Send us a MessageIn this Culture Byte solo episode, Sue discusses the all-to-common phenomenon described as “flavor-of-the-month” which are, in essence, failed change initiatives. She acknowledges that humans are resistant to change, even when they recognize the benefits. Sue explains the concept of diffusion and the need for a majority of employees to adopt the new way before it has staying power. She emphasizes the simplicity, yet importance, of ongoing reminders and recognition to support the adoption of change.Organizations that have a history of 'flavor of the month' initiatives struggle to sustain changes.Diffusion is the process of reaching a critical mass of employees adopting the new way, and it takes time and ongoing effort.Regular reminders and recognition are important tactics to support the adoption of change.Capstone Leadership Solutions has developed a framework for positive change in organizations, which includes addressing common barriers to change.Over the duration of the 10-week Capstone Leadership Bundle Academy, participants will be guided through a “learn-do”experience designed to support the adoption of a consistent cadence of purposeful and impactfulactions anchored in nine core leadership practices that move people higher and progress forward. The next Academy offering is Sept 16-Nov 22.Academy details and registration information

Data Futurology - Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence From Industry Leaders
This week's guest on the Data Futurology podcast is a 30-year veteran of technology, across many different segments and roles. Nastaran Bisheban, now CTO of KFC in Canada, has previously held roles at Rakuten Kobo, Canadian Tire, and RIM. She additionally sits on the Board of Directors for the CIO Association of Canada. One of the biggest changes that have occurred over the course of Nastaran's career is the deeper integration of technology roles into the broader business. As she explains in the interview, Nastaran completed an MBA at Harvard Business School because her role has become an even 50/50 split between managing technology and interacting strategically with the rest of the C-suite and groups within the business. Having that broader understanding of business has been enormously valuable to her career. Beyond that, Felipe and Nastaran discuss the role that AI and machine learning is playing in KFC Canada's operation, how executives are encouraged to spend time “on the floor” in restaurants to learn the day-to-day challenges in operation, and how the company is looking to align its business strategy and data practice to drive growth across the operation. Ultimately, as Nastaran stressed, technology is there to support the human element of the company. Technology that is used to help identify blind spots or notice trends that can be addressed, is an example of technology that has been deployed effectively. For instance, KFC Canada recently completed a significant transformation project to allow for all the delivery and ordering apps to integrate into its systems. It was Nastaran and her team's human-centric approach to the application of that technology that allowed the project to succeed. Enjoy this in-depth and insightful podcast! “If you have self-organizing teams, your power as a leader is determined by your ability to enable others to grow and take responsibility." Ron Eringa is a leadership developer and the co-author of “The Professional Agile Leader”. In this episode, we discussed insights from his book on how one can become a professional agile leader. Ron started by sharing his view of why agile transformations usually fail and gave advice on how companies should adopt agile in a more effective way. Ron then described characteristics of a professional agile leader, including how to apply situational leadership by understanding the 4 different leadership styles (combative, compliant, competitive, catalytic). Ron also explained how leaders can build high-performing teams by being aware of the two domains (visible & invisible) the teams are operating in and by understanding the interconnection between structure and culture. Towards the end, Ron shared his utopia view of how organizations would look like if they already become fully agile and also shared some patterns for effective leadership. The Great Product Owner: The PO that knew how to nurture an Agile culture in the team This Product Owner had a clear willingness to learn, and to accept a new role that was new to them. Through that, the PO was able to help build an agile culture, a culture of “being agile” instead of “doing agile”. In this episode, we hear how a team is an ecosystem and has its own culture that needs to be nurtured by the Scrum Master, and the Product Owner. The Bad Product Owner: When the PO's lose focus on value, a PO anti-pattern This PO was not able to focus on the value the team was helping to create. When this anti-pattern happens, then the team ends up being focused on “just doing the work”, and is not able to bring their technology perspective into the creation of a clear value, or impact on the user. This week, Dan Neumann is joined by Buyi Kalala in today's episode to explore the differences between Agile Missionaries and Agile Mercenaries, considering a missionary someone who is there to help and assist the team on its journey, and a mercenary, who is paid to “hit,” who can reinforce misconceptions, and even execute tasks that are not coherent with the Agile Values and Principles. Key Takeaways Agile Missionaries vs. Agile Mercenaries. Assist the organization in knowing what they don't know, leading them into a new direction, a new way of operating. Sometimes organizations put all the responsibility on the Agile Coach when in fact it is their transformation, not the Coaches. The reaction to change. Planting the seed takes time, organizations need time to process and digest change. Sometimes there is resistance to change and in other cases, there is change fatigue. Sustainable change comes after a time-consuming process. Well-taken decisions will be celebrated while poor actions will also be exposed. Mistakes in the Agile Journey are opportunities to pivot. Sometimes it is easier to identify the “wrongful” behaviors rather than having the ability to catch the right decisions to be able to encourage them. Focusing on potentials and possibilities is the way to highlight the behaviors that are aligned with the Agile Culture. One-on-one conversations are crucially important. Introverts can have a hard time dealing with the face-to-face approach. Showing interest in the other person is necessary to achieve a common goal and be successful together. Think outside of the box and try to connect from the other person's perspective. Practice patience and be curious (instead of judgemental). Want to Learn More or Get in Touch? As menders working with legacy code, we are focused on identifying and reducing technical debt. But how much easier this task would be if the creator of the code or the previous maintainer left us some breadcrumbs to follow? A simple note on the rationale for a particular decision they have made or a warning about interconnected lines of code would take us a long way! Today we talk with Andrea Goulet, co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Corgibytes. Her empathy-driven approach to software development earned her recognition as one of the Top Ten Professionals in Software Under 35 by LinkedIn. She tells us about this lack of communication in software development, the phenomenon she calls the communication debt, and how its reduction can make the software more robust and its maintenance more efficient. The pair is out to experiment and lead in ways never before seen. “Yes, we’re going to make some mistakes but by God we don’t want to make brand new mistakes; we want to make mistakes that no one else have ever made before, because we had the courage to try.” Howard shares his perspective of the future for the Scrum Gathering, including the many global events they are sponsoring. Accenture | SolutionsIQ’s Roxi Ozolins reprises her role as host on this special episode, after recording “Building an Agile Culture” with Sublett at the beginning of his tenure at the Scrum Alliance. SPaMCAST 483 will feature our essay on measuring the value delivered by agile. The essay begins: “Organizations and teams come to agile—for that matter, any concept, framework or technique—for a wide variety of reasons. Even if we are just the keeping up with the neighbors, we need feedback to know if we have met our goal. We need feedback because—to quote Paul Gibbons, author of The Science of Successful Organizational Change (Re-read Saturday)—“we confuse what we think ought to work” with what does work (quote from SPaMCAST 480).” Four Agile Value Entries: Does Agile Deliver Measurable Value? Measuring the Value of Agile Does Agile Deliver Value? You Can Prove it! Measuring The Impact of Change: An Example Our second column features Steve Tendon who brings his Tame The Flow: Hyper-Productive Knowledge-Work Performance, The TameFlow Approach and Its Application to Scrum and Kanban (buy a copy here) to the cast. Today we complete our discussion of Chapter 21. We have spent extra time on chapters 20 and 21 to get to the heart of the important concepts in these chapters. In our final column, Jon M Quigley brings his Alpha and Omega of Product Development column to the cast. In this segment, we discuss Agile Culture. Agile is often crippled when organizations don’t spend the time and effort needed to adopt a culture and mindset that incents innovation and productivity.
