Big Idea:God can grow saints in any soil.1 Corinthians 1:1-9I.Every plant starts from a seed.1 Corinthians 1:1Paul, called as an apostle of Christ Jesus by God's will, and Sosthenes our brother:II.Every saint starts from a sinner. 1 Corinthians 1:2-3To the church of God at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called as saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord—both their Lord and ours. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.III.Every strong tree starts from a struggling sapling.1 Corinthians 1:4-9I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus, that you were enriched in him in every way, in all speech and all knowledge. In this way, the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you, so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; you were called by him into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.Next Steps: Believe: I need Jesus to transform me from a sinner to a saint. Become: I will allow the Holy Spirit to grow me toward Christ's likeness this week. Be Sent: I will put my faith on display this week.Discussion Questions: Describe the goal to which God wants to grow you. How did you grow this week? Do strong winds prevent trees from growing?  Do you look, act, and think more like a saint this week than last?Who started your growth as a follower of Christ?Name someone who you believe needs to grow in their faith. Pray for the Holy Spirit to use you to encourage their faith this week.

Is Your Religious Résumé Rubbish? Discussion Questions for Philippians 3:1-16: Read verse Paul describes true worshippers as those who “put no confidence in the flesh.” What does it mean to put confidence in the flesh, and how do people today seek status and worth in worldly ways? What's the solution? Read verses 4-Paul lists his impressive credentials under the Law. Why does he bring these up? What false sources of righteousness do people rely on today? Read verses 7-Paul says he considers everything loss compared to knowing Christ. How does this perspective change how we view achievements, failures, and identity? Read verse Paul contrasts “a righteousness of my own derived from the Law" with "the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ.” How does this verse clarify the gospel, and why is it important for us to rest in Christ's righteousness? Read verses 10-11 and react to this statement: Knowing the fellowship of Christ's sufferings and being conformed to His death is not about “dying to self” but about living in the reality of Christ's finished work and embracing His sufferings (in this fallen world). Read verses 12-1Paul says he hasn't already “obtained it” or “become perfect.” What does he mean? How does this passage encourage us to press forward while also resting in our secure identity in Christ? (Hint: Contrast this with verse 15 which says we are “perfect.”) Read verse 1Paul talks about pressing toward the “the prize of the upward call.” What is this prize, and how does it differ from the world's idea of success? Read verses 15-1Paul encourages mature believers to have this mindset. What does maturity look like, and how does it relate to what “we have attained” (verse 16)?

Let Freedom Ring Part One: Free to Serve Jesus, Gal. 1:1-10 By Louie Marsh, 6-2-2024   Intro – New Bible Trans – Map of Galatia,  To be free to serve Jesus I need to know 4 things:   1) Know  WHERE  my loyalties lie.   “1Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead— 2and all the brothers with me, To the churches of Galatia:” (Galatians 1:1–2, BSB)   I serve GOD not MAN.   This gives me… AUTHORITY   1Paul, an Apostle, not from man or through men's authority but directly from Jesus Christ and God the Father, the One who raised Him from among the corpses.  2And everyone with me, to the congregations in Galatia. Galatians 1:1-2 (LIV)   Not a translation or a paraphrase – but a Paralation! CONFIDENCE POWER PURPOSE   2) Know THE GOSPEL   “3Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave Himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Galatians 1:3–5, BSB)   “3For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that He appeared to Cephas and then to the Twelve. 6After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles.” (1 Corinthians 15:3–7, BSB)   3) Know the COUNTERFEITS   “6I am amazed how quickly you are deserting the One who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7which is not even a gospel. Evidently some people are troubling you and trying to distort the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a curse! 9As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be under a curse!” (Galatians 1:6–9, BSB)     “4For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus other than the One we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit than the One you received, or a different gospel than the one you accepted, you put up with it way too easily.” (2 Corinthians 11:4, BSB)   4) Know that I can't please EVERYONE.   “10Am I now seeking the approval of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.” (Galatians 1:10, BSB)   And I shouldn't even be TRYING TOO.   So I must choose to please either…   GOD  or MAN.

Trusted & Trustworthy – A Biblical View of Stewardship Part One: A Steward is a Servant By Louie Marsh, 1-14-2024       1) When I come to Christ I become a SERVANT.   “1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,” (Romans 1:1, ESV)   This is a radical shift in how I understand and live my life   “14For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.” (2 Corinthians 5:14–15, ESV)   I become a servant and a steward:   “1This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. (1 Corinthians 4:1 ESV)   2) This makes decisions SIMPLE.   “1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (Ephesians 5:1–2, ESV)   o   If God's Word says no I say no – plain and simple o   If Bible says yes then I do it.   Doesn't always work that way in life – it's a theory – but still makes things simpler.   “15Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” (Ephesians 5:15–17, ESV)   3) It REORIENTS my entire view of reality.   No longer about me – finding joy or peace, or success or self actualization or whatever.   “23And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.  (Luke 9:23, ESV)   “4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.” (Philippians 2:4–7, ESV)   4) It frees me from the BURDEN of self   Life isn't all about me – I'm free to be and do all that God has gifted me to do.   “16Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord: 17Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up till this day, shall be carried to Babylon. Nothing shall be left, says the Lord. 18And some of your own sons, who will come from you, whom you will father, shall be taken away, and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” 19Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “Why not, if there will be peace and security in my days?”” (2 Kings 20:16–19, ESV)   5) It UNVEILS  the true purpose of my life.   When I let go of myself I find real self-satisfaction.   24For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?” (Luke 9:24–25, ESV)   “36For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, 37but he whom God raised up did not see corruption.” (Acts 13:36–37, ESV)

Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” 18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” 21They answered, “The emperor's.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's.”22When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 24th of June, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Philippians 3:17-18: “Brethren, join in following my example, and note that those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:…” We need to follow the pattern. You see, Joshua followed his mentor, Moses. That was his pattern. Elisha followed the great prophet, Elijah. That was his pattern. Timothy followed the pattern of the apostle, Paul. You and I need to follow the pattern of King Jesus, our beloved Lord and Saviour. “Imitate me just as I also imitate Christ.”1 Corinthians 11:1Paul, the apostle said that. I looked up the Oxford Dictionary to find out the exact definition of the word “pattern.” A pattern is a model. A pattern is an example for other people to follow. You know, when I look back on my own life, when I was a very young farmer, just starting on my own in Zambia, I had two gentlemen that I was working for. They were very successful farmers. The work ethic they taught me and showed me has stayed with me all my life. They were always first on the job in the morning and they were always last to leave the job in the evening. They would make sure that all the animals on the farm were fed before they could go and have their breakfast. Their dress code was impeccable, boots shining, clean clothes on every single day. They were an example to me. They carried a notebook in their top pocket and everything that they asked me to do, they had written it down before they came to work. I did that all my farming career and I still carry notebooks with me to this day as an evangelist. What we believe is so important. You know folks, the world is desperate for example patterns because there is nothing you can trust these days. There is no one who knows where he is going in the world. Peter, the disciple, was asked by Jesus, “But who do you say that I am?” You will find that in Matthew 16:15-16. And what did Peter say? He said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Like never, ever before, the world is looking for someone, for people to speak the truth and who are good, solid examples. The world stands aside for a man who knows where he is going. Let's be those men and women today.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”1 Kings 3:9“Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints?“ 1 Corinthians 6:1Paul says, “How can you go to an unrighteous, secular court to sort out problems when you as believers have all the answers? You see Solomon asked God for wisdom to govern his people. Solomon wasn't born with wisdom, he was an ordinary person like you and me, but because he asked God for wisdom, God gave him wisdom, so much so that the whole world was in awe of this man. The Queen of Sheba from Ethiopia, travelled something like 3 months to get to Jerusalem to come and visit this man because of the incredible wisdom that he had. She came with very difficult questions and she was amazed. He answered every single question. It took her ages to get to Israel, and she asked those hard questions and Solomon answered every one of them. I want to tell you, Jill and I have been to Ethiopia. They have been worshipping the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, for no less than 3,000 years. They have got an ancient language that is thousands of years old. These are highly intelligent people, and yet they went all the way to Israel to listen to the counsel of Solomon. Why? Because Solomon asked God. That is why.The Apostle, Paul, asks us, the believers, not to go to a secular court where there is no divine intervention to settle our grievances and our problems. We must go to God like Solomon did and He will give us the solutions to our disagreements. I am talking about fathers and sons, business partners, and marriage problems. We just need to sit down, pray and ask God to give us the answers - and do you know something? He will do it!Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day.Goodbye.

Second Sunday after the Epiphany The Collect: Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament: Isaiah 49:1-7 1Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother's womb he named me. 2He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. 3And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” 4But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God.” 5And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the Lord, and my God has become my strength— 6he says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” 7Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, “Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.” Psalm: Psalm 40:1-12 1 I waited patiently upon the Lord; *        he stooped to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; *        he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure. 3 He put a new song in my mouth,   a song of praise to our God; *        many shall see, and stand in awe,        and put their trust in the Lord. 4 Happy are they who trust in the Lord! *        they do not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods. 5 Great things are they that you have done, O Lord my God!   how great your wonders and your plans for us! *        there is none who can be compared with you. 6 Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! *        but they are more than I can count. 7 In sacrifice and offering you take no pleasure *       (you have given me ears to hear you); 8 Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required, *        and so I said, “Behold, I come. 9 In the roll of the book it is written concerning me: *       ‘I love to do your will, O my God;        your law is deep in my heart.”‘ 10 I proclaimed righteousness in the great congregation; *        behold, I did not restrain my lips;        and that, O Lord, you know. 11 Your righteousness have I not hidden in my heart;    I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; *        I have not concealed your love and faithfulness from the great congregation. 12 You are the Lord;    do not withhold your compassion from me; *        let your love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever, Epistle: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9 1Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, 2To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: 3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, 5for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind— 6just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you— 7so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.9God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Gospel: John 1:29-42 29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.' 31I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 34And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.” 35The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. 40One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). 42He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

Fourth Sunday of Advent The Collect: Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament: Isaiah 7:10-16 10Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, 11Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. 12But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. 13Then Isaiah said: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. 15He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted. Psalm: Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18 1 Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph like a flock; *        shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim. 2 In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, *        stir up your strength and come to help us. 3 Restore us, O God of hosts; *        show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. 4 O Lord God of hosts, *        how long will you be angered        despite the prayers of your people? 5 You have fed them with the bread of tears; *        you have given them bowls of tears to drink. 6 You have made us the derision of our neighbors, *        and our enemies laugh us to scorn. 7 Restore us, O God of hosts; *        show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. 16 Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, *        the son of man you have made so strong for yourself. 17 And so will we never turn away from you; *        give us life, that we may call upon your Name. 18 Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; *        show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. Epistle: Romans 1:1-7 1Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, 3the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, 6including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7To all God's beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Gospel: Matthew 1:18-25 18Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”22All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” 24When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost The Collect: Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift that your faithful people offer you true and laudable service: Grant that we may run without stumbling to obtain your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament: Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4 1The oracle that the prophet Habakkuk saw. 2O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? 3Why do you make me see wrong-doing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. 4So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous— therefore judgment comes forth perverted. 1I will stand at my watchpost, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. 2Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. 3For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. 4Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith. Psalm: Psalm 119:137-144 137 You are righteous, O Lord, *         and upright are your judgments. 138 You have issued your decrees *         with justice and in perfect faithfulness. 139 My indignation has consumed me, *         because my enemies forget your words. 140 Your word has been tested to the uttermost, *         and your servant holds it dear. 141 I am small and of little account, *         yet I do not forget your commandments. 142 Your justice is an everlasting justice *         and your law is the truth. 143 Trouble and distress have come upon me, *         yet your commandments are my delight. 144 The righteousness of your decrees is everlasting; *         grant me understanding, that I may live. Epistle: 2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12 1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of everyone of you for one another is increasing. 4Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring. 11To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, 12so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Gospel: Luke 19:1-10 1He entered Jericho and was passing through it. 2A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. 5When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” 6So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. 7All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.”8Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” 9Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”

Fifth Sunday after Pentecost The Collect: O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people who call upon you, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Track 1 Track 2 Old Testament: Amos 7:7-17 7This is what he showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. 8And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “See, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass them by; 9the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.” 10Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the very center of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. 11For thus Amos has said, ‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land.'” 12And Amaziah said to Amos, “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; 13but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.” 14Then Amos answered Amaziah, “I am no prophet, nor a prophet's son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore trees,15and the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.' 16“Now therefore hear the word of the Lord. You say, ‘Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not preach against the house of Isaac.” 17Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Your wife shall become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be parceled out by line; you yourself shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.'” Psalm: Psalm 82 1 God takes his stand in the council of heaven; *         he gives judgment in the midst of the gods: 2 “How long will you judge unjustly, *         and show favor to the wicked? 3 Save the weak and the orphan; *         defend the humble and needy; 4 Rescue the weak and the poor; *         deliver them from the power of the wicked. 5 They do not know, neither do they understand;    they go about in darkness; *         all the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6 Now I say to you, ‘You are gods, *         and all of you children of the Most High; 7 Nevertheless, you shall die like mortals, *         and fall like any prince.'” 8 Arise, O God, and rule the earth, *         for you shall take all nations for your own. Epistle: Colossians 1:1-14 1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father. 3In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 4for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel 6that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. 7This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, 8and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit. 9For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. 11May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Gospel: Luke 10:25-37 25Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” 27He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.” 29But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.35The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' 36Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Philemon Week One: Love Is Always a Choice By Louie Marsh, 3-6-2022   In Troubled Times…   1) I should REMEMBER my roots.   “1Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved fellow worker 2and Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house: 3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philemon 1–3, ESV)   Grace brings   “8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,” (Ephesians 2:8, ESV)   Grace gives me   2) I should THANK GOD for what He's done.   “4I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, 5because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints, 6and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ. 7For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.” (Philemon 4–7, ESV)   3) I should strive to MEASURE UP to God's Call.   “8Accordingly, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what is required,” “9yet for love's sake I prefer to appeal to you—(Philemon 8,9a, ESV)   “required” = “to have arrived at, reached to, pertained to,” came to denote “what is due to a person, one's duty, what is befitting.”   4) God calls me to GROW UP into His Will.   “18Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” (Colossians 3:18, ESV)   “4Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.” (Ephesians 5:4, ESV)   NOT ON OUTLINE:  “15Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,” (Ephesians 4:15, ESV)   5) When I fail, He does not FORCE me.   “20And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” 21And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” (Mark 10:20–22, ESV)   6) God's Love always give me a CHOICE & ACCOUNTABILIITY.   Two ways to move people forward: Force of Law   Command of Love   “7Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” (Galatians 6:7–8, ESV)   “24Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” (Luke 18:24, ESV)

We decree over your lives the blessings of divine grace and supernatural peace.”    TPT (2022) 1From Paul and Timothy, both of us servants of Jesus, the Anointed One. To all his devoted followers in Philippi, including your pastors, and to all the servant-leaders of the church. 2May the blessings of divine grace and supernatural peace that flow from God our wonderful Father, and our Messiah, the Lord Jesus, be upon your lives.   GALATIANS 2:19:   “19For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God.” (Galatians 2:19, ESV)   TPT (22016) “so that I can live for God in heaven's freedom”   TPT (2022) 19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God.          Examples of Adding Words & Phrases to the Text:   THE LORD'S PRAYER IN LUKE:   ESV Translation: “1Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread, 4and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”” (Luke 11:1–4, ESV)   TPT (2022) 1One day, as Jesus was in prayer, one of his disciples came over to him as he finished and said, “Would you teach us a model prayer that we can pray, just as John did for his disciples?” 2So Jesus taught them this prayer: “Our heavenly Father, may the glory of your name be the center on which our life turns.  May your Holy Spirit come upon us and cleanse us.  Manifest your kingdom on earth. 3And give us our needed bread for the coming day.  4Forgive our sins as we ourselves release forgiveness to those who have wronged us. And rescue us every time we face tribulations.”   TBT (2022) Lord's Prayer In Matthew: 9Pray like this: ‘Our Beloved Father, dwelling in the heavenly realms, may the glory of your name be the center on which our lives turn.  10Manifest your kingdom realm, and cause your every purpose to be fulfilled on earth, just as it is in heaven. 11We acknowledge you as our Provider of all we need each day. 12Forgive us the wrongs we have done as we ourselves release forgiveness to those who have wronged us. 13Rescue us every time we face tribulation and set us free from evil. For you are the King who rules with power and glory forever. Amen.'    The Deeper Issue with this “translation”   It focuses the reader upon themselves rather than on God. The first part of the Lord's prayer is all about focusing on God. This model prayer of Jesus teaches us to focus on God first – not ourselves. Yet the Passion Translation turns our attention immediately to ourselves with the Holy Spirit line.   So not only is there NOTHING about the Holy Spirit in the text – his choice to add to the Lord's prayer derails what Jesus is trying to do with it! So we end up doing the exact opposite of what Jesus is leading us to do!   All translations struggle with being produced in a particular time and place. Your culture does impact how you translate things. The job of a good translator – and good Bible Teachers as well for that matter – is to minimize the impact.   Here we see the Passion Translation being as modern as you can get. It seems determined to get me and myself and my problems and my ego into view as often as possible. Even when the sinless and perfect Son of God make sure to exclude those!   Jesus is trying to get us to see that one of the first things prayer should do is to pull us out of ourselves and remind us how glorious, holy, perfect and pure God really is. Then, once I've got my eyes focused on Jesus again, once I can begin to see things from God's perspective, then and only then do I bring my needs to my Father.   This translation destroys that and it does it by adding to the text while changing the focus of the passage. It actually perverts Jesus intention in saying this.   The Bottom Line:   1) It's a paraphrase, not a translation, and that's what it should be called.   2) The misuse of the Syriac Aramaic translation must be abandoned and corrected.   3) The practice of inserting entire phrases and sentences into the text must cease and be corrected.   If these things are not done then this so-called translation which is really a paraphrase, should be avoided by all who seriously seek to honor, understand and practice God's Word.

Life As It Was Meant To Be Part 4: Building Great Relationships Louie Marsh, 7-4-2021     1) PUT OTHERS ahead of myself.   “1Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left behind at Athens alone, 2and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith,” (1 Thessalonians 3:1–2, ESV)   Don't be selfish; don't live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Philip. 2:3 (NLT)   Not Neurotic living of performance for acceptance, which we've talked about last week, but being humble – CHOOSING to serve others because of the love of Christ!   2) Focus on ENCOURAGING others.   “2and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith, 3that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this.” (1 Thessalonians 3:2–3, ESV)   Remember Paul was in JAIL – he had his own problems yet was concerned about others too!   “9He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.” (Titus 1:9, ESV)   Encouragement comes in many forms – teaching (doctrine) is one, but only one way to encourage those around you – you discover what kind of encouragement to use NOT by checking with how YOU feel or what YOU think – but by discovering THEIR condition and then responding appropriately.   3) TELL the whole ugly truth!   “3that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. 4For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, just as it has come to pass, and just as you know.” (1 Thessalonians 3:3–4, ESV)   Paul was honest – the truth isn't always ugly – but it often is, we must tell it like it is, with love!   “18“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” (John 15:18, ESV)   Jesus was honest, at times brutally honest – let's not sugar coat the truth – but tell it truthfully and skillfully.   4) OPENLY SHARE my struggles.   “7for this reason, brothers, in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith.” (1 Thessalonians 3:7, ESV)   Paul didn't make the mistake we often do – thinking we must remain stoic, not revealing our trouble so we can help others!  A generation ago Ministers were actually taught never to let their members see them without a tie on!!  That's not a biblical approach – instead honest openness is what we need if we are to build real relationships.   5) FREELY EXPRESS  my deepest feelings.   “8For now we live, if you are standing fast in the Lord.” (1 Thessalonians 3:8, ESV)   Paul wasn't embarrassed to open his heart and let them know how much he cared for them. How about us??   “1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus, 2To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.” (2 Timothy 1:1–2, ESV)   Timothy wasn't his son, yet he loved him like one and was afraid to say so in a very public forum!   …and the secret ingredient is…   PRAYER that is…   THANKFUL   “9For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God,” (1 Thessalonians 3:9, ESV)   INTENSE   “10as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith?” (1 Thessalonians 3:10, ESV)             Story of boy having to say his prayers, and his “Ditto” prayer!   RELATIONAL   “11Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you,” (1 Thessalonians 3:11, ESV)   DEEP   “12and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you,” (1 Thessalonians 3:12, ESV)   CHRIST Centered & ETERNITY minded.   “13so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.” (1 Thessalonians 3:13, ESV)

1st Thessalonians: Life as It Was Meant to Be Part One: First Things First! Louie Marsh, 6-13-2021       “1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace.” (1 Thessalonians 1:1, ESV)   God's Grace Allows Me To…       1) Enter God's Family by COMMITTING my life to Christ.   “11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,” (Titus 2:11, ESV)   “6But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.” (Romans 11:6, ESV)   Paul says that the Christian faith turns how you look at things on its head! Normally we start by working hard and then eventually reach our goal. Not so here – you start by accepting the gift of salvation and THEN work hard because of the joy the gift brings! Otherwise grace isn't grace!   “5he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:5–7, ESV)   If you think you are supposed to get good enough or get it together enough and then come to Christ – you are wrong!!  First to receive the gift – then you get it together – by His power!   2) Enter into God's Presence through PRAYER.   “18O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy.” (Daniel 9:18, ESV)   God hears and answers our prayers because of His Grace - He doesn't have too!   “16Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16, ESV)   Because of Grace we can be bold with God - He isn't going to squash us if we ask for the wrong thing!   3) Enter into God's Purpose through SERVICE.   “12I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, 13though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 1:12–14, ESV)   I'm so grateful to Christ Jesus for making me adequate to do this work. He went out on a limb, you know, in trusting me with this ministry. The only credentials I brought to it were invective and witch hunts and arrogance. But I was treated mercifully because I didn't know what I was doing—didn't know Who I was doing it against! Grace mixed with faith and love poured over me and into me. And all because of Jesus. 1 Tim. 1:12-14 (Mes)   Grace is the door way to finding and fulfilling our purpose in life! What's that? It's serving God and others in that special way the He made you for! If you are not serving God, you are cheating everyone, and cheating yourself most of all!   4) Enter into God's Power through FAITH.   But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 1 Cor. 15:10   See the mystery – Paul worked BUT it was really Christ working in Him, it's hard to tell who's doing who when we are one with Christ!   But because God was so gracious, so very generous, here I am. And I'm not about to let his grace go to waste. Haven't I worked hard trying to do more than any of the others? Even then, my work didn't amount to all that much. It was God giving me the work to do, God giving me the energy to do it. 1 Cor. 15:10 (Mes)   and then he told me, "My grace is enough; it's all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness." Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ's strength moving in on my weakness. Now I take limitations in stride, and with good cheer, these limitations that cut me down to size—abuse, accidents, opposition, bad breaks. I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become  2 Cor. 12:9-10 (Mes)   Weakness becomes opportunity and strength when we really rely on Christ's GRACE and not our own puny strength!   God's Peace   1) Is a result of God's GRACE.   “27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27, ESV)   No grace – no peace!   2) Will help me REMAIN faithful.   “7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7, ESV)   Without peace of mind and soul I won't be able to stay faithful to God or anyone else!   “33I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”” (John 16:33, ESV)   Jesus says we'll suffer in this life – BUT with His peace and presence we'll make it through!   3) Is a critical part of my SPIRITUAL LIFE.   “17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 14:17, ESV)   Peace is part of the foundation of the Kingdom of God – which means it's a vital part of our spiritual life!   4) Gives me the HOPE I need to live!   “13May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15:13, ESV)

“I beseech You therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1Paul says “I beseech you”, or more accurately “I plead with you”, or, I'm “Begging” you.Paul said “... to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.” The expression “living sacrifice” is set against the backdrop of the Old Testament sacrifices. While the Old Testament worshiper offered an animal, the New Testament worshiper is to offer himself or herself. Just as the people of Israel presented their animal sacrifices to the priests we are to hand over our bodies to God. We do this out of reverence to God for what he has done for us through his Son, Jesus Christ, we give ourselves to him. If we know the Lord, this is the only reasonable thing to do. Nothing else makes sense. This is our “reasonable act of service” to the God who saved us.“I beseech you, by the mercies of God” – what compels us to action?  What leads us to give of ourselves?  What lead us sacrifice?  It is the recognition, the acknowledgement that we have received God's mercy.  Our response is to say, yes to whatever God asks.We present our bodies, our lives to be holy and to please God…not in a way that is works for salvation, but as a result of our salvation.  We do not just present our work to God…you can work for God and not present yourself to God.The point here is not to present to God your bodies and not your mind or heart or spirit. He is going to say very clearly in verse two: “Be transformed in the renewal of your mind.” The point is to stress that your body counts. You belong to God soul and body, or you don't belong to him at all. Your body matters.Someone might think: Why would God be interested in my body? It's overweight, or underweight, wrinkled, blotchy, achy, diseased, impulsive, nervous, unattractive, lazy, awkward, disabled, near-sighted, hard-of-hearing, stiff, and brittle. What kind of sacrifice is that? The Old Testament demanded a flawless sheep. I don't measure up.That kind of thinking totally misses the point. The sacrifice of our bodies to God is not a sacrifice for sin. That is done already in the sacrifice of Christ.John Piper - Let every act of your body in living be an act of worship. That is, let every act of your living body be a demonstration that God is your treasure. Let every act of your living body show that Christ is more precious to you than anything else. Let every act of your living body be a death to all that dishonors Christ. This commitment is an act of our will. It isn't automatic. It's a decision that you must think about rationally and then make. No one else can do it for you. You may have grown up in a Christian home. Perhaps you trusted Christ as a child. But as you get older and begin making your own decisions, you have to decide to give your body, your possessions, and your entire life completely to God.It's asking a lot isn't it, but let's recognize this truth: Jesus is worthy of our sacrifice. He willingly laid down his life for us, and in response we give our lives to Him.Today's Challenge: Lord, here are my hands. Lord, here are my lips. Lord, here are my eyes. Lord, here are my ears. Lord, here are my feet. Lord, here are my thoughts. Lord, here is my voice. Here I am, Lord. All that I have, I now give to you. They sent Judas called [ch. 1:23] Barsabbas, and See 1 Pet. 5:12 Silas, leading men among ver. 1the brothers, 23with the following letter: [See ver. 22 above] “The brothers, both [See ver. 22 above] the apostles and the elders, to the brothers15:23 Or brothers and sisters; also verses 32, 33, 36 who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, ch. 23:26; James 1:1; [2 John 10, 11]greetings. 24Since we have heard that ver. 1; [Gal. 2:4; 5:12; Titus 1:10] some persons have gone out from us and Gal. 1:7; 5:10troubled you15:24 Some manuscripts some persons from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions, 25it has seemed good to us, having come See ch. 1:14 to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our [2 Pet. 3:15]beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26ch. 9:23-25; 14:19 men who have [ch. 20:24; 21:13; 2 Cor. 4:11; 1 John 3:16]risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27We have therefore sent ver. 22, 32Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. 28For it has seemed good [ver. 8; ch. 5:32; John 16:13; 1 Cor. 7:40] to the Holy Spirit and [ver. 19] to us [ver. 10; Rev. 2:24]to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: 29See ver. 20 that you abstain from ch. 21:25; 1 Cor. 8:1, 4, 7, 10; 10:19; Rev. 2:14, 20what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.” 30So when they were sent off, they went down to Antioch, and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. 31And when they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement. 32And Judas and Silas, who were themselves See ch. 13:1 prophets, encouraged and See ch. 14:22 strengthened ver. 1the brothers with many words. 33And after they had spent some time, they were sent off Gen. 26:29; Heb. 11:31; [1 Cor. 16:11] in peace by [See ver. 32 above]the brothers to those who had sent them.15:33 Some manuscripts insert verse 34: But it seemed good to Silas to remain there 35But ch. 13:1Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost Occasion: Proper 24 Sunday, October 18, 2020 Year (cycle): A   The Collect:  Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Old Testament:  Exodus 33:12-23 [Alternate: Isaiah 45:1-7] 12 Moses said to the Lord, ‘See, you have said to me, “Bring up this people”; but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, “I know you by name, and you have also found favour in my sight.” 13Now if I have found favour in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favour in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.' 14He said, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.' 15And he said to him, ‘If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from here. 16For how shall it be known that I have found favour in your sight, I and your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people, from every people on the face of the earth.' 17 The Lord said to Moses, ‘I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favour in my sight, and I know you by name.' 18Moses said, ‘Show me your glory, I pray.' 19And he said, ‘I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, “The Lord”; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20But', he said, ‘you cannot see my face; for no one shall see me and live.' 21And the Lord continued, ‘See, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock; 22and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; 23then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen.' Alternate: 1Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus,    whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him    and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him—    and the gates shall not be closed: 2 I will go before you    and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze    and cut through the bars of iron, 3 I will give you the treasures of darkness    and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord,    the God of Israel, who call you by your name. 4 For the sake of my servant Jacob,    and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name,    I surname you, though you do not know me. 5 I am the Lord, and there is no other;    besides me there is no god.    I arm you, though you do not know me, 6 so that they may know, from the rising of the sun    and from the west, that there is no one besides me;    I am the Lord, and there is no other. 7 I form light and create darkness,    I make weal and create woe;    I the Lord do all these things. Psalm:  Psalm 99 [Alternate: Psalm 96:1-9, (10-13)] 1 The Lord is King;   let the people tremble; *        he is enthroned upon the cherubim;        let the earth shake. 2 The Lord is great in Zion; *        he is high above all peoples. 3 Let them confess his Name, which is great and awesome; *        he is the Holy One. 4 "O mighty King, lover of justice,   you have established equity; *        you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob." 5 Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God   and fall down before his footstool; *        he is the Holy One. 6 Moses and Aaron among his priests,   and Samuel among those who call upon his Name, *        they called upon the Lord, and he answered them. 7 He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; *        they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them. 8 O Lord our God, you answered them indeed; *        you were a God who forgave them,        yet punished them for their evil deeds. 9 Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God   and worship him upon his holy hill; *        for the Lord our God is the Holy One. Alternate: 1 Sing to the Lord a new song; *        sing to the Lord, all the whole earth. 2 Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; *        proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations *        and his wonders among all peoples. 4 For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; *        he is more to be feared than all gods. 5 As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; *        but it is the Lord who made the heavens. 6 Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! *        Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary! 7 Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; *        ascribe to the Lord honor and power. 8 Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; *        bring offerings and come into his courts. 9 Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; *        let the whole earth tremble before him. 10 [Tell it out among the nations: "The Lord is King! *        he has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved;        he will judge the peoples with equity." 11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad;    let the sea thunder and all that is in it; *        let the field be joyful and all that is therein. 12 Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy    before the Lord when he comes, *        when he comes to judge the earth. 13 He will judge the world with righteousness *        and the peoples with his truth.] Epistle:  1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. 2 We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly 3remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labour of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you, 5because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of people we proved to be among you for your sake. 6And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, 7so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place where your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. 9For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, 10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming. Gospel:  Matthew 22:15-22 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. 16So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. 17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?' 18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, ‘Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me the coin used for the tax.' And they brought him a denarius. 20Then he said to them, ‘Whose head is this, and whose title?' 21They answered, ‘The emperor's.' Then he said to them, ‘Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's.' 22When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

Receive the Grace. 2 Cor 6:1Paul begs the readers of 2 Cor 6:1 to RECEIVE the GRACE. You certainly don't want to receive Judgment or true Justice. You can even do better than mercy, though that is pretty kind of God to offer that too.You can receive GRACE. Getting MORE THAN YOU DESERVE. How do I sign up for that? Receive it. Believe it. Agree with God about the nasty business of sin and necessary reconciliation. As we mentioned yesterday, when? Well, how bout today? There is no plan b. Without this grace, it is only judgment. Here is how if the jews of Matt 10 did not receive their message were going to be worse off than Sodom on the day of judgment. Yikes. I like Grace better. You should too. Listen and today RECEIVE.

Fourth Sunday of Advent Sunday, December 22, 2019 Year (cycle): A   The Collect: Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament:  Isaiah 7:10-16 10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, 11Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. 12But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. 13Then Isaiah said: ‘Hear then, O house of David! Epistle:  Romans 1:1-7 1Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, 3the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, 6including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all God's beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Gospel:  Matthew 1:18-25 18 Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.' 22All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 ‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,    and they shall name him Emmanuel', which means, ‘God is with us.' 24When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

Sermon Notes; Persevere Today is the final service in 2019. The next time we meet will be 2020. At this time of year we evaluate what the previous year brought and what the next year will bring. Many of you have had times of lose during 2019. Marriages have broken. Family and friends have passed from this life into the next. Some have had positive changes in your life. New Friendships have developed. New positions at current employer or even complete changes of position and employer have occurred. Regardless of weather 2019 has been a year highlighted by positive events or a year remembered for heartache, we, you , I have had to persevere. The key word that i keep hearing over and over again persevere. Press on.A: Interestingly i found that the English word persevere is not found one time in the King James Bible. Perseverance is only found one time, in Ephesians 6:18 "With all prayer at all time in the Spirit with this view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints."B: The verb means to continue steadfastly in a thing and give unremitting care to it. Etymologically it means to be intensely strong toward. In Romans 13:6 it is used of rulers in the discharge of their functions.C: When I looked up "Steadfast" I found three different adjectives and two separate nouns that express that idea.BebaiosHedraiosStereosStereomaSterigmosD: The idea of the persevere or to be steadfast is clearly a Biblical principle. Yet one can not simply ignore the elephant in the room. There is a problem.Paul referred to himself as the prisoner Jesus Christ in Eph 3:1 and the prisoner of the Lord in Eph. 4:1Paul who is a example of perseverance and being steadfast recognized the problem. The Fifth Seal Revelation 6:9-11 Even the Mytre ar told to rest a little longer until the number would be completed of their fellow slaves and their brothers, who were going to be killed just as they had been.Taking the mark of the beast demands the perseverance of the saints, who keep God's commands and their faith in Jesus. Rev 14:12E Perspective: Christ will build His churchThat is a promiseLook at how it is and will be fulfilled in FBCNotice promise is that Christ will build His church, no promise that He will build this church. Thus we need to concentrate on building His church not this church. Christ is building His church through this church.F: Prevail Mathew 16When we are part of building His church, not this church, then the gates of hell will not prevail. As a church when we lose members it hurts, that is looking at the problem in the face. But the perspective that we are building His church means we prevail. We Persever. We are steadfast. Here is how going into 2020 FBC is going to prevail and persevere while looking at problems squarely in the face. The Dragon thrown out of heaven Revelations 12:7-13All those who live on the earth will worship the beast, everyone whose name was not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the lamb who was slaughtered. If anyone has an ear, he should listen. If anyone is destined for captivity, into captivity he goes.If anyone is to be killed with a sword, with a sword he will be killed. This demands the perseverance and faith of the saints. Revelations 13:8-10G: Persevere like the seven churches of RevelationH: Maltble Babcock 1858-1901As we close out 2019 and enter 2020 do not grow weary in well doing. If 2019 has been a discouraging year in your personal life or you are discouraged in your church life, be steadfast, unmovable for James 1:12 reads "Blessed is the person who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."

But I am prouder — infinitely prouder — to be a father.A soldier destroys in order to build; the father only builds, never destroys. 1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9 And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. 11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

Philippians 1:1Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons... Have you ever thought about the roles and positions in the church where you attend? Are they what the New Testament describes? In the New Testament church, there were primarily three roles. You read about them in Philippians chapter one in Philippians chapter one verse one, Paul and Timothy are called bondservants of Jesus Christ and they're writing to the church and here are the three positions they described to all the saints in Christ Jesus, the common Christians, those called out of the world and into the Gospel, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi with the overseers and deacons. These servants of God serve in the position of overseers and special servants or deacons. These are the roles that the New Testament Church had. Are those the roles that your church has?

Romans 1 1Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) 3Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: 5By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: 6Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: 7To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. 9For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; 10Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.
