to use these natural, biological patterns of the body accordingly and follow their guidance. As they say, there is a season for everything. It appears through our conversation, it is only when you respect and even embrace the winter and spring, that you can also then enjoy the summer. Nea is currently completing a three-year Yoga History and Philosophy program (Traditional Yoga Studies) and one-year certificate in Ayurveda (American Institute of Vedic Studies).  Her aim is to empower and inspire students to learn, explore and grow along their own very personal path of yoga, uncovering what brings balance and joy and keeps the flame of yoga burning bright.

Today's podcast is a daring conversation about a hot topic. But hopefully, casts a light of hope for everyone. With Gary O' Toole, an astrologer based in Galway Ireland, we will talk about traveling with the stars. Gary takes us to an enlightening ride to understanding astrological perspectives and how they view what’s happening around us right now. Despite still getting a weird look when he talks about what he's doing, Gary loves his craft and practices Indian astrology and what he calls timeline astrology. Like the way yoga was a weird place 20 years ago, Gary decided to just follow this interest and a teacher studying the stars and planets because, to him, he gets a sense of release with astrology. It frees him to be who he is and to be in the moment. Gary and Alex looking at how astrology was reduced to horoscopes that claim a one fits all. Instead, it’s true nature; it’s about reading those patterns and using them as a guide to the person we’re becoming. No one astrologer can predict 100% accurately. Astrology is like describing the same thing using two different languages but still using the same alphabet. Different perspectives, different outer travels to guide one inner journey. Looking at 2020, astrologers see that we’re in the conjunction of Jupiter (expansion) and Saturn (contraction). Jupiter is in line with the philosophy of expansiveness and abundance while Saturn is more in line with the stoic philosophy. In history, looking at those times when all planets have come together, it’s marked with epidemics and upheavals. But what message do we really want to pick up from these? To Gary, it is both an opportunity and a responsibility that he may be able to predict but he will always have to skirt a fine line between not scaring people but preparing them at the same time. There's enough fear already. And so we have to focus our eyes on what other messages are in front of us. Saturn is showing us that, ultimately, things are all good. Things have to happen in a certain way. Sometimes we don't like the way they happen but it has to happen that way. And 2020 has been a very good time to really look inside and see where we're measuring ourselves. Coming from different practices, there’s one wisdom Gary and Alex share: Step back. Let's be grateful for the things that we have as we have them. It’s always helpful to align a little bit out of the self-consciousness into the bigger consciousness by just noticing that you're not alone. Worry not, there's an energetic movement in the skies and everywhere. Links mention in the podcast Gary’s website Watch video of the podcast Support me on Patreon and receive great gifts! Limited Offer – Join Now Ayurvedic Cleanse And Bring One Friend For Free   Podcast Highlights You are who you are. You can have a million different labels and each one could bring a different aspect of you. But Indian astrology brought out a map of my life. It was amazing that my life can be explained by the planets and how they move. - Gary O’Toole Astrology is like looking at a person from many different angles. But it isn't about pinning you down and labeling you, it's more about the timeline, about timing things and decisions. In ancient India, astrology was used to time rituals. - Gary O’Toole It is a pivotal year. But it's like we're turning a corner; it's going to be some years before we can see that corner in the distance and see where we've come around. - Gary O’Toole Simplifying life: 2020 has helped me clear out all the things I thought I needed to do in my life. The biggest lesson of Saturn and Capricorn this year is about sustainability-- what can you keep doing every day. - Gary O’Toole Astrology has always been for me a double-edged sword. It's solving a problem and at the same time, when you've addressed something, you can no longer pretend that it's not happening. The more important thing is to be open. Astrologers will give you different stories based on what they're looking at. You can take whatever from that. - Gary O’Toole We're all human. We all have traits that we can see as we have in common. But astrology is about what we want to extract out of this moment, what personality traits we want to emphasize, what is being emphasized in these timelines. It's not so much about who you are, but who you're becoming. - Gary O’Toole Sometimes the best of the best seems to be the worst of the worst at that time. Like a prediction of my death. I went past that date but it helped me a lot in life. I think that as a possibility, and it completely changed the way I lived my life. That way, it helped me, but it was also highly unethical. - Gary O’Toole   Guest BIO: Gary O’Toole is a Vedic (Indian) astrologer living in Galway Island, Ireland. He trained in counselling and studied Ayurveda with the American Institute of Vedic Studies and at the International Academy of Ayurveda. He is a member of the British Association of Vedic Astrology and lectured at their annual conference. Gary practices timeline astrology and  has authored a book titled Cosmic Bodies: The Ayurvedic Astrology Guide to Health & Well-Being, available on Amazon and am currently working on a book about timing techniques titled Timeline Astrology. He writes everyday to share to people what he reads about planets which is soon to be available in an app!

On a yoga sabbatical in 2003 I learned the power of food. While trying to live the true yogic life, I found my way to an Ashram in India and lived with a family who taught me the ritual of making the morning meal. The preparation taught me how to make simple traditional meals. Food is seen as communal and rich in custom; the rite of practice. A time to slow down and be conscious of what we consume; recognizing the energy we create. A whole new universe opened up to me of how important food was. My practice had been getting on a mat in order to reawaken the body and energy. With this experience, I began to awaken to the energy of food. This was the dream… to share that awakening with the community in Key West and beyond. In the progression of this yogic life, I have found my Dharma. My life’s purpose. Transforming simple ingredients into foods that heal your body, mind and nourish the soul. I am extremely blessed to share this with others. Nicolai has been teaching Sanskrit, chanting, yoga philosophy and Ayurveda since 1994. He has authored several books on Sanskrit and Yoga Philosophy. Today, we sat down to talk about the importance of Sanskrit within the yoga tradition.5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE1- To go deep in yoga you have to start learning Sanskrit. You have to include something more than posture. Not only does it shows you respect the practice and the tradition, but the name of the pose carry information about the intended experience.2- The pronunciation of the language is of the highest priority. The vibrating energy of the words expresses prana and carries the meaning of the word. 3- When doing mantras, If you pronounce the words wrong it changes the intention, so make sure you pronounce it correctly and find a teacher that can help you.4- Rhythm is build in the language. Words are broken down in syllables. have long and short sounds. and are done at different tones (low to high) It breaks out the monotony and helps retrain and learn information.5- When studying the Yoga Sutras, learn the sound of the verses first. As you chant the sutras, all the information it carries will come forward. The sound is associated with the meaning.QUESTIONS HE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE :What is Sanskrit, where/when it originated… what should we know about it?Is it a dead language? How does knowing Sanskrit add to our practice?Do you think teachers in the west should use it more than they are?If people want to learn Sanskrit, where should they start? Why is Sanskrit pronunciation important?Does the placement of the tongue helps activate the energy channel? What are the most mispronounced words? What are the symbols that can help us know how to pronounce? Why is the musicality important?Do you believe it’s essential to do mantras in Sanskrit? In traditions like Kundalini Yoga, the chant and mantras are in Gurmukhi instead of Sanskrit. “The concept of systems of control, and their role in limiting the expansion of human consciousness, is fundamental to the investigations and revelations found within the Golgotha current. There exists distinct control mechanisms in place on both exoteric & esoteric levels of reality with obscure Pathways to self transformation and self-realization. Ahrimanic and Asuric in nature, these systems of control are Insidious, parasitic, and self-perpetuating, existing in a virus like level of awareness. The important work of Rudolf Steiner has extensively explored this concept and its implications, and this influence runs deep within the Golgotha current. What most individuals consider reality is in most cases a tightly-controlled manufactured mirage. These surreptitious systems of control exist in obvious exoteric paradigms such as governments, educational systems, organized religions as well as in consensual constructs of social awareness which are steadily reinforced by the receptive exoteric control paradigms. The systems of control which are initially the most dangerous function on the subtle esoteric level, inhibiting the expansion of human consciousness and clouding the mental atmospheres. These subtle control structures are often hibernating within seemingly harmless systems of spiritual expression, and are activated by an unbalanced egoic state of perception or by an individual who exists in a state of disharmony on a mental and or physical level. It is extremely important for individuals to become aware of such esoteric systems of control, and seek to recognize the signs and symptoms of such mechanisms of manipulations. My previous text, Entering the Desert, contains important information on such issues and the various complications that may arise if such parasitic control mechanisms are not addressed." ~ excerpt from Cult of Golgotha by Craig Williams In this discussion, Craig elaborates upon this passage from Cult of Golgotha and explains more about the the following. The difference between exoteric vs esoteric paradigms. Exoteric Systems of control in areas such as Government, educational systems, organized religion and how they play a role in limiting and controlling self-realization. Esoteric paradigms and control structures. Ahrimanic and asuric systems of control and MORE. This episode video can be watched on YouTube: https://youtu.be/_XbZtvAZ_HA Craig Williams (a.k.a. If experience is of the utmost importance, as it is in Buddhism, then what role does experience play in Sanatana Dharma and knowing Krishna as the highest? Why do we have this material body? What is unconditional love, and why does God desire it? How does personal intuition play into Sanatana Dharma? In this practical and philosophical interview which encourages free-thinking and reflection, Sri Acharya shares his knowledge and wisdom with ease. What Is Special About Jessica It seems to me Yoga choose Jessica rather than the other way around. She had a great job in Paris in IT, she travelled all the time, and she was making money. But a workshop with David Swenson and meeting Pattabhi Jois in London between 2000 and 2002 changed everything. She could not believe how people would show up early in the morning to "sweat together", and practice this dynamic form of hatha yoga. And she liked it. So she started practicing and traveling to Mysore and meeting people and ... She  joined Yoga Thailand in its early stages as a teacher and by invitation! and met Tiwari who is one of the most serious and advanced practitioners of pranayama in the world today. That, meeting Tiwari, is something I envy her for (in a good way of course) because she got to study under direct supervision from him... they still talk on the phone. What We talked About Jessica's life in the corporate world, working for IT and traveling most of the time How she started getting into yoga slowly Her workshop with David Swenson clarifies things for her Her visit to London to take Pattabhi Jois's tour classes India An Invitation to Teach and "take over for a few months" Yoga Thailand!!! I mean. Wow. Her yoga sabbatical, and did she fear running out of money? What is it like to learn directly from Pranayama World Authority Tiwari? Opening her own studio in 2008 in New Orleans Getting married and having a baby The delivery story - It was painful but not as crazy as some videos women get to watch... How the studio is doing today What took Jessica a long time to understand. Books Jessica Recommends on The Podcast Prakriti: Your Ayurvedic Constitution (Your Ayurvedic Constitution Revised Enlarged Second Edition) Paperback - by Dr. Robert Svoboda Prakriti It means "nature" in Sanskrit. Dr. Svoboda, says Jessica, is a great writer, very entertaining, very clear and practical.  He is a teacher and a yogi. Ayurveda The Science Of Self Healing by Vasan Lad.  Jessica says this one is for those of us interested in learning more about the pulse, and a good introduction. Ayurvedic Nutrition - By Atreya Smith, one of Jessica's teacher. This book is  clear on diet and the benefits of it. ANOTHER BOOK WE MENTION IN THE PODCAST: The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World's Healthiest People by Dan Buettner (Here is the interview James did with Buettner on living to 100) About Jessica Her Studio in New Orleans Her book: Yoga Thailand's Healthy Lifestyle Cooking  I've tried recipes from this book for the past five years, in between visits to Ko Samui, and they are delicious and packed with nutrition. A Meal Plan to eat healthy she is offering for free Twitter Facebook Instragram Youtube Samahita Retreat - or Yoga Thailand Transcript Claudia A. Altucher:   Hello and welcome to the Yoga Podcast. Today I have for my guest Jessica Blanchard. She is the founder of Balance Yoga and Wellness in New Orleans. She is a trained yogi for years, authorized by Pattabhi Jois in the Ashtanga yoga tradition. She has also studied at Yoga Thailand under Paul and Jutima Dallaghan, and also Master Tiwari, one of the most authoritative authorities in Pranayama in the world. And Jessica has an interest in Ayurveda. She is a member of NAMA, the national organization which governs and protects Ayurveda here in the United States, and she studied at the European Institute of Vedic Studies and Ayurveda as well. She's a co-author of Yoga Thailand's Healthy Lifestyle cookbook, which is in Amazon, and Jessica had the life I think I wish I had when I was in the corporate world. Jessica, welcome to the Yoga Podcast. Jessica Blanchard:      [Laughter] Thank you, Claudia. Claudia A. Altucher:   It's great to have you. So I want to ask you – I'm insanely curious. You started practicing around '99, 2000 – is that so? Jessica Blanchard:      That's right, yeah. Claudia A. Altucher:   And you had a job. Jessica Blanchard:      Oh, yeah, yeah. I worked at Accenture, which is a big consulting firm, multinational. And at that time I was based in Europe Claudia A. Altucher:   Where in Europe? Jessica Blanchard:      Well, in southern France. Officially my base was called Sophia Antipolis, which is close to Nice, so – but I was traveling a lot because most of the clients were in other places. It was kind of a pan-European office, so I would travel to, say, Dublin, Ireland – that's actually where I was when I first started Ashtanga yoga, and… Claudia A. Altucher:   Uh-huh. So do you speak French? Jessica Blanchard:      Yes, I do. Claudia A. Altucher:   So were you born in France, or – Jessica Blanchard:      No, no, I was born in Louisiana, and there's a strong connection between South Louisiana and France 'cause it was originally settled by the French. So I always had a fascination with France. My grandmother spoke French; she spoke Cajun French. Claudia A. Altucher:   Oh. Jessica Blanchard:      Yeah, but I learned it in school, maybe starting when I was 13, and I did spend some time over in France when I was in university, in eastern France, in Noce, which is a small place not too many people go to, but it was great because I learned to speak really well 'cause there weren't too many foreigners. I made very good friends there. Claudia A. Altucher:   That's great. But let me ask you – so did you live in Paris with your job because you were living there, or did they hire you, or how did that happen? Jessica Blanchard:      That happened – they hired me in New York, and – Claudia A. Altucher:   I see, and you spoke French. And your job was IT, right – IT related? Jessica Blanchard:      Yes, it was. It was very different, and I really didn't know what I was getting into when I started. I was a sociology and French major, in a small school outside of Philadelphia, an all-women's college. And I managed to do well in the interviews – I don't know how – 'cause I didn't – Claudia A. Altucher:   That's great. Jessica Blanchard:      Yeah, and I – Claudia A. Altucher:   But you know, the thing is, I also had a job in IT, so I remember reading your bio – it must've been 2006 or so – and going, “Oh, my God, she is like what I want to do.” It's amazing. I mean, I think you were in Dublin one day and you take a workshop with – well, tell us. Who did you take a workshop with? Jessica Blanchard:      Well, this was actually – first it was just a yoga teacher. I am having trouble remembering her name, 'cause she doesn't teach Ashtanga anymore. But my first Ashtanga classes were with her – her name was Paula; that's right – and then soon after that I took a workshop with David Swenson. He was probably one of the first – the first ever yoga workshop I took, and that was in early 2000, I think January of 2000. I still remember it was very cold and dark – Claudia A. Altucher:   Yeah. Jessica Blanchard:      ______ Dublin, and it was ______ gym. But there were all these people. I was surprised because it didn't seem like many people did yoga. There were no yoga studios. All of the classes were in very cold church halls or gyms. We would push the equipment out of the way. The first time I met Paul was at this very funny gym; there was carpet on the floor and he was traveling and teaching there. But – Claudia A. Altucher:   And David Swenson is like a huge – is like – within the Ashtanga yoga world, probably everyone has seen his book because he teaches both the primary and the intermediate series in that book with modifications. So for those of us who can't get into the pretzel, he has sort of like side images so that you feel like, okay, yeah, I can do this, and it's very reassuring. Jessica Blanchard:      Yes, and he's a very – yeah, he makes yoga very accessible, so it's been – yeah – nice. Claudia A. Altucher:   And something happened to you there, like you caught the Ashtanga bug. You liked it Jessica Blanchard:      I loved it. I really did. I can't exactly say why. I think it's a constellation of factors about it: the moving, the breath, the fact that it does require – because it's physical, you concentrate. It requires concentration. And there was less talk and fluffiness and I think – Claudia A. Altucher:   Yes. [Laughter] Jessica Blanchard:      And it's interesting 'cause in Europe I feel like yoga was less fluffy than it is in the US since – you know, now I moved back in 2007, but Ashtanga – to me it seems like it's a little more popular in Europe than it is here in the US.
