Today's show gets a little spicy as Heather calls into question the dieting trends over the past 50 years and where they came from. You'll be shocked to hear who really came up with the low-carb trend. You may even be a little frustrated to learn how some who advocated for eating a certain way have changed their minds as they "reconsider" the science. The question Heather brings us back to today is: What does the Bible say about food? Does the Bible tell us we have to follow whatever food rules are trendy in order to be a good "steward" of our bodies? Does God care about how we eat? Who should we listen to when it comes to taking care of our bodies? There's some big revelations and many questions in today's episode. Consider pausing or journaling your thoughts as you listen to help you find or make peace with food. Have you read the 40-Day Body Image Workbook yet? Many of today's concepts are connected to principles, stories, and charts found in this fantastic new resource. Learn more here: https://www.improvebodyimage.com/40-Day-Body-Image-Workbook-Christian or drop Heather an email (Heather @ Comparedtowho.me) if you'd like to read through the book with a group starting May 21st. In this episode we learn that the Mediterranean diet is really a mix of cuisines from some varied and ancient cultures, 21 to be exact and that Maesters have found this diet to hold health benefits. I speak to the teachings of the Maester Ancel Keys, and the Maesters from our previous episodes T Colin Campbell and Dan Buettner who talked about primarily plant-based eating and the blue zones, where people lived the longest and yes, the locations of Greece and Italy were on that very small list.I love that they teach us that eating a whole primarily plant-based way of eating has so many benefits. They proport the benefits of great health and longevity. And I will add that it's not only the food, but the lifestyle that rounds out this diet. A relaxed existence and a nice walk. So, as I prep for my walks and hikes and I meditate to the Maester Tamara Levitt, I will leave you with the words from the Maester I love and respect, T Colin Campbell, "A good diet is the most powerful weapon we have against disease and sickness."(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancel_Keys, 2023)(https://health.usnews.com/best-diet/mediterranean-diet, 2023)Let's go, let's get it done. What's The Best Group Of Whole Foods For Decreasing Inflammation? T. Colin Campbell, PhD• https://nutritionstudies.org/ • Book - China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long Term Health #TColinCampbell#ChinaStudy #PlantBased #WoleFoodDiet T. Colin Campbell, PhD has been dedicated to the science of human health for more than 60 years. His primary focus is on the association between diet and disease, particularly cancer. Although largely known for the China Study — one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted, and recognized by The New York Times as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology” — Dr. Campbell's profound impact also includes extensive involvement in education, public policy, and laboratory research. Dr. Campbell grew up on a dairy farm and was the first in his family to go to college, where he studied pre-veterinary medicine at Pennsylvania State University. After obtaining his bachelor's degree, and while completing his first year at the University of Georgia veterinary school, he received a telegram from a well known professor at Cornell University, offering a scholarship and research opportunity too good to turn down. And so he completed his education at Cornell University (M.S., Ph.D.) and MIT (Research Associate) in nutrition, biochemistry and toxicology. He then spent 10 years on the faculty of Virginia Tech's Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition before returning to Cornell in 1975 where he presently holds his Endowed Chair as the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry in the Division of Nutritional Sciences. Dr. Campbell's research experience includes both laboratory experiments and large-scale human studies. He has received over 70 grant-years of peer-reviewed research funding (mostly with NIH), served on grant review panels of multiple funding agencies, actively participated in the development of national and international nutrition policy, and authored over 300 research papers. Throughout his career, he has confronted a great deal of confusion surrounding nutrition and its effects. It is precisely this confusion that he has focused so much on, in recent years. In order to synthesize the findings of his long and rewarding career, and to give back to the public whose lives are threatened by rampant misinformation and special interests, Dr. Campbell co-wrote The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health, which has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. He is also the author of the The New York Times bestseller Whole, and The Low-Carb Fraud. Several documentary films feature Dr. Campbell and his research, including Forks Over Knives, Eating You Alive, Food Matters, and PlantPure Nation. He continues to share evidence-based information on health and nutrition whenever given the opportunity. He has delivered hundreds of lectures around the world and he is the founder of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and the online Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate in partnership with eCornell. To Contact Dr. T. In 1753 a Scottish doctor named James Lind published Treatise of the Scurvy where he named oranges and lemons as cures for the disease. However, it wasn't until 1912 when researcher Casimir Funk published The Etiology of Deficiency Diseases, introducing the concept of illness as a result of something lacking in the body, a concept unknown during Lind's initial study of scurvy. Since then, major vitamins and their health effects were discovered and recommendations for vitamin intake were made. Wellness Expert Jovanka Ciares shows us how to reclaim wellness to live our best life. Her new book is Reclaiming Wellness: Ancient Wisdom For Your Healthy, Happy and Beautiful life. Many of the most popular approaches to mind, body, and spirit wellness are rooted in age-old practices from around the world and come from communities of color. But more often than not, they are primarily marketed to and used by the cultural elite. Certified wellness expert and author Jovanka Ciares reclaims these time- and science-proven modalities and makes them easy to implement for all, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, income, or social status. "The lack of representation within the wellness industry is palpable, from practitioners and advocates to brands that seemingly cater to only one type of audience — wealthy, white Westerners," writes Ciares. "Wellness is not for the privileged few. Wellness is a state of living that applies to all living creatures — humans, animals, and plants. And the most popular wellness practices have been practiced for millennia by people worldwide." Reclaiming Wellness highlights the multicultural roots of various popular health trends and shares them to promote solidarity and inclusivity. The book includes fascinating historical context for wellness practices like herbalism, meditation, visualization, hypnosis, yoga, plant- based eating, sound healing, and more. Will oils cause heart disease? Are omega 6 fats inflammatory? There are few questions as hotly debated, even amongst health practitioners, as the subject of which oils - and how much - are beneficial, or even safe to eat. But is it REALLY a controversy in the research? Maybe not…and what the science says might actually surprise you. Which is why I asked my fave nutrition science communicator, Dr Matthew Nagra ND, to break down the latest scientific evidence on oils and fats in human nutrition. Dr Nagra is deeply committed to using the best scientific evidence to inform plant-based nutrition practice. No “one off” lab studies here! We go deep into the decades of research on the role of fat and oils and after listening to this, you're going to wonder why the internet is so all over the place in its recommendations. About Dr Nagra: Dr. Matthew Nagra is a Naturopathic Doctor devoted to bringing the most up-to-date evidence-based nutrition information to his patients at his clinic in Vancouver. In 2018 he graduated from the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine after completing his bachelor's of Science in Microbiology at the University of Victoria. He's certified in plant-based nutrition through eCornell and the T Colin Campbell's Center for Nutrition Studies. Dr. Nagra is also a public speaker and is known for his content across multiple social media platforms, where he often tackles misinformation around diet and nutrition, and deep dives into the latest nutrition research. On this episode we chat about: What's the deal with no oil plant based diets? The research on the safety + health benefits of consuming oils Why ‘compared to what' is an important question in evaluating research studies What role does fat actually play in the diet? The best oils for lowering risk of cardiovascular disease What is an essential fatty acid and where do we get them? The whole omega 3/6 situation, cuz do you really get it? The surprising impact of saturated fats on your gut microbiome! Is extra virgin olive oil overhyped? What about coconut oil or MCTs? Where fats fit in Dr Nagra's personal diet Whether there is a place for keto diets in clinical nutrition Support the Pod! We couldn't make this podcast happen without the support of our amazing listeners and of course, our sponsors. Creating sustainable self-care practices involves The realization that slowing down is still moving forward Replacing the habits you remove with something positive and fulfilling Asking for and receiving what you want and need Using natural solutions from plants to support your wellness practices Spending quality time in nature Do you find it hard to carve out time for yourself every single day? Like me, I bet there are days when you feel pulled in a million different directions, tending to everyone's needs but your own. It takes dedication to stick to self-care practices while living a full, and sometimes hectic life. I get how self-care doesn't always go according to plans. That's why I brought on today's guest to share her key wellness practices to embrace despite being overscheduled and busy. About Jovanka Ciares Jovanka Ciares is the author of Reclaiming Wellness and several other titles. A certified wellness expert, integrative herbalist, nutrition educator, and coach, she offers lectures and workshops in Spanish and English. Jovanka studied nutrition with bestselling author T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., at his Center for Nutrition Studies (in partnership with Cornell University) and herbalism/plant medicine with Tieraona Low Dog, MD. A native of Puerto Rico, she lives in Los Angeles. Slowing Down and Getting Support So You Can Do More For Yourself Adapting wellness practices to your life, especially when you're overwhelmed, is no simple task. Yet, as Jovanka explains, transformational habits and rituals can be integrated with ease and grace. This involves realizing that just because you might be slowing down, you are still moving forward. It also involves replacing the habits you remove with something more fulfilling. You'll likely need to ask others to support you with this. Don't be afraid to do so because receiving in itself is an act of generosity as Jovanka explains. FInding Natural Support from Plants and Herbs An essential part of Jovanka's process involves the medicinal nature of plants. Whether you need focus, energy, or relaxation, tapping into the power of plants can go a long way in supporting your wellness practices. Herbs and supplements can restore your endocrine system, support your body, and give your mind what it needs. On this episode of the Get Loved Podcast, Koya talks to Jovanka Ciares about the importance of reconnecting with your ancestors and their ancient wellness practices to reclaim your own wellness. As a trained herbalist and nutrition educator, Jovanka talks about unearthing and using the massive amount of wisdom and traditional wellness techniques that ancient civilizations have passed down to generations, some of which have been forgotten in the present day. There's so much to learn about our own bodies and wellness that is not covered by western medicine, and Jovanka's expertise on the topic will surely help you unlock your hidden potential. Once you learn to love it, it's easier to implement. So I decided to write this book as an homage to my own ancestry, but also to remind people that in your ancestry lineage, chances are you're going to have some of these practices and it's important that we reclaim them in order to reclaim our natural and our rightful state of wellness."15:32 Jovanka: "With the development of social media and the way that we can communicate now and spread the word far and wide, it became very obvious especially at the beginning of the pandemic that I was also not reaching the people that I believed need this information the most. So I created the Reclaiming Wellness initiative, it's an educational initiative that essentially teaches people how to use some of these practices so I do cooking classes, how to use herbal medicine, how to prepare your own medicine at home." 21:41 Jovanka: "Spirituality and religion don't have to be at odds with each other. We could have a religious practice that has its dogmas and follows a particular set of tenets and we can be very spiritual and also take from other religions or other spiritual practices to make our lives better." 29:56 Jovanka: "Every time I get off a phone call with a client and they have clarity about what they're supposed to do, they have hope about the fact that they can heal, it just reminds me that I'm in the right place." We're delving into one of the most controversial nutrition topics in the vegan community: SOY. I interview Dr. Matthew Nagra to interpret the latest research on soy, and ask all the questions you had about this heavily contested food including: Is soy bad for your health? Is soy estrogenic? Will it increase breast tissue in men? Can it have adverse effects on women's hormones? Does soy cause acne? Is soy consumption linked to cancer? Should we be seeking out non GMO soy? How much soy is too much? We also clear the air on other highly controversial foods in the plant-based community including nutritional yeast, vegan protein powder and oil. Dr. Nagra is a Naturopathic Doctor devoted to bringing the most up-to-date evidence-based nutrition information to his patients at his clinic in Vancouver. In 2018 he graduated with his naturopathic medical degree after completing his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology at the University of Victoria. He's certified in plant-based nutrition through Cornell University and has written articles for Dr. T Colin Campbell's Center for Nutrition Studies. He also volunteers for nutritionfacts.org – a science-based public service providing free updates in nutrition research through bite-sized videos. Dr. Nagra is known for his social media platforms, where he often tackles misinformation around diet and nutrition, and deep dives into the latest nutrition studies. Dr. Nagra interprets the latest research studies on diet and nutrition on his Instagram page. Here are his posts on soy, and the references to the studies he talks about in the podcast are included within each caption: Post 1 on soy: https://www.instagram.com/p/B19Tm37hfjZ/?igshid=ivxwmr4w0p2a Post 2 on soy: https://www.instagram.com/p/B2Cf-MBhfUq/?igshid=1pbjffktkczrn&fbclid=IwAR3CWYFObQq5ID4harj82VbKm0pugKjQ2awFClD5dmY8aFm_QPLD-a3fSls Post 3 on soy: https://www.instagram.com/p/B2Hngo0hgI8/?igshid=1xa0zsdu1h6tk&fbclid=IwAR1BoN2mbP8tMqmq5pFRnCOEZSaJ3IHGlEUhzqDmqMavl84HESyK55Y-IpQ If you enjoyed this episode, take a screenshot and share it in your instagram stories tagging me (@plantyou) and Dr. Matthew Nagra (@dr.matthewnagra) with your favorite nugget of wisdom.
