Devotion : Proverbs 15:17 / Veggies & Friends by Community Lutheran Church
Welcome to one of the Bible's best (and shortest) books, the Book of Jonah, the one where a guy survives inside a whale! It's a funny book! Its authors were fully aware of that. Jonah: relatably lazy, yet attempting to outsail his counterpart Odysseus? Dumb and Dumber: "You drove [1,300 miles] in the wrong direction ... and totally redeem yourself!" What kind of whale? This has been researched! This silly story is worthy of a Veggie Tales movie ... ... yet has much to say about Hell and social justice. Intro music: "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" by Relient K. We also still have a Patreon (currently dormant and not charging money, but there's a bunch of old episodes on there) and a Bluesky and Instagram.

In 2018, Bess and her partner Jack, founded BESS in Paddington, a floristry celebrating Australian native wildflowers and honouring her family's legacy, convincing customers one at a time how amazing native Australian flowers are. Bess lives, works, and creates stunning installations and bouquets in Sydney with her now husband Jack and their two daughters, on the lands of Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. Before we get into Bess' chat, Emily and Maddie are chatting Proteas, Sydney Flower Market, pierre de ronsard roses, borage, Flannel flowers, edible violets and pansies, Emma Bowen's amazing blueberries at Sunday Farm, why you should maybe not blend your bananas with your blueberries. Logan Holloman | Next Gen Pastor | July 19, 2026 9am Referenced Scripture: Romans 14:1–9, 2 Timothy 2:22–26 Reflection Questions: 1. Where do you see yourself most tempted to make secondary issues feel like primary issues?(Examples: politics, worship styles, parenting, schooling, spiritual gifts, cultural preferences, personal convictions.) Follow-up: Why do you think we are so quick to turn differences of conviction into judgments about someone's faith? 2. Romans 14:3 says, “God has accepted them.” How should remembering that God has welcomed someone change the way we approach believers who think differently than we do? Follow-up: What is the difference between "accepting" someone and simply "agreeing" with someone? 3. Paul says, “Who are you to judge someone else's servant?” (Romans 14:4). Where are you most tempted to take a role that belongs only to Jesus? Follow-up: What does it look like practically to trust Jesus as Lord over someone else's spiritual growth instead of trying to control it? 4. Romans 14:8 says, “Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” How does belonging to Jesus change the way we hold our convictions, opinions, and freedoms? Follow-up: What is one area where Jesus may be inviting you to move from being "right" toward being more like Him? What's your next step? Connect: We'd love to connect with you! The revised fig book is now on Kickstarter The special hardcover edition of Grow Figs Where You Think You Can't and registration for the October 15 and 22 Fig Camp are available now. A lower-priced softcover will follow this fall. See the book and Fig Camp options.---Food plants are usually assigned to the vegetable patch, while ornamental borders are expected to sit there and look respectable. Garden designer Harry Holding sees no good reason for such strict garden zoning.Harry is the author of Eat Your Garden: Edimentals as a Beautiful, Low-Effort Way to Grow Food. Edimentals are plants that are both edible and ornamental, allowing us to grow food throughout a garden without giving up colour, texture, structure, or beauty. Harry is the founder of Harry Holding Studio, and his School Food Matters Garden at the 2023 RHS Chelsea Flower Show received a Silver-Gilt medal and the People's Choice Award. In this conversation, Harry explains how edible plants can create a foraging or grazing experience right outside the door. We talk about designing in layers, using constraints to make plant choices easier, and creating ecologically rich plant communities that cover the soil and leave less room for weeds.Harry also shares ideas for small gardens, courtyards, balconies, and containers. His approach is to imagine the space planted first, then carve out the paths, seating areas, morning-coffee spots, and evening gin-and-tonic headquarters. We talk about:What an edimental plant is Why food can be a gateway to connecting with nature Combining edible plants with ornamental garden design Structural plants, seasonal highlights, and ground-cover layers Using colour, texture, height, and growing conditions as useful constraints Designing abundant edible gardens in small spaces Why annual vegetables sometimes struggle in established perennial plantings Questioning gardening rules and learning through experiments How to begin adding edimentals to an existing garden Harry also talks about some fascinating edible ornamentals, including Saskatoon berries, sea kale, sochan, king's spear, Korean aster, citron daylily, lamb's ear, hostas, chives, and bladder campion. His parting advice is simple: make a little room, try unfamiliar plants, and grow what brings you joy. A garden should not become another stern supervisor. It should be a place that makes your heart sing.

Paul Skenes had a very weird interaction with a reporter last night. During his media availability, a reporter called him a "future Yankee". Crowley says that this is the only sport where that happens. The reporter was chastised by many in the Pittsburgh media. The All Star Game is meant to be fun and now it has been tarnished for Pirates fans. Jeff Passan said that the new format was going to suck, Bryce Harper kicked Rob Manfred out of a locker room, and Paul Skenes was told he is going to be a future Yankee. This is where we are in baseball right now. Crowley says we are entering a very dark period in the sport. What is the thing that snakes live in called? Crowley breaks down his top four moments from the Pirates' first half of the season. Bryan Reynolds' walk-off home run vs old friend Derek Shelton, Esmerlyn Valdez's grand slam, Tyler Callihan hitting his home run off Shohei Ohtani, and Ryan O'Hearn's 3 home runs and 10 RBIs make up the list. A lot of people texted in that Konnor Griffin's RBI double in his debut should have been among Crowley's best moments. This is the most fun Pirates team to watch since when? Even though there have been some really bad losses so far this year, they have been a lot of fun to watch. Nick Yorke's walk off single in the series against the Orioles is another honorable mention. Crowley says don't eat your veggies unless you cook them. There is something going around and veggies are to blame. Apple Cider season is almost upon us meaning it is almost time for football.

The Space Show Presents Dr. Ryan Dowdy re ISS & Artemis Astronaut Food, May 15, 2026, FridayQuick Summary:The Space Show featured Dr. Ryan Dowdy, a former NASA ISS Food System Manager, discussing food in space and his commercial food company ReadyBar. Dowdy explained how NASA's 20-person team in Houston produces all space food, with 60+ signatures required for each item due to government regulations. He detailed the challenges of providing nutrition for astronauts, including the need for 500-calorie meal replacement bars and the importance of fresh food for psychological well-being. The discussion covered topics like packaging limitations, radiation effects on food, and the potential for growing food in space. Dowdy also shared information about his company ReadyBar, which makes meal-replacement bars designed to replace an entire meal with 30 grams of protein and 15 grams of fiber for $5.99, currently sold online with plans to expand to retailers and Amazon. The conversation explored how commercial space companies are developing their own food systems and the need for continued R&D investment in space food technology.Detailed Summary:Ryan discussed the challenges and innovations in providing food for astronauts, particularly focusing on NASA's ISS and Artemis missions. He explained how meal replacement bars became popular due to cost and packaging efficiency considerations, noting that 60% of food weight on the ISS was packaging that was discarded. Ryan described his work at NASA from 2016, where he helped update the food menu by adding more fish, fruits, and vegetables to address astronauts' nutritional needs for omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. The discussion concluded with Ryan sharing how he initially became interested in space food science through a professor's suggestion to directly ask NASA about their challenges rather than proposing solutions without understanding their needs.Ryan also discussed his experience as the ISS Food System Manager at NASA's Space Food Systems Laboratory, explaining how food scientists create meals designed to last up to two years in space. He described the process of working with astronauts to taste and rank approximately 200 menu items, noting that while shrimp cocktail was a popular choice, the Russian crew preferred more soup in their meals, leading to food exchanges between the two teams. When asked about future food options for space missions, Ryan clarified that while no insects were consumed on the ISS during his tenure, there is potential for growing food in space, though current plant growth experiments like the Veggie system didn't provide sufficient daily calories. He concluded that while space food systems aren't ready for long-duration missions like Mars yet, continued research through initiatives like the Deep Space Food Challenge is necessary.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentWe use Zoom phone numbers for program participation. For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access. The Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc.
