Rock Around the Clock • Bill Haley & His Comets 2. Johnny B. Goode • Chuck Berry 3. Smoke gets in your eyes •The Platters En el proper podcast podreu gaudir de la 2ª part on abordarem els aspectes més tècnics de la pel·lícula. Jay opens things with a crazy Rolling Stone article about the demise of the 90's alt rock band Live. The band's 1995 performance on MTV's Unplugged sparked Jay & Nick's lifelong friendship. They remained a strong band through the 90's, but it all went to hell after that…Song: Live - “Stage”Nick has some rare follow-up to a topic back in episode #135, when he discussed Epic's acquisition of Bandcamp. So, what's happened since then? Has minority stakeholder Tencent used it to spy on independent artists as it simultaneously transformed Epic Games' image into the rogue indie studio that it yearned to be (Pitchfork's prediction)?Song: Phillip Selway - “What Keeps You Awake At Night?”Finally, Greg takes on a tour of the year 1955. We begin with Gould's first Goldberg Variations, recorded in June. “Rock Around the Clock” by His Comets and “Ain't That Ashame” by Fats Domino were both hits, Bebop is fading as the Birth of Cool begins. The first Guiness Book of World Records was released and the year ended with the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusing to give up her seat on the bus. It's also the last time Newcastle won a cup…Song: Glenn Gould - “Goldberg Variations, BWV 988: Variation 5 a 1 ovvero 2 Clav.”

Rock and roll has been described as a merger of country music and rhythm and blues, but, if it were that simple, it would have existed long before it burst into the national consciousness. The seeds of the music had been in place for decades, but they flowered in the mid-1950s when nourished by a volatile mix of Black culture and white spending power. Black vocal groups such as the Dominoes and the Spaniels began combining gospel-style harmonies and call-and-response singing with earthy subject matter and more aggressive rhythm-and-blues rhythms. Heralding this new sound were disc jockeys such as Alan Freed of Cleveland, Ohio, Dewey Phillips of Memphis, Tennessee, and William (“Hoss”) Allen of WLAC in Nashville, Tennessee—who created rock-and-roll radio by playing hard-driving rhythm-and-blues and raunchy blues records that introduced white suburban teenagers to a culture that sounded more exotic, thrilling, and illicit than anything they had ever known. In 1954 that sound coalesced around an image: that of a handsome white singer, Elvis Presley, who sounded like a Black man. With what record label are the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, and the Temptations associated? Turn the volume up in this study of famous musicians. Presley's nondenominational taste in music incorporated everything from hillbilly rave-ups and blues wails to pop-crooner ballads. Yet his early recordings with producer Sam Phillips, guitarist Scotty Moore, and bassist Bill Black for in Memphis were less about any one style than about a feeling. For decades African Americans had used the term rock and roll as a euphemism for sex, and Presley's music oozed sexuality. Presley was hardly the only artist who embodied this attitude, but he was clearly a catalyst in the merger of Black and white culture into something far bigger and more complex than both. In Presley's wake, the music of Black singers such as Fats Domino, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley, who might have been considered rhythm-and-blues artists only years before, fit alongside the rockabilly-flavoured tunes of white performers such as Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, and Jerry Lee Lewis, in part because they were all now addressing the same audience: teenagers. For young white America, this new music was a soundtrack for rebellion, however mild. When Bill Haley and His Comets kicked off the 1955 motion picture Blackboard Jungle with “Rock Around the Clock,” teens in movie houses throughout the United States stomped on the

Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American musician, singer, composer, songwriter and bandleader. His work is characterized by nonconformity, free-form improvisation, sound experiments, musical virtuosity and satire of American culture. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa composed rock, pop, jazz, jazz fusion, orchestral and musique concrète works, and produced almost all of the 60-plus albums that he released with his band the Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist. Zappa also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. He is considered one of the most innovative and stylistically diverse musicians of his generation. On a number of occasions Zappa appeared in radio show slots, airing and generally discussing his favored music, or occasionally guesting on a 'club turntable', describing himself as a 'Fraudulent DJ'. In this episode, part one of a series of two, all the tracks in chronological order as selected by Zappa (with exception of most of his own tracks) for all his DJ appearances that have been documented, and that took place between 1968 and 1984.

VE 131 Prehistoric Rock Today on the VE---rock, before it rolled. A rumage through the pre-historic rock vaults for songs that foreshadowed rock and roll, compiled by guest programmer Dan Miele. These are vintage recordings but their vitality will surprise you. I'm PC and this is the VE Roll 'Em Pete Big Joe Turner 1938 Prehistoric rock on the VE. From the year 1938 AD that's the blues shouting daddy of em all, Big Joe Turner with "Roll Em Pete." One of the first R&B recordings to make use of what was to become the rock and roll back beat - as opposed to the more common shuffle rhythm. This song was later recorded by Count Basie, and Joe recorded with the Basie band in later years. Joe Turner was the frist to record Shake, Rattle and Roll, which later became a hit for Bill Haley and His Comets. Things are really rockin at the House Of Blue Lights....Freddie Slack and Ella May Morse... House of Blue Lights Freddie Slack (co-writer with Don Ray) and Ella Mae Morse 1946 Down the Road Apiece: Will Bradley Trio 1940 Dinosaurs roam the earth again--it's prehistoric rock on the VE. A couple there that were echoed in 60s rock. Mitch Ryder refefrenced "house Of Blue Lights" by Freddie Slack and Ella Mae Morse, and The Rolling Stones covered Will Bradley's "Down The Road Apiece." Robert Plant recorded this one by Wynonie Mr Blues Harris with his group The Honeydrippers...and I'll follow it up with the song that gave th eband their name......... Good Rockin' Tonight: Wynonie Harris: 1948 Joe Liggins: The Honeydripper The Honeydripper was Joe Liggins, who along with Wynonie Harris, was an inspiration to Robert Plant. It's prehistoric rock on the VE. Here are a couple you'll know from their rock covers by Aerosmith and George Thorogood.... Bull Moose Jackson: Big Ten Inch ***pull from YOutube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJpO4ObZSdg Amos Milburn: One Bourbon, One Scotch One Beer *** pull from youtubehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TqglR7YG1Y The VE with prehistoric rock from Amos Milburn and Bull Moose Jackson...with the original versions of songs you know well from seventies rock. Here's someon ewho held the title "queen of rock and roll" when the competition iin thie category was pretty slim....but Sister Rosetta Tharpe had it all goin gon...gospel chops and sex appeal.... Sister Rosetta Tharpe: Rock Daniel 1941 The Fat Man: Fats Domino: The VE with PreHistoric Rock....but it begins inprope with thhe fat man, Antione Domino, from 1950....the tune is a variation on the traditional New Orleans tune Junker's Blues, which also provided the melody for Lloyd Price's Lawdy Miss Clawdy. Now, the guy known as the King of the Jukebox. Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five tore it up with hilarious story-songs. His guitarist Carl Hogan guitar has been cited by Chuck Berry as one of his main influences Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 : Ain't That Just Like a Woman 1946 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEqiWTb-UWA Julia Lee and her Boyfriends Gotta Gimme Whatcha Got 1946http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Pq98BQ7E7Bk The VE with Prehistoric rock.. THAT girfriend could sing! Julia Lee And Her Boyfriends..who just happened to be two legendary names of jazz-- Benny Carter and Red Norvo. No small wonder that she commanded such prime session men--Julia sang and played piano in her brother George Lee's band, which for a time also included Charlie Parker. So where did 'rock" really begin? 1947--Wild Bill Moore We're Gonna Rock Wild Bill Moore 1947 Rock the Joint: Jimmy Preston 1949 The VE with Prehistoric Rock, and the name itself, attributed to Clevland DJ Alan Freed, was taken from tenor sax man Will Bill Moore's "We're Gonna Rock" which showed up on his Moondog Show radio programs...also Jimmy Preston and Rock The Joint. Let's rock out today's VE with one more that George Thorogood latched on to, by a legend of country music who died before rock was born... Move It On Over Hank Williams 1947 Jack Guthrie: Oakie Boogie The Year was 1947. And like the legendary flying saucer that crash landed in Roswell, New Mexico, the alien music life form of rock and roll was taking shape with some help from country cousin Hank Williams, and right there Jack Guthrie and the western swing jam "Oakie Boogie, which Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock owes a debt to. Jack was the cousin of the seminal American music figure who would have been 100 years old this week. Woody introduced one element of what would become rock that we haven't touched on yet...the political and intellectual...soomething that was rare in popular music of his day...but as a folk singer, Woody could speak his mind, and he makes an obvious political statement in this song from 1940: Woody Guthrie: Jesus Christ Robert Wilkins; That's No Way To Get Along Pre Historic Rock on The VE....Woody Guthrie, Jesus Christ, and Revered Robert Wilkins, "That's No Way To Get Along..." rock rooted in bible stories....and that last one brings us to the half century mark this week of the British rock band that brought all the early influences together in an entirely new, original sound. Rolling Stones: Not Fade Away 50 years ago, the Rolling Stones played their first gig at The Marquee Club in London. This week, they posed outside thevenue and strongly hinted at a fiftieth anniversary tour. Not Fade Away. 20 years ago, let alone 50, who would have thought that would be The Rolling Stones legacy. To top off this VE exploration of Prehistoric rock, here is an evocative and epic song by another great interperter of the rock roots. From his 1990 album "Enlightenment," Van Morrsion sings of "The Days Before Rock And Roll, " and how those distant radio signals in the deepest night brought a brilliant new light into his young world. Van Morrison : In The Days Before Rock And Roll. And that's the VE. A true mystic poet, Van Morrsion always finds a way to say it for all of us. Gil Sandler's Baltimore Stories

In the 1950s Baltimore’s downtown movies were suffering—so many of its patrons had moved to the suburbs. Among the movie theaters abandoned in the exodus was Keith’s, at Lexington and Liberty Streets...The management of Keith’s was at long last faced with a decision—try to keep the movie theater open by bringing in sure-fire live attractions, or close the place. It decided to do the former and so brought in super-rock star Bill Haley and His Comets. In a quirky Baltimore twist, Bill Haley, whom Keith management brought in to keep the place open, was the one who closed it down. This is the story of how.

This week on the Winter of Wayback we're visiting 1954, which happens to be the year in which John Updike published his first story, "Friends from Philadelphia," in the New Yorker. He wrote the story just after graduating college and giving himself five years to "make it" as a writer. He really hit the ground running!  We also celebrate the "official" (depending on who you ask) birth of rock and roll, with Bill Haley and His Comets releasing "Rock Around the Clock." Though the song was originally a B-side (to a song called "Thirteen Women," about a man stranded with a bunch of women after an H-Bomb attack). And it wasn't until the next year that "Rock Around the Clock" became a #1 hit, after being featured in the movie Blackboard Jungle. Also this week: Davy Crockett and coonskin caps; Wildwood, NJ's claim to musical fame; and much, much more!

How Did Jazz Get to Carnegie Hall? Practice

On this date in 1938, Benny Goodman and his band played the first jazz concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. Here are some things you may not have known about the concert, the landmark recording of it and Carnegie Hall in general. Until 1938, Carnegie Hall had been been a venue exclusively for classical music. It opened in 1891, built by Andrew Carnegie, who pronounced his name slightly different from the common name of the hall. It was built as the venue for the Oratorio Society of New York and the New York Symphony. Its original name, which remains above the marquee was simply “Music Hall.” After two years, the directors of the hall persuaded Carnegie to allow the theater to be renamed “Carnegie Hall.” The New York Symphony eventually merged with the Philharmonic Society of New York to form the New York Philharmonic.  Benny Goodman was a clarinetist whose band was one of the first well-known racially integrated bands.  The idea of playing at the Carnegie Hall started as a publicity stunt by Goodman’s publicist. Goodman seized on the idea and canceled several already-set concerts to work toward the landmark performance. The concert was sold out weeks in advance with a top price of $2.75, which is equivalent to about $50 today. The concert began with three contemporary songs, followed by a chronological history of jazz.  The show featured performances by Goodman’s big band, his trio, his quartet and guests including Count Basie and Duke Ellington. The highlight of the night was probably Goodman’s signature tune “Sing, Sing, Sing,” which featured solos by Goodman, along  with Babe Russin on tenor sax, Harry James on trumpet, Gene Krupa on drums and an unexpected piano solo by Jess Stacy. Stacy, who usually played rhythm on the song, said he was unprepared for the solo, but what he ended up playing has been hailed as a masterpiece linking jazz and classical music, which was quite appropriate for the venue. Stacy was glad he didn’t have warning of his solo. He said he would have gotten nervous and screwed it up. The concert was recorded for personal use, and the original masters gathered dust until 1950, when Goodman brought them to Columbia Records. The resulting album, “The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert” was the first double album and has never been out of print since its release. It’s one of the best selling jazz albums of all time. Carnegie Hall had its first rock and roll show in 1955, when Bill Haley and His Comets played a benefit show. In 1964, The Beatles played two shows on their first tour of the United States. The New York Philharmonic moved to the new Lincoln Center in 1962. Carnegie Hall was saved from the wrecking ball in 1960 when the City of New York purchased it. Our question: In which country was Andrew Carnegie born? Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States.  It’s unofficially Elementary School Teacher Day, National Fig Newton Day, and National Day of Service. It’s the birthday of singer and actress Ethel Merman who was born in 1908; zoologist Dian Fossey, who was born in 1932; and playwright, songwriter and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is 37. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1977, the top song in the U.S. was “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder. The No. 1 movie was “The Enforcer,” while the novel “Trinity” by Leon Uris topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.  Weekly question: What is the name of the current venue of the New York Philharmonic? Submit your answer at triviapeople.com/test and we’ll add the name of the person with the first correct answer to our winner’s wall … at triviapeople.com. We'll have the correct answer on Friday’s episode.   Links Follow us on Twitter, Facebook or our website.
