In August 2002, Michael Short, his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Jennifer, lived in a red brick ranch-style home right off Hwy 220 in Oak Level, Virginia. Michael owned a business named M.S. Mobile Home Movers, employing various people, most of whom were temporary or transient. The company was not doing well, so Michael decided to put their house up for sale and move into a mobile home until he could figure out his next move. He had even made a trip to the coast of North Carolina to see if he could find work there. On the evening of Wednesday, August 14, 2002, the family's plans were up in the air. They may or may not sell the business, and they may or may not move to North Carolina. On that night, they had every reason to believe that whatever came their way, they'd do it together as a family.Unfortunately, Michael and Mary would be found shot execution-style the following day, and 9-year-old Jennifer was nowhere to be found. After an exhaustive search, Jennifer's remains were found 41 days after her parents were found murdered. Now, 21 years later, police are no closer to finding their killer. Join Jen and Cam as they discuss The Brown Family Murders. If you have any information, no matter how small, please call one of the following numbers and report it. In this episode we chat with Michael Short, one half of the social media sketch comedy duo The Terribly Irresponsible. Michael opens about his journey down the treacherous path of prescription medicine addiction, in his own words anything with an opioid he was all over like a rash. His addiction progressed to higher quantities more frequently as he built more tolerance to the pain killers, where his whole body felt like it was immersed in a bubble bath. Michael was highly driven and motivated by the power of his addiction to seek out fulfilling his cravings in any possible way, from doctor shopping leading to being blacklisted and banned from most doctors practices, to manipulating and pulling on the heart strings of those around them to supplying his next fix. After several overdoses and some trouble with the police, Michael decided he had to make a change before he ended up in jail or dead, but was so far down the rabbit hole of addiction he needed to seek professional help and assistance in a rehab clinic to come off the pain killers, but unfortunately he was prescribed Benzodiazepine and thus led him down another chapter of addiction, taking high levels of Valium and then Xanax. Michael shares his mental health struggles, experiencing bad episodes of anxiety, depression and panic attacks, he relied on the drugs to mask the episodes he didn't want to feel, until the drugs stopped working and the anxiety got more overwhelming lead him to quit cold turkey and suffer and struggle a long 9 month process of withdrawal where he thought he wouldn't make it out alive. Michael's story is an emotional one, confronting his past mistakes learning who he is without the drugs and wanting to make up for it through positive outlets and finding passion in creating gags on social media. We thank Michael for sharing his story, and commend his courage to be so open about his turbulent past. Thank you Zekr Skin for sponsoring this video. They need partners who vouch for their integrity in rooms they can't get into otherwise. Just to be clear, masterminds are more than just simple referral networks. They provide access to points of view that can speed up your decision-making processes. They can open doors to new opportunity spaces and give you the strength to abandon those that no longer meet your needs. Especially the ones that you nurtured so diligently in the past.

When Chris Thompson approached his employer's home around 9 am on the morning of August 15th, 2002 in the small town of Oak Level, Virginia, he expected his boss to step out of the home, ready to go with Chris to pick up the new business truck. What Chris discovered, instead, was that his boss, Michael Short, had been shot, seemingly as he slept on the couch in his garage. When police arrived at the scene, they found Michael's wife, Mary, in the couple's bed, had also been shot. The couple's nine-year-old daughter, Jennifer, was missing.A search commenced for the missing child, an Amber Alert was created, and news stations flashed her picture-- all hoping that she would be found alive and well. As weeks passed, police explored various leads from a stalker, to a stranger, to a disgruntled customer, and even explored theories spawned by the rumor mill in hopes of solving the crime and bringing Jennifer safely home. Unfortunately, on September 25th, 2002, thirty miles away in Rockingham County, North Carolina, fragments of human remains were discovered that later were verified to be those of young Jennifer. She too had been shot.Who could have committed such a heinous crime and what was their motive, especially since money (around $600) remained on the kitchen counter inside the Short family home untouched? Will those who have information, as local law enforcement has indicated that they do, finally be willing to share the details they recall that could lead to justice? And will YOU share about this case and help push for answers and closure?BLENDJET 2: Go to blendjet.com and use code coffeeandcases12 to save 12% off your order OR use my special link and the discount will be applied at checkout: zen.ai/coffeeandcases12ZENCASTR: Use my special link zen.ai/coffeeandcases and use code coffeeandcases to save 30% off your first three months of Zencastr professional. #madeonzencastrOr, consider supporting the pod in other ways, like Patreon! He founded a company called Pipeline Sales Optimization to help businesses and entrepreneurs automate their sales processes. At 45 years of age, Michael encourages people to think about what kind of lifestyle they want to live and then design a business or job around that so they don't have to wait until they're in their 50s or 60s to start enjoying a life of adventure.

Michael Short talks to me about how the "attic" comedy tapes he made with his brother Marty led to him being hired on SCTV; joining the show in series 3; writing the Earl and Floyd segments; Stretch Your Arm; getting hired by John Candy to write on Big City Comedy the Monday after SCTV wrapped; Margaret Trudeau; returning to SCTV for the second US cycle; pitching Great White North Palace and winning the Emmy; playing Mike the Bartender on the Cinemax season; the anonymity of working for SCTV; Jim Carrey almost joins the Cinemax cast; working with Jonathan Winters; Speed Zones; Dave Thomas Show; how working for the former Christian Broadcast Company (then Family Channel) let some things by on Maniac Mansion; NBC executives ruin the Martin Short Show; the evolution of Jiminy Glick; working with Jan Hooks; having to make sure he was fired from the Bonnie Hunt Show; casting Bonnie for an unaired Dave Thomas pilot; working on Mad TV with Artie Lange; being too edgy for Wayne Brady; pitching "Pimp My Outhouse" for Blue Collar TV; reality TV; being the first writer hired for Schitt's Creek and being (with Dan Levy) the only one who was there for the whole series; winning the Emmy for best comedy, but COVID keeping him away --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Today we're going to talk about resilience. We as people, as businesses, as societies, and as countries have demonstrated a great deal of resilience over the last 22 months, even when it felt like we were up schitt's creek… we managed to continue to move forward, together. As CEO of MakeShift, a web and mobile cloud-based employee scheduling app, I have witnessed this firsthand. I am incredibly proud of how the MakeShift team stepped up to help businesses like Alberta Health Services, La Senza, Best Western, Air France, and many more improve their employee scheduling experience during the pandemic to help our essential workers on the frontlines. I am a big believer in the idea that companies that give their employees the flexibility to work schedules that fit their lives improve employee morale and make work fun. But, how else can we make work more fun? As businesses face a massive labour shortage and a worsening war for talent, how do businesses create a culture that improves recruitment and retention and can stand up to these new challenges? My last guest, retired Navy Seal Commander and best-selling author of the Attributes, Rich Diviney, gave me the answer I was looking for. Do you know how the Navy Seals bond and build an everlasting culture of trust and camaraderie? They do it with humour. Yes, the Navy Seals get through some of the toughest challenges anyone could ever face with a dash of humour. Now, humour in the workplace is tricky. And anyone that knows me, knows I am no expert. So, I decided to find someone who is… Today, I am incredibly excited to welcome Emmy Award-winning writer and producer of the very popular Canadian show Schitt's Creek, Michael Short on my podcast. So a couple of years ago the concept of WaaS (website as a service) started up, and we covered it quite a bit, we talked about WP Ultimo and did some live demos as well. The concept is simple, you create some templates for websites, most likely in a niche that you've identified, and you put them up for sale. People can come to your WaaS and they can get a site spun up that they can start using right away. Micheal Short saw this and decided that he could extend this, and so WaaS Pro was born. Micheal talks on the podcast about how his solution can greatly inprove your WaaS offering...

It’s a safe bet that Professor Michael Short’s 22.01 Introduction to Nuclear Engineering and Ionizing Radiation is the only course at MIT where students are encouraged to bring their toenail clippings to class. In this episode, Professor Short discusses one of the core principles of his teaching philosophy: the importance of making abstract concepts tangible by means of hands-on activities. Want to know how much gold or arsenic is in your body? Bombard the aforementioned toenail clippings with neutrons in a reactor and see what gamma rays they give off! Want to know whether the stone in your ring is a genuine diamond or just a cubic zirconia? Put it under the electron microscope! Professor Short also emphasizes the value of opening “knowledge gaps”—awakening his students’ curiosity by focusing on interesting questions they don’t yet know the answer to. Later, Professor Short describes how he designed the course with a built-in mechanism for collecting real-time feedback so that he can respond immediately to students’ concerns. As a bonus, near the end of the podcast, Professor Short answers various nuclear science questions posed by actual OpenCourseWare users. Michael Short of WaaS-Pro has built a business around websites as a service, meaning quick websites for business professionals very similar to our own AIR: Website Platform, but Michael has taken that a step further.Michael started building pieces of software that helped expand his site's capabilities and has since turned that into a business. One of the ways he was able to do this was by focusing on the needs of his own business rather than attempting to fill a void in the marketplace. And as it turns out, others needed these services as well, including yours truly. So I got a chance to sit down with Michael, talk shop so to speak, understand where he came from, what he's doing now and figuring out where WaaS-Pro goes from here.

This Week in Crypto - Bitcoin, Ethereum, Blockchain, and Cryptocurrency News
This is your daily roundup for Saturday, September 28, 2019. The NBA disallows tokenization of contracts, Harbor receives a broker-dealer license, and LedgerX claims unfair treatment by ex-CFTC Chair Giancarlo. ☕ Buy Me A Coffee: https://glow.fm/mota NBA Disallows Tokenization Of Contracts The NBA says Nets basketball player Spencer Dinwiddie can’t sell shares in his contract for a security token offering as it violates the league’s collective bargaining agreement. The league said the arrangement is prohibited by the C.B.A., which rules that ‘no player shall assign or otherwise transfer to any third party his right to receive compensation from the team under his uniform player contract. Dinwiddie planned to tokenize part of his contract on the ethereum blockchain, in order to raise $13.5 million from his three-year, $35 million contract. The token would allow Dinwiddie to raise part of his salary up front and token holders would receive his regular salary payments, recouping their investments and earning interest. Paxos Trust Company was set to provide custody and escrow services for the project, paying investors out in the Paxos Standard stablecoin. Dinwiddie also revealed that he had partnered with Tron Foundation’s Justin Sun to donate 8.2 bitcoin to charity by selling his game-worn shoes for the 2019/2020 season. Harbor Receives Broker-Dealer License Harbor Square Investments, a subsidiary of tokenized securities platform Harbor, has received a broker-dealer license from FINRA. Broker-dealers can buy and sell securities on their own and on their clients’ behalves. In crypto, a broker-dealer who treats digital assets as securities could market them to institutional investors, but face strict requirements from the SEC and FINRA. Harbor adopted a conservative mindset more closely associated with Wall Street banks to overcome regulators’ concerns. Harbor’s compliance officers prepared a 500-page Written Supervisory Procedure document for the SEC, outlining countless processes, from on-boarding new hires to documenting instant messages. Harbor plans to become a “one-stop shop” for digital asset issuers, including managing fundraising, managing investors, tokenizing, and enabling liquidity. LedgerX Claims Unfair Treatment By Ex-CFTC Chair LedgerX believes former CFTC Chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo was personally biased against the company, and improperly used his position to delay the approval of an amended Derivatives Clearing Organization registration. LedgerX claims that the ex-chair was animus towards a blog post written by LedgerX CEO Paul Chou. The blog post, written in 2018, implied that preferential treatment was being given to larger companies so former chair Giancarlo could cement his legacy. The blog referred to the approval of Bakkt, which was running into issues at the time. According to documents obtained by CoinDesk, former Chair Giancarlo threatened the company by calling a LedgerX board member and telling him that he was going to make sure the Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO) registration order would be revoked. According to the allegation, a CFTC staffer tried to tamper with a LedgerX’s audit. LedgerX CEO Paul Chou stated “We had conversations with division level heads that discussed how much of a mess this was and that one of them told me that he felt like ‘a guard in a concentration camp, just following orders from the top.’ These orders were completely divorced from the regulatory framework designed to impartially judge an application’s merit and good standing, and in our view, was based entirely on a personal animus between [Giancarlo] and me because of my blog post.” Under federal law, the CFTC has 180 days to approve or deny an application, but LedgerX has noted that its DCO amendment application has been outstanding for more than 250 days. LedgerX CEO Paul Chou was let go from the CFTC’s Technology Advisory Committee this Friday. CFTC spokesperson Michael Short stated “Paul’s erratic and unprofessional behavior had the potential to distract from the important issues under consideration by the committee”
August 15, 2002. Bassett, Virginia. 50-year old Michael Short and his 36-year old wife, Mary, are found shot to death inside their home, but the couple's nine-year old daughter, Jennifer, is missing. Over one month later, Jennifer's remains are discovered over 30 miles away in a rural area of North Carolina and it turns out she has been shot to death as well. The investigation turns up some promising leads, including a person of interest named Garrison Bowman, as well as an eyewitness sighting of an unidentified man who was seen parked across the street from the Short residence in a truck on the morning of the murders. However, these leads fail to bring about a resolution and no one can figure out a motive for this crime. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the truly horrific and baffling unsolved murders of an entire family. Special thanks to listener Jackie Elliott for providing the opening narration for this episode. On August 15th, 2002, Michael and Mary Short were found executed inside their Virginia home. There 9-year-old daughter, Jennifer, was missing. A massive search was started for Jennifer and investigators began to try to find out who killed Michael and Mary. The investigation would include the murder of Jennifer after her body was found 50 miles from her home. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss this tragic unsolved case. Friends, family, and neighbors couldn't think of anyone who would want to harm this all-american family. We'll discuss the details of the crime along with theories and persons of interest. Were these murders committed by someone connected with Michael Short's business? If so, why was Jennifer taken and left so far away from the crime scene? For our June podcasting meetup, we had a chat with Michael Short of Let's Go Outdoors about how to make a living in new media. I don't think it's a stretch to say that Michael is a man ahead of his time. Long before the Internet made it a whole lot easier to be an independent media producer, Michael was doing it with Let's Go Outdoors, where he covers all kinds of stories to do with land, air and water, and distributed them on radio, TV and now online. His business model on Let's Go Outdoors is sponsorship. Like-minded organizations pay to be associated with his stories, but don't dictate what his stories are; they look to him to use his news judgment, tell the stories in a compelling way, and then get them in front of the right people. He also does freelance video and is always on the lookout for his next opportunity. As the media landscape has changed, Michael has changed along with it, and I think he has a lot to teach us about resilience, perseverance, and the power of good stories. He was also very frank about the challenges. This isn't an easy path, but if you want to make a go of it, Michael shows it's possible — you just have to go in with your eyes open. In this episode, you'll hear about how Michael got started in mainstream media; what it took to make a go of it on his own; how to keep sponsors happy; how to serve audiences well; the value of going deep on a niche; the pros and cons of having a direct connection to your audience; the primary power of curiosity; and the importance of strong production values — especially audio — if you want to sell sponsorships. This episode is also available in Apple Podcasts, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. You can follow Let's Go Outdoors on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, and you can subscribe to the Let's Go Outdoors podcast in Apple Podcasts. Thanks to our door prize donors for adding a little sugar to our meetup: Variant Edition, which also kindly hosts our regular get-togethers; Unbelts, which has a special offer on right now in honour of its launch; and Taproot Edmonton, which is putting on a live event on June 21, called Taproot Live: What's your urban planning wish? Thanks, too, to CafeRista for catering our event. Our next Edmonton Podcasting Meetup is slated for July 30 at Variant Edition. Save the date and watch for details. Meet Andrew Paul, who uses his journalistic chops to tell stories about philanthropy and good works in Edmonton as part of the team that produces The Well-Endowed Podcast. Andrew came up through alt-weeklies and magazines after he graduated from the journalism program at MacEwan. He shifted into doing public relations for arts and non-profit organizations with his now-wife, Fawnda Mithrush, and ended up at the Edmonton Community Foundation, which encourages philanthropy and funds charitable activities. The podcast is an extension of the foundation's efforts to tell the stories of its donors and the work it supports or is aligned with. Andrew co-hosts it with Elizabeth Bonkink, and Lisa Pruden produces it. As you'll hear, Edmonton is a trailblazer among community foundations by reaching out in this way. The foundation is looking for freelance contributors to the podcast. If you have experience and interest in producing audio stories, contact Lisa at lpruden@ecfoundation.org. Also in this episode: the story behind Well-Endowed's snappy theme song; what Andrew learned from Paul Matwychuk of Trash, Art, and the Movies; where a journalism degree can take you; lessons learned from producing I Don't Get It, a podcast about contemporary dance; and Andrew's advice for a not-for-profit contemplating starting a podcast. This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. Andrew made the following recommendations: Omar Mouallem's four-episode run as guest host on Canadaland: Travel Journalism's Dirty Little Secret; Jason Kenney Is A Charming Man: Inside Alberta's Weird Conservatism; Why Your Rap Lyrics Could Land You In Prison; It Was Illegal To Print Their Names: Alberta's Lost Children. Modern Manhood by German Villegas; The Broadcast by Trisha Estabrooks and Alex Zabjek. You can subscribe to The Well-Endowed Podcast on Apple Podcasts and Google Play. You can find the Edmonton Community Foundation on Facebook and on Twitter (@theecf). The next Edmonton Podcasting Meetup takes place on June 17 at 1 p.m. at Variant Edition Comics & Culture. We'll be talking to Michael Short of Let's Go Outdoors about how to make a living in new media. Register here to attend. According to Canadian anti-euthanasia campaigner Alex Schadenberg, Melbourne doctor Rodney Syme is a threat to society: a ‘cowboy’ and ‘the worst of the worst’. Why? Because for over a decade now, Syme has been publicly assisting terminally and chronically ill patients to die – despite the threat of jail for doing so. How did a respectable 80-year-old urologist come to be a law-breaking cowboy? Melbourne urologist Rodney Syme — Photo: supplied 'I thought: what is ethical about me being able to end my own suffering but my patients have to go on?' Rodney Syme Sandra Morris and Albert Leonzini, both featured in this episode — Photo: Emily Sexton It began 40 years ago, with a patient of his who was dying of kidney cancer. Her name was Betty. Syme could hear her screams from the foyer of the hospital. He didn’t know how to help her – but his conscience was pricked. Syme knew that, as a doctor, if he were in the same kind of pain, he could find drugs – or help from other doctors – that would mean he didn’t have to suffer like Betty. He began to wonder: why should he have access to this help, but not his patients? Over the last two decades, Rodney Syme estimates that he’s helped more than 100 people to die. Assisting a suicide carries a maximum five-year jail term in Victoria. But, despite publicly challenging the police to charge him, no charges have yet been laid. In late 2015, on national television, Syme admitted that he had helped Point Lonsdale man Steve Guest to die. He continues to provoke the law in the hope that a new and more compassionate one can be written: one that allows people with unbearable and untreatable suffering to request assistance to die. Please note: this podcast is not about suicide.
