Their 2014 book “H is for Hawk” tells the true story of a year spent training a northern goshawk while grieving. The book won, among many other things, the Samuel Johnson Prize for literature. Kimberly McClain DaCosta is a sociologist interested in racial inequality and, in particular, the contemporary production of racial boundaries. Her book, Making Multiracials: State, Family, and Market in the Redrawing of the Color Line (Stanford University Press, 2007), explores the cultural and social underpinnings of the movement to create multiracial collective identity in the United States. Professor DaCosta is currently writing on how genealogy and interracial extended kin relationships speak to questions of interracial empathy, care and politics. She teaches courses on race in different societies, social mobility, consumerism, and the commercialization of intimate life. DaCosta has held several administrative posts including both the Associate Dean of Students and the Associate Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs at NYU's Gallatin School. She has been involved in NYU's Prison Education Program since its inception in 2013, serving on its Steering Committee and as its Faculty Director. A native of Boston, Kim received a B.A. in Sociology magna cum laude from Harvard University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.

From Portarlington to Pennsylvania – Shane Patrick Ryan is an American-Irish swimmer who competes internationally for Ireland. Shane is a firm believer in learning from your past experiences and using these to move forward and mature from them. Shane's hard work and determination, traits that have stood to him as an elite athlete, paid off handsomely as he graduated from high school and received a scholarship to Penn State University, graduating with a degree in Event Management. Shane's determination and dedication to swimming is unrivalled. Shane qualified for Rio Olympics in 2016, with the medals to prove it, won bronze in the 50m backstrokes at the 2018 World Short Course Championships, and in 2019 won the European Short Course bronze. Shane lives by the saying, "if you can do it in 60 seconds, then do it". Even simple tasks such as making the bed – that was one task he could tick off daily. Each day he tried to be better than the previous day.

On this week's show, we discuss the controversial move to sell the American Irish Historical Society's headquarters on Fifth Avenue. The Society announced the sale of the property in late January - much to the shock of the Irish American Community. The building, which has been home to the society for decades, is on the market for $52 million and houses a library and research facilitywith thousands of rare Irish books and documents. News of the sale has generated headlines from both sides of the Atlantic and the Irish government has described it as a “deeply disappointing development."Former AIHS Board Chairman Brian McCabe and former AIHS events and marketing coordinator Sophie Colgan join me on this week's show. Brian and Sophie drafted an online petition recently to stop the sale of the building and appeal for a change in the society's governance.It has gained nearly 6,000 signatures. Sophie also wrote a heartfelt appeal on the Irish Echo to stop the Sale which received widespread praise and elevated the sale to become a major talking point among everyday Irish Americans. Anne McCaffrey, in conversation with Richard A. Lupoff and Richard Wolinsky, from the Probabilities Archive, recorded June 29, 1992. Her most recent novels at the time were The Rowan and Damia. From Wikipedia: Anne Inez McCaffrey (1 April 1926 – 21 November 2011) was an American-Irish writer known for the Dragonriders of Pern science fiction series. She was the first woman to win a Hugo Award for fiction (Best Novella, “Weyr Search”, 1968) and the first to win a Nebula Award (Best Novella, “Dragonrider”, 1969). Her 1978 novel The White Dragon became one of the first science-fiction books to appear on the New York Times Best Seller list. In 2005 the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America named McCaffrey its 22nd Grand Master, an annual award to living writers of fantasy and science fiction. In some developed countries funeral businesses are using cutting edge tech including sophisticated recording set ups in places of worship to bring together mourners from across the world. People are moving more and more online not only with virtual memorials, RFID tags on gravestones and also ceremonies in gaming environments including Animal Crossing. And we find out more about the Reimagine Festival that’s about to start. The now virtual event explores death during COVID-19 and we see how people are determining their digital legacies after they die. The Land Before Time is a 1988 American-Irish animated adventure drama film directed and produced by Don Bluth and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, and Frank Marshall. Produced by Sullivan Bluth Studios, Amblin Entertainment and Lucasfilm, it features dinosaurs living in the prehistoric times. The plot concerns a young Longneck named Littlefoot who is orphaned[4] when his mother is killed by a Sharptooth. Littlefoot flees famine and upheaval to search for the Great Valley, an area spared from devastation. On his journey, he meets four young companions: Cera the Threehorn, Ducky the Bigmouth, Petrie the Flyer, and Spike the Spiketail. The film explores issues of prejudice between the different species and the hardships they endure in their journey as they are guided by the spirit of Littlefoot's mother and forced to deal with the Sharptooth. This is the only Don Bluth film of the 1980s in which Dom DeLuise did not participate (instead, he starred in Disney's Oliver & Company that same year), and the only film in The Land Before Time series that is not a musical, as well as the only one to be released theatrically worldwide. Dr. Maureen Murphy, co-director of the undergraduate Irish Studies minor at Hofstra University in Long Island, N.Y., is the current Peter O’Brien Visiting Scholar at the School of Irish Studies. Murphy was the Director of the Great Irish Famine Curriculum Project for the New York State Department of Education. The Great Irish Famine Curriculum (2001) won the Project Excellence Award from the National Council of the Social Studies in 2002. She has served as Vice-President of the New York State English Council. A past president of the American Conference for Irish Studies and a past chair of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures, Murphy has lectured and published widely in Irish literature, folklore, history and American Irish literature and culture. Raised in Chicago and Wicklow, Nicholas Grene, Professor of Literature at Trinity College Dublin, launches his new memoir, Nothing Quite Like It: An American Irish Childhood.

The Forge (http://www.theforgemusic.com) are a traditional Irish music group, of whom Brian O'Donovan (A Celtic Soujourn - WGBH) says "A new band shows up on the scene and immediately seems destined to make an impact.  The Forge are a bright new name in the American Irish music scene. Paying homage to their traditional roots while creating something new.”  The members, Maeve Gilchrist (harp, voice), Cara Francowicz (fiddle), Nicole Rabata (Irish Flute), and Anna Colliton (Bodhran) are all distinguished as soloists and side musicians on other projects across the musical spectrum, but decided at a session in the wee small hours at a music festival to become a group.  This was a very informational chat for me, as the Forge shed light on their embellishment and arrangement techniques.  Music featured includes selections from the group's website (Dever the Dancer, Sweet Rosemarie, The Blackbird, and  and a set made up of Bold Dougherty/Palm Sunday/The Legacy) plus a selection from Maeve Gilchrist's CD Song of Delight (called "Take off Your Coat") which I included to illustrate Maeve's harmonic invention and way of crafting an intro to a tune.
