Send us a textWith one of the most iconic lineups in its storied history, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band continues to shine as one of the most accomplished groups in American roots music. Featuring founding members Jeff Hanna (lead vocals, guitar) and Jimmie Fadden (drums, harmonica, vocals), along with longtime bandmate Bob Carpenter (keys, vocals), who has been with the band since 1980, and rounded out by Jim Photoglo (bass, vocals), Jaime Hanna (guitar, vocals), and Ross Holmes (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), the Dirt Band has captivated audiences for nearly six decades.Their career began in 1966 as a jug band in Southern California, quickly rising to prominence by 1970 with their breakthrough album Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy, featuring the hit single "Mr. Bojangles." Over the years, they've made an indelible mark on American music with hits like “Fishin' In The Dark,” “Modern Day Romance,” and “Long Hard Road.” The band is also celebrated for their three Will The Circle Be Unbroken records, which featured collaborations with bluegrass, country, and folk legends such as Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson. These efforts earned the Dirt Band GRAMMY, CMA, and IBMA Awards, while their PBS special Circlin' Back! won an Emmy.In 2022, the band released Dirt Does Dylan to widespread critical acclaim, continuing their legacy of musical excellence. Bob Carpenter, a recent guest on Midwest Mixtape Podcast, discussed the band's journey and the exciting next chapter—ALL THE GOOD TIMES: The Farewell Tour. Launching in 2024, this tour will celebrate the nearly 60 years of music that the Dirt Band has shared with the world, offering fans a final chance to experience the band's legendary live performances.http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Send us a Text Message. From an early age, Harry Tuft was involved in piano and clarinet lessons. Through a summer camp counselor, he learned about the ukulele and became interested in playing that instrument. From there, he moved to a baritone ukulele, and then a six-string guitar. His father loved classical music and opera and would often play traditional classical during dinner. After dinner, Tuft would listen to the pop and R&B stations of the day and sing along with the likes of Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford, and Perry Como. From John McEuen: "With the airing of Ken Burns Country Music, [John] McEuen has brought acoustic music to many new fans, taking part in 4 episodes of the series. Episode 6 is called Will The Circle Be Unbroken and John closes that one. A co-founding member of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (1966, with a dream ‘to be on the radio').  October 2017, after [the] 50th anniversary tour, John left the band to pursue his own tour dates and projects, and stepped off the bus." From a very young age, inspired by a piano inherited from his grandparents, Howard Dlugasch took piano lessons of his own volition. By his early teens, he started playing a multitude of instruments, such as guitar, drums, bass, and vocals. He jokes that he is mediocre at all of them, but only because he is a musician who wants to focus on a multitude of instruments at once rather than completely on one specific instrument.  Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear podcast featuring the news and culture from peak to peak. Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There's a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky Es gibt auch hier schon ein besseres Leben, der Himmel kann noch warten und mit dieser Hoffnung können wir uns gegenseitig unterstützen unser Leben nicht nur auszuhalten, sondern zu leben. Es geht in dem Podcast aber nicht nur um das Vorwort und die Danksagungen des Buchs, sondern auch um das ganze Buch, hierzu hören wir Gedanken von Sara Burghoff, die dazu auch schon im NDR unter „Gesegneter Abend“ zu hören waren. Außerdem gibt es noch einige Gedanken zu Loretta Lynn, die im Oktober diesen Jahres gestorben ist. The image of bluegrass is mountain music played and heard at high altitudes and towns like Deep Gap and remote mountain hollers across the Appalachians. But the earliest form of the music originated at lower elevations, in textile towns across the North Carolina Piedmont. As far back as the 1920s, old-time string bands like Charlie Poole's North Carolina Ramblers were playing an early form of the music in textile towns, like Gastonia, Spray, and Shelby - in Cleveland County west of Charlotte. In this second episode of Carolina Calling, we visit the small town of Shelby: a seemingly quiet place, like most small Southern towns one might pass by in their travels. Until you see the signs for the likes of the Don Gibson Theatre and the Earl Scruggs Center, you wouldn't guess that it was the town that raised two of the most influential musicians and songwriters in bluegrass and country music: Earl Scruggs, one of the most important musicians in the birth of bluegrass, whose banjo playing was so innovative that it still bears his name, “Scruggs style,” and Don Gibson, one of the greatest songwriters in the pop & country pantheon, who wrote “I Can't Stop Loving You,” “Sweet Dreams,” and other songs you know by heart. For both Don Gibson and Earl Scruggs, Shelby is where it all began.Subscribe to Carolina Calling to follow along as we journey across the Old North State, visiting towns like Greensboro, Durham, Wilmington, Asheville, and more.Brought to you by The Bluegrass Situation and Come Hear NCMusic featured in this episode:Charlie Poole & The North Carolina Ramblers - "Take a Drink On Me"Flatt & Scruggs - "Ground Speed"Don Gibson - "I Can't Stop Loving You"Andrew Marlin - "Erie Fiddler" (Carolina Calling Theme)Hedy West - "Cotton Mill Girl"Blind Boy Fuller - "Rag Mama, Rag"Don Gibson - "Sea Of Heartbreak"Patsy Cline - "Sweet Dreams "Ray Charles - "I Can't Stop Loving You"Ronnie Milsap - "(I'd Be) A Legend In My Time"Elvis Presley - "Crying In The Chapel"Hank Snow - "Oh Lonesome Me"Don Gibson - "Sweet Dreams"Don Gibson - "Oh Lonesome Me"Chet Atkins - "Oh Lonesome Me"Johnny Cash - "Oh, Lonesome Me"The Everly Brothers - "Oh Lonesome Me"Neil Young - "Oh Lonesome Me"Flatt & Scruggs - "Foggy Mountain Breakdown"Bill Preston - "Holy, Holy, Holy"Flat & Scruggs - "We'll Meet Again Sweetheart"Snuffy Jenkins - "Careless Love"Bill Monroe - "Uncle Pen"Bill Monroe - "It's Mighty Dark to Travel"The Earl Scruggs Revue - "I Shall Be Released"The Band - "I Shall Be Released"Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Will The Circle Be Unbroken"The Country Gentlemen - "Fox on the Run"Sonny Terry - "Whoopin' The Blues"Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee - "Born With The Blues (Live)"Nina Simone - "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free"Cover image courtesy of the Don Gibson TheatreAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
