Today, I'm joined by writer Ausma Zehanat Khan to discuss how she explores the scope and horror of nationalism, Islamophobia, and racism in page-turner detective novels. As a Muslim woman and former immigration and human rights lawyer, Ausma draws on her professional and personal experiences to craft enticing storylines around topics like criminal justice reform and race relations. In our conversation, we unpack themes and details of her most recent book, Blackwater Falls, and Ausma provides insight into what inspired her to pursue this story. We also touch on some of Ausma's earlier work, including her decade-long research on The Balkan Wars that informed her debut novel, The Unquiet Dead.Ausma has a unique perspective on American politics as a Canadian living in rural Colorado. She sees first-hand the impact of systemic racism and xenophobia on BIPOC communities in her area. Set in a similar town to where Ausma currently lives, Blackwater Falls illuminates the nuances of how ultra-nationalist movements gain traction and eventually erase multiculturalism. Through the heavy topics, Ausma also artfully weaves in elements of romance, family dynamics, and small town drama. Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Castbox, or on your favorite podcast platform.Topics Covered:●      What sparked Ausma's investigation on military intervention and war crimes of The Balkan Wars●      Using crime fiction as a way to communicate about systemic injustices ●      The identity challenges that many BIPOC law enforcement officers face ●      Ausma's thought process behind the three main power structures in Blackwater Falls●      The signs and consequences of ‘incrementalism' in American politicsGuest Info:●      Ausma's Website ●      Ausma's Instagram ●      Ausma's Facebook ●      Ausma's Twitter  Follow Me:●      My Instagram ●      My LinkedIn●      My Twitter●      Art Heals All Wounds Website●      Art Heals All Wounds Instagram●      Art Heals All Wounds Twitter ●      Art Heals All Wounds Facebook●      Art Heals All Wounds Newsletter

I hope you all are enjoying Ramadan. In this beginners lesson I chat to my sister Melati Lum and we will be going through some sentences using the verb اكل or He Ate in the past tense. Melati is releasing her third book in the Ayesha Dean series called Ayesha Dean: The Lisbon Lawbreaker. Melati is a writer with a background in criminal law who has prosecuted a range of serious offences in the courts. She's an Australian, Malay/Chinese, Muslim mum who loves to read books and enjoys visiting different places around the world. Melati aims to contribute towards diversifying the range of heroines and heroes available to young people. She lives in Adelaide, Australia with her family (including two very fluffy, hypoallergenic, Siberian cats). If you have a young adult in your household, go buy a copy for Eid! Bit.ly/TheLisbonLawbreakerBookDep Teenage sleuth Ayesha Dean is in Portugal, the land of delicious custard tarts, gorgeous sunsets, and piri-piri chicken. But a bungled good deed abruptly lands her on the wrong side of the law. If she tells all, she risks gaol. If she delves further into a mysterious death, she risks her life. If only this Australian could simply eat her way out of trouble. But no such luck. This time Ayesha Dean is in way over her head! “The perfect combination of history, adventure, and travel with a vividly drawn and charming cast. Ayesha Dean is one of the best new characters in middle-grade mystery.” - AUSMA ZEHANAT KHAN, author of A Deadly Divide

Bestselling author Ausma Zehanat Khan hosts a conversation with Uzma Jalaluddin about her acclaimed new YA novel, Hana Khan Carries On. From the author of Ayesha at Last comes a sparkling new rom-com set in two competing halal restaurants. Sales are slow at Three Sisters Biryani Poutine, the only halal restaurant in the close-knit Golden Crescent neighbourhood. Hana waitresses there part time, but what she really wants is to tell stories on the radio. If she can just outshine her fellow intern at the city radio station, she may have a chance at landing a job. In the meantime, Hana pours her thoughts and dreams into a podcast, where she forms a lively relationship with one of her listeners. But soon she'll need all the support she can get: a new competing restaurant, a more upscale halal place, is about to open in the Golden Crescent, threatening Three Sisters. When her mysterious aunt and her teenage cousin arrive from India for a surprise visit, they draw Hana into a long-buried family secret. A hate-motivated attack on their neighbourhood complicates the situation further, as does Hana's growing attraction for Aydin, the young owner of the rival restaurant—who might not be a complete stranger after all. Everything I was excited about doing this summer has been canceled, and I’m now suffering from a lack of things to look forward to. I was wondering if you could recommend a great series that has another book coming out a few/several months from now so I can read the book(s) that already exist and then eagerly anticipate the next installment! Some things I like include high fantasy, woman (or nonbinary) authors and characters, LGBTQness, and audiobooks. Thanks! –Emma 2. Hello!  My mom is an avid reader, definitely gravitating toward mystery/thrillers, historical fiction and most specifically anything by Eric Larson.  She has already devoured his newest book, The Splendid and the Vile, and has read nearly all of his backlist.  Do you have any author comps for Larson that I could pass on to her?   Thanks!! –Rachael 3. I’m looking for books that would make great read-alouds for my 8th grade English/Language Arts class.  I’ve been teaching for five years, and I’ve always done the same read-alouds each year: Love that Dog by Sharon Creech, Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, and Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth.  I’d like to change it up with some newer books as the ones I mentioned above are aging out; as my students have pointed out: “None of these characters even have a cellphone!”  Some preferences I have for our read-alouds:   interesting characters that help my students experience lives that are different from their own (I teach in a small town in Minnesota) minimum cursing (see above about teaching in a small town in Minnesota) engaging storylines that get students excited to hear what happens next bonus points if the chapters are shorter so I have natural stopping points each day Thanks for your help! Love the show! –Grace 4. Hello! I love the podcast and I have gotten soooo many good recommendations (both from a couple of asks that I have made previously and just from listening every week). I recently lured my wife into being a bookworm (I even got her on Libby, the proudest moment of my life!). She has gone from maybe reading 1 book in a year to tearing through about 30 books and graphic novels (the gateway drug!) in about 3 months time. The problem: she’s starting to run out of material! She’s pretty set for the next few months, but might run out of books to read over the summer. Her birthday is August 2nd and so I’m hoping to pick up some new books for her by then. She LOVES Star Wars and that is what the vast majority of her reading so far has been. She is looking for ideas for books, especially if they are series, outside of Star Wars, but that give her some of the same things that she loves about Star Wars. Things she likes about Star Wars: all of the aliens and creatures, good vs. evil, and the world-building. Things that she didn’t specifically identify when I asked her what she liked, but are definitely elements that I know she likes: strong female leads and found family (but who doesn’t love those things?!). Bonus for good queer representation, which is very obviously lacking in Star Wars. She is a bit of a weeny and doesn’t like things that are scary (sometimes Doctor Who episodes scare her, so you be the judge…) or have a lot of gore. Some things that I have thought to recommend to her were the Becky Chambers books and Saga (if she ever thought that she could get past the violence and gore).  Thank you!!!!!!!! –Heidi 5. Hi! I am a new listener and am thoroughly enjoying listening to the show! I just got married in November and my husband and I will be honeymooning to Austria at the end of June. I LOVE travel books in general, but would really like to read some fiction/historical fiction about  Vienna and Salzburg. We are also going to try to do a day trip to Bratislava as well, so I would happily welcome a book set in Slovakia. Thank you! –Kira 6. I’m doing the 2020 Read Harder Challenge and I’m looking for a book for the disabled protagonist task, specifically a Native American protagonist. I’m Native and one of my New Year’s reading resolutions is to read more books by Native Americans, so I’m trying to choose books by/about Native Americans for as many of the challenge tasks as possible. I’ve read Absolute True Story of a Part-Time Indian, but I’m trying to avoid reading any more Sherman Alexie since the MeToo stories about him. Thanks in advance. –Cheryl 7. Hello! I was wondering if you have any recommendations for books where adoption is a main theme. Many of the books I’ve found are a bit outdated or cheesy and instructional. I recently pickup up Nichole Chung’s “All You Can Ever Know”. I also found “Motherhood So White” on book riot’s website. My husband and I are starting to look into adoption as a way to be parents and I’d love to find some insightful stories or memoirs (or even fiction), preferably that feature diversity of story, race, and background. Ausma Zehanat Khan is the author of two series that we talk about in our conversation today. She’s got an incredibly storied and qualified history as a former professor and current Ph.D in International Human Rights. Her debut, the first in her mystery series starring Toronto detectives Rachel Getty and Esa Khattak, was released in 2015 and deals with the aftermath of the 1995 Bosnian Srebrenica massacre as the central investigation, with a lot more to it that we’ll get into during our chat. Khan also has a fantasy series wrapping up this year. It’s a quartet of novels, originally planned at three but expanded in the style of George RR Martin, set in a fantastical version of the Muslim world. The Khorasan archives, incredibly, are an epic fantasy series that have come out one per year, starting with 2017’s Bloodprint and concluding with this year’s Bladebone. The books, starring Arian, Sinnia, and Daniyar, on a quest to right wrongs, depict an all too familiarly adjacent anti-intellectual setting, with the heroes trying to preserve knowledge and heritage in the face of ignorance. Speaking of things concluding. We talked, appropriately, on the eve of Ramadan’s end, in a unique year where our collective situation is ripe for month-long reflection, but at least in my case really challenging when it comes to fasting, if the snacks we keep in the house are any indication. This conversation is one that’s been a long time coming, and I’m really happy to have had a chance to do this chat. #VerseShow comprises conversations that give voice to creators, their process, their struggles, and the celebrations of their work. It's an interview podcast with a bend toward curiosity about the creative process.

This episode is sponsored by The Bloodprint by Ausma Zehanat Khan and All The Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater.   Questions 1. Hi guys, I’m a big horror/thriller fan and I’m looking to include more diverse authors and protagonists in my reading. Most recently I read and loved Lovecraft Country in which a Black community comes together to battle eldritch horrors. I like Joe Hill, Shirley Jackson, Jack Ketchum, novels or short stories, and both supernatural or more reality based stories as long as there’s a scary/spooky atmosphere. Can you recommend some horror authors who are people of color, LGBT or from a religious minority? Or horror books that have a non-white, non-straight protagonist? thanks so much! love the podcast even though you make my TBR pile teeter with all the books I add after hearing of them from you. --Vanessa   2. I just binge watched Twin Peaks and loved it. I'm a sucker for small town drama with mystical elements, and was wondering if you guys had any book recs similar to that. I found some lists online that were mainly comprised of thrillers like Gone Girl, which isn't really my thing. Somebody recommended American Gods to me, and I can see why. I've already read it, and liked it very much, but don't feel like rereading it. Any other suggestions? (Note: I've already read everything written by Neil Gaiman) --Diane   3. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I am seeking book recommendations for my mom who recently retired from a career in early childhood care. As she has not been able to dive into books without crayon marks in years and is unsure of where to start looking, I would like to offer her a number of suggestions from multiple areas -- short stories and fast-paced novels are especially welcome. She is not into horror or science fiction, but she's happy to try other genres. Thank you so much! --Laura   4. Hi ladies, My boyfriend and I met online and immediately bonded over our shared love of books. We've spent countless weekends lounging around reading together in silence. He recently brought up the idea of reading books together and I am 1000% on board. My problem is: how do we choose? I have a 1000+ book "To Read" list on Goodreads and follow all the BookRiot podcasts; he loves to just wander into bookstores and pick up whatever catches his eye. We both enjoy sci-fi and fantasy but my tastes skew a bit more to the side of literary fiction (favorite book: The Sparrow) and he is inclined towards more epic, action-packed adventures (favorite book: anything from the Dark Tower series). I also love nonfiction, which he has never really gotten into despite his love of documentaries. Do you have any recommendations for books that will satisfy us both? I'm thinking something by Terry Prachett or Neil Gaiman would be a good start but would love some more ideas. Thank you! --Ashley   5. Hi Ladies! One of my favorite books of all time is We Have Always Lived In the Castle by Shirley Jackson. Also just recently I discovered the Flavia de Luce series and I'm enjoying it very much. My favorite aspect is that these books focus on creepy smart girls. Do you have any more recs that contain creepy smart girls as main characters? I prefer books on audio. Thanks ladies! --Amanda   6. Hi there! It seems like a majority of the contemporary novels I've read recently either take place in the Midwest or in New York or feature characters from the Midwest who have moved to New York. I enjoy these books, as they tend to feature multi-dimensional characters with rich stories but I grew up and still live in the DC/Maryland area and I would love to read a novel that takes place around here. The only thing is that I don't want to read a DC novel that features politicians or bureaucrats or political intrigue. The only one I know of so far is The Known World so anything else that you can recommend would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! --Aneesa   7. Having had a challenging time with my mental health at the beginning of the year, I have really struggled to get back into the physical act of reading (although have still been buying books, oops). I find audiobooks and podcasts easy to follow as it tends to be my focus that slips. However due to the pile of physical books I own, I am looking for some gateway easy to read books to get back into being a reader and not just a listener. I typically prefer fiction over non-fiction but like a wide range of genres and am willing to give anything a go (although I don't typically enjoy pure romance outside of YA). I do generally lean toward thrillers and mysteries, but think maybe the typically darker subject matter is part of the problem. Any recommendations would be great. Thank you very much for the podcast, your enthusiasm about the books you talk about has really encouraged and ignited my desire to start reading again. --Megan   Books Provenance by Ann Leckie Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle Ghost Summer by Tananarive Due Universal Harvester by John Darnielle Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevin Kraken by China Miéville An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon Coraline by Neil Gaiman Swamplandia! by Karen Russell (trigger warning: rape, suicide) The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler Song Yet Sung by James McBride A Front Page Affair by Radha Vatsal (Kitty Weeks #1) The Quiche of Death by MC Beaton (Agatha Raisin #1)

Episode 3 is an interview with author  Désirée Zamorano. We talk about her masterful PI novel, Human Cargo; her short story, "Quickie;" Akashic Books' Mondays Are Murder flash fiction series (hers will go live on August 1st!); and we briefly touch on her literary novel, The Amado Women. Désirée isn't just a writer, she is a fellow mystery lover, and she gives a shout-out to a number of fabulous writers and books. I've linked to the websites of these contemporary writers: Edgar winner Naomi Hirahara, Ausma Zehanat Khan, Sara Gran, best-selling author Kate Atkinson, James Sallis (who has won the lifetime achievement award from Bouchercon, among many other mystery awards), Rachel Howzell Hall, Sue Ann Jaffarian, and the wonderful Steph Cha, whom I interviewed in Episode 2. Classic mystery writers include Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, John D. MacDonald (the Travis McGee novels) and Patricia Highsmith. One last influential writer mentioned, although not in the field of mystery, is Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. We talk about books and writing, but we also discussed the need for women to be financially savvy and have an "escape fund" -- not necessarily to escape a dangerous relationship (although obviously that can help), but also so you're not stuck in a bad work situation. Money is freedom.  The most important links, however, are the ones Désirée sent me on human trafficking: Fighting Human Trafficking, and 20 Ways You Can Help If you'd rather read than listen, here is the transcript. Enjoy! Transcript of interview with Désirée Zamorano Welcome to Destination Mystery: A Podcast for Readers who Love a Good Mystery. I’m Laura Brennan. A Pushcart Prize nominee and award-winning short story author, Desiree Zamorano has wrestled with culture, identity, and the invisibility of Latinas from early on and addressed that in her commentaries which have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, NPR’s Latino USA, and Publisher’s Weekly. She is also proud of having co-authored with her sister two plays commissioned by Southern California's Bilingual Foundation for the Arts. "Reina" and "Bell Gardens 90201" received Equity productions and toured for a total of eight years. She delights in the exploration of contemporary issues of injustice and inequality, via her mystery series featuring private investigator, Inez Leon, published by Lucky Bat Books. Human Cargo was Latinidad's Mystery Pick of the Year. Her novel, Modern Cons is a story of psychological suspense where she explores the reverberations of being raised by a con artist. Laura Brennan: Thank you for being here. I'm so excited. Désirée Zamorano: Whoo-hoo! LB: How are you, Désirée? DZ: Me, too. I'm excited, too. LB: Tell me a little bit about yourself. How did you get started writing? DZ: We writers are all a crazy bunch and we probably as kids said, Oh, I want to create something so wonderful, because as kids we have fallen into this world. And as kids we have this naïve perception that writers just magically put those words on the page. Well, I wanted to magically put those words on the page! But as I got older I realized it took a lot of work to make the work look seamless. So you asked how I got into it. I always wanted to be a writer and I started sending off my short stories -- those were a big deal as I was my twenties, short stories were the thing -- and after about 100 rejections, two acceptances and $50, I thought wow, that's a lot of heartache! I mean, if I'm going to deal with rejection, I might as well go big time. So I sat down to write a novel. I'm going okay, I'm going to write the Great American novel. And I sat down to write a novel and I thought, I have no idea what I'm doing. And I thought about all the books I loved to read and I love classics, I love contemporary modern fiction, but have a real soft spot for mysteries. And what I love about mysteries, and what I loved as I sat down to write mysteries,
