Send us a textWhat if your copy worked because you thought better, not because you wrote harder? That's the challenge David L. Deutsch lays down as we dive into the craft of response-driven writing—from Ogilvy roots to billion-dollar wins—and the mental models that make persuasion stick in the real world. We go beyond formulas and catchy lines to ask sharper questions: who is your reader, what does their day feel like, and what would actually move them now?David shares how he turns “boring” into compelling by reframing problems and dramatising the cost of inaction, a lesson echoed by the genius behind “Got Milk?”. We explore systems thinking for marketers—mapping loops, incentives, and constraints—so you fix the pattern, not just polish the prose. Music and copywriting meet as he explains pattern recognition, cadence, and structure; improvisation shows up in the yes-and approach that meets readers where they are and guides them forward without friction. And we talk about working with vistas in mind: motion, cities, and the right constraints that free your best ideas.Along the way, you'll hear why “consistently not stupid” beats “very intelligent,” how to write as if you're persuading across a table, and what it takes to make the obvious inevitable. We also touch on legacy—how capturing stories helps those who listen and those who tell—and the long view that puts craft, clarity, and human connection ahead of noise. If you want copy that gets response, these are the habits and mindsets to adopt.Enjoy the conversation, then try this: before you write your next line, map your reader's day, name their stakes, and decide the one action that would truly help. Our guest today does something I've been looking for in a guest on this podcast for a long time–he helps beginning copywriters get started and become success. Matthew Volkwyn is a coach, copywriter, marketer and entrepreneur. He doesn't just talk the talk; he walks the walk. Matt has helped dozens of business coaches rapidly grow their own businesses with email marketing, a he's built three six-figure businesses of his own. I invited Matt on after he had me as a guest on his podcast, and I found out he coaches beginning copywriters, which I don't do myself, since my clients are more experienced copywriters and business owners who use copy. I suggested he come on and we have a nuts and bolts conversation about coaching copywriters, and he readily agreed. Welcome to the ABIC Podcast, where we bring you the conversations that shape the future of our industry. Today's episode is all about voice, your voice and the authentic human voice and why it's the most powerful tool you have in an era where artificial intelligence is everywhere. Here's the truth: AI can write faster, but it can't write you. It can't capture the quirks, the soul, the lived perspective that makes words move people. And while every brand has a voice, not every brand knows how to use it. That's where a professional copywriter comes in, someone who can shape the authentic human voice of your brand into words that build trust, spark emotion, and make you unforgettable. To explore this, I'm joined by Rachel Medlock, a professional copywriter in the beauty and aesthetic industry whose work is instantly recognisable for its sass, originality and substance. Together we'll unpack why the authentic human voice, crafted by a professional, is the future, how you can protect and amplify it, and the science behind why humans still crave words written by humans. If you've ever wondered how to make your brand stand out in the age of AI, this conversation will show you why your voice, and your authentic human voice in the hands of a skilled copywriter, is your greatest competitive edge. The ABIC Podcast is an independent podcast that operates with the support of our listeners (that's you!) I've been in a transition season for two years. And for most of that time, I kept asking myself the same question: "Why is this taking so long?" If you've been feeling restless in your business, like you've outgrown what you've built but can't quite reach what's next—this episode is for you. Tune in To Learn: The emotional and logistical signs you're in a transition season (and why recognizing them changes everything) Why transition seasons feel so lonely—and why it's hard to talk about with people who aren't in one themselves What it actually means to live in the gap between who you were and who you're becoming Why the discomfort you're feeling isn't failure—it's growth What's possible on the other side of transition (and why it's worth staying in the gap) This is Episode 1 of The Shift Series—a 6-part mini-series on what it really takes to move from where you are to where you want to be. >> Pres 'Play' Now Not getting The Copy Classroom Newsletter yet?
Via her popular weekly column for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, Kate Halfpenny is known for speaking her mind, having an opinion and sharing it with the public. And now she’s written a book about her life, marriage, mental health – and the toll her husband’s drinking took on all of it. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll get to hear the inside story of how one column Kate wrote created a maelstrom of fury, which in turn led to the writing of her magnificent memoir Boogie Wonderland. Today I get to talk to Kate about how this book came about, how she dealt with online hate and how her decision to make a sea change from Melbourne's cosy hipster suburb of Collingwood to a sleepy ocean town led to a mid-life reckoning she neither expected nor wanted. What we cover: The surprising column that landed Kate a book deal. Why vulnerability is her greatest storytelling strength. How she handles online hate (including serious threats). Mental health strategies for navigating public backlash. The reality of writing about your own life and the people in it. Tips for pitching stories and landing a column in major publications. How AI is changing the writing business and what Kate’s doing about it. Read the show notes This podcast is brought to you by the Australian Writers' Centre. Hedy & Hopp CEO & Founder Jenny Bristow, Copywriter and Content Editor Sarah Zajicek, and SEO Marketing Specialist Yenny Rojas discuss AI and personas in healthcare marketing, focusing on AI's impact on search and the importance of writing tailored content for your website. They highlight that with nearly half of all searches now being questions directed at AI, marketers need to optimize content to answer these queries, adapting it for various practice sizes. Key strategies include prioritizing readability for both users and AI by incorporating bulleted summaries, FAQs, and FAQ schemas. Sarah notes that while AI tools can be incredibly useful in the content creation process, human oversight is necessary to ensure that the writing has a natural voice and that the content is medically accurate. Yenny emphasizes the importance of persona-based marketing, where content is customized to specific audiences and formats, facilitating AI's ability to recommend relevant information. Integrating personas into your content can look like including targeted examples, localized details, customer-focused calls to action, and using insights from Google Search Console.Connect with Jenny:Email: jenny@hedyandhopp.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennybristow/If you enjoyed this episode, we'd love to hear your feedback! If the thought of “showing up on social” makes you want to toss your phone out the window … you're not alone. Here's the truth: social media can help you grow your copywriting business—but not in the way most people think. (And if you're OVER social media, then skip this episode. You DO NOT have to be on social media to have a thriving business, no matter what you may hear from the social-media loving “gurus.”) On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Kate and I are talking exactly how to: ✅ Use social strategically (instead of endlessly scrolling) ✅ Pick the right platform for your clients (and ignore the rest) ✅ Post without feeling like you're shouting into the void ✅ Build trust and relationships—without pitching strangers in the DMs Whether you love social or hate it, you'll walk away with a clear, realistic plan for making it work for you (not the other way around). ----------------- Mentioned in the Episode Ep. 239: Do Copywriters Need a Personal Brand?5 Keys for Getting Valuable Connections on LinkedInUse Copywriting Networking to Help Land More Clients Related Links Ep. 173: How to Elevate Your Profile & Land Copywriting Clients on LinkedInWho You're Not Following on Social Media (But Should Be)Ep. 103: Becoming a Social Media Copywriter & Manager—Carli's Story ----------------- Get Free Copywriting Training here
I have been just as burned out as the next person. Before I became a copywriter, I was working at a health club, but my mental health was at its lowest. So, I related so deeply to Martin. Martin spent 15 (!!!) years as a police officer. To say he was burned out is an understatement. On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, he's sharing the moment he realized he needed his life—and his mental health—back. Of course, like ALL of us, he had doubts. His? “Am I too old to become a copywriter at 40?” Now, as someone well into her 40s, I'm going to let the use of “old” slide here. Because I get it. A career change that far along? When you've spent your entire life devoted to another profession? But if you relate to any of that, I'd encourage you to listen to Martin's story. Not only is he landing clients and creating an entire new career for himself, he's doing it without pitching (but leading with value? you bet

Copywriters are teachers. We teach customers how the products and services we write about help them. In this episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, I spoke with teacher turned copywriter Meredith Cooley about all the ways copywriters use their teaching skills. Even if you don't think you're a teacher, you'll learn a lot from this episode—including a simple copywriting lesson from Bluey. Yes, that Bluey. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: Turn the Page Newsletter The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Research Mastery Transcript: Rob Marsh: Copywriters are teachers. So should more teachers be copywriters? This is The Copywriter Club Podcast. A few years ago I had a conversation with one of my copywriting mentors. She mentioned that she had considered teaching as a possible career path. And I shared that I had the same thought when I started my career. Then we talked about the number of former teachers we knew who had left the classroom to write copy. And that's when it dawned on me that copywriting isn't just something that former teachers or potential teachers do. Copywriting is teaching. But instead of practicing that skill in a classroom, copywriters are teaching on the page or on the screen, helping potential customers learn about products and solutions, about processes and unique mechanisms, and how to solve the very real problems and pains they are experiencing in their lives. In the years since, I've interviewed close to a dozen former teachers on this podcast… people who are still teaching, just not in a formal classroom any more. Do you feel this as a copywriter? Do you see yourself as a teacher for your clients and their customers? My guest for today's podcast is Meredith Cooley, a teacher turned copywriter who has helped dozens of other teachers leave the classroom and become copywriters for various businesses around the world. Teachers have so many skills that copywriters need, from project management to engaging with stakeholders at various levels of a business. And perhaps most importantly, good teachers have to be able to take dry, boring content and make it exciting for an often disinterested and bored audience. And if you listened to last week's episode, you heard me talk about how I've started teaching marketing at a local college here in my home town. The crossover between teaching students and writing for customers is large. And that's what this episode is all about. Even if you don't see yourself as a teacher, this episode may change your mind about how you think about your relationship with the customers you write for. Before we get to our interview, this episode is brought to you by Research Mastery. Research Mastery is the one-stop program or course that will change your writing for the better. Instead of just organizing words, you'll have the tools and strategies you need to truly understand your customer so they relate to your offer and buy more often. Research Mastery digs into the 4 critical areas of research… if you miss one of them, your research just isn't complete. And it includes the A.I. tools you need to do research faster, more effectively, and more profitably. Most copywriters know the classics of our field—but today we're drawing from a master whose work predates modern advertising by more than two millennia. In this episode of Copywriters Podcast, we're unpacking Sun Tzu's The Art of War—a book written over 2,500 years ago, yet still shaping strategy for business titans like Elon Musk and Marc Benioff. While it was originally written as a guide to military conquest, The Art of War has long been praised for its universal principles of strategy and persuasion. The battlefield may have been different, but the parallels to winning in business—and especially in copywriting—are undeniable. In this episode, we'll show you how to translate Sun Tzu's wisdom into practical tactics for the written word. You'll discover how ancient principles of planning, positioning, and persuasion can sharpen your copy, strengthen your offers, and give you the edge in today's competitive marketplace. What's surprising is how naturally these lessons map to the challenges copywriters face every day. From anticipating objections, to winning quickly before attention fades, to making your offer feel like the natural choice—Sun Tzu laid out the playbook centuries before advertising even existed. This is part one of a two-part series, covering the first six chapters of The Art of War. If you've ever felt like writing copy is a battle for attention and trust, this episode will give you a fresh perspective—and some timeless strategies—to help you win more often.Download.

❌ Fancy logo ❌ Color palette ❓Personal brand You've probably heard us talk about all the shiny distractions when it comes to earning money as a copywriter. Is a “personal brand” another one? On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Kate and I are breaking down what a personal brand is and whether or not you need one to succeed in today's copywriting climate. Spoiler: just because you exist does not make you a brand. Want to know the biggest reason your marketing isn't working? It doesn't reflect you. Most ads are generic. They could work for any business. But the best ads only work for one—because they're built around the true personality of the founder or brand. They're specific, not because of the product, but because of who's behind it. That's what makes them powerful. That's what makes them real. That's the heart of relational marketing— which is what today's episode is all about.I'm joined by Roy H. Williams—better known as the “Wizard of Ads”—who has helped iconic companies like 1-800-GOT-JUNK craft ads that fueled billion-dollar growth. Over the past 40 years, Roy has advised hundreds of founders, showing them how to grow through story, truth, and personality, instead of gimmicks, hype, or shallow tactics. If you want to write ads that break through the noise and actually connect with your buyers, this episode will change the way you think about marketing forever. In this episode, you'll learn: 1.) How Roy helped grow 1-800-GOT-JUNK from $97M to $1B—by leading with truth and identity, not data or demographics.2.) Why identity—not logic—drives every buying decision, and how your brand can tap into who your customers really are in order to better serve them.3.) What makes a company truly remarkable—and the one question Roy uses to test if your marketing actually makes people care.4.) The 4 things every human is secretly looking for—and how to build them into your ads so people don't just notice you… they trust you.Show Notes: LifestyleInvestor.com/247Tax Strategy MasterclassIf you're interested in learning more about Tax Strategy and how YOU can apply 28 of the best, most effective strategies right away, check out our BRAND NEW Tax Strategy Masterclass: www.lifestyleinvestor.com/taxStrategy Session For a limited time, my team is hosting free, personalized consultation calls to learn more about your goals and determine which of our courses or masterminds will get you to the next level. The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
Title: How to Launch Therapy Intensives in Private Practice: An Interview with Steffeny Feld, LCSW Description:Curt and Katie chat with Steffeny Feld, LCSW, Therapist and Creator of the Intensive Design Lab, about how therapists can bring therapy intensives into private practice. We explore how therapy intensives differ from traditional therapy, how to structure and prepare for intensives, clinical considerations for both clients and clinicians, and why this model can be particularly supportive for highly sensitive or neurodivergent therapists. About Our Guest:Steffeny Feld is a Therapist, Copywriter, and the Creator of the Intensive Design Lab where she supports therapists of all backgrounds and modalities to launch therapy intensives in private practice. Steffeny believes that therapy intensives are powerful and transformative for clients and the clinicians who offer them. She supports therapists to bring intensives into their practice so that they can work less and earn more while helping clients heal. Steffeny lives in St Louis, Missouri with her partner and 4-year-old son, Felix. Key Takeaways: Therapy intensives offer a distinct therapy format, not just longer sessions. In this episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, we're talking about how con men, pick-up artists, magicians and yes, copywriters, use psychology and persuasion to get readers to pay attention and change their behavior. My guest is copywriter John Bejakovic who has just published a new book on the topic. If you want to be a better writer, click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: The 10 Commandments Book John's first interview The Katelyn Bourgoin Interview The Sarah Levinger Interview The Richard Armstrong Interview The Parris Lampropouos Interview The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground The How to Write Emotional Copy Masterclass Transcript: Rob Marsh: Looking for non-obvious ways to be more persuasive? Today we're talking about the ten commandments of con men, pick up artists, comedians and others. This is The Copywriter Club Podcast. Over the last couple of months, I've interviewed a couple of guests about psychology and persuasion… on episode 447 I talked with Katelyn Bourgoin and on episode 448, I spoke with Sarah Levinger. In both of those interviews we talked about using psychology and principles from behavioral economics and neuroscience. Today's episode covers similar ground in a very different way. My guest is copywriter John Bejakovic. John runs one of the best daily email lists out there, sharing his throughts on marketing, sales, and persuasion. He recently published a book about these topics called, The 10 Commandments of Con Men, Pick Up Artists, Magicians, Door-to-Door Salesmen, Hypnotists, Copywriters, Professional Negotiators, Political Propagandists, Stand Up Comedians, and Oscar-Winning Screenwriters. It's a long title for a short book that covers a lot of ground. I wanted to talk to John about the ideas in his book, but more than that, I wanted to discuss the ethics of using these kinds of tactics to get our readers and prospects to take action. If you want to be a better writer or a more effective communicator or simply want to help your children or customers or friends use information to make better decisions, I think you'll like this episode. These topics really appeal to me. Not just as a writer or marketer so I can use these techniques myself, but also as a consumer. You can't avoid the con men who use these tactics unless you understand the tactics and how they use them. Being smart is not enough to avoid responding positively to the ideas we talk about on this episode. Before we jump into our interview, a little while ago I recorded a masterclass to show copywriters, content writers and other marketers how to write “emotional” copy. Everyone says emotions sell, but how do you actually write emotional copy? I walk through more than a dozen examples in this masterclass and give you a proven process for figuring out the right emotions to focus on as you write… and how they change as you make your pitch. The masterclass includes several bonuses on storytelling, using A.I. to find dominant and transformational emotions, and much more. You can get this masterclass at thecopywriterclub.com/emotion And now, my interview with John Bejakovic. Rob Marsh: Hey, John, welcome back to the podcast. You were here, I think it was literally two years ago, Episode 365, where we talked about a lot of different stuff, and people maybe can go back and listen to that, but catch me up on what's been going on in your business, and this new book you've got. John Bejakovic: Yeah, sure. So, yeah, I was thinking about that. It's been about two years since I was on the podcast last and I think we talked about email and things like that, because that's kind of my bread and butter. And then at the end of that podcast, you were kind of asking me, what I'm what am I working on? And I was working on this book at that time, and the plan was to have this book, which is a kind of an intersection of different disciplines and ...

Do you remember when Kate and I shared allllll sorts of jobs you can do with a background in copywriting? (I totally get if you don't remember, but you can catch that podcast episode right here.) Thanks to CCA student Alba, we've got another one to add to that list: product marketer. On today's episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Alba was generous enough to join us from Spain (where, spoiler, she's from and now a homeowner!). She is sharing the full story that led her from working 60 hour weeks teaching in the UK to becoming a copywriter and, ultimately, landing a product marketing role that allows her to work from her home in Spain. Alba's journey is the perfect reminder that you never know where your career will take you. But if you're open to the possibilities, copywriting can take you places you may not even realize are options. I can't wait for you to hear all of Alba's wisdom (and how one of her first copy clients was the World Health Organization—how cool is that?!). ------------------ Mentioned in the Episode How Do I Know If I'm Ready to Pitch Copywriting Clients? How to Fast Track Your Copywriting Career SuccessEp. 203: Secrets to Smooth Copywriting Client Relations Related Links Ep. 59: Buying a New Home with Copywriting Income – Shannon's Story --------------- Get Free Copywriting Training here
