In this episode of ADHD reWired, Eric Tivers welcomes Chris Hooten, a LinkedIn Top Facilitation Voice and certified neuro-mindfulness coach. With over 15 years of experience, Chris specializes in helping neurodiverse organizations foster inclusive communication, leadership, and workplace strategies. Eric begins the episode with a personal update, sharing his ongoing journey of overcoming burnout and a recent formal autism evaluation. He also highlights his interviews on Chasing Life with Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Entrepreneur on Fire, as well as the pressing need for advocacy in the face of recent policy changes that threaten diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The core discussion revolves around communication challenges in neurodivergent teams and how traditional workplace structures often fail to accommodate neurodiverse employees. Chris introduces the 4D Model of Neuroinclusive Communication—a framework designed to improve communication by making it more descriptive, deliberate, direct, and diverse. They discuss common workplace miscommunication issues, the pitfalls of platforms like Slack for neurodivergent individuals, and how managers can foster psychological safety. Chris also explores the systemic barriers that impact neurodivergent and marginalized individuals in professional spaces. They emphasize shifting away from medicalized, deficit-based narratives about neurodiversity and adopting an intersectional, affirming approach that values lived experiences. Eric and Chris conclude by reflecting on the evolving nature of work, the need for workplace wellness, and how neurodivergent individuals are often the first to recognize unsustainable work environments. Chris shares insights on fostering genuine inclusion rather than performative DEI efforts and provides strategies for improving workplace culture.

We are live and in person today at the American Quilt Society's Quilt Week in Paducah KY with our very special guest Bonnie Browning – AQS's Executive Show Director. Bonnie learned to sew - taught by her mom -at a young age. She made her first quilt top in 1979 in a Welcome Wagon Group in Burlington, IA. She finished her first quilt in college. Bonnie has won numerous awards with her quilting, including a third place at the 1986 AQS Quilt Show & Contest, Paducah, Kentucky. That quilt, A Little Bit of Candlewicking, is now in the collection of The National Quilt Museum (NQM). In the early 1980s, Bonnie was a member of the DBQs, a group of seven quilting friends in Dubuque, Iowa. The DBQs were the first group to develop a quilting challenge and publish the process in the Spring 1986 issue of American Quilter magazine. After becoming an NQA certified quilt judge in 1986, Bonnie began teaching and judging for quilt guilds and conferences across the U.S. and every continent except Antarctica. In 1999 Bonnie represented McCall's Quilting on the committee to select the Best 100 Quilts of the Twentieth Century.Bonnie became a Certified Teacher of Zentangle Art in 2011 and has since combined her love of drawing and quilting into Zentangle quilting designs. Bonnie served as a technical director for the AQS quilting television show, American Quilter that aired in 2005 on Lifetime Real Women. She has appeared on numerous TV shows and has written 13 books – one of which was a cookbook. Bonnie was named a Duchess of Paducah in April 1996. She takes us back to her youth! 4:03 – Why did Bonnie begin to quilt? It all began with America's bicentennial and a few long-term goals and her husband's transfer with JC Penney. 7:20 – So, what else about Bonnie's youth is worth noting? She tells us about making ornaments at Christmas. 8:28 – Bonnie's quilt “A little bit of candle wicking” now hangs in the National Quilt Museum. She walks us through its history and how she felt in the moment she found out she had won. 11:27 Who are the DBQ's? Bonnie tells us their story! And…their efforts were the genesis for national quilt challenges. 14:00 – What is Zentangle and why is Bonnie an expert in this art? She walks us through this wonderful story. 17:22 Bonnie has judged quilts on 6 of 7 continents…which once specifically stand out for her? 18:22 – In 1999 Bonnie represented McCall's quilting in choosing the 100 most influential quilts of the 20th century. Her this story from her unique and personal point of view. https://www.amazon.com/Twentieth-Centurys-Best-American-Quilts/dp/B000AMPHWE 21:29 – What's Quilt Camp for Kids? Bonnie tells us of this very special opportunity for kids through the National Quilt Museum. 24:21 – Bonnie has decided to retire after the 2024 AQS Show. How did it all begin for her in 1994. Bonnie takes us back through time to 1994 to recount those special days. 27:24 – What was it like in the early days? 28:43 – 2011…Easter Sunday…the big flood. What a story of Plan B! 35:55 – What else during her tenure made a deep impression. Well…it was hurricane Katrina and 10,000 quilts. And of course…9/11. 40:36 – Why had Bonnie decided to retire now? She shares her reasons and her plans for the future. 41:45 – What does she want her legacy to be? She shares this with us here. 43:43 – And…what's her dream? Well, she's not moving away from Paducah any time soon – although there is a lot of travel in her future! 45:20 – What question didn't I ask? There is a wonderful story of her trip to Japan… 50:34 – How can you keep in touch with Bonnie? www.bonniebrowning.com If you know someone who has an outstanding story that should be shared on this podcast, drop Meg a note to Meg@sewandsopodcast.com or complete the form on our website. Sit down with a group of kindergartners and ask, "Raise you hand if you're creative!" and every single child will raise their hand. Ask a room full of adults that same question, and you'll only get a few hands. So what happens between childhood and adulthood? It's not that we are no longer creative - perhaps we have just lost touch with our creativity! Diane Harpster (she/her) is all about reminding people of their inner creative, reminding them they are made in the image of the greatest Creator. With her Zentangle art, she connects with her own faith and with God, and by teaching that artform to others, she encourages them to do the same.About Diane (she/her)As a child, Diane was surrounded by women who made beautiful things with their hands using fabric, yarn, flowers, and fruits of their gardens, and more. It was through them that she learned that creating not only brings joy to the Creator but has the potential to bless others with beauty and joy as well. Diane is a certified Zentangle teacher, an artform founded by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. She has experienced the calming benefits of this meditative practice, and enjoys teaching others. She says, "Anyone who can hold a pen and write their name can do this!"Connect with us!Sign up to receive a little Gospel in your inbox every Monday Morning with our weekly devotional.Check out our website for various resources - including devotionals, journaling prompts, and even curriculumGet some Lady Preacher Podcast swag!Connect with us on Instagram and Facebook

In this episode, The Creativity Department is joined by the cofounders of the Zentangle® Method of artmaking – Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts! They share their story about Zentangle's creation, the experiences they've had with students in the classroom, and the work they are doing with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) researching the benefits of art on mental health.
Creativity doesn't have to mean art, writing or music. In this episode, Dr. Minette Riordan explains that all of us are inherently creative beings and that it is essential to our health and wellbeing that we access this part of ourselves. She shares some of her own powerful experiences of moving through challenging transitions and how creativity plays a role in the healing process. Dr. Minette Riordan is a modern-day Renaissance woman: artist, writer, award-winning entrepreneur and advocate for creativity as essential to the well-being of all people and our planet. She has built several successful businesses, worked with thousands of business owners and published three books, including her bestseller The Artful Marketer. Minette is the founder of the Confident Creative Framework, a simple and effective transformational process for helping others to own their artistry. She believes that when we are all working in our highest and best creative genius, we can solve all the world's problems. What You'll Learn from This Episode: We are a creative species and why it is essential for our health and wellbeing The many faces of “creativity”; it's not always what you might think Some of the reasons we stifle our natural creativity What the Zentangle movement is and how it can help you Why coloring, in particular, is so helpful to our overall health and happiness Death isn't the only experience that causes grief Why it's important to properly heal grief and other difficult emotions The importance of being connected to other women Three of Minette's favorite suggestions for creative play Some fascinating ways to use junk paper and old books Information on Minette's five-part video series gift for listeners Why it is essential to put self-care at the top of your list of priorities Why words can be restrictive in certain kinds of creativity Links Mentioned in This Episode: Website | Facebook | Twitter | LinkedIn
Have you struggled to stay present with meditation? Do you need a quick technique to help you overcome the stifling feelings of perfectionism? Can you use rhythmic art to help you build self-esteem? MEET CATHY BOYTOSCathy Boytos has spent most of her life creating art (Fine Art, Mixed Media, Photography and Botanicals). She is an award-winning Graphic Designer, but now devotes most of her time to Botanical Illustration Art and Zentangle® - a method of drawing structured patterns through dots, lines, curves, and orbs. Cathy left the corporate world as a Graphic Designer and became a certified Zentangle instructor in 2014. She immediately began teaching Zentangle classes in the Triangle area of NC, and although she has spent years selling and displaying her art at exhibitions, her passion has always lied in teaching it. IN THIS PODCAST:What is Zentangle? 03:26 Zentangle as a remedy for perfectionists 11:04 Using Zentangle as a practice of gratitude 15:42 Zentangle is not like doodling 26:38 What is Zentangle?Zentangle is more than an art method. It is comprised of a collection of patterns that are made up of various shapes. The beauty of it is that everything is already structured, and all you have to do is start drawing. Before you know it, you're going to end up with this beautiful piece of abstract art that most people had no idea they could do. (Cathy Boytos) After a Zentangle group art class, all the tiles that the art is drawn on are put together into one big piece. You can then see how everyone interprets and draws things differently, and it develops from an art class into a profound lesson. That is indicative of how we are as people. We're all different, and there's nothing wrong with any of us. We're all unique. (Cathy Boytos) Zentangle as a remedy for perfectionistsBecause the methodology behind the Zentangle method is a combination of structure and intuition, it can be a great remedy and soothing activity for perfectionists. It is just art and intuitive drawing. We don't put value judgments on it or think it has to be a certain way. Zentangle began as a form of mediation. This is why it does not work well under ego-driven, intellectual, and thought-centered work, like perfectionism. Using Zentangle as a practice of gratitudeWhen people find that they can do this, gratitude comes naturally. You become so grateful … [for] your life, your ability to do this … aren't we grateful that we can do this? (Cathy Boytos) People experience gratitude by completing Zentangle art because it allows them to focus on their experience in the present moment and see their abilities in a new light. They see what they can do, and often feel more confident afterward. The Zentangle can therefore also help people build up their self-esteem and self-confidence. It is all about the process and not the result. Zentangle is not like doodlingThere is a distinction between completing Zentangle art and doodling. Doodling is like mindless art. You may doodle when you are doing something else like talking on the phone or listening to a podcast. With Zentangle, you are mindful. You are intentional and present. You breathe deeply, stay present in the moment, and experience it fully. Vanesa's Bio:I am a visual artist, specializing in pattern drawing in ink.I am the founder and owner of Mariposa Arts; whose objective is to make creativity accessible to all communities as a healing tool.Being a cancer survivor, I found refuge in writing, drawing and photography during and after treatment. I became painfully aware at the lack of creative resources offered post cancer treatment. This began a passion project and in 2017 I piloted a program called Healing Through the Arts, to offer creativity for healing to cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers. One of my goals was to offer it at no cost to participants, because during a time when the sole focus should be on getting well, cost should not be an impediment. This type of healing, using creativity, should be accessible to all of us.I presently continue to grow and coordinate this program through a partnership with the Delaware Art Museum, local organizations and with the help of a generous grant. Our workshops offer participants ceramics, grief drumming, watercolor journaling, Zentangle© and painting classes. In March 2019, I became certified to instruct in the Zentangle Method. I love to share the ease and joy of this art method, especially when it is focused in learning a meditative drawing practice for wellness.I am proud to be involved in my local artist community through working as the Director of Lumina Arts Incubator and cofacilitating an Artist's Way Creative Cluster.I serve on the Delaware Shakespeare Board of Directors, and I am an active member of the Development Committee for their organization.I hold a Creative Catalyst Certificate, a program from the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. This program equipped me as an Artist Leader, Innovator and Entrepreneur. (May 2021)I am so pleased that the virtual nature of our world in 2020 afforded me the opportunity to work with Carla Rey and the international artist collective Instantes Graficos, based out of my home country, Argentina. I have learned techniques working with Artist's Books using many different mediums and book making methods. I explore themes of social justice, issues relating to immigrants and my healing journey. My books contain elements of writing, pattern drawing done in ink and photography. In January 2021, the collection Yo Creo, Todxs Somos Unxs made with this artist collective was exhibited at 1/1 Caja de Arte in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Three of my artist's books were presented and sold at this year's Printed Matter Virtual Art Book Fair in NYC.Contact: vanesa@mariposaarts.comFollow Vanesa Simon on Instagram @vanesamariposaarts.
