Thanks! As a new academic year gets underway, many of us are wondering: what law-school scandals lie in store? To discuss current hot-button issues facing legal academia, including free speech, intellectual diversity, and affirmative action, I could think of no better podcast guest than Professor Amy Chua. As a longtime member of the Yale Law School faculty, she's had a front-row seat to—and personal involvement in—several of YLS's recent controversies.  Yale Law insanity aside, there was another reason I wanted to interview Amy, the author of two New York Times bestsellers—most notably, her 2011 memoir, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (2011). This month, Minotaur Books, Macmillan's mystery- and thriller-focused imprint, is publishing her first novel, The Golden Gate. I devoured it in two days, and I can attest that it's a great read—a historically rich page-turner that will teach you about California history while keeping you on the edge of your seat. One other thing: loyal listeners might notice this episode is going up on Thursday rather than its usual day of Wednesday. There's a good reason for that: my sound engineer Tommy Harron and his wife just welcomed their second child to the world. Congratulations to them on this great news.Show Notes:* Amy Chua bio, Yale Law School* The Golden Gate, Amazon* All About Amy (Chua), The Law Professor We Can't Stop Talking About, by David Lat for Original JurisdictionPrefer reading to listening? Now retired from his previous life, Dez is just a bloke with a winning smile, a bass guitar, and bullet wounds that paint a road map of past lives. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4268760/advertisement

57. Mary Dixie Carter, Novelist

The 92 Report

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2023 48:04

Show Notes Mary Dixie Carter, a journalist and author, talks about her journey after graduating from Harvard. She starts with her novel,  The Photographer. The novel focuses on Delta Dawn, a disturbed woman who is the subject of the novel. Mary explains that she got the idea for the book when she hired a photographer to take pictures of her kids.  The photographer took photos of the children but the eyes in the photos were unnaturally bright blue. When questioned, the photographer said that there is no real color, which made Mary think about the photographer's point of view, and how the character could make the world whatever she wanted it to be. This later transpired to be a novel about a woman who is an outsider and wants desperately to be part of something. The character in the novel is a photographer who inserts herself into a wealthy Manhattan family, and over the course of the book she becomes an integral part of the family. Her behavior is considered to be horrible, and it is suggested that her desperate desire to belong and her misplaced idea of what that means is the reason for this. The photographer ends up using the family and the family uses her, forming an awkward and fraught relationship. Mary talks about how her characters are based on a combination of her own experiences and people she knows. She talks about how the creepiness of the book reflects the dark and disturbing side of human nature. Will and Mary discuss the importance of creating art that reflects a variety of experiences and perspectives.  Mary talks about the media she did for the book and the questions. She explains that she was often asked where she got the idea for the book and the character, in addition to questions about motherhood, and social media. She also talks about lying, why she is so interested in it,  and how it is at the core of the book, as Delta Dawn lies to herself and actually believes the stories she makes up. Finally, she notes that we all come into contact with people who lie to themselves. A Career in Acting and Journalism Mary has had an interesting journey since graduating college. She moved to New York and auditioned for plays and studied acting, then moved to Los Angeles for a few years where she was cast in plays and classical theater.  Eventually she moved back to the East Coast when her husband was accepted to Harvard, and she accepted her father's offer to work for his newspaper, The New York Observer. She worked there for six years until Jared Kushner bought the paper and she left. She started freelancing and wrote for various publications such as The Economist, San Francisco Chronicle and Chicago Tribune. After becoming pregnant with her first child and her mother passing away, she decided to focus her creative energy on writing. She wrote a novel which was not published, and eventually put it aside before moving on and writing the book that became The Photographer.  Finding an Agent and Focusing on Writing After a period of struggling to be published, Mary found a wonderful agent and is thrilled with the people at Minotaur Books, St. Martin's Press who published her first book. She is currently writing her second book tentatively called Marguerite by the Lake, which has a bit of a Gothic feel, meanwhile, the first book is being developed into a TV series. Though it has taken longer than she expected, she hopes to have the second book finished by the end of the summer, potentially releasing it in 2024. Meeting the Trumps Mary shares a few thoughts on Jared Kushner when he bought the paper from her father. She noted that he was very knowledgeable and charming in the beginning, but changed his direction once the paper was sold. She believes that Jared lacks a moral compass, and does what is convenient and most beneficial to him at the time, rather than being rooted in what is right or good. Mary talks about meeting Donald Trump. Mary speculated that Trump was hoping to get some positive coverage in the newspaper where she was working, but the newspaper had integrity and wouldn't write a puff piece about Trump. Reflections on Professors and Courses When thinking back to Harvard, Mary reflects on two influential teachers,  Helen Vendler. She was greatly impacted by Helen's readings of poetry, as she was able to experience the sound of the words and their lyricism. The second teacher, D. A. Miller's unique approach to Jane Austen was also impactful, as he was able to teach the novels in a way that truly allowed her to appreciate the literature. Both of these teachers left a lasting impression on the speaker, and have likely influenced her reading and writing. When a misunderstanding at a Panera results in an offer that's impossible to refuse, Elle Cosimano's title character springs to life for readers who can't help but root for her heroine to find love, money, and kick a lot of butt along the way. Elle returns to the podcast to talk to Olivia about the third book in her series, FINLAY DONOVAN JUMPS THE GUN. This time we see Finlay and her bestie/nanny/accountant, Vero, head off to a citizen's police academy that puts her right in the focus of the police, for better or worse. The author says the situation was inspired by a real-life writer's academy she took part in, which provides a safe space to ask questions that might otherwise make you look like an aspiring serial killer. “My google search probably has me on several very scary watchlists… but the writer's police academy was great for those questions that would be frowned upon for asking anywhere else!” FINLAY DONOVAN JUMPS THE GUN is available from Minotaur Books on January 31, 2023, and as an audiobook from Macmillan Audio. [audio mp3=“https://media.talkaboutlasvegas.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/11130715/Michael_Cannell_101220.mp3"][/audio] This week, Ira spoke with former New York Times Editor and Time Magazine Reporter Michael Cannell, author of the new book, “A Brotherhood Betrayed: The Man Behind the Rise and Fall of Murder, Inc.," published by Minotaur Books. In this 30-minute episode of Talk About Las Vegas, Cannell talks about the formation of The Commission, which was the corporate structure of organized crime and integrated disparate criminal gangs; the creation of Murder, Inc. that enforced the commission’s edicts; the incredible turnabout by the mob’s chief enforcer, who agreed to testify against the men who sanctioned the killing of witnesses, including the mob’s own soldiers; the hazy line between law enforcement and criminals; and the impact of organized crime on the formation of Las Vegas.

Lady Cecily Kay has just returned to England when she encounters Sir Barnaby Mayne. It’s 1703, Queen Anne is on the throne, and London’s coffee houses are buzzing with discussions of everything from science and philosophy to monsters and magic. Of course, Cecily has no plans to join the ongoing conversations; coffee houses bar the door to female visitors, however intelligent and learned. But she has secured something better: an entrée to the house of the city’s most influential collector, where she can compare her list of previously unknown plants to his rooms filled with specimens and, with luck, identify them. On Cecily’s first day in the Mayne house, however, Sir Barnaby is stabbed to death. His meek curator confesses to the crime, and even the victim’s widow seems willing to ignore any discrepancies in the evidence. With assistance from her childhood friend Meacan Barlow, an illustrator also living in Sir Barnaby’s house, Cecily sets out to tie up the loose ends on a murder that far too many people would prefer to remain unsolved. Her quest leads her into the shadowy world of London’s collectors, who will stop at nothing to cut out the competition and have no qualms about silencing a pair of nosy women who are coming too close to the truth. In The Cabinets of Barnaby Mayne (Minotaur Books, 2020), Elsa Hart the author of the famed Li Du novels, here brings her talent for spinning a great yarn and crafting a compelling mystery to a new place, which—as you will learn in the interview—is in fact her original literary destination, attained at last. If there is one thing more fun than discovering a new (to oneself) author, it is discovering a new author with a series already well underway. In City of Ink (Minotaur Books, 2018), the third of Elsa Hart’s mystery novels set in early eighteenth-century China during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor and featuring former imperial librarian Li Du and his storytelling friend Hamza, Li has returned to his former home of Beijing. His intention is to learn more about the events that led to his own exile from the capital years before, the result of guilt by association. But he soon discovers that the imperial library has been closed since his departure, and to make ends meet, he takes a job with his former brother-in-law, in charge of the North Borough Office. When, on the eve of the imperial examinations, a young woman is murdered at a tile factory in the North Borough, Li accompanies the investigator. The case appears to be clear-cut, since the victim turns out to be the wife of the tile-factory owner, and she is found with a man whom everyone assumes to be her lover. Clearly, this is a crime of passion, committed by the jealous husband. The authorities rush to endorse this explanation, since crimes of passion are not punishable under the law and the whole matter can be neatly swept under the rug before the imperial examinations begin. But no case associated with Li Du is ever what it seems. As he and Hamza chase the real solution through the locked alleys of Beijing and past the city walls into the surrounding territory, Hart’s richly informed, beautifully detailed, and wonderfully complex yet satisfying story plays out against the backdrop of early Qing China, with its rebels, dynasts, foreign visitors, and ordinary folk with conflicting motives—not to mention Li Du’s own troubled past. C. P. Lesley is the author of nine novels, including Legends of the Five Directions (The Golden Lynx, The Winged Horse, The Swan Princess, The Vermilion Bird, and The Shattered Drum), a historical fiction series set during the childhood of Ivan the Terrible, and Song of the Siren, published in 2019. Well-brought-up Victorian ladies don’t expect their childhood nemeses to write from out of the blue, pleading for help because, as the nemesis so tactfully puts it, “what lady of my rank would associate with persons who investigate crimes?” In this case, the crime is murder, and the summons brings Lady Emily Hargreaves post-haste from London to aid and support Contessa Emma Barozzi–nee Callum, and the nemesis from Emily’s past–whose husband the Venetian police suspect of dispatching his own father with a medieval stiletto and fleeing with Emma’s inheritance, a cache of illuminated Renaissance manuscript books. Although tempted to refuse Emma’s plea for help, Emily cannot abandon a fellow Englishwoman in the midst of crisis–or turn down an opportunity to overcome the petty dislikes of childhood. Moreover, Emily, through no fault of her own, has amassed a certain amount of experience in solving deadly crimes in London, Vienna, Istanbul, and rural France. With her husband, an agent of the British crown, she plunges into an unfamiliar, sometimes terrifying, but appealing world of art, gondolas, canals, decaying palazzi, back streets, brothels, bookstores, carnival figures, and ancient noble families with unresolved feuds that predate Romeo and Juliet. Soon Emily begins to suspect that the key to the mystery lies four centuries in the past, with links to the fifteenth-century ring found clasped in the victim’s dead hand. This is the seventh of Lady Emily’s adventures, which began with And Only to Deceive. The next in the Lady Emily series, Behind the Shattered Glass, is due off-press in October 2013. On what Tasha has in store for her characters after that, you will have to listen to the podcast. She is a wonderful speaker: I promise you will not be disappointed.
