A fourth newly remodeled local Walmart Supercenter will reopen Friday, May 24 in Henrico. The store at 6920 Forest Avenue is the latest in the Richmond region to completely remodeled. It now features improved store layouts, expanded product selections, and technology designed to make shopping easier. The location will host a community celebration and ribbon-cutting event at 10 a.m. Guests will be able to participate in activities that include face-painting provided by The Art Factory and food offerings from the Flavor Chariot food truck. The Walmart Supercenter in Short Pump will celebrate its remodeled look during a community celebration Friday, May 3, at 9 a.m. Upgrades to the store include a new layout, expanded product selections, and technology that allows Walmart associates to better support customers, according to company officials. The store, at 11400 West Broad Street, is one of two locally to undergo renovations as part of Walmart's Signature Experience program, which aims to create better shopping experiences for customers. Flames and lights from first responders' vehicles illuminated the sky north of Floresville the night of Jan. 8-9, as firefighters fought a wind-driven blaze. The fire apparently started that Monday evening on a grassy area behind the Dittmar Lumber Corp.complex in the 1100 block of U.S. 181, not far from the Walmart Supercenter. The first fire alarm sounded Monday night about 8:55 p.m., according to Wilson County Emergency Services District 5 (ESD 5) fire Chief Adam Strzelczyk. The federally-mandated Georgia Advocacy Office will continue hosting resource events throughout Georgia until April, supported by the Administration for Community Living through USAging.   STORY 3: Three Students Overdoses At Berkmar High School Prompt Increased Drug Prevention Efforts in Gwinnett Schools Gwinnett County Public Schools is grappling with students experiencing fentanyl-related overdoses at Berkmar High School, with three incidents reported this semester. None resulted in fatalities as Narcan was administered in each case. This issue is a manifestation of the nationwide opioid crisis, with teens unknowingly consuming substances containing fentanyl. The district is working with health professionals, community partners, and the criminal justice system to address the problem. Efforts include Narcan training for staff, substance abuse awareness presentations, and community engagement to raise awareness and prevent drug-related issues in schools. The company has submitted a commercial rezoning application for a 5,400-square-foot restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, a two-lane drive-thru, and 71 parking spaces. The proposed location is adjacent to Redeemer Church, and if approved, the church plans to subdivide its property. The Chick-fil-A will be positioned near existing establishments, including Wendy's, Waffle House, Aldi, Walmart Supercenter, and more. The rezoning requires approval from Gwinnett County's Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners.   STORY 5: New Year's resolutions? Most Americans believe that concept is outdated A survey of 2,000 Americans revealed that 55% believe the concept of New Year's resolutions is outdated. Millennials are the most disillusioned, with 66% expressing disinterest. Over half of respondents give up on resolutions by March, and only 5% stick to them for a full year. Reasons for abandonment include feeling too pressured (40%), perceiving no lasting change (34%), and viewing resolutions as a chore (34%). Despite finding resolutions unrealistic, 52% of respondents are interested in setting goals for 2024, with Gen Z (67%) and millennials (71%) showing the most interest. The National Park Service recently sent a study to Congress supporting the protection of the Muscogee Creek Nation's historic homeland in Middle Georgia. Floresville police are seeking help from the public in identifying a female suspect in a June 24 theft from the Walmart Supercenter at 305 10th St. (U.S. 181). According to Floresville police Detective Raul Guerrero, a Hispanic woman wearing a purple shirt and blue jeans was seen loading a shopping cart with merchandise valued at almost 0. Here Are the Show Highlights: Max spoke with broker Paul Schaaf about his primary challenge and ultimate victory in selling this Texas mobile home park. (Max, 0:58) The park owners were, themselves, licensed real estate agents who nonetheless approached Paul about selling their park. (Paul, 1:21) They could have sold their property on their own, but they recognized that Paul and The MHP Broker had more specialized knowledge and experience in this niche of the industry and could get the job done quicker and easier and at a better financial return. They were right. After multiple offers, Paul found a prospective buyer after having the park on the market for just a week or so. From there, they closed in around 45 days, with a buyer who had financing. (Paul, 1:43) Paul credited having a great buyer who knew the industry and was highly motivated to get the job done. But even at that, there was one potentially high-risk hitch during due diligence. (Paul, 2:29) There was a phase one environmental discovery that the property had long ago been used as a service station or tire shop and that at that time it had held a long-gone gas tank. The prospective buyer wanted assurance that there would be no costly need for soil remediation once they became the owner, (Paul, 2:57) It cost a little money upfront, but the soil was tested and quickly found to be clean and problem-free. (Paul, 3:28) The buyer obviously felt it was worth proceeding with the transaction. The park's in a prime location, adjacent to a Walmart Supercenter and a hotel, and with good road frontage in a growing area. The park was becoming hybrid, with some RVs moving into unoccupied lots. The occupancy was just around 75 percent, giving the buyer plenty of opportunity to increase revenue by infilling. The utilities were provided by the city, with direct billing to residents--making this part of ownership turnkey. The park also had an onsite manager who was willing to stay on. And the seller was motivated to close and to move on with other investments that interested them more. So everyone was happy and highly motivated to close. (Paul, 4:28) As far as the financing went, the buyer brought significant cash and they were able to get approval in a week or so from a lender they'd worked with on previous commercial deals. The only thing that slowed the sale at all was that phase one discovery, which proved to be just a minor hitch. (Paul, 5:37) The lesson, from Paul's perspective, is that sellers must be as organized as possible, and then find well-qualified and motivated buyers. That involves having a broker who knows the business and can help get them over whatever unexpected “speed bumps” might be found along the way.  At least one person was shot outside of a Walmart in the Town Center area Wednesday, police officials said. A person who was shot was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, police said, and multiple people were detained. According to Cobb County Police Department Deputy Chief Ben Cohen, officers responded Wednesday afternoon to reports of an active shooter at the Walmart in Town Center Market at 2795 Chastain Meadows Parkway. The shooting stemmed from a conflict between two separate groups of people, Cohen said, and occurred outside the Walmart's automotive center. The store was subsequently evacuated. Police were still actively investigating the incident. Further details were not available by press time. The shopping center, anchored by the Walmart, is north of Barrett Parkway and east of Interstate 575.   Christopher Patrick Golden pleaded guilty Thursday morning to the murder of two Cobb County Sheriff's Deputies who were killed at a west Cobb subdivision in September. The negotiated plea agreement includes charges of aggravated assault and murder in the slaying of deputies Jonathan Koleski, 42, and Marshall Ervin Jr., 38. Under the terms of the agreement, Golden, 30, will receive two life sentences, plus an additional 55 years, without the possibility of parole. That would represent the maximum sentence short of the death penalty, according to the Cobb District Attorney's Office.  Koleski and Ervin were killed September 8 while attempting to serve a warrant at a home in the Hampton Glen subdivision for Christopher Cook, 32. Cook was wanted for failure to appear related to a theft by deception case. While the deputies were attempting to arrest Cook in the driveway of the home, they were confronted by Golden, who was inside the home with a weapon, investigators said at the time. There followed an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the deputies, and both deputies were killed. Police said at the time that Golden was apprehended after a brief standoff at the home. The killing of Koleski and Ervin prompted an outpouring of support from across Georgia, with thousands attending memorial services in the week after their deaths.   Marietta City Schools Superintendent Grant Rivera told Cobb lawmakers Wednesday the state is facing a crossroads in how it responds to pandemic learning losses. Flush with federal cash, Rivera added, school districts are uniquely positioned to address those losses if they spend their money wisely. And for him, that starts with addressing literacy. Rivera emphasized on the importance of students reading on grade level, particularly by 3rd grade. Statistics show students that are not reading on or above grade level by third grade will typically face challenges throughout their academic career. The ripple effects of the pandemic have been evident in Marietta and its counterparts statewide. In state metrics released last month, both Cobb and Marietta schools declined in every category since 2019 except graduation rates, with some of the largest losses in “readiness,” which includes literacy as a factor. Rivera told the MDJ after the meeting — an annual summit between state legislators and Cobb's largest employers and stakeholders — literacy has to remain the focus. Rivera cited as another example ensuring students in after-school programs have remedial reading instruction when needed. One such program the district's employed is Fast Start Academy, a summer literacy program for rising second- and third-graders. Belinda Walters-Brazile, the district's deputy superintendent, said in October students who attended the four-week course saw an average increase from 65% to 79% in their reading scores. On December 3, Smyrna-based Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta and the Hughey family dedicated the final home of the year to Kuyshondra, a single mother of three who serves the community as a Cobb County school bus driver. Cobb County resident Jim Hughey conceived the idea to build a Habitat for Humanity home in memory of his parents, Bob and Jane Hughey in late 2021 after volunteering at a Habitat build in Veterans Place in Douglasville. It is one of only three Habitat developments in the U.S. built exclusively for veterans. Hughey was incredibly inspired by the camaraderie amongst the Habitat families and their appreciation of their homes. He shared the idea with his wife, Jackie and extended family, all whom eagerly agreed to work together to raise the funds. Bob Hughey served in the U.S. Marines and after college became a carpenter, then a high school industrial arts teacher and later, a school administrator in Ohio. Jane was a nurse and specialized in women's health when she returned to the workforce later in life. They raised five children in a small home to which Bob was able to add modest additions as the family grew. After retiring to Lake Keowee in Seneca, South Carolina, Bob became a passionate volunteer for the Seneca Habitat affiliate. Jane volunteered at a women's clinic and went on international medical mission trips. In 2012 when Parkinson's Disease took its toll on Bob, they moved to Presbyterian Village in Austell to be near Jim. Bob passed in 2015 and Jane in 2020. Jim says it is appropriate that the Habitat home being built in their memory is in Austell where their final years were spent. Kuyshondra is a single mother of three children: Markeyla, 16; D'Anthony, 13; and Richard, 11. One of her children deals with a learning disability that requires a lot of help from Kuyshondra. In seeking to have a job that allowed her to be in multiple places throughout the day or week she first worked in the cafeteria at a Cobb County school and a second job at Kroger in the deli department. To increase her income, she began driving for Uber, Lyft, doing deliveries with Instacart and earned her CDL license and became a bus driver. She has worked very hard at multiple jobs while balancing being an attentive mother, provider and working to become a Habitat homeowner. Kuyshondra gives God all the glory and praise for her home. The Marietta Planning Commission split 3-3 over Beazer Homes' application to annex nearly 170 acres of land in unincorporated Cobb County into the city, though the request will still go before the Marietta City Council next week. The board heard Beazer's request for rezoning and annexation into the city at its Tuesday night meeting. Commissioners Tee Anderson, Boozer McClure and Frasure Hunter voted to advance the proposal, while commissioners Brenda McCrae, Craig Smith and Stephen Diffley voted to deny it. Commission Chair Bob Kinney was absent from the meeting, and Diffley served as chair in his place. The Planning Commission is an advisory board appointed by the City Council which issues recommendations on zoning matters. Beazer is looking to build a 600-home development on 175 acres between Bells Ferry Road and Interstate 575, along Laura Lake Road. Last month, the Cobb Board of Commissioners objected to the annexation on the grounds that the proposed rezoning for a mix of single-family detached homes and townhomes, slated at 3.4 units per acre, exceeds the county's acceptable threshold of 3 units per acre. Since the proposal was not voted down, it advances to the Marietta City Council, which meets next on Wednesday, December 14 at 205 Lawrence St. After a short chase on Tuesday, Marietta police delivered Barbie, among other toys and goods, into the custody of Marietta school kids.  Local elementary school students and officers of the Marietta Police Department shared a holiday shopping trip at the Walmart Supercenter off Cobb Parkway by the Big Chicken.  Marietta City Schools selected 60 students based on need to receive $250 to spend on gifts and necessities while chaperoned by a police officer, a public safety official, or a volunteer. After buying the presents, students could have them gift-wrapped by volunteers while they visited with Santa. Lieutenant Gretchen Ingram, who leads the police department's community outreach unit, organized the event, which she said is meant to spread Christmas cheer and promote positive relationships between officers and local kids. The event is funded entirely by donations, Ingram said. Parents also provided their children and the officers with a list. "Shop with a Cop," as it's known, has become an annual tradition for MPD and the school system. Marietta Police Chief Marty Ferrell said the event has been running for at least 10 years. A disgruntled Walmart employee walked into the break room at a Virginia store and opened fire, killing six co-workers and injuring others before turning the gun on himself, according to police. The shooting happened Tuesday night at the Walmart Supercenter in Chesapeake, about an hour before the store was set to close. On Wednesday morning, City Manager Chris Price and Chesapeake Chief of Police Mark Solesky addressed the media about the shooting.

Firefighters from Wilson County Emergency Services District 5 deploy foam the evening of July 14 to suppress flames engulfing a vehicle at the Walmart Supercenter parking lot in Floresville. A Jackson man appeared to be have been making good hauls of shoplifted goods from the Walmart Supercenter in Jackson but he was caught up with and apprehended. Clarke County Sheriff De- Wayne Smith contacted the Jackson Police Department Dec. 3 with information he had received. With a combined effort between Smith and Investigator Ron Baggette, a photograph of a masked subject shoplifting from Walmart, was identified as Cody Rynders, from Jackson. Fuel nozzles at Floresville's H-E-B store and Murphy USA at the Walmart Supercenter were covered Wednesday afternoon, signaling they were out of fuel. Both outlets' spokesmen said they aren't sure when they will be getting more in. A mom and her son are accused of biting and punching police officers who were breaking up a fight Saturday afternoon at the southwest side Walmart Supercenter. According to a police account and criminal complaints, Timothy Dwayne Christmas, who turned 18 last week, and his mother, Kevett'a McPhan, 37, were both arrested. The incident began at 3:11 p.m. Saturday when a Cedar Rapids officer there was alerted about two people arguing and chasing each other in the store. The officer was talking with one of those involved in the parking lot outside when the other — identified as Christmas — approached and tried to start a fight there, authorities said. The officer kept the two separated and called for backup. Christmas went back in the Walmart, where responding officers followed moments later. A Walmart employee told police that Christmas punched him in the face when he had asked the teen to leave the store, police said. Officers found Christmas and were arresting him when authorities said he assaulted several of them. According to a criminal complaint, he shoved one, tried to head-butt another and bit the left thumb of another, causing it to bleed. McPhan — his mother — also became involved, punching another officer in the chest. Christmas faces charges of assault on a police officer causing injury, two counts of assault on a police officer, assault and interference with official acts. McPhan faces charges of assault on a police officer and interference with official acts. Continuing a downward trajectory from a pre-Thanksgiving spike, COVID-19 hospitalizations in Iowa reached a low Sunday not seen in about four months and finally dipping below last summer's worst surge. The number of people being treated for the respiratory illness in Iowa hospitals declined from 419 to 382 in the 24-hour period ending at 11 a.m. Sunday. Those in intensive care inched up from 76 to 79, while those placed on ventilators dropped from 38 to 36. The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state has been ticking down since an alarming spike of 1,527 patients reported Nov. 18. The 382 patients reported Sunday morning is the lowest level since 376 on Sept 29. The decline from the spike now puts the number of COVID-19 patients below the worst of last summer, when hospitalizations in Iowa reached 417 on May 7.

Did you know that the Walmart Supercenter at Crossgate Commons in Albany, NY was the biggest Supercenter in the world when it opened in May 2008? This Walmart location was also the first two-story Supercenter to open in the United States. Building the first two-story Supercenter wasn’t an easy process as planning and construction needed to consider all things new such as installing a special escalator for shopping carts. As most of you know, on the morning of Saturday August 3rd, 2019, a senseless, unspeakable act of violence and Hispanophobia was committed at a Walmart Supercenter here in my hometown of El Paso, TX. Most of you watched the news and saw the horrible tragedy unfurl and become untangled before our eyes. I'm doing a two part episode about the events, not to delve into the shooter or his motives, or to go in depth about the politics or agendas that this brings up. My interest is in telling my personal account of the day as it unfolded, and also to pay respect to all the people who's lives were taken from them that day. This is away to honor them, and their families, even if didn't know any of the victims on a personal level. I am dedicating two episodes to this incident, not out of sensationalism, but because I love my home town. I love EL PASO, in my own unique way. I grew up here, I live here, and I have experienced a lot (even outside of El Paso) but I consider this home. Thank you to everyone that donated time, money, blood, sweat, tears, anything in the wake of this horrible tragedy. I'm just one guy, living in this city, somewhat distanced from the tragedy but it affected me just the same. I want to delve into that, and I want to share thoughts, not agendas or political views or that bs about this tragedy. I want to talk about people, and my family, and what it was like to experience one of the saddest/darkest days this city has ever known. There's no music in this one. it just opens cold. The Present Future is broken down into six “New Realities” that all reiterate the fact that “the present makes clearest sense in light of the future.” [5] The past 500 years have predominantly perpetuated the idea that we are headed toward the future when the reality is the future is headed toward us (the Church). On repeat, the book alludes to the fact that the Church is primarily a means to an end; that is a kingdom end. In Genesis, there was no Church and when the New Heaven and New Earth are ushered in, the Church does not exist. McNeal appropriately concludes that it must be a means to a kingdom-end. Thus, the kingdom culture is preeminent to the Church. The books strategic objective serves as a “polemical volume,” which galvanizes church leaders “to action before it’s too late.”[6] McNeal is clear in stating a tactical objective as well: “My goal is to provoke and to frame conversations that lead to action, to risk, to rediscovery of mission.”[7] “Provoke” and “galvanize” are great descriptions of what McNeal does. He gives his readers an “out” at the outset of the book: “me do not read this book if you are looking to bolster your opinion that the way to the future is charted through the past… if you fit any (or all) of these categories, take my advice and don't read this book. It will just agitate you.”[8] The major themes throughout this book are the overemphasis of Church culture and the comeback of kingdom focus. The first Reformation focused on setting the Church free from (corrupt) people whereas this New Reformation is focused on setting the people free from (what has become) the Church/institution. Basically, out with the old and in with the new. We’ve been building up the Church for 500 years now let’s get with Jesus plan of preaching the good news of the Kingdom! The gospel of the kingdom is about proclaiming the prison doors have been unlocked. A kingdom culture prevents the church from being competitors with one another.
