Melissa Lopez is the James Beard semifinalist chef behind Barra Santos, one of the buzziest restaurants in recent memory to grace Los Angeles. Barra Santos is a tiny, sardine-tin of a restaurant in Cypress Park serving up thoughtful, super high-quality Portuguese fare. But as small as the restaurant's footprint is, the noise it's made since opening has been nothing short of deafening. After visiting the restaurant myself, I knew I wanted to get to know the mastermind behind the operation, and Chef Melissa did not disappoint. Would I go so far as to say we've got one of the country's brightest rising stars on our hands? Yes, yes, I would. But listen to the interview and visit Barra Santos to make up your own mind on the matter. But first, a nasally rendition of a couple of things that caught my eye this week. There's a Jenn Harris piece on how the tariffs are endangering the diversity that makes LA's food scene one of the best in the country, a Substack newsletter (Khushbu Shah's Tap Is Fine) on whether or not we should view influencers as experts, and an exciting new survey (from Emily Wilson at The Angel) on what Angelenos want from restaurants that I highly encourage you to take. After a dark start to the New Year, a little light at the end of the tunnel this week as 18 Los Angeles chefs, bars and restaurants were named James Beard semifinalists. With Angelenos earning spots in the categories of Outstanding Chef, Outstanding Restaurant and Best Chef: California, Father Sal is with us today for one of our trademark, frankly psychotic dissections of what it all means. We attempt to answer questions like, is this a downward or upward trending year for LA? What are Angelenos' chances of turning their semifinalist nods into actual victories? Which restaurants most surprised us by earning a spot, and which snubs left us scratching our head? We also discuss a great article by the LA Times' Jenn Harris on LA chefs' wishlist for 2025, and after the break we're joined by friends of the pod Luke Reyes and Reilly Cox for Part 3 of our Opening Cafe Esca series. As a reminder, this is our series in which we're accompanying Luke and Reilly in their journey to open up an ambitious new coastal Italian restaurant in the Arts District this Spring. In this conversation, Luke and Reilly talk to us about bringing their ambitious design concept to life. Feat. discussion of restaurants and chefs including Etra, Amiga Amore, Heritage BBQ, Evil Cooks, Barra Santos, Camelia, Baroo, Kato, Holbox, Gilberto Cetina, Chuy Cervantes, Damian, Bridgetown Roti, Poncho's Tlayudas, Kuya Lord, Suzanne Goin, Capri Club, Franceco Allegro, The Arroyo Club, La Morra Pizzeria, Marino, and more. Restaurant critic Bill Addison recruited Jenn Harris to help him divide and conquer as they determined LA's best restaurants. Culinary historian Jessica B. Harris lays out the symbolism and traditions of Kwanzaa. Adeena Sussman continues her mother's tradition of Shabbat and shares a recipe for her grandmother's potato kugel. Chef Brian Polcyn knows his way around a meat pie. Rose Levy Beranbaum preaches the glory of cake.
It's the most wonderful time of the year, dear listener, and I'm talking of course about the advent of The LA Times 101 Best Restaurants list. Bill Addison and Jenn Harris dropped their picks at a highfalutin soiree earlier this week, and the reaction, as always, consists of everything from love to loathing. But what does it actually mean for Kato to earn the number 1 spot two years in a row, for restaurants like Bestia and Pijja Palace to fall off the list, and for new hot spots like Stella and Budonoki to be snubbed entirely? As you know, these kinds of questions eat Father Sal and I alive - so we decided to approach this year's list with a frankly deranged level of in-depth analysis. So buckle up, dear listener, because we've combed through every 101 list since 2013 to determine what exactly this year's list says about our city, its restaurants, and the people who write about them. Part 1 of our brand new series, Opening Cafe Esca. We're joined by accomplished hospitality pros Luke Reyes and Reilly Cox, the dream team behind the upcoming Coastal Italian gem slated to open in the Arts District in March of 2025. Luke and Reilly have agreed to visit us on the pod once a month to take us behind the scenes of all that's gonna go into opening their ambitious LA restaurant. Why are they doing this? Well, typically when restaurants open you just see a blurb in Eater or stroll by it on your morning walk, but there's tons of work that goes into opening a restaurant that often goes untold. Reilly and Luke are going to take us under the hood, sharing the good, the bad, the ugly, and of course the delicious. Think of this like a podcast version of The Bear Season 2, but with more City of Angels and far less family trauma. But first, Father Sal is with us to talk New York versus LA food, whether Kamala Harris' status as a foodie can actually help her win the election, and of course, to play a round of Chef's Kiss Big MIss with us. He also makes a BIG, MASSIVE announcement that you're not gonna wanna miss. All I've gotta say is, look out LA, there's a new daddy in town. Hosted by Kerry DiamondProduced by Catherine Baker and Jenna SadhuEdited by Jenna SadhuMusic by Tralala “All Fired Up”Welcome to the second episode of Hey Hey, L.A., a new miniseries from Radio Cherry Bombe where we talk to creatives putting their mark on the L.A. food scene. Our second guest is Jenn Harris—food columnist and video host for The Los Angeles Times. Born in Los Angeles, Jenn was lucky to have a Chinese grandmother on her mom's side and a Russian, British, and Jewish grandmother on her dad's who were both talented cooks. Most importantly, they happily shared their enthusiasm for food with their granddaughter. Jenn also discovered a love for writing as a child, so it's no surprise she wound up working as a food columnist in the city she loves. But as Jenn shares with host Kerry Diamond, it took her a while to get there professionally. Jenn talks about growing up in a multicultural household, her path to the Los Angeles Times food section, and those who inspired her along the way, including the paper's late, legendary food critic, Jonathan Gold. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 7, 2023 is: satiate SAY-shee-ayt verb Satiate is a formal word that means “to satisfy (something, such as a need or desire) fully.” // My curiosity about Nicole's Spring Fling costume, which she promised would be “corny,” was finally satiated when she arrived at the party dressed as an incredibly lifelike cob of corn, complete with tassels. See the entry > Examples: “Every time I near the end of dinner at Yangban Society, Katianna and John Hong's Art District restaurant, I experience the same dilemma. I'm happily satiated. ... I couldn't possibly eat another bite. The thought is actually painful. But for Katianna's cheesecake, I persevere.” — Jenn Harris, The Los Angeles Times, 21 Nov. 2022 Did you know? The time has come at last to share the “sad” history of satiate, by which we mean that the two words—sad and satiate—are etymologically connected, not that the details will have you reaching for the tissue box. Both satiate and sad are related to the Latin adjective satis, meaning “enough.” When we say our desire, thirst, curiosity, etc. has been satiated, we mean it has been fully satisfied (satisfy being another satis descendant)—in other words, we've had enough. Satiate and sate (believed to be an alteration and shortening of satiate) sometimes imply simple contentment, but often suggest that having enough has dulled interest or desire for more, as in “Years of globe-trotting satiated their interest in travel.” Sad, which in its earliest use could describe someone who was weary or tired of something, traces back to the Old English adjective sæd, meaning “sated,” and sæd shares an ancient root with Latin satis.

This week we're shaking things up, shifting from a "you've got to taste this" recipe to a "you've got to taste this" field trip! LA Times food writer and host of The Bucket List Jenn Harris knows more about L.A. food than most people twice her age; that's because she grew up here with a Jewish grandmother and Chinese grandmother who love to eat. Today she sends me to the San Gabriel Valley, specifically to the Kang Kang Food Court, for sheng jian bao: the dreamiest hybrid of a soup dumpling and a crispy bao you can imagine. We talk all about Jenn's discovery of this hole-in-the-wall (hint: her grandmother knows things) and then cover her career in food journalism, her friendship with Jonathan Gold, and whether or not we could pull off a matzo ball soup dumpling. In addition to the difficulties that burn survivors face in physical healing after a burn injury, burn survivors require assistance with the psychological challenges they face, such as a new identity and additional challenges with scarring and hospitalization. While it is important to have psychological assistance from trained mental health professionals, peer support has been clinically proven to aid recovery after a burn injury. In this episode, we discuss with a clinical social worker and Phoenix Society's Virtual Peer Support facilitator Jenn Harris, and burn survivor and trained Phoenix SOAR peer supporter Rich Casias about the various methods of peer support, why they're important, and how to get involved. The holiday season brings a lot of different and, at times, conflicting emotions. Why do we feel ‘grief,' and why can grief feel more present, bigger, or deeper during this time of year? In this episode, we talk with Jennifer Harris, MSW, LICSW, about grief—in all forms. Grief, described by Webster's Dictionary as “the pain of mind produced by loss, misfortune, injury, or evils of any kind; sorrow; regret”, is not an emotion we ever desire to feel—especially in a season pressured to feel immense joy. As a self-proclaimed ‘grief' nerd, Jenn Harris talks about why we feel it, how to manage it, and when to know when grief has become too much for us to handle. We dive deep into this topic and listen to Jenn's wisdom about her own grief journey and working with and supporting others with grief. In a phrase she borrows from a friend, Grief is “not moving on, but moving with.” In the burn community, we may experience many different types of grief—from loss of self to loss of a loved one, or even feelings of grief over the idea of gathering with family during this time of year. Jenn shares with us her wisdom and knowledge from her experiences as a therapist, Phoenix Society Virtual Support facilitator, and her experience with volunteering at Comfort Zone Camp, a program supporting children and families that are experiencing grief. Need a quick, yummy gift for Christmas or any other occasion? For generations of Californians, the answer has been a box of See's Candies. With stores that sport a black-and-white checkerboard design and offer a galaxy of sweets — chocolates, peanut brittle, butterscotch lollipops — the South San Francisco-based company is nostalgia in a box or bag.Today, L.A. Times food columnist Jenn Harris talks with host Gustavo Arellano about See's on the occasion of the chain's 100th anniversary. And you'd better believe some taste tests are involved. We know you've had fried chicken. Maybe you even love to douse your crunchy bird in hot sauce. But that is NOTHING compared to what Kim Prince is doing at her LA restaurant, Hotville Chicken. Born into the family that invented Nashville Hot Chicken, she is carrying on the Prince tradition, bringing their famous (and, naturally, secret) recipe to the West Coast. Just how hot are we talking? Let's put it this way: one of the heat levels is called TOE TAG. As in... You're probably leaving in a body bag if you finish a whole order. We had such a blast talking to Kim Prince, and as you'll hear, we also got VERY hungry. Her menu doesn't stop with chicken -- we're talking sweet teas, smoked mac & cheese, and.... Sorry, we lost our train of thought because we were salivating! The point is, Kim is an absolute legend -- hilarious, honest, and an absolute font of knowledge. Enjoy the episode and thank you to Jenn Harris for hooking us up with her! XOXO Ari & Sophie Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Joining us today is LA’s very own fried chicken queen: Jenn Harris! Her official title is senior writer for the LA Times Food section. Both sound equally cool to me. We talk about Jenn's childhood eating congee and mapo tofu in the San Gabriel Valley, her journey from maritime news to LA Times Food, and delve deep into the obsession that leads her to eat fried chicken every single day. Jenn also shocks me with her blasé attitude towards potatoes and later on we debate the merits of tacos vs. burritos. Jenn's "person" is her Grandma Tina from the Chinese side of her family (her other side is British/Russian/Jewish). And Grandma Tina’s signature dish is her sweet rice: a fried sticky rice with Chinese sausage. It makes appearances at every holiday dinner table and is one of Jenn’s favorite things to eat - find the recipe here. Jenn says her grandma taught her the importance of trying new things and to this day, credits her adventurous palate to her Grandma Tina. *** Check Jenn out on instagram: @jenn_harris_ Read her work for the LA Times here And watch Jenn's show, The Bucket List, here!

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law the "Fair Pay to Play Act" on Monday, a first-in-the-nation law that will make it easier for college athletes to profit from their own name, image, and likeness. The law doesn't go into effect until 2023, but it could be a major problem for the NCAA. Steve Berkowitz, reporter for USA Today Sports, joins us with more. Next, we got one step closer to our self-driving car future, but there were some hiccups. Tesla released a new feature to some of its customers called “Smart Summon” which would enable the car to leave a parking spot and navigate around obstacles to pick up its owner. The problem is that it didn't work out to well and led to some fender benders. Andrew Hawkins, transportation reporter at The Verge, joins us for what went wrong.
