For Ep 44, my guest is Max Joles.Max is the head of dev for 8020 agency in the states and also writes a newsletter about his hometown of Maine called the 'Maine Outsider' - a roundup of local outdoor events. He also set up 'Made by Adventur'e - a company to highlight travel as a force for good. I hadn't met Max before this interview, but from scrolling through his social media and website, there are obvious things about his life: his love of problem solving and the great outdoors. I think people that are both good at working through analytical problems but also have love the freedom and wilderness of nature are particularly potent because they can both zoom in on problems but also zoom out to have a wider perspective.Today, we'll dig in to Max's failures:Forgetting he has a bodyAssuming responsibilityTaking himself too seriouslyCONNECT WITH MAX
Brent Beshore is the founder and CEO of Adventur.es, an investment firm that buys small family-owned businesses with the intention of holding them indefinitely. After launching a few businesses out of college, Brent developed a distinct investment strategy and style. Earlier this year, he raised outside capital for the first time in a permanent capital vehicle, and I am a happy investor in the fund. Brent regularly shares his insights on business and investing through his widely distributed letters on his website and commentary on Twitter. And just last week, he released his first book, The Messy Marketplace: Selling Your Business in a World of Imperfect Buyers. It's a fantastic instructional guide that covers everything from emotional expectations to the fine print in documentation. Our conversation covers Brent's childhood interest in business, early mistakes, structural differences in his strategy from traditional private equity, search funds and fundless sponsors, sourcing deals, conducting due diligence, understanding valuation, negotiating, raising a first-time permanent capital vehicle, entering the ranks of professionals, and his new book. Brent is unusually insightful about investing in general and deeply knowledgeable about the niche he occupies. In this week's podcast I'm wrapping up Season 5 - I usually launch about 25 episodes per season, and this is the last of the episodes this season. It's a good time to reflect on the latest adventures of the family. We just returned from our annual trip to the Northwest, into Wyoming and Montana, visiting the National Parks, National Forests and Grasslands, and Bureau of Land Management areas. There are so many things to consider when making a cross-country trip like this, for 3 weeks. Not only to pack up yourself, but everyone in your suburban - the FIVE boys in my life. And a few years in a row we even took our DOGS!I'll share some of the reasons why, as parents, we do what we do. The messages that we teach and preach to our kids, not knowing if they are listening or if it's sticking. Then one day, out of the blue, one of the boys will recall a memory that did not mean so much to me, but he can recall it detail by detail. When asked why it meant so much to him, Luke's reply was that he played in the snow with his brothers, or had a pinecone fight with his brothers, or a long picnic lunch playing on a downed tree with his brothers. The common theme? Brothers.Obviously, memories were being made right under my nose, and details of these picnics, road trips, and camping nights stuck. So did the safety messages we taught them over the years. It showed when the boys would return to school in the fall. When they were younger, they would have to journal during class time. Every year, at the end of the school year, I would collect their notebooks and flip through them. Every single story, article, poem, drawing, and recollection was about our family vacations and adventures. Then came the years we brought the dogs...Our lives never slowed down when we had the kids - we just learned how to include them, adapt our adventures and overcome some obstacles along the way! I'm so glad we did!Enjoy!!

In this episode, I interview Jeff Lopes, an entrepreneur that has started numerous companies including his first when he was 17 years old. After 2 profitable business ventures before his 21st birthday Jeff started Kimurawear, a martial arts and boxing equipment company.Jeff started Kimurawear out of his garage and was initially an apparel brand that sponsored 26 UFC athletes. After the mixed martial arts boom around the world there were multiple large brands that move into the space and could afford to pay the athletes more. So, Jeff pivoted and started manufacturing martial arts and boxing equipment at premium prices. But, once again Jeff noticed another need and pivoted to making affordable entry level fighting equipment as well as the premium line. Jeff still runs Kimurawear and has grown it to a multi-million dollar brand that has sold over a quarter million pairs of boxing gloves. Jeff breaks down the story of how he started and grew this incredible brand from his garage to over 1800 gyms in this episode.https://www.kimurawear.com/Mr. Lopes is also a family man and when his son was born he realized that he needed more passive income in his life. Kimurawear was great money, but he had to work long hours away from his family. So, he started researching and decided on getting into vacation rental properties. He started True Blue Homes and bought a condo in northern Canada that he renovated and rented out. He saved his earnings has rolled them into many more vacation rentals in the same area. Jeff has a clear vision for his real estate holdings and is in the process of opening up a full multiple cabin resort in the same area as his current properties. He explains his motivations behind investing in real estate and why he recommends people get into it in this episode.Jeff was incredibly productive when COVID-19 hit last year and we go into all he got done in this episode. But, one big thing he did was start a podcast called: 'Jeff Knows Inc. Show'. Over the last 10 months he has had some huge guests on and has nearly 500,000 downloads. You can check out his show at the link below.Jeff Knows Inc Show LinkThe one thing that Jeff holds above his businesses is his family. He is a devout father that shows his commitment through his actions. When he is making his schedule he first blocks off his time for his family and then he can plug in all of his other engagements. He also has a 3-7 rule where as soon as the clock strikes 3, he is done working and he heads home to spend time with the family. Jeff also makes sure that if either of his kids are afraid of anything, the whole family goes out and does that thing to get over the fear. His commitment to being a great husband and father is extremely admirable and he dives into how he accomplishes this in this episode.Jeff's higher purpose is being a dad entrepreneur and coaching other dad entrepreneur's in how to be an effective businessman, while also giving 100% to your family. He has a coaching program releasing soon called "Man's Purpose" and you can learn more at the link below.https://www.jeffreylopes.com/mans-purpose If you want to learn more about Jeff Lopes the links to Jeff's social media and personal website are below.https://www.instagram.com/jefflopes/https://jeff-lopes.mykajabi.com/Please subscribe if you enjoyed the episode and want to hear from more exciting, successful entrepreneurs!Podcast Site: www.adventuresofanentrepreneur.coPodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Adventur

In an age of speed, overstimulation and FOMO, it’s easy to get caught up in the latest tech trend. This mindset doesn’t discriminate and is often most pervasive amongst the most sophisticated people in the world. Over the past year, I’ve had a number of conversations with Fund LPs and often I hear comments like “What crypto investments should we make?”, “When will VR take off?” and my favorite “Did this fund invest in a scooter company yet?” It would be naive to write off any of those sectors and think that massive value won’t be created by the winners in those spaces. What I find most interesting though is how little airtime we give to the massive sector of value creation that lives and breathes on the complete opposite side of the spectrum. These are not the businesses that will 10,000x their value in 5 years, but they are ones that print material and consistent cash flow over outsized periods of time. Or as our guest in this episode likes to call them: “boring businesses.” Brent Beshore is the Founder and CEO of adventur.es, a extremely unique PE firm in Columbia, Missouri. Brent has raised $50M of capital for his fund and partners with entrepreneurs with the intention to never sell his ownership stake. We chatted at length about boring businesses, evaluating fads vs. trends and some of his biggest philosophical learnings from looking under the hood at over 12,000 companies. It was a pleasure to have Brent on the show. He’s undoubtedly a sharp investor, but he has a refreshing amount of empathy which I appreciate the most.

One of the things that Dan and Ian love about creating this podcast is that they not only get to talk to some pretty interesting people, but they also get to follow their stories as they build and scale their businesses. About two years ago, we spoke with Brent Beshore, the Founder and CEO of Adventur.es. Since we last talked, Brent's team has more or less doubled. They've made a decision to raise capital, bought a headquarters in Columbia, Missouri and Brent has written a book about buying businesses called "The Messy Marketplace". On today's episode, we are revisiting Brent's story and hearing how Adventur.es has grown since we last spoke. We'll also hear how things have changed since they have raised over 50 million dollars in investment capital, and why he decided to share the story of his business in his new book.

It’s a fantastic instructional guide that covers everything from emotional expectations to the fine print in documentation. Our conversation covers Brent’s childhood interest in business, early mistakes, structural differences in his strategy from traditional private equity, search funds and fundless sponsors, sourcing deals, conducting due diligence, understanding valuation, negotiating, raising a first-time permanent capital vehicle, entering the ranks of professionals, and his new book. Brent is unusually insightful about investing in general and deeply knowledgeable about the niche he occupies. Today on The Alternative Investor we have our first guest on the show: Brent Beshore! Brent is the CEO and founder of Adventur.es — a private equity firm in Columbia, Missouri. Adventur.es has a unique investment approach: they seek boring businesses. They explain this perfectly themselves: “Boring businesses endure because they consistently solve a meaningful problem and were patiently built over decades,” “Truth be told, our responsibility is not just to seek and sustain boring businesses, but to be boring ourselves. Boring is reliable, faithful, and predictable. Boring is sustainable. We are committed to doing what we say we would, when we said we'd do it.”This episode, Brent, Brad, and I discuss the workings of Brent's firm, how they go about securing deals, their due diligence process, what deals they look for, and how he deals with a variety of situations within the firm. The Tropical MBA Podcast - Entrepreneurship, Travel, and Lifestyle
http://www.tropicalmba.com/brentbeshore/ The toughest nut for Dan and Ian to crack over the last few years has been how to make money with your money. How do you successfully invest in small businesses without having to run them on a day-to-day basis? Today's guest has cracked that code. Brent Beshore is the founder and CEO of Adventur.es. Brent has managed to do something that our hosts have dreamed of doing for a long time. He owns a portfolio of different businesses, and he does little to no work in operating them. On this episode, Brent will share how he has built this portfolio and what things he looks for when deciding to purchase a business.
No matter how much we know or how much we try there will still always be a gap between us and our dogs. We just can’t completely communicate with them because we are two very different species. Unfortunately this can hold us back from being able to help them through some of their issues. Lucky for us there are some furry helpers available to us that can come to the rescue that can help dogs having some difficulty feel more confident but also make huge impacts in improving the situation. There’s just no one better to communicate and aid a dog like another dog. Dogs are social animals and thrive when they are with others of their own kind. In this episode I’ll go over how other dogs can help your dog through some behavioral issues. In this episode 1:45  A holiday gift idea 3:58  Why dogs can help other dogs 4:59  What are some issues that dogs can help with 6:24  How to use dogs to help 11:35 Case study #1: The scared Pit Bull puppy 15:31  What kinds of dogs are the best helpers 17:26  Case study #2: The dog who feared stairs and doorways Here’s a quick video of Sandy going up stairs, which was not possible before Ziggy came to the rescue This episode is sponsored by 4Knines: high quality car seat and cargo covers for your vehicle. www.4knines.com GDA SPECIAL: use this coupon code at checkout and get 10% OFF your purchase: ADVENTUR
No one wants to think about the possibility of their furry best pal running away or getting lost, however it can happen – and it can happen to anyone. It doesn’t matter how good your dog is or how careful you are accidents happen and dogs can sometimes wander. If that happens to you, it’s best to be prepared and know what steps you need to take to find your dog as quickly as possible. In the moment you’ll be panicked and probably won’t be thinking too clearly so it will be good to know ahead of time what your plan is. I’ve invited on a Maresa Fanelli from PetFBI.org to inform us of what to do in case the we ever get separated from our dogs. In this episode we’ve got another fun edition of my favorite things for you and your dog. This time we’re talking about what collars, leashes and harnesses I use and recommend. The big problem between dogs and people is that we are speaking two very different languages and neither of us is really understanding the other. As humans, we rely on verbal methods of communication, whereas our canine companions are non verbal. So we both keep talking but very little of our messages are being received as intended. Now I know your dog is smart and can make many word associations, however he’ll never learn the language of English. So it’s up to us to bridge the gap and learn how to speak in our dog’s language. The good news is that it’s not the hard if you learn how. And that’s what I’ll be teaching you right here. As football season begins once again, I can’t help but think about Michael Vick and what happened to those poor dogs in his dog fighting ring. If your dog gets grumpy when people or other dogs approach you, either at home or on leash, there’s a chance you have a relationship issue. Your dog could be claiming you as their resource and protecting his or her valuables. This is something that is often enabled by us but can have serious implications – especially if children are involved. This week I’ll go over what the symptoms look like and give you a plan to change things so your dog doesn’t see you as a possession so that he behaves himself when people interact with you.
