The Otto Legacy. An Award Winning Documentary. High End Fashion. Gracie Otto is one of the Ottos—you know, Barry and Miranda Otto, Australian cinematic royalty. But she has carved out her own space in the industry. She’s the director behind The Other Guy, Deadloch, The Artful Dodger, and Heartbreak High. However, it’s her most recent film, the AACTA-winning documentary Otto by Otto, that pulls back the curtain on the Otto family. What began as a project documenting her father, Barry, as he prepared to premiere a one-man show became something far more personal. Through her lens, Gracie realised she was capturing the unfolding reality of her dad’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. What You’ll Hear: How Otto by Otto became a heartbreaking portrait of her father, Barry Otto The highs and lows of a career in Australian film and theatre The challenge of documenting a loved one’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis in real time How and why she never stops working THE END BITS: You can watch Otto By Otto on Stan. Let's take a moment to look ahead in 2025 to a few of the Australian films that will get people talking. Two particular films had their world premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2024, where their lead actor and performer, Albert Mwangi, was in attendance.Kate Blackmore's Make it Look Real is a hybrid-documentary experience that explores the role of intimacy coordination on film sets. Albert features in the documentary as himself, and in the film-within-a-film as a character in Kieran Darcy-Smith's romantic thriller Tightrope. Make it Look Real is a captivating and conversation-starting film about how intimacy has been presented on screen and how it can safely be depicted for all actors involved.Albert's other film that premiered the Adelaide Film Festival was Kelly Schilling's With or Without You, where he plays Dalu, a migrant worker swept into the lives of Melina Vidler's Chloe and her alcoholic mother, Sharon, played with effortless abandon by Marta Dusseldorp. With both of these films, Albert holds the audiences focus keenly, asking us to lean in to find out more about his performances. This level of captivation is partly the reason why he was nominated for the Casting Guild of Australia's Rising Star list of 2021.In the following interview, Albert talks about the balance of working on stage and screen, how he manages his creative journey as a storyteller and a vessel for others stories, and where he would like to see his career progress from here. Both Make it Look Real and With or Without You do not have announced dates at this stage, but keep an eye out for them.Follow Albert on Instagram here.Listen to Andrew's interview with Make it Look Real director Kate Blackmore here. Brace yourselves for a spectral analysis as we team up with the Stiletto Banshees' very own Tab and Micah to dissect the atmospheric 2008 Australian film "Lake Mungo." Our latest episode transcends a mere movie review, venturing into the murky waters of the film's haunting narrative, its understated theatrical debut, and subsequent rise to cult status through intimate home viewings. We're peeling back the layers of Joel Anderson's direction and the standout performances that give this story its chilling depth – all the while, exploring the film's global appeal that belies its initial limited release. In an unexpected turn of appreciation for a genre we're often wary of, we find ourselves thoroughly entranced by "Lake Mungo's" fusion of true crime and ghostly encounters. Micah brings fresh eyes to the discussion, sharing her initial reactions to the film's subtle yet profound storytelling techniques. The Australian Film Television and Radio school is celebrating its 50th anniversary!
As the world exited the Swinging 60s, Australia was looking to their own people for inspiration in the world of the cinema landscape. There were lots of American films to go see, European films were all the rage, but there was something missing from the world of Australian cinemas - the Australian. The Naked Bunyip was the first truly Australian film released to this country, as recent as 1970. It wasn't an easy ride for the director and his team, however, and to celebrate their achievement, we're going to have a long look into what made The Naked Bunyip so popular, so controversial, and so morally grey. Warning: This program contains Nude Sex Scenes; Lewd Humour; and a naked dancing bunyip. Viewer discretion is advised.
This week, we're traveling to the land down under to examine one of the greatest straight to video action films ever made, ‘Under the Gun'. Starring the one and only Richard Norton and featuring such martial arts legends as Kathy Long and Sam Greco, this super fun, well-written and hard-hitting action flick delivers one hell of a kick-ass ride. Norton not only shines in the action department per usual, but also gives what is his finest acting performance as the down on his luck, tough as nails, and undeniably suave Frank Torrance- an ex-hockey player turned nightclub owner, whose charm is matched only by his lethal martial arts abilities. With a target on his back and everyone out to get him, he must use every trick in the book to make it through the night and survive his high-risk gamble, where there is more than just money at stake! Listen in as we analyze what makes this movie so special, why it stands out in the vast field of 90's straight to video action movies and why you should check it out as soon as possible! Don't forget to subscribe, download and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!

When will I learn to give a truly brief synopsis of the movie? Not today, apparently! Tracy Michelle Bullock joins me to talk about representations of grief in the Babadook, as well as the ways motherhood can feel monstrous. She shares about gender, relationships, and her former career as a doula, and how that looks and feels as a non-birthing person. We had a great time and I appreciate her candor and vulnerability. Also, did you know that the Babadook is an LGBTQ+ icon? Do you know WHY? Listen and find out!
The story of the world's first feature film (Australian!), the rise of the comedy-drama (Australian!), and why we have so much cultural cringe (very Australian!). Oscar and BAFTA-nominated film “The Father” in cinemas this month was of course brought to you by the doyenne of Australian Cinema, Natalie Miller. With a keen eye for the latest greatest films, film distributor (Sharmill Films) and part-owner of the iconic Carlton Cinema Nova,Cinematic queen Natalie Miller transformed Melbourne and Australia into a film hub.Sourcing the best international and National films from across the globe she is revered for her dedication and determination to bring the best films to our local screens.Directors and producers across the globe from Fred Schepsi to Jane Campion, Sue Maslin (The Dressmaker) to Alan Finney respect her curated content which has seen Cinema Nova celebrated as Australia's premium art house cinema. As Oscars buzz swirls around her latest distribution selection “The Father” is carried by Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. This movie is told from Hopkins' perspective, as he ages his memory fading...“Based on the acclaimed, award-winning play, “The Father” starts out as a deceptively simple drama hinged on a deceptively familiar dynamic. Anne (Olivia Colman) is losing patience with her 80-year-old father, Anthony (Anthony Hopkins), whose grip on reality is fading but who refuses to allow a carer to look after him. She's moving to Paris and needs to ensure his safety while she is away so before she leaves she must find someone who will endure him. For Anthony, life has become a source of ever-disorienting confusion and in a masterful stroke, the writer-director Florian Zeller (who created the original stage production) tells the story from his eyes as characters and locations shift and we become as muddled as he.”Natalie joins me on the WhatIveLearntPodcast to discuss her latest choice, the Oscars, the collateral damage of losing her beloved cinema for Covid, her unfettered passion for film and storytelling, the new ACMI which she helped foster as an alumni board member, and the belief that the shared experience of going to the movies will always survive.

Let's close out or first ever CANADA VS AUSTRALIA month in style with the greatest Australian movie to ever be an Australian movie and put it straight to the pool room as we recap the 1997 classic that is The Castle! Why is Ben nervous again as to what Colin thinks of this film? Does Colin get all the Australian humour? Why does Colin get angry that they don't take the money? How good is Anne Tenney? How good is Tiriel Mora? What subtle moments in this movie has Ben never picked up on despite having seen this movie countless times? We've done one Canadian movie in our CANADA VS AUSTRALIA month and it was about ice hockey, so what perfect way to do our second Canadian movie of the month on the subject of curling as we look at the 2002 movie Men With Brooms. Which actor is the Canadian Pierce Brosnan in this movie? Why are there so many beavers and is that a normal thing for Canada? Does Colin finally understand the difference between sex and fighting? This is an episode which has crawled out of our very shallow archives. It was supposed to be released earlier this year to coincide with the cinematic release of David Stratton's documentary David Stratton: A Cinematic Life, but instead just didn't get released! So here it is in all its average audio glory. This interview was aptly recorded in the foyer of the great Windsor Cinema here in Perth, Western Australia, and alongside the background noises, David was under the weather on the day of the interview. None the less, I feel it's an interesting enough interview (even if my nerves of interviewing an idol come through a little bit too much). The rest of the episode is the Q&A which took place after the screening with local film reviewer Mark Naglazas and David Stratton. Again, the audio isn't the best, but it's still worth listening to if you can. David Stratton's Stories of Australian Cinema is playing on ABC iView right now, so make sure to check that out alongside the many Australian films on there before they disappear.
