The Justice Minister isn't resting on his laurels following optimistic new crime data. The Crime and Victims Survey shows there were 147 thousand victims of serious violent crime in the year to August. That's 38 thousand fewer victims than when the coalition came into Government in 2023. Paul Goldsmith told Mike Hosking the outcome is a result of the Government going after gangs and the three-strikes law. He says it has also ended the last Government's culture of excuses. The once-illustrious University of Fort Hare has been in the headlines for Capture by a Corruption Mafia. But despite a spate of arrests, there has been no return to normality at the institution with governance being "almost non-existent". In this interview with BizNews, Grant Abbott, the General Secretary of the National Tertiary Education Union, and suspended SRC President Aphelele Khalakahla lay bare the culture of intimidation that now persists. “There is a prevailing sense of fear on campus…victimisation that continues against staff and against students. You would think that by now, with things at an advanced stage in terms of the court processes, with all the people that have been arrested that things will start normalising at the university, but it's actually not. It's continuing - and I would even say it's getting worse… Anyone who wants to speak out gets silenced,” charges Abbott. Khalakahla says: “We knew that obviously, even if we use university processes and escalate matters within the sector, we are going to be victimised. I am going to be the first victim. Calling for the head of Vice-Professor Sakhela Buhlungu, Abbott says: “…he needs to be relieved of his position with immediate effect. And if that doesn't happen, then the Minister needs to act.”

We did it! We've arrived at the final episode of Season 1. This episode picks up where episode 6 left off, by diving even deeper into the question: what's the relationship between empathy and morality? As always, you can find a (not Substack-generated) transcript of the episode, as well as a music-free remix, here.“Deliberative Empathy”In our last episode, we met Ryan.Ryan is a minister who has devoted his life to serving others. Yet, at one point, a psychologist told him he had “no empathy.”Surprisingly, Ryan could sort of see their point. He knew he experienced empathy differently than most people. He was even a little skeptical of whether empathy deserves the pedestal we often put it on.But hold on—even if empathy isn't perfect, couldn't it still be really important? In this episode, we explore a broader, richer view of empathy. Maybe empathy isn't a magic spark you either have or lack (which can be detected by a perfectly tuned psychometric test). Maybe empathy is more like a set of muscles we can exercise. According to this view, empathy is not merely a feeling, but a complex set of skills. These skills can look different from person to person, and can be learned, practiced, and strengthened over time.To help us unpack all this, we spoke with the philosopher Heidi Maibom, who makes the case that empathy is far more than an emotional reflex. Instead, Heidi argues that empathy is a deliberate practice that plays a crucial role in living a moral life.Topics Discussed* Recap! (00:24)* Why we care about (and try to measure) empathy: we often assume that having empathy is necessary for being a good person. (01:29) * The original (and very dangerous) myth that autistic people don't have empathy, and its relationship to the “ToM-deficit” view of autism. (01:52)* A new myth: autistic have empathy and have a ToM deficit—which means that autistic people are like the mirror image of psychopaths. But this new myth comes with problems of its own. (03:06)* There are so many different types of empathy! But are these long lists of different types of empathy useful? How are all these different types of empathy related? (06:32)* An alternative way of thinking about empathy: it's a four-step process (Fletcher-Watson and Bird, 2020) . The third step is the most important—and autistic people tend to be really good at that third step. (07:37)* But wait—maybe we need to further complicate how we think about empathy. (12:16)* Meet Heidi! (14:04)* Heidi's personal story illustrating the complexity of the empathy process. (14:56)* Heidi's view of empathy: it's a set of skills that allows us to navigate interpersonal negotiations. (17:40)* It's totally possible that autistic people engage in this process differently—but that doesn't entail any sort of “empathy deficit.” (18:17)* We should think about empathy developmentally. (20:27)* Recall: some people are pretty skeptical of empathy's importance. (22:23)* But in spite of these criticisms, Heidi maintains that empathy is really important. (24:33)* Heidi suggests some ways to “do” empathy better. (26:56)* Heidi thinks empathy is important for living a good, moral life, because morality isn't just a simple set of rules. (28:49)* Empathy is also helpful for reflecting on your own actions (hat-tip to Sartre). (32:02)* Plus, empathy is useful for recognizing the full value of other people. (33:06) * Heidi's response to the criticism that empathy is biased. (33:52)* The complexity of the empathy process opens up many different ways of “doing” empathy. (37:58)* We can all deliberately practice flexing our empathy muscles. Could this help non-autistic people empathize with autistic people? Fall-out from the bombshell dropped by General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the dangers of whistleblowing in South Africa are back in the spotlight. On the latest Sunday Show, journalist Chris Steyn speaks to Forensic Attorney Sarah Burger about the killings, character assassinations and income destruction of whistleblowers who expose politicians and the politically connected. “I believe that a lot of the prominent whistleblowers in South Africa have been politically targeted. And that is why they sit 10 years on without any movement in those matters and without, for instance, larger accounting firms being held accountable. So there is a lot of political interference.” Burger says one of the reasons there is a lack of reforms to protect whistleblowers is to ensure instead that corrupt politicians and their associates stay protected. “Absolutely, it is not in their interest to stop feeding…” Burger also describes the horrors being endured by her and top Labour Lawyer Bradley Conradie after they had spent years reporting and exposing malfeasance and corruption at Fort Hare University. “…last year in 2024, shortly before the ANC and the elections and the campaigning took place, myself and Bradley were arrested in a militarised fashion, discredited, intimidated, embarrassed - and all of the good work that we did there over four and six years now hangs in the balance.” Despite currently fighting an epic legal battle for professional survival, Burger urges whistleblowers to keep exposing corruption.

Bad governance involving collusion between councils and management is enabling corruption and capture at some of South Africa's historic universities. That is the charge from National Tertiary Education Union Secretary General Grant Abbott who says: “We've coined the term, you use the Corruption Mafia and that's a very good term. We've also coined the term University Capture in the line of State Capture that we see a lot of that unfortunately happening.” Abbott describes the “systemetic targeting” of whistleblowers and union leaders, including his union president who was kidnapped and tortured before being dismissed. “…it had happened one Sunday night, 12 men arrived at his house. We later learned that three of them were police officers. They did not produce an arrest warrant or anything like that, but you can imagine 12 men arriving at your house and he's at home on a Sunday evening with his wife and children. And they have AK-47s and big rifles and dressed in police uniform, and tell him he must come with them. They proceeded to then take him to an undisclosed location and tortured him for seven hours, allegedly trying to get him to confess to involvement somehow in the attempted assassination on the Vice Chancellor back then.” The CCMA has now overturned the dismissal and ordered his reinstatement. Abbott also comments on the case of the corruption-busting lawyers who now find themselves in the dock alongside some of the people they had investigated. He outlines the union's proposals to stop the corruption at and capture of higher education institutions.

We're familiar with the idea that history shapes contemporary politics, but what about the reverse? How do today's political dynamics influence the way we remember the past?In this episode, we explore a compelling study that examines this question in the context of Ukraine—a country caught between conflicting historical narratives from Russia and the West.Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the nation has endured not only a devastating war but also an intense battle over history, identity, and legitimacy. Yet, these struggles are deeply rooted in Ukraine's complex past. The study we discuss was conducted in 2019, offering a snapshot from before the war. It investigates how Ukrainians recall their families' experiences of victimisation during the Second World War and whether these memories are shaped by their present-day political beliefs.Joining us to discuss these findings is Kristin Bakke, Professor of Political Science and International Relations at UCL and co-author of the study.

With a reported 60% of employees reported experiencing workplace bullying within the last 6 months , the negative effect of mistreatment on their work-related attitudes and performance, as well as their general health, can be far-reaching and long lasting , What is causing this alarming rate of anti-social behaviour? An international team of researchers, including Dr Kenneth Tai from Singapore Management University, collectively predicted that gender and bottom-line mentality would have an interactive effect on mistreatment in the workplace. Their findings recommend that a more balanced approach is taken to victimisation theories relating to workplace mistreatment, as team characteristics need to be taken into account in addition to the interaction between the victim and the perpetrator. Workplaces encourage and push the narrative of the 'good person' not allowing for questions or mistakes but instead placing undue pressure on staff to be perfect without mistake, question,  consideration, or exception. In this episode, we explore our need to be the 'Good Person' and why we continue to allow this toxic persona to control and govern how we navigate work, especially during the vulnerable times of probation or leading up to promotions and bonuses. What is clear is we have all suffered from 'The Good Person Syndrome' some of us still do and are buckling under that pressure. Let's discuss. In this episode, we will also be discussing the latest Employment Tribunal judgment where a 39-year-old White Woman took her employer's Gartner Consultancy to court for Bullying, Victimisation, less favorable treatment, and constructive dismissal. She won part of her claim, one being the use of the derogatory term used by her employer referring to her as a 'Good Girl'. The judge set a precedent and his statement justifying his ruling is a turning point that we all need to be aware of.Email me:  hello@toyatalks.com   Twitter: @toya_w (#ToyaTalksPodcast)   Snapchat: @toyawashington   Instagram: @toya_washington & @toya_talks YouTube: At Home With Toyahttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbXlRNLSYLuA9GbPB8cUYvQwww.toyatalks.comhttps://toyatalks.com/

We've all seen it before. Someone claims that they are the victim, then uses the label of victimhood to justify all of their actions. This occurs on all sides of the political spectrum and is in fact a very human thing to do. In this video, Warren and I examine this phenomenon, with hopes of getting to the very bottom of the dilemma and solving this problem for the better. I hope you enjoy this video.--------------------------To check out more about my content feel free to go to my YouTube Channel Apologetics for All to access clips and extra discussions

The fact of re-victimisation is a known phenomenon in professional trauma recovery circles. People who have been bullied, abused or traumatised in early life are especially vulnerable to human predators. Some will put this vulnerability down to weak boundaries, natural subservience, lack of assertiveness or anxious and dependent attachment tendencies. Whilst these explanations may be true in part, the conundrum of re-victimisation is far more complex and interdependent than any single issue.
